When the movies became talkies nearly 100 years ago, it all but spelled the end for the popular silent comedian. But that talent still walks among us, largely untapped. Radhika Apte, who became one of India’s first Netflix stars with titles like the series “Sacred Games” and crime comedy “Monica, O My Darling,” gets to unleash those slapstick skills in “Sister Midnight,” now opening in New York before expanding to Los Angeles and other cities. As the disgruntled newlywed Uma, Apte has hardly anyone to even talk to at the start of the film. Uma hates cleaning. She can’t cook. And her husband (Ashok Pathak) doesn’t even have the character to be disagreeable, stumbling back to their one-room Mumbai abode each night, drunk and defeated.
What begins as a satire on arranged marriage then dashes off into amusing, far-flung territories, with Uma’s gloomy disposition becoming infused with a more surreal,...

The sheer temerity of Ashwath Marimuthu’s absurd romcom Dragon in Tamil, left me nonplussed. How can any number of women be seen falling for the scoundrel hero: Raghavan cheats, bunks, defrauds, bullies, mansplains, and heckles… all this without a shred of remorse or apology?
Raghavan has been duping his parents for years, pretending to be an employed wage earner, showing up with a salary collected at month-end from his friends (with friends like these….), to show to his innocent parents.
The set-up is typically brash. Raghavan is shown to be a law unto himself. Not particularly smart or charming, he has a way with women and words—sometimes together. When his girlfriend of many years, Keerthy (Anupama Parameswaran), decides to leave him for a stable marriage, the livid (and spurned) Ragahavan rounds his fist to hit her in the face in a crowded restaurant. Years later, she reappears as Raghavan’s teacher,...

As it clocks 13 Years, Subhash K Jha revisits the espionage thriller Agent Vinod, which featured Saif Ali Khan in his slick, cool spy avatar. We also hear from director Sriram Raghavan about making the intriguing film.
Sriram Raghavan’s Agent Vinod travels all across the world to capture some of the most never-seen spots in the world, the plot, an intelligent, clever, urbane, and wry melange of Jason Bourne and James Bond, Farz, and Mission Impossible, finally finds its most assured resting-place in apana jahaan Delhi.
The last half-hour, when an international terrorist outfit attempts to blow up Delhi, has the grammar of an espionage thriller so riveting and so right that you wonder what took director Sriram Raghavan so long to get there. The plot, perched precariously on the brink of self-indulgence, never spins out of control.

nitting Revisiting the striking Badlapur, Subhash K Jha takes a look back at the drama directed by Sridhar Raghavan’s which released 10 years ago on February 20th.
“The tree remembers, the axe forgets,” reads a proverb in the opening credits of a film that left me feeling like both the tree and the axe. While the film’s pain-lashed topography in the first overture is exceptional—with every vein on Varun Dhawan’s temples ringing a bell—the second overture gets audacious, tongue-in-cheek, subversive, and sometimes downright silly. As if the tree decided to get even with the axe by cutting off its own branches.
Cast in the mould of the greatest redemptive dramas Badlapur has an ambitious ambience of unmitigated doom irrigating almost every frame. It’s as if director Sriram Raghavan and his co-writer Arijit Biswas wants to shut out all light from his protagonist Raghavan’s life.

There are not many films in the Indian film scene that have explored futuristic post-apocalyptic stories. Kalki 2898 Ad counts among the original stories in the genre, but again, this Nag Ashwin film is fantasy fiction. The short film by Dibakar Banerjee in Ghost Stories on Netflix explored the zombie apocalypse briefly. It is the first time a Malayalam filmmaker has explored the futuristic theme based in India. Gaganachari, loosely translated to ‘celestial traveler,’ is about a group of men who live in the India of the 2040s and accidentally play host to an alien and find a way to make her feel comfortable.

The times are changing across Indian cinema and Katrina Kaif, one of the top stars of the country, is changing with them.
The top 10 Indian films in the post-pandemic year 2023 were all star-driven blockbusters and Kaif was in the mix with Bollywood action extravaganza “Tiger 3,” the latest in Yash Raj Films’ spy universe, where she starred alongside Salman Khan. 2024 has seen a paradigm shift in that, with five of the top 10 films being what are known locally as “content films,” where a strong storyline takes precedence over spectacle.

Rorschach, which was released in 2022, also provided insight on how certain revenge stories can be executed. Directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas, the 2024 film tells the story of a tormented insomniac police officer who works to keep his thoughts at bay and finds himself embroiled in an interesting murder case.

In Sriram Raghavan’s latest film, Merry Christmas, a complex web of lies, a murder plot, and an unexpected love story unfolds, drawing inspiration from the pages of the French novel Le Monte-charge by Frédéric Dard. Immersing itself in shadows where humor mingles with intrigue, and drama weaves with subtle suspense, the film creates a world pulsating with hidden motives. Raghavan, renowned for his mastery of crime filmmaking, has consistently captivated audiences with his adept use of cinematic elements and technical prowess in previous works. However, in this sixth feature, the director’s storytelling rhythm appears to languish at a prolonged pace, failing to deliver the expected impact synonymous with his esteemed reputation. Despite moments of brilliance, there’s a persistent feeling that the structural choices might obscure the narrative’s full potential, leaving viewers yearning for the trademark intensity that defines his cinematic legacy. As the story progresses, it...

TikTok has officially revealed a new type of placement for its ad partners. The short-form video app will begin putting sponsored content in its search results as it continues to challenge Google‘s core business.
The search ads will come with “sponsored” tags and will be automatically toggled on for TikTok’s brand partners, according to The Verge. These placements have been in the works for months, but their final form is similar to the one that was rumored back in March. At the time, TikTok said it would display search ads as thumbnails and would use “scenery, images, voice-to-text, captions, and keywords” to determine the sponsored posts and search results that should be paired together.
