‘The Biggest Fan’: Kate del Castillo and Diana Bovio Star in this Mexican Netflix Comedy
Kate del Castillo in Beaucoup trop fan (2025)
“The Biggest Fan” stars Kate del Castillo and Diana Bovio, who form a comedic duo in this film that delves into the turbulent world of modern celebrity and fan obsession.

The premise centers on Lana Cruz (del Castillo), an actress whose Hollywood career has been derailed by cancellation, forcing her to seek a comeback opportunity in Mexico. Her path to redemption, however, takes an unexpected turn when she encounters Polly Melgar (Diana Bovio), her self-proclaimed biggest fan.

“The Biggest Fan” is a movie that doesn’t aim for much more than entertaining and amusing us for a while: simple characters lead us into hilarious situations with two talented actresses who, in their opposing roles, end up understanding and getting along with each other. It’s a formula we’ve seen work countless times before, and it still works.

A Comeback Complicated by Obsession

The main plot follows Lana Cruz’s...

Image

“Technoboys”: The Most Hilarious Mexican Idol Group on Netflix
Image
“Technoboys” is a Mexican movie starring Luis Gerardo Méndez, Karla Souza and Gabriel Nuncio. It is directed by Gerardo Gatica and Luis Gerardo Méndez, and written by Alexandro Aldrete.

“Technoboys” is one of those uproarious comedies where an old-fashioned boy band aspires to reclaim their musical glory, despite the world around them having transformed dramatically.

A film with a delightful self-awareness: it revels in its own absurdity.

Plot

An aging boy band makes the bold decision to return to the limelight. However, the times have shifted, and so have the members: one is now in a wheelchair, another has reinvented himself as a sexual guru, and a third has transitioned to living as a woman. They must navigate these changes to find success once more!

About the Movie

While it might not be the pinnacle of cinematic achievements—Apocalypse Now likely boasts superior reviews—we found ourselves laughing uncontrollably. “Technoboys...

Guadalajara Wraps Triumphant Return to In-Person Format with Animated Award Ceremony
Image
In a ceremony marked by laughter, tears, a lot of hugs and a celebration of a return to watching films al vivo, the 36th Guadalajara International Film Festival (Ficg) came to a close with the presentation of a long list of prizes to some of Latin America’s top filmmakers, many whose names are well-known in Mexico and across the region and many whose names will, no doubt, be well-known in the future.

In a contradiction fit for the movies, Rodrigo Guardiola and Gabriel Nuncio’s “The Comedian,” a film all about failure, took top honors as this year’s best Mexican film in competition with cinematographer Mario Secco scooping the best cinematography prize for his work on the film.

“It’s wonderful that this movie exists,” said Nuncio at the ceremony. “The truth is, I got to work with very talented people on this movie and I think that...

Panorama Global Announces ‘Desaparecer del todo,’ ‘Moonwalker (Exclusive)
Gerardo Gatica González
Headed by Alberto Müffelmann and Gerardo Gatica, Mexican indie production house Panorama Global has boarded Luis Javier Henaine’s feature “Desaparecer del todo,” a Moonlight Pictures production co-produced with Pablo Zimbron’s Varios Lobos.

The supernatural thriller, based on true events, explores witchcraft in Mexico through the eyes of a tabloid crime photographer.

Varios Lobos and Panorama previously co-produced Henaine’s popular comedy “Ready to Mingle,” and it’s a relationship Müffelmann was eager to rekindle.

“It is not just a business thing either,” he elaborated. “We understand one another well in a creative manner as well as for the economic and financial aspects. We work hand-in-hand. I think we’ve grown together. They came to us as a smaller company, but they are growing at the same time that we are.”

Also announced at Los Cabos, “Moonwalker,” is co-directed by Rodrigo Guardiola (“Zoé: Panoramas”) and Gabriel Nuncio (SXSW player “Cumbres”) of production house Bengala,...

Review: Heights (Cumbres), A Subtle Character Piece Inspired By The Killer Of Cumbres Case
Inspired by a real life high-profile crime that happened in Monterrey, Mexico, Heights (Cumbres) is a film that in the wrong hands could have been a disaster, close to the sensationalist journalism that covered said case back in 2006. However, writer/director Gabriel Nuncio changed the facts and also approached the subject in a rather surprising - and very human - way. I'm even hesitant to write about the so-called "killer of Cumbres" (Cumbres being the name of a neighborhood in Monterrey), because to this day there is still controversy and theories surrounding the case, and that's clearly what Nuncio wanted to stay away from. He didn't want to make a film about Diego Santoy, the young man who is in prison right now for hurting...

SXSW Review: Cumbres
In the later days of SXSW 2014, I caught the movie Cumbres (English translation: Heights), which made its Us premiere at the fest. A quiet film from Mexican writer/director Gabriel Nuncio, Cumbres slowly lets the audience into the world of Miwi (Aglae Lingow) and Juliana (Ivanna Michel). Their parents send the sisters on the road after something horrific happens involving older sister Juliana. We are shown a scar on her arm and told of bloody clothes in the sink. Just like the audience, Miwi is kept in the dark about the true extent of her sibling's troubles. Before they depart, Miwi's father reminds her to keep her thumbs on the outside of the steering wheel as she drives.

The sisters forge their way to Queretaro, where they've been told a family friend will help them. On the way, they pick up and drop off friend Danny, aka aspiring rapper Danisaurio...

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

Neighbors, Faults, We’ll Never Have Paris, Creep & Open Windows Lead SXSW 2014 Film Line-Up
After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.

The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.

Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.

David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Wigon’s Heart Machine, Meyerhoff’s Unicorns, Levine’s Wild Canaries & Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible In 2014 SXSW Comp Line-Up
Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible.
