Rating – 10 out of 5 stars! Some Albums outperform!

The release of Amar Singh Chamkila is still a few days away, but the jukebox of the film is out, and this is one film where Bollywood outperformed after a very long time. Recently, I was putting all my hopes for a good Bollywood music album from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi, totally forgetting about the Chamkila biopic. But finally, Ar Rahman, Imtiaz Ali, and Irshad Kamil’s magical trio arrived unannounced, taking my breath away. And this album is the only soul music you need right now.

If you talk about a brilliantly balanced album from a commercial film, you would struggle when you encountered it last. Last year, Animal had a good album, undoubtedly, but it never stayed with you. Similarly, Rocky Aur Rani Ki...

'The Archies' debut track 'Sunoh' is a feel-good '60s-style rock 'n' roll anthem
Image
Zoya Akhtar’s upcoming teen comedy coming-of-age film ‘The Archies’ has released its debut track ‘Sunoh’, which is a feel-good ’60s-style rock ‘n’ roll anthem. ‘Sunoh’ is a vibrant and energetic track whose rhythm and melody harnesses old-school rock ‘n’ roll vibes, while simultaneously bringing in aspects of modern production and catchy teenage grooves.

A pure garage rock ’n’ roll style production, the song is extremely feel-good, reminiscent of the old bubblegum pop-rock music, though it is incredibly well produced and well mixed, feeling both old-school, and yet new.

‘The Archies’ had initially given a glimpse of ‘Sunoh’ in its very first trailer, though this time we have the full song and it is a sure foot-tapper. The track is created by the music duo of Ankur Tewari and The Islanders.

The rise of indie music post Covid lockdown
Image
By Samarth Goyal

New Delhi, March 7 (Ians) Independent musicians in India, up until the pandemic, depended heavily on word of mouth to promote their music, and live shows played a big role. However, ever since lockdown was imposed due to Covid-19, live shows dried up, pushing musicians -- especially those who werent signed up with big music labels -- to adapt, and so they did.

Plenty of indie musicians, restricted at home, started creating music within the confines of their four walls, and the result was fantastic. 2020 was probably the biggest year in terms of independent music releases.

"India's rapidly evolving music audience is now open to discovering music outside of the Bollywood landscape. We are witnessing a sea change moment for music consumption in India. We have a new mobile-first generation of smartphone users, consuming more original music than ever before," says Indian-American rapper Raja Kumari.

If the first...

Humour : Filmfare awards 2020 is a spiritual awakening
?Filmfare awards 2020 is a spiritual awakening for this country?, says Mani Kapoor ?note?d filmmaker and spokesperson of Filmfare awards in an exclusive chat with this author. Excerpts from the conversation.

It?s the morning after the coveted night at Guwahati, as the twitterati are losing their cool and keeping my phone hysterically buzzing with post ranting for what is believed to be the most namakool (ridiculous) award?s night. Zoya Akhtar directed Gully Boy starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt has swept the awards night by bagging best picture, actor, director, and actress etc, leaving the much deserving Uri: The Surgical Strike, Sonchiriya, Hamid, The Tashkent Files, Batla House, and Section 375 way behind in the race. The nonstop vibration on my phone gets interrupted by a ring tone. It?s noted producer Mani Kapoor on the line and is highly elated.

Indian Hip-Hop Gets Big Screen Time in Berlin Festival Pic ‘Gully Boy’
Zoya Akhtar
Eminent Indian filmmaker Zoya Akhtar’s new film, “Gully Boy,” had its world premiere at Berlin as part of the Berlinale Special screenings strand.

Set in Mumbai’s Dharavi area, one of Asia’s largest slums, the film is loosely based on the lives of street rappers Divine and Naezy, whose music Akhtar first heard in 2014. Akhtar is known for her successful dramas set among the world of the hyper-wealthy in films such as “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” (2011) and “Dil Dhadakne Do” (2015) or in elite Bollywood circles such as her debut feature, “Luck by Chance” (2009). “Gully Boy” marks a significant departure in milieu for the filmmaker.

“It’s not so much the theme as the world and the music that is attractive to me,” Akhtar says. “Thematically, the same kind of story that I end up making, which is coming of age, finding your voice, it is similar. It is...

Gully Boy Music Review
In October 2016, Al Jazeera did a stunning piece on the hottest new scene in Mumbai town: underground rap. It looked very closely at “Indianizing Hip-hop” specifically through the eyes of one rapper Navid Shaikh or Naezy. Only 2 years on and this same theme is now a major Bollywood film Gully Boy. Directed by Zoya Akhtar and led by Ranveer Singh, this story tells not only of Naezy’s rise to the heights of this young movement but also compatriot Divine in a musical album subtitled “Apna Time Aayega”. Its music would not be complete or correct without inputs from Divine and Naezy themselves but also from a multitude of the stars of this form with Spitfire, Rishi Rich and Dub Sharma just to name a few also getting in on the act. To round the album with the necessary non-rap songs Karsh Kale, Ankur Tewari and Jasleen Royal also make major contributions.

A look ahead of the exciting music coming in 2019
The year 2018 showed us that Bollywood film industry’s music directors are up with the times and trends as set by their western counterparts, with many songs combining traditional instrumentations and beats into more western beats. Some even were able to use western instruments to create a uniquely Indian flavour, which suited their audiences very well. Still the great winner in terms of genre was the absolute love song, which seemed to grow to greater heights throughout 2018 from a musical standpoint. While 2019’s films tend to be shifting away from the pure romance genre towards a more periodic-action-fantasy genre fusion, this gives Bollywood’s music directors even more scope for tinkering with the romance songs. Here we look forward to what’s coming up.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is both the title of the interesting album and a smash hit romantic song of the 90s composed originally by the legend R.
