‘Simone Biles Rising’ Director Talks Olympian’s Decision to ‘Go All in’ with Netflix Documentary
Image
Simone Biles Rising chronicles the return of the athlete considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all time to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games following her withdrawal from the competition in Tokyo four years earlier. It’s a triumphant tale of athleticism, discipline and resilience that results in Biles doing exactly what she set out to do — win gold medals in the team final and all-around final — but as director Katie Walsh and her production crew documented what Biles dubbed her “redemption tour” in real time, they had no clue how things would turn out.

“It’s making a movie when you don’t know the ending,” says Walsh, who also directed the 2021 Facebook Watch docuseries Simone vs Herself. Both projects were produced by Religion of Sports. “Going into that series, the expectation was that she was going to win all the things and retire, and there was a really hard left turn toward the end.

Image
During the Tokyo Olympics — held in 2021 rather than 2020 because of the pandemic — Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast of all time, pulled out of the competition at the last minute. Leading up to the games, all eyes were on the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team, and Biles’ exit caused a frenzy of vitriol across the globe, especially since there was speculation it would be her final Olympics. But if you’ve followed the gymnast’s career, it’s clear she’s always done the unexpected, and as the 2024 Paris Olympics approach, Biles welcomes viewers into her world. In Netflix’s “Simone Biles Rising,” the world champion reflects on the trajectory of her stunning career, what happened in Tokyo and why she’s chosen to return to the world stage. Simone Biles Makes History For This Reason!
Image
Simone Biles is shattering records left and right. The multiple Olympic gold medalist will be returning to the Olympics in what is her third team. This makes her one of only four women to achieve this feat.

She was already a legend before this, so let’s just pack this up in the bag of legendary things only she can do. Excuse me, who has multiple gymnastic moves named after her? Not me, that’s for sure.

Simone Biles Makes Her Third Olympics Team After Getting Showered With Praise From Former Olympic Champion

On June 30, Simone Biles qualified to join team US A in the trials that took place at Minneapolis and will be off to the Olympic Games next month.

With this, she joins just a handful of gymnasts who have gone on to qualify for three teams over the course of their career: Muriel Grossfeld, Linda Metheny and Dominique Dawes.

When the Rio Olympics cauldron is extinguished on Aug. 21, it will officially mark the end of one Romanian couple's 40-year dominance over the sport of gymnastics, making America's so-called Final Five their last gold medal champions. Martha and Béla Károlyi have coached top American gymnasts since defecting to the country in 1981. From the confines of their ranch in Huntsville, Texas, the husband and wife team eventually overhauled the U.S. approach to the sport, successfully taking over command of the national team nearly 16 years ago. Gabby Douglas Is Today’s Olympian To Watch: Get Acquainted With “The Flying Squirrel”
Before we all put on sleep masks and ear plugs for the day to avoid spoilers about who wins today’s Women’s Gymnastics All-Around Final, let’s take a closer look at one of the favorites. 16-year-old Gabby Douglas flew (quite literally) onto our radar at the Olympic trials, where she edged out reigning world champ and teammate Jordyn Wieber for the #1 spot. At 4’11″, G-Dougs is the shortest shorty on the team, but her presence is huge and we can’t wait to watch her battle it out with fellow superstar Aly Raisman tonight for the gold.

1. Gabby was nicknamed the “Flying Squirrel” by National Team Coordinator/Legend Márta Károlyi for her soaring abilities on the uneven bars.

2. She was born on December 31, 1995 – the last possible day to be age eligible to compete at the 2011 World Championship, where she joined forces with Wieber and Raisman to win the team gold medal,...

Dominique Dawes Relishes Role as National Fitness Motivator
HollywoodNews.com: The London Olympics are now just over a year away, and if gymnastics great Dominique Dawes has her way, the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team will win gold and “people will stop talking about the Magnificent Seven.”

That name, of course, was bestowed on Dawes and her teammates, the gold medal-winning team of the 1996 Summer Olympics. Now, she says, “These young athletes are quite talented and the tricks they’re doing are really impressive. I suppose that when I see them perform, I feel the same way Nadia Comaneci must have felt when she watched us.”

But, forget about the Magnificent Seven? “Oh, yes,” she affirms. “I believe it’s the mark of a good leader to want your successors to surpass you.”

The beautiful, well-spoken Dawes says she’d love to do on-air commentary for the London games. “The sport is my first passion,” she notes.
