“I’m real late to the Sondheim game, sadly,” Beth Leavel tells Gold Derby as she thinks back to her first memory of a Stephen Sondheim song or show. Nominations for the 2025 Drama League Awards were announced Tuesday by current Broadway stars Sarah Hyland (The Great Gatsby) and Orville Peck (Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club). Winners will be announced May 19 at a ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.

The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and off-Broadway productions and stand out for their catch-all acting category, the Distinguished Performance Award. An actor can only win it once in their career. After they have won, they can never be nominated again. This year, 51 performers are nominated. There is no crossover between members who vote on the Drama League Awards and the Tonys, but the nominations can nevertheless be revealing as to which performances and productions break through, or not, with this group’s expanded categories.

Emily in Paris star Ashley Park, Modern Family‘s Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Andrew Rannells braved the rain to witness the Broadway-bound production of Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends at the Ahmanson Theatre on Thursday (February 13) in Los Angeles.

Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends is a musical revue celebrating the legendary composer’s illustrious career, spanning “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from Gypsy, a medley from Sweeney Todd,” “Somewhere” from West Side Story” and most unforgettably, “Being Alive” from Company. The show features an ensemble cast of Broadway veterans, including Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga, delivering heartfelt renditions of Sondheim’s most beloved works. The Los Angeles run serves as a prelude to the show’s Broadway transfer, with previews set to begin on March 25 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre and an official opening on April 8.

Exclusive: Lea Salonga is set to star in The Vale – Origins, a hybrid live-action and animated short film that will precede the forthcoming middle grade novel of the same name by Abigail Hing Wen.

Wen’s novel will release Sept. 16, 2025 through Aapi publishing house Third State Books, founded by Stephanie Lim and Charles Kim. The short film is in post production and slated for completion this summer. Historically, winning those two accolades in particular would bode well for a show’s chances at Best Musical. With 36 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2024 Tony nominations snubs was “Patriots.” Peter Morgan‘s history play about Russia earned three Olivier Award nominations last year, including Best New Play, Actor (Tom Hollander) and Featured Actor (Will Keen). In New York, it only scored one for Michael Stuhlbarg, who took over the role played by Hollander in the UK; Keen, who reprises his role as Vladimir Putin, did not score a nomination in a category stuffed with “Stereophonic” performers.

The revival of “The Who’s Tommy” also significantly underperformed. Gold Derby users predicted it would land three nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Best Choreographer for Lorin Latarro, but it only earned one bid in the top revival category.

Eden Espinosa received support from fellow Wicked alum Shoshana Bean at the opening night performance of her new musical on Sunday (April 14) at the Longacre Theatre in New York City.

For those who don’t know, Eden and Shoshana both got their big breaks as the standby for Elphaba during Idina Menzel‘s run in Wicked on Broadway. Both of them later became full-time Elphaba stars and had long runs in the beloved musical.

Eden Espinosa is back on Broadway!

The beloved entertainer just made her return to the New York stage in the original musical Lempicka, nearly 20 years after she played Elphaba in Wicked.

For those who don’t know, Eden was Idina Menzel‘s standby for Elphaba in the original Broadway cast of Wicked. She left the show to lead the musical Brooklyn and later returned to Wicked as the full-time Elphaba. Her most recent Broadway appearance was as the final Maureen in Rent in 2008, over 15 years ago!

Eden is now originating the title role in Lempicka, a new musical about the true story of renowned artist Tamara de Lempicka.

Elton’s Prada has found its Devil: Vanessa Williams has been cast as Miranda Priestly in the upcoming West End production of the Elton John-Shaina Taub stage musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada.

The long-anticipated The Devil Wears Prada opens October 24 at the Dominion Theatre in London.

Williams, who played the similarly chic Wilhelmina Slater in TV’s Ugly Betty, said in a statement, “Bringing Miranda Priestly to life in the West End is an absolute dream come true. Gird your loins, folks.”

In 1964 Barbra Streisand became a star when she opened the original Broadway production of “Funny Girl” as real-life actress, singer and comedian Fanny Brice. Despite rave reviews, she ended up losing the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical to Carol Channing for “Hello, Dolly!” But in 1968 Babs made her motion picture debut in a film adaptation of “Funny Girl” directed by William Wyler, reprising her role as Fanny. Sir Elton John just announced an overhaul of his musical based on 2006's The Devil Wears Prada, which has suffered recently from scathing critic reviews. Although John was seen to be the composer of the musical, it looks like he and the production team are going to take a bit more time to work on the script "since it's not ready. It'll be [...] about another year" (via broadwayworld.com).

Based on the Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep film, and a 2003 book of the same name, the musical drew much inspiration from its music-less predecessors, but the show features notable differences from the source material. With the writers spending another year on the production, there's likely going to be even more differences in the future.

The Elton John-Shaina Taub stage musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada, which recently ended a five-week engagement in Chicago, is “not ready” for subsequent stagings, John said today, seeming to end speculation that a Broadway or West End production was in the immediate offing.

“Devil Wears Prada was in preview in Chicago, and it’s not ready,” John said in an interview with BBC Radio2’s Zoe Ball, who asked if the show was coming to London. “It’ll be ready in about another year. We can’t get our theater anyways.”

In the meantime, the rock icon will focus on Tammy Faye, the musical he co-wrote with Jake Schears that opens this fall at London’s Almeida Theater.

Exclusive: The pre-Broadway engagement of the Elton John-Shaina Taub musical The Devil Wears Prada is showing its fashion sense for the first time in Prada-appropriate stylized photos provided exclusively to Deadline.

The musical, which begins a limited five-week Chicago engagement on July 19, stars Beth Leavel as Miranda Priestly and Taylor Iman Jones as Andy Sachs – the roles played by Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in the 2006 film version – and the new photos show the actors looking suitably chic as the iconic fashionistas.

In case you somehow missed Lauren Weisberger’s best-selling 2003 novel or the subsequent hit film, The Devil Wears Prada tells the story of young Andy Sachs (Jones) who has just landed a dream job at the fashion bible Runway Magazine. The dream, of course, turns nightmarish thanks to the tyrannical rule and rigidly high standards of Editor-in-Chief Miranda Priestly (Leavel), an Anna Wintour-ish diva who takes no prisoners.

The stage musical adaptation of NBC’s Smash is “alive and kicking,” says producer Neil Meron, and he and composer Marc Shaiman have the photos to prove it.

Both Meron and Shaiman posted photos – and, in Shaiman’s case, some Broadway-belting-style audio clips – of an all-star reading of the work in progress, with Meron writing, “Last week, Robert Greenblatt, myself and an unnamed producing partner, who has many incredible movie credits on his resume, proudly assembled this creative team that is breathing new life into our TV series—amazing book by writers Rick Elice and Bob Martin, the iconic score and then some by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and musical director extraordinaire Stephen Oremus.”

The 2021-2022 Broadway season has been quite a busy one for actor Brandon J. Dirden. First he appeared opposite Phylicia Rashad in Manhattan Theatre Club’s presentation of Dominique Morisseau‘s play “Skeleton Crew” this past winter. Now he can be seen in Second Stage Theater’s revival of Richard Greenberg‘s 2003 Tony-winning play “Take Me Out.” After having previously appeared in award-winning Broadway productions of “Clybourne Park” (2012), “All the Way” (2014), and “Jitney” (2017), will either of Dirden’s two main stem appearances from this past year make him a first-time Tony nominee?

In “Skeleton Crew,” Dirden played Reggie, the manager of one of the last auto stamping plants in Detroit. The company is on shaky ground and the workers have to make choices about how to move forward if their plant goes under. All the while Reggie is torn between doing right by his work family and the red tape in his office.

Paul Rudnick‘s “Playing The Palace” has been years in the making. The novel follows a New York City event planner named Carter Ogden who unexpectedly sparks a love affair with Edgar, the openly gay Crown Prince of England.

After working on the first draft for almost a year, Rudnick revealed that he spent many months revising the romantic comedy with editor Cindy Wong during the pandemic. The novel seems to have been released at the right time as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are currently making the royal family more accessible than ever before. The author joked that the Duke of Sussex himself would be a perfect casting to play Edgar.

“I am convinced that this just happened in reality,” Rudnick cracked Tuesday during a Strand Book Store virtual conversation with Variety‘s senior culture and event editor Marc Malkin. “I think that is certainly Harry’s next step and I would welcome it.

Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, “The Prom” begins with a quartet of self absorbed actors from New York. When their latest Broadway show closes after being ravaged by critics, they need a boost to their career and images. Enter Emma (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman), a high school senior from a small Midwest town, who makes national headlines when her school forbids her from attending prom with her girlfriend. The big city actors descend on the town in hopes of changing minds and generating positive press. And they do it with good old fashioned song and dance. The movie also features performances from Ariana DeBose, Kerry Washington, Keegan-Michael Key, Tracey Ullman, and Kevin Chamberlin.

After having won six Primetime Emmys for his TV work in the past decade, Ryan Murphy is now aiming for the Oscars with his upcoming Netflix musical “The Prom.” The streaming giant dropped some official — and very glittery — stills from the film on Wednesday, which will be released on Dec. 11. The all star cast includes three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep, 10-time Emmy winner James Corden, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, Emmy winner Keegan-Michael Key, two-time Tony nominee Andrew Rannells, Tony nominee Ariana DeBose, Emmy winner Kerry Washington and newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman.

An adaptation of the 2018 Broadway musical of the same name, the film follows four eccentric Broadway stars who are in desperate need of career revivals. They find a stage and a cause when they hear about Emma Nolan (Pellman), a high school student in a small Indiana town who is forbidden from bringing her girlfriend Alyssa (DeBose) to prom.

Producer Ryan Murphy drew the curtain back on the cast of Netflix’s The Prom, sharing a first-look photo of the “icon-packed” group on Instagram.

Roger Horchow, a Cincinnati-born entrepreneur who parlayed a luxury mail-order fortune into a Tony Award-winning streak as a producer on Broadway, died Saturday in Dallas of cancer. He was 91.

The founder in 1971 of he Horchow Collection luxury mail-order catalog, Horchow sold the company to Neiman Marcus in 1988, and by 1992 had won his first Tony Award as producer of Crazy For You, a “new” George Gershwin musical inspired by 1930’s Girl Crazy. Directed by Mike Ockrent and choreographed by Ockrent’s future wife Susan Stroman, Crazy For You was a smash, garnering awards and audiences enthralled by its classic Gershwin score and refreshingly contemporary style.

Six years later Horchow and co-producer Roger Berlind mounted a revival of Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate, starring Marin Mazzie, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Michael Berresse. It, too, was a hit, winning the Tony for Best Musical Revival.

Tony Award winner Beth Leavel has been cast in the pre-Broadway production of The Devil Wears Prada as tyrannical fashion editor Miranda Priestly, while Taylor Iman Jones (Broadway’s Head Over Heels) will take the role of her put-upon assistant Andy Sachs, producers announced today.

The casting announcement comes as the pre-Broadway engagement in Chicago was postponed a year, from a planned July 2020 start to July 2021. The musical will play a limited engagement at Broadway in Chicago’s Cibc Theatre (a move from the previously announced James M. Nederlander Theatre) from July 13-August 15, 2021.

The Broadway plans, including casting, have not been announced. Additional casting and creative team for Chicago will be announced later.

Performers from across the spectrum of Disney’s stage productions will participate in a one-night benefit concert marking Disney’s 25th anniversary on Broadway and benefitting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Whoopi Goldberg has also signed up to appear.

Called “Celebrating 25 Magical Years of Disney on Broadway,” the concert will feature performers from Frozen, Tarzan, Beauty and the Beast, along with such other non-Disney Broadway hits as Hamilton and Mean Girls.

The benefit is set for Monday, November 4, at Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theater, currently home to Disney’s Aladdin.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS was founded in 1998 and has raised more than $300 million for essential services for people with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses across the United States.

Last week, many fans who couldn't fit in the theater got to enjoy part of the final performance of The Prom courtesy of Beth Leavel's personal publicist. Lisa Goldberg, founder of her own Lsg Public Relations, put up on her social media pages two-minutes-20-seconds of Leavel singing the song 'The Lady's Improving' with a note that said she recorded six minutes 'including 1.5 minutes of entrance applause' and 'received full permission to post.' The shaky video was clearly shot from a seat in the theater, which would generally be forbidden if there was no permission. So what kind of permission do you need to do this in a Broadway show Well, it is more than a 'sure' from a producer.
