Everyone Is Going to Die Review: When Privilege Meets Retribution
Image
Craig Tuohy’s feature debut, Everyone Is Going to Die, unfolds in a spare 82-minute runtime that refuses any escape routes. Released on VOD and in select theaters on February 21, 2025, this indie horror-thriller plants itself firmly within a single ultramodern country house. Tuohy wears both writer’s and director’s hats, guiding each frame toward a cohesion that recalls the tight storytelling of early French New Wave experiments.

Daniel (Brad Moore) greets his estranged daughter Imogen (Gledisa Arthur) for her 16th birthday, eager to mend their fractured bond. His sleek mansion—complete with floor-to-ceiling windows and sparse décor—becomes a crucible when two masked women, Comedy (Jaime Winstone) and Tragedy (Chiara D’Anna), crash what should have been a family reunion. Forced into a series of sadistic “games,” father and daughter discover that every ritual holds a deeper sting.

Composer Si Begg’s low-frequency drone settles in like a pulse, while...

Everyone Is Going to Die is a new thriller about Daniel, a wealthy businessman who is trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter Imogen while she is on suspension from school for punching a supposed friend who slept with her boyfriend. Since it’s also her birthday, the timing seems perfect.

However, before they can do much reconnecting they see someone wandering around in the yard wearing a mask that looks like a poor copy of the theatrical tragedy mask. While Daniel is telling them to get off his property another intruder, this one wearing a comedy mask and carrying a shotgun.

It’s not a random robbery attempt either, the pair have an unspecified grievance with Daniel, so the rest of the movie involves them humiliating him in front of his daughter...

An Irish Angel Review: A Moving Tale of Resilience
Image
An Irish Angel, directed by Danny Patrick, is set in Northern Ireland and centers around Aine, a teenager facing the challenges of an unexpected pregnancy. Still in school herself, Aine must grapple with this major life change while surrounded by the daily pressures of her family and community.

We meet Aine at the start of the film, nervous to reveal her situation to anyone beyond her grandmother. As her belly grows, so do the difficult decisions she needs to make. Will she keep the baby, or will she choose abortion in light of her young age? And how will those around her react to her news, particularly her strict Catholic upbringing and mother?

Aine leans on friends like Leo as well as mentors like her drama teacher, Ellie, for guidance and support. But each comes with their own personal hardships too. All the while, Aine’s terminally ill grandmother needs looking after as well.

An Irish Angel review – incident-packed teenage pregnancy comedy lurches into tragedy
Margaret
This Northern Ireland-set feature veers unconvincingly from a schoolgirl’s abortion dilemma to a welter of subplots before a clumsy tonal shift

Redolent of young-adult fiction by way of school hijinks movies, with a whiff of British realism, this is much less satisfying than all that would suggest. An Irish Angel revolves around pregnant teenager Aine (Niamh James) living in Portrush in Northern Ireland who, as the film starts, has yet to tell her mum Margaret (Amanda Doherty) she’s up the duff, although her grandmother Agnes (Kathy Deehan) already suspects what’s going on.

At least her best friend, sweet-natured goof and aspiring actor Leo (Todd Bell), offers to help her pay for an abortion but Aine dithers over whether she wants to terminate or not. Dreams about the school caretaker (Shane Robinson) taking the form of Jesus are not especially helpful when it comes to working out what to do.

10 Underrated Zombie TV Shows To Watch If You Love The Walking Dead
Image
The Walking Dead enjoyed a prolonged run of eleven seasons, generating interest among viewers to check out similar zombie shows across multiple genres and countries. After witnessing the survivalist adventures of Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, and many other drifters affected by the zombie apocalypse, viewers can explore the numerous ongoing spin-offs and prequels that the AMC show has spawned. Ever since The Walking Dead pilot aired first in 2010, the zombie genre has gone on to be reinterpreted in wildly creative ways. For instance, Santa Clarita Diet played out as a dark romantic comedy with zombie tropes while Kingdom reimagined the undead in medieval Korean history.

But among the new-age zombie shows, fans of The Walking Dead would opt for more conventional picks that delve into themes of human survival and brutal bloodshed. Still, there’s a scope for even these hyperviolent shows to play around a zombie invasion in diverse settings.

Muslim Vampire Series Count Abdulla Reinvents the Christianity-Based Mythology
Image
The new British series Count Abdulla takes a humorous look at vampire tropes through a different cultural lens.

As SFX Magazine writes, the upcoming sitcom imagines what the world of vampires would look like if the creatures of the night were Muslim. According to the series' leading actor Arian Nik, "Churches and holy water don't mean anything to Abdulla as they do to white vampires or the folklore that we're all familiar with." That doesn't mean, however, that Muslim vampires have an unfair advantage. They have practical considerations Christian vampires never had to think about. For instance, "Blood is not halal," as series director Asim Abbasi pointed out.

Danny Dyer has recalled the time he told EastEnders bosses he “was going to die” if he didn’t quit the show amid his battle with drug addiction.

The actor joined the cast of the BBC soap in 2013 as Mick Carter, a role he will depart later this year.

Appearing on the first episode of Jaime Winstone’s Greatest Night Ever podcast, Dyer spoke about his struggles with drugs while filming the soap that reached a head around his wedding to wife Jo in 2016.

“Fame never suited me,” Dyer said. “I was always f***ing gonna be going down the wrong path. So I lost the plot for many years and I was a f***ing lunatic. I had no validation of who I was. I became a cartoon character… I got wrapped up in that and I sort of lost who I was.

“A Monumental Failing”: Stephen Merchant and BBC’s ‘Four Lives’ Creators Slam British Authorities Over Murder Case Depicted In Factual Drama
Image
The creators and stars of upcoming Stephen Merchant-starring BBC1 factual drama Four Lives about serial killer Stephen Port’s crimes have slammed London’s Metropolitan Police and the UK justice system for “monumental failings” over the case. Merchant also teased his approach to playing the lead role of Port, describing him as “like the shark from Jaws in that the shark is unknowable.”

An inquest into the Met’s investigation into Port’s four murders concluded earlier this month that three of them “probably” could have been avoided if the police hadn’t missed opportunities, while a group of UK MPs has called for a public inquiry into claims of institutional homophobia that beset the case.

Veteran Four Lives exec Jeff Pope said the four dead young men had been “brutally opened up to the most horrific public exposure” during the case, which led to a full life sentence...

A Brixton Tale review – London girl-meets-boy drama questions the visual narrative
An interesting take on identity, as one half of a young couple videos the other, gets taken over by social commentary

This London drama is directed with absolute confidence by first-timers Darragh Carey and Bertrand Desrochers, hitting the ground running with a girl-meets-boy story set in Brixton. It begins with a chaotic rush of teenage energy and hormones when white middle-class teenager Leah (Lily Newmark) gets together with Benji (Ola Orebiyi), who is black and from a low-income family. Before they meet, budding video artist Leah secretly follows Benji around Brixton, voyeuristically filming him handing out flyers for his mum’s nail bar and mucking about with his mates. Her footage gives us a portrait of Benji as an intriguing mix of charisma and shyness – with an innate kindness that makes the tragedy coming his way painful to watch.

Together as a couple, Leah and Benji document their world: getting...

UK-based sales outfit Parkland Pictures has acquired worldwide sales rights (excluding UK) to A Brixton Tale, which had its world premiere at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival.

It is the first feature film from commercials director Darragh Carey and music video director Bertrand Desrochers.

The cast features Lily Newmark (Misbehaviour), Ola Orebiyi (Limbo) and Craige Middleburg (The Batman) alongside former Screen Stars of Tomorrow Jaime Winstone and Barney Harris.

Dennis Gyamfi and Beau Rambaut are producers with Rupert Baynham, who also wrote the screenplay with Chi Mai. The project was written,...

Lily Newmark at an event for Pin Cushion (2017)
A Brixton Tale - Amber Wilkinson - 16574
Lily Newmark at an event for Pin Cushion (2017)
There's a nervy energy to this feature debut from Darragh Carrey and Betrand Desrochers, who show a flair for visual storytelling even if the narrative ultimately treads a predictable path. Visuals are at the heart of this tale, which is partly seen through the lens of white young blogger Ophelia (Lily Newmark), who it turns out is a "proper rich girl".

She masks this to a degree behind a permanent pout, by shortening her name to Leah and hanging about the street with her camera, where she is particularly drawn to black teenager Benji (Ola Orebiyi) and his mates. She could almost be a modern-day incarnation of Joanna Hogg's Julie (The Souvenir), encouraged by her gallery mentor Tilda (Jaime Winstone) to be on the lookout for poverty porn - although she would probably call it "edge". Friendship and romance begin to crackle between Leah and Benji and initially there's some.

First Trailer for 'Hurt by Paradise' Film - Known as British 'Francis Ha'
Greta Bellamacina at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 01, 2023 in Venice, Italy.
"I need you to focus on your life... Think about the things that you want to know..." Trinity Creative has just revealed an official trailer for an acclaimed British indie film titled Hurt by Paradise, which premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2019, also stopping by the Raindance Film Festival. Hurt by Paradise is a film about a poet and a girl with big hair. Together they find friendship as the possibility of their dreams dwindles. It's described as "the British Francis Ha... a heartfelt love letter to female friendship and London, from first time writer/director Greta Bellamacina," who also stars in the film as Celeste Blackwood. The cast includes Nicholas Rowe, Anna Brewster, Sai Bennett, Jaime Winstone, and Tanya Burr. This looks a bit kooky but still charming and extra clever and, of course, brutally honest about the way things are. Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for Greta Bellamacina's Hurt by Paradise,...

‘Knuckledust’ VOD Review

Stars: Moe Dunford, Kate Dickie, Gethin Anthony, Alex Ferns, Jaime Winstone, Phil Davis, Sebastian Foucan | Written and Directed by James Kermack

Right spoilers on my verdict out of the way first…. I keep saying a lot lately that we are smack dab in the middle of an independent movie surge in the UK, with some truly fantastic directors, actors, producers and DOPs all standing up and being counted. Whatever your genre you can find something for you – from quality horror with the Shudder lockdown movie Host, straight up sci-fi with Tom Paton’s G-Loc, a sports drama with Sam Gitten’s vehicle Break or martial arts action with Kung Fu Matty’s Tribal: Get Out Alive… One other independent UK movie that I managed to check out recently that fits the same category is Knuckledust. Honestly, I was intrigued by the cast, the synopsis and that poster above which has...

A New Kind of Fight Club - First Trailer for 'Knuckledust' Action Film
Phil Davis, Kate Dickie, Alex Ferns, Sebastien Foucan, Jaime Winstone, Gethin Anthony, Olivier Richters, James Kermack, Moe Dunford, and Camille Rowe in London Fight Club (2020)
"This is my world... And I control everything in it." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for Knuckledust, an intense action-thriller movie that looks like a mash-up between Fight Club and The Raid (the original one from 2011). A specialized police task force discovers an elite fight club (called "Club Knuckledust") where they find seven underground levels, each filled with the dead bodies of fighters from around the world. Only one man is found left alive. The task force has to work out if he's a mass murderer or the lone survivor? Of course, we already know he fought his way down there and is probably the winner. But still! This looks brutally intense. Starring Moe Dunford, Kate Dickie, Camille Rowe, Phil Davis, Alex Ferns, Olivier Richters, Jaime Winstone, Gethin Anthony, and Sebastien Foucan. This looks like it could be seriously badass, or one big, bloody mess. Hopefully it's...

“Four Weddings and a Funeral” filmmaker Curtis developed the concept for the film and iconic British photographer Rankin shot and produced it. Jordan Rossi directed.
