The three Duggar women spend a lot of time together. They have formed a special bond that appears to be exclusive.

When Abbie married John David Duggar, Joy and Austin Forsyth were their chaperones during most of their dates. They have plenty in common, and their friendship was highlighted on Counting On.

Katey married Jedidiah Duggar and became close with Joy and Abbie. Their relationship wasn’t featured on TV, and everything appeared to move quickly between them.

Abbie recently celebrated her birthday, and while she spent time with John David, Joy, and Austin, the women got together for a girls’ night out.

When John David Washington, the star of features like Tenet, Monsters and Men, and BlacKkKlansman logs onto our Zoom call from Los Angeles, I’m first struck by his t-shirt. He’s wearing one of those commemorative Do The Right Thing tees from Spike Lee’s 40 Acres and a Mule brand/production house.

Netflix has released a powerful new screen adaptation of August Wilson’s classic play “The Piano Lesson,” which marks Malcolm Washington’s first feature film as director. The film, which debuted at the Telluride Film Festival, examines deep family history and generational suffering through the lens of a single, meaningful musical instrument.

John David, 40, stars in the movie, which Malcolm, 33, directed, and Katia, 36, produced.

Cast members in attendance included Danielle Deadwyler, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, Corey Hawkins, and Gail Bean.

Katia had the support of wife Colleen at the premiere while Tyler, the Creator was also in attendance.

Play-to-film adaptations can often flourish thanks to the little tricks and turns that only the silver screen can provide: whether it’s Jack Nicholson’s claustrophobic close-up as he exclaims guilt in A Few Good Men, or the frantic editing of Amadeus. For director Malcolm Washington, generational Black resilience and complex familial bonds are the underlying themes in front of and behind the camera for Netflix’s The Piano Lesson. Making his feature film debut, Washington enlisted the talents of his family as his brother, John David Washington, plays the lead role alongside appearances from his mother, Pauletta, and twin sister, Olivia. Older sister, Katia and father Denzel Washington are producers. Based on August Wilson’s 1987 play, the story centers around a bitter feud between two siblings (played by John David and Danielle Deadwyler) who disagree about what to do with the family’s antebellum-era heirloom piano.

Deadline: How did this adaptation find its way to you? Did Virgil Williams approach you first?

Malcolm Washington: He was involved in it many years before this started, but I don’t think he worked on it yet. So, I approached him with a take that I thought was interesting.

Denzel Washington's talk of retirement may have just permanently ruled out The Equalizer 4. It's shocking to think that before the second entry of The Equalizer movie franchise, Washington had never appeared in a sequel. Of course, it helps that the concept loaned itself to other standalone stories, where Denzel's vigilante McCall rights the wrongs that the law can't (or won't). The Equalizer 3's ending saw McCall retire to a quiet little Italian town, seemingly leaving his equalizing days behind for good.

Regardless of the film wrapping up McCall's story and giving the character a shot to live in peace, there was still hope for a potential Equalizer 4. The character is still alive, and so long as a good concept is found, there's no reason to think the series couldn't run for another sequel or two. He has been part of the team for years, and they were deployed to the area over a week ago to help aid the citizens in need.

However, his brother, Jason Duggar, was due to marry Maddie Grace Jones on October 3, and there was speculation that he could not attend the event.

Jason and Maddie Grace were married in Newport, Tennessee, which isn’t far from many affected areas.

It seems that John David could attend the wedding and watch as his little brother married his bride.

With “The Piano Lesson,” John David Washington had the rare acting opportunity to interpret August Wilson’s classic text for the stage in Broadway’s 2022 revival and now again in Netflix’s new feature adaptation, due Nov. 22.

Speaking with TheWrap as part of our TIFF 2024 interview and photo studio, Washington shared that playing Boy Willie on both stage and screen was “a liberating experience.” It helped, too, that he was led behind the camera by his brother Malcolm Washington, who makes his feature film directorial debut with “The Piano Lesson.”

“[It was] a liberating experience, given my reverence and my respect for the our filmmaker, for our director, our leader — what he envisioned, how he wanted to open up this story cinematically,” John David told TheWrap.

Jd Souther, the singer and songwriter who co-wrote songs with the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt, has died. He was 78.

Souther died peacefully at his home in New Mexico, according to his rep. No cause of death was given. He was about to embark on a tour with Karla Bonoff.

“The Piano Lesson” director Malcolm Washington wasn’t “trying to dishonor August [Wilson] in any way, but we were trying to tell the story for modern audiences in a way that I think communicates and articulates clearly visually,” as opposed to how it’s experienced on stage. He discussed the film, about a Black family in 1930s Pittsburgh and the title family heirloom that divides them, at a special screening and Q&a in New York City on September 12. Malcolm continued, “This work is so layered, right? There’s so many elements at play here. There’s a lot of tones at play. There’s a lot of subtext in-between the lines, and we wanted to honor that and bring it out visually.

The Piano Lesson is yet another adaptation of one of August Wilson's plays that Denzel Washington, as producer, has successfully shepherded from the stage to the screen, following 2016's Fences and 2020's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. This time around, it's a whole-family affair, with sons John David Washington and Malcolm Washington, as actor and director/co-writer respectively, and daughter Katia Washington, as executive producer, on-board. The film made its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and will release on Netflix on November 22 and it's not a film to be missed.

It's 1936 in The PIano Lesson, and John David is Boy Willie Charles, a boisterous and charismatic man who wants to sell his family's heirloom piano in order to be able to buy the land upon which his ancestors were once enslaved. However, his sister Berniece (Danielle Deadwyler) vehemently protests the idea, not that she uses the piano or even plays it.

The Piano Lesson is the third film, after Fences and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, that Denzel Washington has produced from playwright August Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle. It’s also the finest. And this time, it’s a family affair.

The film stars Washington’s oldest son, John David, and is directed by his youngest, Malcolm. His daughters, Katia and Olivia, are also involved, as producer and actor in a small role respectively. And as the credits roll, there’s a dedication to the children’s mother, Pauletta. Call it projection, but it’s hard not to get sentimental about the kids getting together to grapple with this story. The Piano Lesson is about siblings fighting over the legacy their parents and ancestors passed down to them.

Malcolm, 33, premiered his new Netflix movie The Piano Lesson at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival on Tuesday (September 10) held at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto, Canada.

Supporting Malcolm at the premiere were his parents Denzel and Pauletta Washington, sister Katia, and brother John David, who appears in the movie.

Ray Fisher ignites the screen as Lymon, the best friend of lead character Boy Willie Charles, played by John David Washington, in Netflix’s period drama “The Piano Lesson.” His portrayal has even sparked some early Oscar buzz.

Fisher’s last few years have been challenging following his public dispute with “Justice League” director Joss Whedon and former DC Films president Walter Hamada. But this project offers Fisher a chance to move forward.

Exclusive: Pauletta Pearson Washington says that the film adaptation of August Wilson’s acclaimed play The Piano Lesson has been a family affair. “All my babies are involved in this,” the actor, musician and philanthropist declares.

Jackson being the one to originate the role of Boy Willie in the first production of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson” at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 1987, his wife Latanya Richardson Jackson completely banned him from talking to John David Washington about taking on the role when they began working together on the 2022 Broadway revival that she directed. “So the whole time we did the play, I had no Boy Willie conversations with him. I didn’t tell him what to do,” said the actor to IndieWire during a recent phone conversation. “He had to find certain things on his own because Boy Willie is a complicated character and you have to have a certain amount of comfortability in your understanding of him to be able to get those things out of your mouth that he’s saying.”
