The series is based on the novels by Nevada Barr.

Coates will play Jeremiah Paulson, a wealthy landowner not afraid to break the rules.

In addition to Spiridakos, Ronnie Rowe Jr is also part of the series-regular cast. Coates joins a recurring cast that also includes the previously announced Jordan Sledz, Crystle Lightning and Nikki Hallow.

Hallmark has revealed that it will have 40 all-new, original movies for both its flagship channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, as well as special content for Hallmark Movies Now, the company’s subscription streaming service.

Just a day after earning 19 nominations at the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards for its first season, the CBC and BET+ series has been cancelled.

The series, inspired by true events, followed the story of Black train porters in 1920s Montreal, Detroit and Chicago attempting to secure safer working conditions.

Through the eight-part series, the workers unite to form the first Black-led labour union in North America, battling racism and corporate greed along the way.

Executive producer Jennifer Kawaja told The Canadian Press that while CBC had been pushing for a second season “until the bitter end,” their American partner BET+ decided not to move forward.

On Wednesday, the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (the Canadian Academy) announced the nominees in 145 television, film, and digital media categories, which also include the inaugural nominations in gender-neutral performance categories for lead and supporting performers in film and television.

The first season of CBC’s “The Porter” leads both television and overall 2023 Canadian Screen Award nominations with 19 nods, including Best Drama Series and Best Lead Performer, Drama Series nominations for Aml Ameen, Ronnie Rowe Jr., and Mouna Traoré.

The Canadian Screen Awards has unveiled nominations for the national film and TV prize-giving, and the CBC civil rights drama The Porter leads the film and TV field with 19 mentions in all, including for best small-screen drama.

The first Canadian drama series from an all-Black creative team, which also streams on BET+, centers on the lives of Black train porters and their families as they launch North America’s first Black labor union in the 1920s.

The TV categories, voted on by around 3,000 Canadian industry insiders, also sees the CBC series Detention Adventure and Sort Of – a Peabody award-winning show about a gender fluid young Muslim in Toronto played by Bilal Baig — nab 15 nominations each in an awards show shaping up to be a major showcase for people of color.

That follows Canadian film, and TV industry efforts to ensure diversity and inclusivity in the country’s indie production sector and prize-giving process.

There's a lot of unusual redundancy in Star Trek: Discovery, and the USS Discovery has doubled many of the ranks seen in other Star Trek shows. Hallmark Christmas movies remain as cozy as ever, with tree-lighting, cookie-decorating and magical snowfall still the currency of the realm. But since the arrival of Wonya Lucas as the new CEO of Hallmark Media (formerly Crown Media) in 2020, the network’s offerings have branched out in many ways: Lots more diversity, of course — including, this year, Hallmark’s first holiday romance centered on a same-sex relationship and the network’s first film focused on Kwanzaa — but also new and different plots.

The memes show no sign of dying, but the movies themselves don’t always match the traditional roadmap. Two of this year’s new movies didn’t end with a kiss, a change previously unthinkable in Hallmark-land.

The CBC and BET+ are putting out another call for The Porter.

There’s no official announcement just yet, but the Canadian and U.S. TV platforms are set to renew the civil rights drama about 1920s Black train employees and their families in Montreal and Chicago for a second season.

Showrunner Annmarie Morais and director Charles Officer talked to The Hollywood Reporter as scripts are being readied to continue portraying Black train porters’ efforts to launch North America’s first Black labor union.

The second season will also take another step toward reframing Black Canadian history as the first Canadian drama to boast an all-Black creative team, on whose shoulders rest the pressure to succeed and create opportunities for others to tell their own stories that center Black identity. Star Trek: Discovery season 3 reaches its eighth episode this Thursday, and it promises to dive deeper into what makes Book tick. The Hallmark Channel on Wednesday said it has renewed its flagship daily lifestyle series Home & Family for a ninth season along with reupping its original series Good Witch for Season 7 and Chesapeake Shores for Season 5 as Crown Media Family Networks unveiled is 2020-21 programming slate.

Crown Media also announced the first 18 of 40 Christmas movies planned for the company’s two flagship networks, Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. In the works are projects with the likes of current network regulars Ashley Williams and Kimberly Williams-Paisley on a two-part movie about real sisters, with each of them playing the lead in one of the films. The company is also developing projects with Holly Robinson Peete and Tamera Mowry-Housley.

Both Hallmark Channel’s “Countdown to Christmas” and Hm&m’s “Miracles of Christmas” movie blocks will kick off October 23, Crown Media said, the former with 23 new original films and the latter with 17 originals.

If you're already adrift without another Hallmark Original Series to watch, you're not alone.

But we have good news today as Crown Media announced new original programming and some renewals we've been waiting for.

Most importantly, there are two renewals to announce that join When Calls the Heart for (fingers crossed) a 2021 release.

Good Witch will return for a seventh season, and Chesapeake Shores will return for a fifth season!

As you know, Good Witch Season 6 just ended on quite the cliffhanger.

It was the first season in which Bailee Madison didn't appear as Grace, and in Rhys Matthew Bond only made guest appearances as Nick.

The film is about a black police officer who is pushed to the edge, taking out his frustrations on the privileged community he's sworn to protect. Prototype (Blake Williams)The 36th Vancouver Film Festival recently wrapped, and with it, the second year of the Future//Present program, a selection of eight features (and a number of shorts) dedicated to emerging Canadian filmmakers. If the inaugural edition had the task of distinguishing itself from the rest of the festival's True North “stream,” this year's offered the opportunity to cement its relevancy and expand its vision. That's something for which the admirably varied program proved more or less able, albeit with higher highs and lower lows than in 2016, which speaks, at least, to chances being taken (something that can't necessarily be said of the festival's programming in general). Between its success at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it premiered earlier this year, and here at Viff, where it won the Canadian Feature award, Black Cop has become something of a sensation. Its concept is an undeniably timely, intriguing one -- a black police officer 'flips the script' by profiling and roughing up white people -- and director Cory Bowles executes it admirably.
