Joy-Anna Forsyth in 17 Kids and Counting (2008)
Joy-Anna Duggar has grown incredibly close with her sisters-in-law Abbie Grace Burnett and Katelyn Nakatsu.

The three Duggar women spend a lot of time together. They have formed a special bond that appears to be exclusive.

When Abbie married John David Duggar, Joy and Austin Forsyth were their chaperones during most of their dates. They have plenty in common, and their friendship was highlighted on Counting On.

Katey married Jedidiah Duggar and became close with Joy and Abbie. Their relationship wasn’t featured on TV, and everything appeared to move quickly between them.

Abbie recently celebrated her birthday, and while she spent time with John David, Joy, and Austin, the women got together for a girls’ night out.

The Washington Brothers ‘Do Some Shopping’ in the Criterion Closet
Image
Brothers and collaborators John David and Malcolm Washington didn’t come to play in the Criterion Closet. As writer/director and star of “The Piano Lesson” Malcolm put it at the start of their visit, “We’re here to do some shopping.” And shop they did, filling their tote bags with some of cinema’s greatest delights, starting with the hefty 10-film series from Polish auteur Krzysztof Kieślowski, “Dekalog,” Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Mirror,” and the Hughes Brothers’ “Menace II Society.”

“Actually, I learned a lot from Allen Hughes,” John David said of the “Menace II Society” co-director. “The influence and the importance of sound and music and how it can really change the mood or the scene in a way that I never stopped to think about it before.”

He also praised the work of John Cassavetes, particularly “Faces” and “Opening Night,” calling the naturalism on display “very inspiring.” Calling...

Abbie Grace Burnett and Gracie Duggar enjoy Arkansas snow
Image
John David Duggar and Abbie Grace Burnett took some time to enjoy the snow with their children.

Several Duggar siblings spent time at the Big House to enjoy the Arkansas snow to the fullest.

The area had a decent snowfall, and with the lay of the Duggar land, they could sled and enjoy a decent-sized snowman.

Jason Duggar and Maddie Grace Jones played in the snow together, too.

It appears that the Big House was where several of the siblings and grandchildren gathered to enjoy time in the snow.

Gracie and Charlie Duggar were there for the fun.

With the hills at the Big House, the siblings and grandchildren enjoy sledding.

It doesn’t always snow enough in Arkansas to yield enough for playtime, but the Duggars were lucky enough to get the perfect amount.

John David Washington Dedicates Himself to The Piano Lesson
Image
For actor John David Washington, making the pilgrimage to Pittsburgh’s Hill District was one of the more poignant stops on his journey as The Piano Lesson character Boy Willie Charles. After making his Broadway debut with the role in the 2022 Tony Award-nominated production and reprising it for the new film adaptation from director Malcolm Washington, John David Washington finally found himself on the home turf of playwright August Wilson for a special screening. This visit was one of many stops of a tour that also spans cities across Europe, yet the actor got the chance to visit the home where Wilson grew up and the library a few blocks up where a few “Og’s” play chess religiously. “Everybody from the Hill District to me, are Wilsonians,” John David says. “This is just who they are, as far as the experience, the neighborhood. They know...

How ‘The Piano Lesson’ Helped John David Washington Rediscover His Passion for Acting
Image
John David Washington found himself in a rare situation while promoting his latest film, Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson.” It was his first real press tour in a while, since the rollout for his previous few films (including Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” and Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator”) were impacted by the Covid pandemic, then the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

“It was a relief to be able to do it like you’re supposed to, as far as getting with the people, right after they see it in the theater, and talking,” Washington says. And after one screening in Paris, his parents — actors Denzel and Pauletta Washington — joined him onstage for the Q&a. “I never thought that I’d be on the same stage with my old man talking about a film that we’re a part of — not in my wildest dreams.”

But, if it was going to happen,...

John David Washington On ‘The Piano Lesson’, A Unique Achievement With Christopher Nolan & The Play He Would Most Like To Tackle Next
Image
When John David Washington, the star of features like Tenet, Monsters and Men, and BlacKkKlansman logs onto our Zoom call from Los Angeles, I’m first struck by his t-shirt. He’s wearing one of those commemorative Do The Right Thing tees from Spike Lee’s 40 Acres and a Mule brand/production house.

That same week I’d started a personal reappraisal of Lee’s work thanks to some new criterion releases in the UK and had the Blu-ray disk for Jungle Fever next to me. When Washington catches a glance he begins to wax lyrical about multiple scenes and small details in the film.

“There’s that one scene where she leaves the dad’s house and the camera tracks her and there’s that one song. It’s Stevie [Wonder] he did the whole score. What was that song again?” Washington says. It’s clear he knows his stuff.

How ‘The Piano Lesson’ Uses Music to Excavate America’s Dark History of Slavery
Image
For Malcolm Washington, an appreciation for August Wilson plays runs in the family. Several years ago, his father Denzel committed to producing film adaptations of Wilson’s Century Cycle plays — a collection of 10 works, each covering one decade of the Black experience in 20th-century America. Denzel started with the Oscar-nominated Fences, which he also directed and starred in, and followed that with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which won Chadwick Boseman a posthumous Best Actor Oscar nomination. In 2022, Malcolm’s brother, the actor John David Washington, starred in a Broadway revival of The Piano Lesson.

Image
During his initial years in showbiz, Denzel Washington cemented himself as the go-to guy for biopics, thanks to stellar performances in releases, such as Cry Freedom, Malcolm X, and The Hurricane. But despite mostly leaning towards more heroic roles during the ’90s, the actor finally left his comfort zone to tackle a more villainous gig in the early 2000s.

Not only did it open a whole new door for the actor in Hollywood, but his role in Training Day also earned Washington his second Oscar win, and he has his son to thank for it.

La Leçon de piano (2024)
Netflix’s ‘The Piano Lesson’ Sparks Critical Debate Despite Star-Studded Cast
La Leçon de piano (2024)
Netflix has released a powerful new screen adaptation of August Wilson’s classic play “The Piano Lesson,” which marks Malcolm Washington’s first feature film as director. The film, which debuted at the Telluride Film Festival, examines deep family history and generational suffering through the lens of a single, meaningful musical instrument.

Set in 1936 Pittsburgh, the film depicts the Charles family’s fierce struggle over an ancestral piano carved with pictures of their enslaved forefathers. The center of the story is Boy Willie (John David Washington), who travels from Mississippi to persuade his sister Berniece (Danielle Deadwyler) to sell the family’s prized piano—a symbolic object with a difficult history of survival and resistance.

The production represents a substantial Washington family collaboration. Denzel Washington acts as executive producer, with his sons Malcolm directing and John David starring. This is Denzel Washington’s third adaptation of Wilson’s work, following...

How ‘The Piano Lesson’ Builds on Denzel and Pauletta Washington’s Family Legacy With Malcolm, John David and Katia Washington Taking the Lead
Image
It’s been a big weekend for the Washington family.

While patriarch Denzel Washington chewed the scenery on multiplex screens in “Gladiator II,” the next generation of Washingtons stormed onto streaming with the film adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winner “The Piano Lesson.” With the Netflix film, Denzel and Pauletta Washington’s kids — director Malcolm, actor John David and producer Katia — add to both their family mythos and Wilson’s legacy.

“We’re standing on the shoulders of the Wilsonians,” John David Washington told Variety at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Nov. 19, listing artists who’ve appeared in Wilson’s works on stage and screen, including his father, Viola Davis, Samuel L. Jackson, Latanya Richardson Jackson, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Charles Dutton.

“They showed us how to do it,” he said. “Hopefully the younger generation will be inspired by what’s possible with these words.”

What to watch this weekend November 22, 2024: Movie awards contenders
Image
Our top pick this week, “Blitz,” is a serious Oscar contender in many categories, including Best Picture, Best Sound, and Best Supporting Actress for Saoirse Ronan, who could be a double nominee this year for this and “The Outrun.” Steve McQueen — a Best Picture winner for “12 Years a Slave” — directs this World War II drama, his first feature in six years, which follows a boy (Elliott Heffernan) as he tries to reunite with his mother (Ronan) during the Blitz of London.

“Blitz” is a sweeping, old-fashioned British WWII movie — perhaps a little too old-fashioned to be a top-tier modern awards contender, as it’s tracking outside of the top five in many of our predictions categories, including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Reviews have been positive but not effusive, especially compared to McQueen’s earlier work. But you can expect it to pick up a few noms. It...

John David Washington Calls Danielle Brooks and Danielle Deadwyler the Next Viola Davis
Image
In the screen adaptation of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson, several actors who starred in the 2022 Broadway production of the 1987 play reprise their roles onscreen. That includes John David Washington in the role of Boy Willie Charles, Samuel L. Jackson as Doacker Charles, Michael Potts as Wining Boy Charles, and Ray Fisher as Lymon.

In the role of Boy Willie’s sister Berniece Charles — who Academy Award-nominated Danielle Brooks portrayed in the play — comes Danielle Deadwyler, known for her portrayal of Mamie Till in 2022’s Till.

“These Black women are killing it, right?” John David told The Hollywood Reporter of working alongside the actresses onscreen and onstage at the Los Angeles premiere of the film at the Egyptian Theater on Tuesday. “These Black women can go. The Piano Lesson
Image
Play-to-film adaptations can often flourish thanks to the little tricks and turns that only the silver screen can provide: whether it’s Jack Nicholson’s claustrophobic close-up as he exclaims guilt in A Few Good Men, or the frantic editing of Amadeus. On the other hand, some adaptations do too little and end up feeling literally ‘stagey’ as a result. With The Piano Lesson in particular, it feels like not much has been gained by re-rendering this Pulitzer- winner on celluloid.

Adapted from August Wilson’s play — part of the ‘Pittsburgh Cycle’ that includes Fences and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (all three now Denzel Washington-produced films) — The Piano Lesson is set in 1936 in Pittsburgh, where the Charles family live, with a large piano sitting unused in their house. Doaker (Samuel L. Jackson) explains the musical instrument’s tragic backstory: enslaved ancestors were traded so that the white head...

Malcolm Washington Built His Family Legacy Into Directorial Debut ‘The Piano Lesson’: “A Big Part Of This Was Based On My Grandfather”
Image
For director Malcolm Washington, generational Black resilience and complex familial bonds are the underlying themes in front of and behind the camera for Netflix’s The Piano Lesson. Making his feature film debut, Washington enlisted the talents of his family as his brother, John David Washington, plays the lead role alongside appearances from his mother, Pauletta, and twin sister, Olivia. Older sister, Katia and father Denzel Washington are producers. Based on August Wilson’s 1987 play, the story centers around a bitter feud between two siblings (played by John David and Danielle Deadwyler) who disagree about what to do with the family’s antebellum-era heirloom piano.

Deadline: How did this adaptation find its way to you? Did Virgil Williams approach you first?

Malcolm Washington: He was involved in it many years before this started, but I don’t think he worked on it yet. So, I approached him with a take that I thought was interesting.

Denzel Washington May Have Just Killed All Hope For The Equalizer 4
Image
Denzel Washington's talk of retirement may have just permanently ruled out The Equalizer 4. It's shocking to think that before the second entry of The Equalizer movie franchise, Washington had never appeared in a sequel. Of course, it helps that the concept loaned itself to other standalone stories, where Denzel's vigilante McCall rights the wrongs that the law can't (or won't). The Equalizer 3's ending saw McCall retire to a quiet little Italian town, seemingly leaving his equalizing days behind for good.

Regardless of the film wrapping up McCall's story and giving the character a shot to live in peace, there was still hope for a potential Equalizer 4. The character is still alive, and so long as a good concept is found, there's no reason to think the series couldn't run for another sequel or two. Ultimately, it feels there is a lack of desire on Washington's part for more,...

Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Potts on ‘The Piano Lesson’ Oscar buzz: ‘I don’t think acting’s a contest’
Image
After appearing in the play version of “The Piano Lesson” on Broadway, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Potts now star in Netflix’s film adaptation, which has been garnering Oscar buzz since it debuted on the festival circuit. Gold Derby recently sat down with the actors for a fun chat in which they talk about, among other things, what they hope audiences will take away from the movie. Watch the video interview above.

“I hope they see my ass on the screen, and not some ancestor — me,” Jackson jokes. He then declares, “We hope they enjoy it and that the story resonates with them. You know, everybody’s had that moment where somebody’s passed and there’s a thing that’s about to be divided up, or one thing that somebody said was left to them.” The 2021 Academy Honorary Award recipient is also looking forward to viewers “making choices...

Was John David Duggar at Jason Duggar’s wedding?
Image
John David Duggar has been busy with Medic Corps responding to the damage Helene did in the southeast.

He has been part of the team for years, and they were deployed to the area over a week ago to help aid the citizens in need.

However, his brother, Jason Duggar, was due to marry Maddie Grace Jones on October 3, and there was speculation that he could not attend the event.

Jason and Maddie Grace were married in Newport, Tennessee, which isn’t far from many affected areas.

It seems that John David could attend the wedding and watch as his little brother married his bride.

But it may have been only 24 hours, as he appears to be back in the zone with the other Medic Corps volunteers.

John David makes it to Jason Duggar’s wedding

Abbie Grace Burnett shared a family photo on her Instagram Story showing that John David Duggar attended the wedding.

J.D. Souther on How He Helped Write All Those Eagles Songs: The Lost Interview
Image
At New York’s City Winery two years ago, both sides of the late J.D. Souther were on display. In a tidy dressing room backstage, Souther, looking like a dapper Old West ranch owner in his tailored suit and white hair and whiskers, was regaling a few visitors with stories. Among them were several women who were longtime fans of the songs he wrote with, or for, the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt — and of the charismatic Souther himself. It wasn’t hard to see why: Adhering to his legend, Souther remained,...

Jinger Vuolo in Jill & Jessa Counting On (2015)
Here’s what Jinger Duggar said about having twins
Jinger Vuolo in Jill & Jessa Counting On (2015)
Jinger Duggar and her husband, Jeremy Vuolo, are parents to two little girls.

They haven’t discussed expanding their family, only noting that they weren’t planning to have as many children as possible.

Their most recent podcast talked about their struggles during their first year of marriage, including Jinger’s “identity crisis.”

Earlier this year, Jinger’s brother, Jedidiah Duggar, and his wife, Katelyn Nakatsu, revealed they were expecting the first set of twin Duggar grandchildren.

Jed is himself a twin, and Michelle Duggar welcomed two sets of fraternal twins: John David and Jana and Jed and Jeremiah.

That sparked Jinger’s comments during an earlier Q&a episode of her podcast about having twins of her own.

Jinger Duggar thinks having twins is a ‘faster way’ to have more babies

While briefly expanding on the fact that Jinger Duggar and Jeremy Vuolo are open to having more children, the...

John David Washington Says Taking ‘The Piano Lesson’ From Broadway to Netflix Was ‘A Liberating Experience’ | Wrap Studio
Image
With “The Piano Lesson,” John David Washington had the rare acting opportunity to interpret August Wilson’s classic text for the stage in Broadway’s 2022 revival and now again in Netflix’s new feature adaptation, due Nov. 22.

Speaking with TheWrap as part of our TIFF 2024 interview and photo studio, Washington shared that playing Boy Willie on both stage and screen was “a liberating experience.” It helped, too, that he was led behind the camera by his brother Malcolm Washington, who makes his feature film directorial debut with “The Piano Lesson.”

“[It was] a liberating experience, given my reverence and my respect for the our filmmaker, for our director, our leader — what he envisioned, how he wanted to open up this story cinematically,” John David told TheWrap.

Speaking alongside co-stars Danielle Deadwyler, Corey Hawkins, Ray Fisher and Michael Potts (the latter two of whom also starred in the Broadway revival), John David celebrated...

‘The Piano Lesson’: Malcolm Washington, John David Washington, Danielle Deadwyler discussed the film in NYC
Image
“The Piano Lesson” director Malcolm Washington wasn’t “trying to dishonor August [Wilson] in any way, but we were trying to tell the story for modern audiences in a way that I think communicates and articulates clearly visually,” as opposed to how it’s experienced on stage. He discussed the film, about a Black family in 1930s Pittsburgh and the title family heirloom that divides them, at a special screening and Q&a in New York City on September 12. He was joined by producer Todd Black, executive producer Katia Washington, and actors John David Washington and Danielle Deadwyler.

Malcolm continued, “This work is so layered, right? There’s so many elements at play here. There’s a lot of tones at play. There’s a lot of subtext in-between the lines, and we wanted to honor that and bring it out visually.

The Piano Lesson Review: Danielle Deadwyler Bares Her Soul in Great Film
Image
The Piano Lesson is yet another adaptation of one of August Wilson's plays that Denzel Washington, as producer, has successfully shepherded from the stage to the screen, following 2016's Fences and 2020's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. This time around, it's a whole-family affair, with sons John David Washington and Malcolm Washington, as actor and director/co-writer respectively, and daughter Katia Washington, as executive producer, on-board. The film made its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and will release on Netflix on November 22 and it's not a film to be missed.

It's 1936 in The PIano Lesson, and John David is Boy Willie Charles, a boisterous and charismatic man who wants to sell his family's heirloom piano in order to be able to buy the land upon which his ancestors were once enslaved. However, his sister Berniece (Danielle Deadwyler) vehemently protests the idea, not that she uses the piano or even plays it.

The Piano Lesson review – powerful yet patchy August Wilson drama
Danielle Deadwyler
Toronto film festival: fantastic performances from Danielle Deadwyler and Samuel L Jackson enliven a soulful, if imbalanced, Netflix adaptation

The Piano Lesson is the third film, after Fences and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, that Denzel Washington has produced from playwright August Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle. It’s also the finest. And this time, it’s a family affair.

The film stars Washington’s oldest son, John David, and is directed by his youngest, Malcolm. His daughters, Katia and Olivia, are also involved, as producer and actor in a small role respectively. And as the credits roll, there’s a dedication to the children’s mother, Pauletta. Call it projection, but it’s hard not to get sentimental about the kids getting together to grapple with this story. The Piano Lesson is about siblings fighting over the legacy their parents and ancestors passed down to them.

‘The Piano Lesson’ Director Malcolm Washington on Adapting August Wilson’s Haunting Play For a New Generation: ‘The Vision We Were Presenting Is Pretty Bold’
Image
The first time Malcolm Washington attended the Toronto International Film Festival, he was a spectator, along for the ride as his older brother, actor John David Washington, debuted a film.

“I’m a movie lover — like, I’m a student of the game and a fan first, so I was watching a bunch of movies. I remember sitting there like, ‘I hope I get to experience this on the other side of it,’ Malcolm Washington tells Variety. That memory sprang to mind when he learned that “The Piano Lesson,” his film adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play and his feature directorial debut, had been selected for TIFF. “It’s surreal.’”

When the Netflix film makes its international premiere on Tuesday night at the Princess of Wales Theatre, Malcolm won’t take the “seasoned vet approach.” He plans to sit through the screening. “You make movies for audiences — to connect with people,...

Ray Fisher Says ‘The Piano Lesson’ Was a ‘Palette Cleanser’ After ‘Career Hardships’ Due to DC Studios Controversy
Image
Ray Fisher ignites the screen as Lymon, the best friend of lead character Boy Willie Charles, played by John David Washington, in Netflix’s period drama “The Piano Lesson.” His portrayal has even sparked some early Oscar buzz.

Fisher’s last few years have been challenging following his public dispute with “Justice League” director Joss Whedon and former DC Films president Walter Hamada. But this project offers Fisher a chance to move forward.

“What helped this entire process is, I’ve got to give it up to August Wilson,” Fisher said during an interview at the Variety Studio, sponsored by J.Crew and SharkNinja, at the Toronto International Film Festival. “The juxtaposition that existed within the piece, within the character. I think there’s a little of Lymon Jackson in all of us. There’s an innocence about him in this piece that many lose as time passes, especially when you endure such hardship.

Exclusive: The 60th Chicago International Film Festival has named the Netflix film The Piano Lesson as its opener, and the fest award first time director and co-writer Malcolm Washington its Breakthrough Award. The film’s star, John David Washington, will be presented the Spotlight Award “in recognition of the emotional complexity and power he brings to his transfixing performance as Boy Willie.”

Samuel L. Jackson's Next Movie Role Is A Character Denzel Washington Was Born To Play
Image
Samuel L. Jackson is slated to star in the 2024 movie, The Piano Lesson, which is exciting but also a bit odd, as Denzel Washington would have been the perfect person to cast. The Piano Lesson is an upcoming movie set in Pittsburgh in 1936. In the aftermath of the Great Depression, the Charles family faces their past, particularly in relation to a family heirloom: a piano engraved by a former slave. The movie is based on the play of the same name by August Wilson. The movie is set for release on Netflix on November 22, 2024.

In The Piano Lesson, Samuel L. Jackson's character is Doaker Charles. As Doaker's children, Boy Willie and Berniece, argue over what to do with the piano, Doaker provides the dark history of the piano. This makes it more than just a piece of property or an asset, but turns it into an important token of their family history.

Danielle Deadwyler Struck All the Right Notes With Denzel’s ‘The Piano Lesson’ (and She Won’t Be Snubbed Again)
Image
On a bright, late summer day in midtown Manhattan, the city’s bustling sidewalk traffic has been brought to a standstill. Clutching morning coffees, a small gaggle of curious onlookers have gathered on a Fifth Avenue corner to watch Danielle Deadwyler pose for a photographer who can’t get enough of the gamine star’s enviable beauty. It helps that Deadwyler, sporting a perilously low-plunging Sportmax sheath dress and demure white patent leather pumps, is putting on quite the show, serving a range of looks — from coquettish to fierce — in rapid-fire succession. “Is she famous,” a tourist, thrilled to be enjoying a New York moment, asks. “Should I know her?”

The answer is a definitive yes. Though not yet a household name, Deadwyler has been delivering the type of performances that garner rapturous praise from critics, co-stars and fans alike. An actor’s actor, she shined as the tortured graphic...

Telluride Wrap: Cannes Winners Are Festival Crowdpleasers as ‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘Anora,’ and More Launch Oscar Campaigns
Image
The 2024 Telluride Film Festival was a success on many fronts, delivering packed screenings (and commensurate turnaways) at the big titles booked in the popular venues, with smaller turnouts for docs and classic titles in the less-frequented theaters. Below, IndieWire lays out the festival hits, commercial breakouts, Oscar contenders, and distribution seekers.

Festival Holdovers

The Telluride movies that played best for audiences were already anointed with credibility from prior festival reviews and/or prizes. That includes Cannes prize-winners “Emilia Pérez”, “Anora”, “All We Imagine as Light”, and “The Seed of the Sacred Fig”, the banned Iranian film submitted for Oscar consideration by Germany. All will be strong Oscar contenders, assuming that “All We Imagine as Light” is submitted by India or France for Best International Film, which is not a foregone conclusion. From Sundance was secret screening “A Real Pain” (Searchlight), starring Kieran Culkin and writer/director Jesse Eisenberg, which played...

Exclusive: Pauletta Pearson Washington says that the film adaptation of August Wilson’s acclaimed play The Piano Lesson has been a family affair. “All my babies are involved in this,” the actor, musician and philanthropist declares.

“My son directed it,” she says pointing to filmmaker Malcolm Washington, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Virgil Williams.

“And John David’s in it,” Washington adds, referring to her eldest child, the actor John David Washington.

“And so is Olivia, we play the same role at different ages,” she says proudly of daughter Olivia Washington.

“And here’s Katia,” who was seated by her at a cocktail party hosted by Netflix to celebrate the streamer’s roster of movies being screened at the Telluride Film Festival.

Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington on the Transformative Impact of ‘The Piano Lesson’
Image
Despite Samuel L. Jackson being the one to originate the role of Boy Willie in the first production of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson” at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 1987, his wife Latanya Richardson Jackson completely banned him from talking to John David Washington about taking on the role when they began working together on the 2022 Broadway revival that she directed. “So the whole time we did the play, I had no Boy Willie conversations with him. I didn’t tell him what to do,” said the actor to IndieWire during a recent phone conversation. “He had to find certain things on his own because Boy Willie is a complicated character and you have to have a certain amount of comfortability in your understanding of him to be able to get those things out of your mouth that he’s saying.”

Still, in speaking to both Jackson and Washington about said character,...

Telluride: ‘The Piano Lesson’ wins raves for Danielle Deadwyler
Image
The buzz heading into the world premiere of “The Piano Lesson” at the Telluride Film Festival suggested that star Danielle Deadwyler will be a serious Oscar threat at next year’s ceremony, with the actress leading in the supporting category in the Gold Derby odds at this early stage of the season. Now that the Malcolm Washington film has screened, expect her front-runner speculation to continue for Deadwyler, who is given several standout moments in the Netflix drama.

Based on the August Wilson play of the same name and co-written by Washington and Virgil Williams, “The Piano Lesson” is largely set in 1936 – although the drama’s inciting incident occurred in 1911. The film focuses on “the lives of the Charles family in the Doaker Charles (Jackson) household and an heirloom, the family piano, which documents the family history through carvings made by their enslaved ancestor.” Washington’s brother, John David Washington,...
