Netflix has been on an action movie hot streak lately, with the streamer all set to continue the trend by teaming up with the Academy Award-winning director behind The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow. Not only that, action outing, which has been described as “a harrowing ticking-clock thriller,” will also see The Suicide Squad star Idris Elba join forces with one of Netflix’s best new action heroes.

Bigelow’s Netflix thriller is titled A House of Dynamite, and a first look and new synopsis have now been revealed in anticipation of the movie’s debut, which will take place at this year’s Venice Film Festival, where it will compete. Kathryn Bigelow already has two Academy Awards to her name, and she will be back for a buzzy awards run later this year. After making her directorial debut with the biker movie The Loveless (1981), Bigelow made a name for herself directing thrillers, such as Near Dark (1987), Blue Steel (1990), Point Break (1991), Strange Days (1995), and K-19: The Widowmaker (2002).

She gained critical acclaim for The Hurt Locker (2008), about a bomb squad in Iraq, and Bigelow became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director, with the war movie also winning Best Picture. She followed that up with the political thriller Zero Dark Thirty (2012), about the manhunt for Osama bin Laden, and earned another Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

However, her last movie was the crime drama Detroit (2017), but now, the first look at Bigelow's first film in eight years has been revealed.

A House Of Dynamite's First Image Revealed...

The San Quentin Film Festival — which, last year, became the first-ever film festival held inside of a prison — has set the industry jury for its second annual event, including Vanessa Williams, Esai Morales, Jesse Williams, Celine Song and more.

These jurors will judge narrative and documentary short films from currently and formerly incarcerated filmmakers as well the pitch competitions for best screenplay and best documentary from currently incarcerated writers.

This year’s jury also features two formerly incarcerated people: actor and writer Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin, who starred in 2024’s “Sing Sing,” as well as actor, author and poet Richard Cabral, best known for “Mayans M.C.” and “American Crime.”

Other notable jurors include Kyra Sedgwick and Claudia Weill. Last year’s industry jury included Jeffrey Wright, Billy Crudup, Mary-Louise Parker and more.

Thompson, Brendan Sexton III, Liana Wright-Mark, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Jorge Garcia and Lauren Glazier will star in “American Muscle.” It’s a gritty, character-driven thriller from writer-director Joel Veach that was shot entirely in Santa Clarita, Calif. Production recently wrapped on the indie feature.

The film follows a debt-ridden mechanic (Thompson) desperate to escape his violent past. When his estranged sister returns and two ruthless debt collectors come looking for payment, long-buried family secrets resurface, setting the stage for an explosive reckoning.

After what seemed a long period of development, it was rather dismaying to learn in the spring of last year that Netflix wouldn’t be moving forward with Aurora, an apocalyptic thriller written by Jurassic Park scribe, David Koepp.

As you may know, there was a change in leadership at the streaming platform’s film division around that time, and Bigelow’s project – her first since 2017’s Detroit – was one casualty of many. Mind you, some reports have suggested that Bigelow may have actually exited the project, leading to its cancellation.

Two months after the Season 2 finale, the future of The Old Man on FX has been revealed. Unfortunately, it's not good news for fans of the series.

Per Deadline, FX has officially canceled The Old Man after two seasons, so there will not be a third season of the Jeff Bridges-led series. The show meeting its fate comes after wading through some troubled waters with its production for its two seasons. Season 1 began development in 2019 and was forced to shut down with just three episodes left to film because of the pandemic in 2020. Filming was further postponed as Bridges underwent cancer treatment; he announced in 2021 that his cancer was in remission, and production on The Old Man resumed in 2022.

FX has canceled its drama series The Old Man after two seasons.

The series, starring Jeff Bridges as a retired CIA operative pressed back into action, performed well in its first season in 2022 and earned two Emmy nominations, for Bridges’ lead performance and cinematography.

Production on season two stopped during last year’s dual labor strikes, leading to a gap of more than two years between seasons – not unusual for a streaming series but hard to overcome for a show that originates on a linear channel, as The Old Man did on FX. The cancellation comes about eight weeks after season two aired its finale in late October.

FX declined comment.

The second — and now final — season is up for three Critics Choice Awards in January: best drama series, best actor in a drama for Bridges and best supporting actor in a drama for John Lithgow.

Though work and the highly-anticipated debut of the second season were delayed because of the writers and actors strikes that began in summer 2023. Well, now the time has come for the series to return!

The Old Man season 2 premieres tonight, Sept. 12, 2024 starting at 10 p.m. Et on FX with back-to-back episodes. So once the first episode is over, be sure to stick around! That's because episode 2 will air right after as well. After premiere day, we'll move to one release a week until the finale of the 8-episode season. Episodes stream on Hulu the next day as well. In the highly competitive world of streaming services, Tubi has made a name for itself. It’s a weird name, sure, but it’s a name. Tubi is free with commercials, which companies like Netflix probably think is madness, but more importantly it’s packed with movies and TV shows that pretty much all the other streamers don’t give a crap about.

You can find big releases licensed from major studios, but you can get those anywhere. Try finding the 1988 Canadian TV series “T and T” — about Mister T working as a legal aid — on Netflix or Disney+. They would never. Elliott Lester returns to the director's chair with a fresh take on the Western genre in The Thicket. After making his feature directorial debut with 2006's Love Is The Drug, Lester would find his breakout work in the Jason Statham-led Blitz in 2011, quickly following it up with the acclaimed David Oyelowo-starring drama Nightingale in 2014. Lester returned to the director's chair for two back-to-back 2017 releases with the psychological thriller Sleepwalker and true-story-based Arnold Schwarzenegger drama Aftermath, though would go on hiatus until his new film.

After a decade of pushing to get the adaptation off the ground, Peter Dinklage's The Thicket is finally being realized. Based on Joe R. Lansdale's 2013 novel of the same name, the Game of Thrones alum first came onboard the adaptation in 2014 as both a star and producer, alongside Gianni Nunnari, Shannon Gaulding and Andre Lemmers. The movie wouldn't gain proper steam until 2020, when pre-production began with director Elliott Lester and stars Noomi Rapace, Charlie Plummer and Sophia Lillis, though the trio would be replaced due to scheduling conflicts after the movie was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wait, you’re telling me there’s a Tubi original film that doesn’t—how do I put this—suck? Just from the look of the poster, The Thicket seems like a bad career move for Emmy-winner Peter Dinklage, an understandable one for Juliette Lewis, and an act of desperation from a director specializing in pop-star music videos.

I couldn’t have been more wrong. Elliott Lester’s The Thicket is a masterstroke in pace and tone. Like Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven decades prior strips away the facade of the Old West. No, Lester’s great Western trailblazer strips away the lore, presenting a ruthless and cutthroat world unlike any we’ve seen in the genre in years.

Lester’s film captures the true dangers of the frontier, pitiless to the weak. Yet no matter how tough and seasoned these characters are, everyone calls out for their mamas by the end.

Plot: Former CIA agent Dan Chase and former FBI Assistant Director Harold Harper set off on their most important mission to date — to recover Emily Chase after she is kidnapped by Faraz Hamzad, a powerful Afghan tribal leader. Review: The first season of The Old Man was a unique take on the espionage drama, pitting the great Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow opposite one another despite not sharing the screen until the final episode. Truncated by Bridges’ cancer diagnosis and recovery along with a bout of Covid, the first season of The Old Man concluded with three episodes less than originally intended. Still, the series presented two of our best acting talents, complemented by solid performances from Alia Shawkat and Amy Brenneman, as the series set up an even more exciting sophomore run.
