Following the prequel, “Raid 2” begins with the familiar shot of an income tax convoy moving towards its target, while the target’s vigilant informers run simultaneously with the convoy to alert their boss about the imminent raid. Although this raid at a powerful politician’s (Govind Namdev) palace does not succeed, this instant failure leads our protagonist to map and spot his ultimate target.

Bhoj, before Patnaik’s arrival, appears to be a peaceful state where everything used to be in order.

Raid 2, directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, has a predictable storyline, but it benefits from the performances of the brilliant actors on board. What such performers do is that they keep you from noticing that you are watching a mundane drama that incorporates extremely convenient plot twists. Amit Sial, as Lallan Sudheer, is just fabulous, and he literally owned the second half of the film. I don’t understand why our writers have such a hard time giving female characters some significance. I mean, the subplot involving Vaani Kapoor was just unbearable to watch, and I didn’t understand what the need was to incorporate it there. Raid 2 continues with the exploits of Indian Revenue Service Officer Amey Patnaik (Ajay Devgn) from Raid. He is now into his 75th transfer (!) for using uncompromising methods and measures to trap and punish income-tax defaulters. However, this time, there are two fresh angles: one, that in his new raid, he actually spoils his immaculate reputation and asks the defaulter (Govind Namdeo) for a two-crore bribe, and two, this time, his wife, Malini (Vaani Kapoor) also has a significant role in exposing the new villain.

The best performance in this honourable, though not outstanding, the sequel comes from that neglected grossly underrated actor Amit Sial who plays a crooked Mr. Fix-it in the income tax department: just what need in our askew bureaucratic system.

Rajkumar Gupta’s Raid 2 is not quite the rousing anti-corruption chant that we expect it to be after the 2018 revenue buster which had Sourabh Shukla as the hefty horder. Shukla keeps popping up in the sequel as well, for reasons that are not too apparent, except to perhaps taunt the hero Amay Patnaik (Devgan) each time he seems to slip up in the line of a duty, or otherwise to heckle his fellow offender, a political heavyweight named Dada Manohar Bhai, played heftily by Riteish Deshmukh.

Celebrating her brother Saqib Saleem’s 36th birthday on Monday, actress Huma Qureshi took to her Instagram stories to share a video where she is seen “annoying” the birthday boy.
