Captain America: Brave New World Sneakily Killed Off One Of Marvel's Worst Avengers
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Captain America: Brave New World."

"Captain America: Brave New World" is arguably too safe and forgettable, a sentiment that's been shared by many fans and critics since the film's release. If you're of that opinion, it's highly possible that some details have already slipped your mind, including the death of a minor character who is regarded as one of the worst members of the Avengers in the comics.

In the movie, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) turns to his trustworthy military friend, Dennis Dunphy (William Mark McCullough), to find out what's in the pills that Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) has been feeding President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) to unlock his monstrous potential. However, Sterns kills off the noble soldier before he can contact Sam and provide some answers, and the rest is history. Goodbye, Dunphy. We hardly knew thee.

Most of the time, it's sad...

Captain America: Brave New World Introduces One Of The Marvel's Lamest Avengers In A Fun Way - Spoilers
Image
Captain America: Brave New World is light on cameos but there is a deep-cut nod to the comic books that brings one of the lamest, weirdest Avengers into the MCU.

In the movie, Sam Wilson turns to Commander Dennis Dunphy, an old friend and member of the United States Armed Forces, for help figuring out what's in the pills Samuel Sterns has been giving President Ross.

It's widely believed that Amadeus Cho was once going to provide those answers, but Dunphy turns to an unnamed associate for the answers Sam needs. However, before he can warn Cap, The Leader murders him.

Does that name, Dennis Dunphy, ring any bells? It should! In the comics, Dunphy is better known as Demolition Man or D-Man, a character who first suited up in 1987's Captain America #328 after being created by Mike Carlin and Ron Wilson a couple of years earlier.

James Gunn's Favorite Superman Villains Could Redeem Shazam
Image
With the growing discussion over how Superman: Legacy will unfold, the main area of interest may just be the villain or villains of the movie. Nothing has been officially confirmed or denied, though director and DC Universe creative lead James Gunn has noted some of his favorite villains to ever vex the Man of Steel. One of these is actually connected to another DC hero's lore, and her presence may redeem said hero in question.

Shazam's use in the DC Extended Universe was somewhat contentious among audiences, namely his second movie. Thus, his next theatrical outing will likely involve a team-up. Given one villain's ties to both him and Superman, this would make a lot of sense. Here's how an appearance from Blaze could put the World's Mightiest Mortal back on the big screen.

Legion of Super-Heroes Post-Credits & Sequel Setup, Explained
Image
One of the more refreshing aspects of Legion of Super-Heroes is how Superman and Batman are kept in the background. It's something previous DC animated movies frequently didn't do, which led to saturation, especially because the two iconic heroes were also on the big screen. But in the Tomorrowverse, other characters are getting the spotlight.

Legion of Super-Heroes focuses on Kara Zor-El training in the 31st century, intent on showing Batman that she can be a hero. Admittedly, he has valid concerns because she's a liability back on Earth. But while Supergirl takes center stage, Kal-El and Bruce Wayne get a key arc. It crescendos with a shocking post-credits sequence that seemingly kills them, setting up a haunting Legion of Super-Heroes sequel.

Fantastic Four Changing Thing Could Redeem the MCU’s Sharon Carter
Image
Sharon Carter has gone from an interesting supporting character in the Captain America movies to the subject of considerable controversy among Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. The events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier revealed her as the franchise's version of The Power Broker: a surprise twist that created a number of thorny logistical and character issues in its wake. Fans continue to debate the implications -- and to be sure, Carter clearly has a big role yet to play in the franchise -- but the reveal is still considered a misstep.

Redeeming it depends very much on what happens next, and if the MCU is preparing a rabbit to pull out of its hat with Carter, then all will be forgiven. The ways it could conceivably do so are limitless, but recent casting rumors have raised an intriguing possibility. The Power Broker could be a way to introduce...

Review: Batman: The Doom that Came to Gotham
Image
The latest Warner Animated DC feature film adapts the 2000-2001 Elseworlds miniseries Batman: The Doom that Came to Gotham. The fun of the Elseworlds comics, and soon the live-action versions under the new artistic regime, is taking the familiar and imagining them in other times and other places. Here, we do back to the early 20th century and overlay it with a dose of Loftcraftian horror.

Cowritten by Mike Mignola and Richard Pace, two men better known for their artistic skills, this story was designed for visual impact, something Troy Nixey did well in print, and the animators from Jase Ricci’s script and co-directed by Sam Liu and Christopher Berkeley, replicate nicely.

Basically, an arctic expedition headed by Bruce Wayne (David Giuntoli), sent to check on a previous team led by Professor Oswald Cobblepot (William Salyers) reveals horrors and a missing professor. The only surviving is Grendon (David Dastmalchian...

DC Comics: 10 Harsh Realities of Rereading Identity Crisis
Image
For fans that return to the infamous story Identity Crisis, there are sure to be some harsh realities discovered on the reread. The DC Cinematic Universe is currently in flux and James Gunn and Peter Safran will be looking at classic narratives from the source material to potentially adapt to the big screen. Identity Crisis could be on that list, but it is far from perfect in its concept and execution. Fans might have a fond memory of initially reading the story, but a modern lens will always have the benefit of retrospect.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and the long-term impact of 2004's Identity Crisis can be measured in detail now. The story took place over a 7 issue limited run from writer Brad Meltzer, cover artist Michael Turner, penciler Rags Morales, inker Michael Bair, letterer Kep Lopez, colorist Alex Sinclair, and editor Mike Carlin. Featuring the heroes of DC's...

Mark Millar
Review: Superman: Red Son
Mark Millar
The best of DC Comics’ Elseworlds stories where when the writers challenged the conventional wisdom, upending how we envisioned our heroes. Among the more celebrated of these stories was Mark Millar and Dave Johnson’s Superman: Red Son, imagining the Kryptonian rocket ship landing in Soviet Russia, not Kansas.

It has long been on people’s wish list for adaptation as either a live-action or animated feature. Those wishes have finally been granted in one of Warner Animation’s more successful adaptations. The film is out now from Warner Home Entertainment in all the usual formats including the popular 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and Digital HD combo.

Superman (Jason Isaacs) arrives in the late 1930s and by the time his powers begin to manifest with his adolescence, we’re on the tail end of World War II and the arrival of Joseph Stalin’s (William Salyers) Iron Curtain. With a super-powered loyalist,...

Review: Reign of the Supermen
One of the smarter moves the DC Animated Universe did was begin to build interlocking storylines, characters, and voice artists. This has allowed them to build off previous events and let the status quo consistently evolve rather than feel static. (Amazing animation can do this far more easily and effectively than the film division.)

As a result, we are now emotionally invested in this incarnation of the classic heroes and villains, which allowed the redone Death of Superman film in 2018 work so well. This also paved the way for the sequel, Reign of the Supermen, which has received quite the promotional bump.

Out on home video today from Warner Home Entertainment, the 87-minute adventure rarely lets up and is more satisfying than previous installments. While it takes the name from the 1993 storylines that followed the Man of Steel’s death, it bears little resemblance. This is wholly set in the...

Review: The Death of Superman
Doomsday. The unstoppable engine of destruction also appears to be the unstoppable antagonist having been a regular in the comics since 1992 and brought to the animated and live-action films. The sheer power on display is catnip and allows DC Comics’ most powerful figure to go mano y mano.

The DC Animated Universe of direct-to-video films has been uneven, usually a result of either poor writing, bad directing, or off-putting character design. That they are now linked, building a shared universe is a small pleasure as the producers mine the comics for stories to adapt and weave into their mythos.

The Death of Superman story has been adapted repeatedly but the latest attempt, now available digitally from Warner Bros Home Entertainment, but this may be the most satisfying version. A large part of the credit has to go to writer Peter J. Tomasi, who brings a tremendous amount of humanity to...

Review: Batman Ninja
In the 1950s, Batman was transformed into a variety of beings or wore a colorful assortment of costumes to goose sales. Thankfully, that silliness was retired with the New Look and wasn’t resurrected until the Elseworlds what if stories of the 1990s. That same approach has now crept from the page to the screen with Batman Ninja, out now on DVD from Warner Home Entertainment.

This anime-style adventure comes from director Junpei Mizusaki, (producer of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), working from a script by Kazuki Nakashima and character designs from Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai). As a result, it comes with a strong pedigree for the creative approach.

Rather than a posit an ancient Japan that needed a protector styled in the form of a bat, this gonzo story actually takes the heroes and villains of Gotham City and transports them into the past. It’s weird, wild, wacky and...

First Trailer for ‘The Death of Superman’ Reveals the Latest Animated DC Adventure
One of the best crossover arcs ever to appear in comic books is the classic "The Death of Superman" which spanned nearly a year's worth of DC Comics issues in the early 1990s, thanks in part to Mike Carlin. Now while that arc was divided up into three parts--"Doomsday", "A Funeral for a Friend" and "Reign of the Supermen"--it's often the first dramatic part of the story that gets the adaptations. There was the 1994 video game The Death and Return of Superman, the 2007 Superman/Doomsday animated movie that launched the DC Universe Original Animated …...

Batman Vs. Jack the Ripper in First Gotham by Gaslight Footage
Batman (1992)
If there is one thing that is almost always certain when it comes to the world of DC, it is getting solid animated movies. With the exception of Batman: The Killing Joke, which was a rare misfire. Next up for Warner Bros. is an adaptation of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, which is an alternate universe story that sees Batman tracking down a serial killer in turn of the century Gotham City. Now, a sneak peek at the animated feature has made its way online.

The 8-minute Batman: Gotham by Gaslight preview is included on the Batman And Harley Quinn Blu-ray/DVD release, but was recently released online by YouTuber Mr. Marbles. The extended preview is a mix of select footage from the animated adaptation, mixed with interviews from producer Bruce Timm, director Mike Carlin and writer James Krieg. As it happens, Krieg really got into the spirit of things and...

Get A Sneak Peek At Batman: Gotham By Gaslight Animated Movie
Last month, we found out that Batman: Gotham by Gaslight would be the latest comic book to be turned into a DC universe animated movie. Now, we have our first look at the film courtesy of this eight-minute sneak peak that’s arrived online, after being featured on the Batman And Harley Quinn DVD/Blu-ray.

Written by Brian Augustyn with art by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, 1989’s Gotham By Gaslight is often credited as kickstarting the DC Elseworlds imprint, which produced out-of-continuity stories that gave familiar characters a fresh twist. Gaslight moves the Batman mythos to Victorian times and sees a steampunk-themed version of the Dark Knight hunt down Jack the Ripper, who’s travelled from London to Gotham.

The sneak peak gives us a glimpse at various snippets of the movie, and thankfully it looks to be one of the more visually-impressive DC animated efforts we’ve seen so far.

Review: Teen Titans: The Judas Contract
Condensing nearly eighty years of comics continuity, characters, and interpretations into other media allows for cherry-picking and revision to be done, so the resulting new work has the look and feel of the original while offering up something fresh, and hopefully, good.

One of the best-regarded storylines in DC’s history is “The Judas Contract” which was the culmination of a two year thread in New Teen Titans because no one saw the twists and turns in the storyline while it also dramatically shifted Dick Grayson’s status quo. It also provided readers with the origin of the Tiran’s great foe, Deathstroke. The ending was emotional and strong while the entire story holds up on rereading.

What is offered up in Teen Titans: The Judas Contract animated feature, out now from Warner Home Entertainment, is a pale comparison for a number of reasons. First, the lineup of characters is...

Justice League Dark Trailer Teams Batman with Constantine and Swamp Thing
Justice League Dark (2017)
Back in July, a new sneak preview from the Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders Blu-ray release confirmed that the next DC Universe Animated Original Movie will be Justice League Dark. It was also confirmed that Matt Ryan, who played John Constantine on NBC's canceled Constantine series, and guest-starred as the iconic character on Arrow, will return to voice John Constantine in this movie. Today we have the first trailer for Justice Leauge Dark, along with confirmation on even more cast members.

IGN debuted the first trailer earlier today, and confirmed that this movie will be R-rated. This animated adventure will be following in the footsteps of Batman: The Killing Joke. The movie will be rated R for "some disturbing violence," and while we learned about some of the voice cast members in July, even more cast members have now been confirmed.

Our report from July revealed that Jason O'Mara is set to voice Batman,...

Review: 'Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics'
DC Comics had grand plans for its 75th anniversary but most of them were shelved when the company evolved into DC Entertainment and the mandate was to look ahead, not back. Still, there’s the mammoth book coming from Taschen and this month we’re being treated to the documentary Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics. Narrated by next summer’s Green Lantern, Ryan Reynolds, the 90 minute feature explores the company from beginning through today but given the wealth of subject matter, at best, this is a surface study.

The documentary makes good use of archival footage from creators no longer with us and mixes them in with fresh interviews so we hear from executives, writers, artists, and many of those who built the company. Among those you will see on screen include Neal Adams, Irwin Hasen, Marv Wolfman, Mark Waid, Dan Didio, Jim Lee, Paul Levitz, Walter and Louise Simonson,...
