American comedy museum and archive the National Comedy Center has opened a new exhibit celebrating the legacy of legendary TV producer Norman Lear in civic engagement and comedy.

Lear’s life work is being honored with an online exhibit and a physical installation at the Comedy Center’s galleries in Jamestown, N.Y., both of which feature rare archival material and select excerpts from Lear’s sitcoms. His gallerist, John Marchant, confirmed his death. In a statement, he was described as an “artist, iconoclast, anarchist, punk, hippie, rebel and romantic. Jamie leaves behind a beloved daughter Rowan, a granddaughter Rose, and an enormous legacy.”

Tom Petty has been posthumously recognized by the University of Florida with an honorary Doctor of Music degree, and to celebrate, the estate of the late Heartbreakers frontman announced an endowment to the school’s music program.

Dr. Petty earned the academic distinction after Uf’s board of trustees voted unanimously in 2021 to recognize the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, who hailed from the same city that houses the university in Gainesville. His younger brother, Bruce Petty, was invited to accept the degree on his behalf at the spring commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 4th.

“I don’t think anyone in our family, including him, thought that he would be linked with the University of Florida this way,” the junior Petty shared in a statement. “It’s such a powerful thing, it was his life-long dream, and I know he would just be over-the-top, crazy happy about it.”

Funko, less than a year after acquiring high-end collectibles brand Mondo, has wound down Mondo’s current movie-poster business and let go several employees — including Mondo co-founders Mitch Putnam and Rob Jones, Variety has confirmed.

Mondo, based in Austin, Texas, was founded in 2004 and was previously a subsidiary of indie theater chain Alamo Drafthouse before Funko inked a deal to buy it last year for $14 million. Mondo had gained a strong following for its limited-edition screen-printed movie posters. Notable artists who worked with Mondo have included Olly Moss, Shepard Fairey, Ken Taylor and Kevin Tong. Sources said that Mondo’s vinyl records and collectibles businesses are intact.

In addition to Putnam and Jones, Mondo senior creative director Eric Garza also has been laid off. For now, it appears that Mondo’s poster division is defunct; however, a source familiar with the situation said Funko expects Mondo to continue producing posters going forward.

In a jam-packed 102 minutes, The New Americans aims to explain a string of recent Internet-fueled financial misadventures; to somewhat update the meditations on Internet-connected communities and online social anxiety that were part of her acclaimed 2009 film We Live in Public; and to link those things to a toxicity that culminated in the chaos of January 6, 2021.

The New Americans takes a meme-ified approach to understanding the meme-ified intersection of online culture, the financial sector and the rise of different strains of extremism. But like a Xerox of a Xerox of a Xerox, the relationship between the documentary and the information it’s attempting to elucidate becomes a blur.

The Specials frontman Terry Hall died after a battle with pancreatic cancer, according to a new Facebook post from the seminal British ska outfit’s bassist Horace Panter.

Greenwich Entertainment announced Thursday that it has picked up the rights to “Moby Doc,” a surrealist documentary from Rob Balver about the life and career of electronic music artist Moby.

Written, directed and edited by Balver, the film will be guided by narration from Moby himself as he recounts his rise from the underground punk scene to one of the most influential electronic artists ever, fighting addiction and becoming an activist for various social causes along the way. The film features interviews with David Lynch, David Bowie and Shepard Fairey, along with concert and archival footage.

“In making ‘Moby Doc,’ Rob and I had two goals,” said Moby. “The first was to make a truly unique music film and the second was to make a film that’s unabashedly honest and vulnerable.”

The artist behind Go, hit album Play and a storming cover of Mission To Burma’s That’s When I Reach For My Revolver, is to be the subject of Moby Doc from Rob Bralver.

Greenwich Entertainment has picked up the North American distribution rights to the feature doc and will release it in theaters and digital platforms on May 28.

The surrealist biographical documentary is narrated by Moby himself, a man who has appeared in numerous music docs as a talking head. He will reflect on his turbulent personal life and iconic music from underground punk bands to chart-topping solo artist, and from struggling addict to vegan activist.

Due out October 30th, the reissue pairs the 15-minute, 14-song album — released exactly 40 years ago on October 1st, 1980 — with five additional Circle Jerks songs that Keith Morris and company recorded at a rehearsal that year.
