The Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez starrer Only Murders in the Building Season 5 will premiere on September 9, 2025. But that’s still far off. Fans want to watch other similar shows in the meantime. Blockhead (2025)
Through the portal of Hell by Paul Risker
Blockhead (2025)
Blockhead Photo: Frightfest

After co-directing and producing the Grierson-nominated documentary American: The Bill Hicks Story, Matt Harlock pivots from exploring the life of the famous American comedian, to the angst of a struggling novelist. This time around, however, Harlock is in narrative territory, and yet he's tapping into genuine anxious doubts and fears.

In Blockhead, Will (Danny Horn) is struggling to complete his second novel. Worried that everything around him will disappear, including his book deal and his girlfriend, he finds a muse in the form of a drunk and psychotic decorator, Mikey (Joe Sims), who might not be real.

Harlock has previously directed the short films Toll, about a parking attendant confronting his past,...

Five FrightFest Facts with Matt Harlock from ‘Blockhead’
Image
What if the voice in your head pushing you toward greatness wasn’t a metaphor, but a flesh-and-blood maniac in paint-splattered overalls? That’s the twisted premise behind Blockhead, the first narrative feature from Matt Harlock, whose previous work chronicled the life of comedian Bill Hicks. This time, Harlock turns the camera on the creative process itself, dissecting the desperation of a blocked novelist who latches onto a destructive new muse. Played by Joe Sims, this supposed saviour might be a hallucination, a devil, or just a dangerously persuasive builder – either way, he drags the protagonist down a dark rabbit hole where art and madness are impossible to separate.

Harlock...

A failing novelist desperate for inspiration to spark his second book thinks his muse appears to him in the form of a drunk, psychotic handyman and decorator.

As the new work begins to take shape, his life spirals out of control and erupts into a violent chaos, charting a descent into madness and ultimately murder. But all that’s fine because his next piece could be a masterwork of genius.

Writer-director Matt Harlock (American: The Bill Hicks Story) makes his narrative feature debut on the film.

Danny Horn, Joe Sims (“Broadchurch”), and Michele Moran star.

‘Blockhead’ Brings Psychotic Home Makeover Horror to FrightFest
Image
Blue Finch Films has unveiled a first look at Blockhead, the surreal psychological thriller from Matt Harlock, which will have its world premiere at FrightFest on 23 August. The feature marks Harlock’s debut as a fiction filmmaker following his acclaimed documentary American: The Bill Hicks Story.

Blockhead stars Danny Horn as a creatively paralysed novelist whose life begins to unravel after he hires a volatile decorator, played by Joe Sims, in a last-ditch bid to kickstart his writing. What begins as an eccentric house call rapidly evolves into a violent, increasingly surreal descent into madness, as the boundaries between author and creation begin to dissolve. Michele Moran, recently seen in The Witcher, co-stars.

Described by its makers as a heady collision of dark comedy and psychological horror, the film explores the fragility of the creative process and the dangerous spaces artists can inhabit when fiction takes on a life of its own.

Blue Finch Films has boarded international sales on two genre titles ahead of their world premieres at FrightFest 2025, adding Eric Owen’s cat-and-mouse thriller “In a Cold Vein” and Matt Harlock’s mind-bending “Blockhead” to its slate.

“In a Cold Vein” marks the second feature from Owen, who is also recognized for his musical work as part of UTA-repped rock duo Black Pistol Fire. The thriller follows a professional criminal who, after surviving an assassination attempt, embarks on a relentless quest to identify his would-be killer and protect his family. Owen wrote and scored the film, which features a lead performance from Evan Gamble (“American Sniper”).

“I’m so excited to be partnering with the folks at Blue Finch, whose body of work speaks for itself, and whom I’ve known for some time,” Owen said. “I can’t wait for audiences to catch the wild ride that is ‘In...

Red Dwarf Xii episode 3 review: Timewave
Mark Harrison Oct 26, 2017

Here's our spoiler-filled review of the latest Red Dwarf Xii episode, Timewave...

This review contains spoilers.

See related The Crown season 2: premiere date set as new trailer arrives

12.3 Timewave

“Are you criticising me?”

This is awkward. If it weren't for the fact that no one sets out to make bad TV, we'd almost think that Doug Naylor was going meta with this one. How rubbish can an episode that lampoons criticism possibly be?

Well, contrary to the dopamine release that reviewers supposedly get from slagging something off, (cheers, Kryts) it gives us no pleasure to say that Timewave is not up to the high standard that Red Dwarf Xii has set in the last two weeks. In fact, we'd go so far as to say it's the worst since the Dave era began with Back To Earth.

The episode starts strongly enough, as Rimmer leads an...

Broadchurch series 2 spoilers: Absolutely everything we know so far
1. When is it back?

Detectives Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) will return to ITV in January 2015.

We don't know the exact date, but if we were taking a punt it would be in the second week of the year. And ITV would have to be daft not to put it on Monday nights again - it was the perfect start to the week.

2. Who is returning?

Despite Hardy's funny turns and dicky heart, David Tennant is definitely back. Despite finding out that her husband was a child murderer, Olivia Colman's slug-stomper Miller will also return.

Perhaps more surprisingly, Jodie Whittaker and Andrew Buchan are also involved in series 2. The duo played Beth and Mark Latimer, the parents of victim Danny in series one and their reappearance suggests that the second series may in some way be connected to the first - rather than a second,...

'Broadchurch' finale preview: What's in Tom's emails to Danny -- Exclusive Clip
David Tennant and Olivia Colman in Broadchurch (2013)
Tonight, the answers are revealed on the season finale of BBC America’s brilliant whodunit Broadchurch. Ten minutes before this episode premiered in the U.K., creator/writer Chris Chibnall had a TV producer’s equivalent of stage fright: “I texted Jane Featherstone, the other executive producer on the show, and said, ‘I think we’ve got it entirely wrong. I think we’ve made a terrible mistake. I think it’s an awful ending,’” he recalls, laughing. “Knowing that so many people by that point were really invested in it and watching it, I’ve never been more panicked in my life.

'Broadchurch' series two: First and last scenes already written
Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall has revealed he has completed writing the first and last scenes of series two.

The ITV 'whodunnit' crime drama will return for a second series after a successful run earlier this year.

Chibnall told The Mirror that he now knows the main plot and the finale of the second series, but that he needs to complete the rest of the story.

He said: "I've written the first scene and the last scene. So I know how it starts and how it ends. Now I just need to fill in the eight hours in between."

David Tennant and Olivia Colman played the lead roles in the ensemble drama, which is expected to begin production in 2014.

Joe Sims - who played plumber Nige Carter - reiterated recent claims that the cast still do not know if they will be returning or not.

He said: "We're all just hoping...

Broadchurch Season 2 Exclusive: Joe Sims Hopes For Nige Return
Chris Chibnall’s Broadchurch was a series that can claim to have totally gripped the nation. “Who Murdered Danny Latimer?” was the question on everyone’s lips. To call Broadchurch a phenomenon seems entirely appropriate- it was a ratings behemoth and garnered heaps of critical praise. A second series has already been commissioned and the first thrilling series is about to land on DVD here, as well as taking over America very soon.

One of the Prime Suspects was firm audience favourite Nige Carter, the well-meaning Plumber and best mate of the victim’s father. At times over-emotional and hiding a dark past even he was unaware of, Nige was portrayed by the charismatic and established performer Joe Sims.

In an exclusive interview, Sims was kind enough to discuss his approaches to acting, his varied career and his charity work with young people as well as the memorable time he...

'Broadchurch' poll: Who killed Danny Latimer? - vote now
With just one episode left until Broadchurch draws to a close, we're mere days away from finally finding out who killed young Danny Latimer - and this is your final chance to finger the chief suspect and spout your theories.

Our poll lists ten of the most likely suspects - vote below or if you've got your eye on an outsider, name Danny's murderer in the comments below.

Is creepy Nige (Joe Sims) - shopped to the cops by his own mother in the last episode - your bet? Or are you plumping for the bookies' favourite, Ellie Miller's husband Joe (Matthew Gravelle)?

Ellie's son Tom Miller (Adam Wilson) also seemed to have it out for Danny, but surely he's not the killer? Perhaps the boy's mentor - the Reverend Paul Coates (Arthur Darvill) - isn't as mild-mannered as he seems...

Could Broadchurch pull the mother of all twists and...

'Broadchurch' episode seven blog: Who killed Danny Latimer?
"We're nearly there, Miller…"

It's the penultimate episode of Broadchurch and with just one week to go until Danny's killer is revealed, one major suspect was ruled out, while an eye-witness account appeared to spell trouble for another...

Digital Spy has picked apart episode seven to see if there were any hidden clues.

Clues and Suspects

Last week, David Tennant's Alec Hardy took a turn for the worse and ends up hospitalised with a heart arrhythmia. Alec's need to redeem himself threatens to push him over the edge - will Broadchurch end with the grouchy Di's death?

Soon, jolly newspaper ed Maggie (Carolyn Pickles) and infuriating twazzock Olly (Jonathan Bailey) get wind of Hardy's poor health and he's forced to give the news hounds an exclusive - precisely what happened back at Sandbrook.

Hardy took the blame (so he claims) when a vital piece of evidence was stolen from...

'Broadchurch' episode six blog: Who killed Danny Latimer?
With the investigation into Danny Latimer's death rumbling on, Hardy and Miller's troubled investigation caught a few breaks this week on Broadchurch - with two suspects looming particularly large - but Alec's deteriorating health may have also seen the killer slip through the police's collective fingers...

Digital Spy has picked apart episode six to see if there were any hidden clues.

Clues and Suspects

Jack Marshall's death has seen Hardy (David Tennant) labelled the Worst Cop in Britain - it's not an entirely undeserved moniker given that he's yet to press Mark Latimer (Andrew Buchan) on the gaps in his alibi or noted young Tom Miller's (Adam Wilson) shifty behaviour...

With little progress made in catching Danny's killer, the coppers are threatened with cutbacks and their one remaining lead seems to be a burnt-out boat found floating in the ocean - one of many clues pointing to a new chief suspect.

'Broadchurch' episode three blog: Who killed Danny Latimer?
Depending on your point of view, last night's (March 18) Broadchurch was either a frustrating hour of TV that crawled and snoozed along or it was another sumptuous hour of slow-burn entertainment that intrigued and unravelled brilliantly.

I'm firmly in the latter camp, but I can empathise with those who are struggling with the show. Every week new layers are piled on top of new clues on top of suggestive looks and winks. After the first three hours, it feels nigh on impossible that the drama will be able to pull together all the pieces of the jigsaw by the end of episode eight.

However, I will continue to do my best to pull together the spiraling storylines and secrets into some sort of cohesive whole and get to the bottom of the burning question: who killed Danny Latimer?

Clues and Suspects

Episode three centered around Mark Latimer (Andrew Buchan) and his dirty dog ways.
