Biography

Since 2007 he has been General Director of Content at SP Televisão and in 2022 he was chosen for the same role at SPI. He is a screenwriter and his work has been presented at the main international festivals. He teaches at the Escola Superior de Comunicação Social and the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and has lectured all over the world. He has been a jury member for several international festivals. Winner of the International Emmy Awards for Best Telenovela in 2011 for Laços de Sangue. In 2016, he won the Gold Medal at the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards for Coração D'Ouro. In 2019, he was personally nominated for Best Screenwriter at the Seoul Drama Awards. In the same year, he co-authored the Portuguese/Spanish series Auga Seca, shown on HBO. He is the creator and showrunner of Glória, the first Portuguese original series for Netflix in 2020. Glória was the winner of the Sophia 2022 awards, in the category of best series/film, and won a Portuguese Golden Globe in the category of best fiction project. Internationally, Glória was pre-nominated for the Platino Iberoamericano Awards 2022, in the categories of Best Series Creator and Best Series. He is also the creator and showrunner of the Globoplay series Codex 632 (2023), which won the Bronze Medal at the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards, and the author of the Prime Video documentary Sr. President (2024).

Pedro Lopes (1976) is General Content Director of SP Televisão and SPi, screenwriter, playwright, writer and academic. He has a degree in History (FLUL), a Master's Degree in Communication, Cinema and Television (UCP) and is a PhD student in Communication Sciences (ISCTE-IUL).

He writes for film and television and is the author of more than forty titles, including short and feature films, telenovelas, miniseries and series. In 2023 he was selected for the European Showrunner Programme (IFS - Internationale Filmschule Köln).

He teaches at Escola Superior de Comunicação Social and at Universidade Católica de Portugal. As an academic, he has presented lectures in different countries, including the Universidade de São Paulo in Brazil (2014, 2018, 2020), New York University - Steinhardt (2019) and Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (2023).

His work has participated in major international festivals: Rockie Awards, Banff World Media Festival, Prix Europa, Festival de la Fiction La Rochelle, Monte Carlo Television Festival, Roma Fiction Fest, among others. In 2019, he co-authored the Portuguese/Spanish series Auga Seca, the first Portuguese series aired on HBO. In 2020, Netflix announced Glória, its first Portuguese original series, created and written by Pedro Lopes. Glória premiered in 2021 and won the Sophia Awards in the Best Series/Telefilm category, awarded by the Portuguese Film Academy, and the Golden Globe (SIC) for Best TV Series. Internationally, Glória was pre-nominated for the 2022 Ibero-American Platino Awards in the categories of Best Series Creator and Best Series.

In 2023, he premiered the series Codex 632, a co-production of SPi, Globoplay and RTP, of which he is the author and executive producer and which won the Bronze Medal at the New York Festivals TV&Film Awards 2024. In March 2024 he released Sr. Presidente on Prime Video, a three-part documentary on the life of Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, former president of Futebol Clube do Porto.
