Rainn Wilson Says ‘The Office’ Was “A Little Bit Chaotic” After Steve Carell Left
Image
Years after Steve Carell left the cast of The Office, some fans remain divided over whether the show was better or worse after his departure.

Rainn Wilson recently recalled what it was like behind the scenes of the NBC mockumentary sitcom following the exit of Carell’s foolhardy Dunder Mifflin branch manager character Michael Scott after Season 7 in 2011.

“When Steve left, then it was a little bit chaotic of trying to figure out the tone of the show and who’s the lead and, how are we telling these stories without, you know, the comic engine of the show, which is Michael Scott?” explained Wilson on the Good Guys podcast.

Noting Carell was “such a big movie star at the time,” Wilson explained the cast wasn’t surprised by his departure. “We knew it was coming for a long time,” he said.

Co-star Jenna Fischer, who played receptionist and struggling artist Pam Beesly,...

Rainn Wilson Says ‘The Office’ Was a “Struggle” Without Steve Carell: ‘We Knew it Was Coming For a Long Time’
Image
Rainn Wilson recently talked about how things changed on The Office after Steve Carell left. He was a guest on the “Good Guys” podcast with Josh Peck and Ben Soffer, and said it wasn’t easy for the cast or the crew to keep the show going after Carell’s exit in 2011. Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute for all nine seasons, said it was a tough adjustment.

“When Steve left, then it was a little bit chaotic of trying to figure out the tone of the show and who’s the lead,” he said. “How are we telling these stories without, you know, the comic engine of the show, which is Michael Scott? That was also a struggle.”

Even though it was hard, Wilson said Carell’s exit didn’t catch anyone off guard. “We knew it was coming for a long time,” he said.

Rainn Wilson Says Filming ‘The Office’ Was a Struggle After Steve Carell Left
Image
Rainn Wilson is looking back at what it was like to be part of The Office after Steve Carell left, and he’s not sugarcoating anything. During an appearance on the “Good Guys” podcast with Josh Peck and Ben Soffer, Wilson said things got pretty rough on set after their leading star said goodbye in 2011.

Wilson, who played fan-favorite Dwight Schrute for all nine seasons, said losing Carell really shook up the whole series. “When Steve left, then it was a little bit chaotic of trying to figure out the tone of the show and who’s the lead and, how are we telling these stories without, you know, the comic engine of the show, which is Michael Scott,” he said. “That was also a struggle.”

According to Wilson, Steve Carell’s exit wasn’t a surprise to anyone on set. He said the cast knew it was coming for...

10 Must-Watch Time Travel Movies If You Liked ’12 Monkeys’
Image
There’s something wild about time travel movies. One minute you’re following the story, the next you’re questioning reality and maybe even your own timeline. They can break your brain, hit you right in the feels, and leave you staring at the screen.

And if you’ve seen 12 Monkeys, you already know the feeling. It’s gritty, chaotic, a little depressing, and completely unforgettable, the kind of film that doesn’t just explore time travel, but weaponizes it. Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt, a collapsing future, and a virus that hits way too close to home? Yeah, it hits different.

But what do you watch next after something that bonkers and brilliant? Luckily, the world of time travel cinema is deep, twisted, and full of gems, whether you’re into high-concept brain puzzles, action-packed timelines, or surprisingly emotional journeys.

This list isn’t just about time machines and butterfly effects.

10 Killer Movie Robots That Are More Terrifying Than M3GAN
Image
"M3GAN" surprised audiences in 2022 with its creepy tale about an overprotective robot named M3GAN (body performed by Amie Donald and voice provided by Jenna Davis) who follows her pre-coded directives a little too closely. Packed with a few gnarly kills, clever humor, and one skin-crawling dance sequence, this Gerard Johnstone-directed production grossed a whopping $181 million at the worldwide box office against a $12 million budget.

You know what that means, right? Sequels and spinoffs are coming starting this year, though they already face an uphill battle at the box office. Do we need a "M3GAN" universe? Probably not, but there's no question this pint-sized doll captured the interest of moviegoers, no doubt already reeling from the early onset of artificial intelligence -- stay calm, we're still in the early stages of cats diving into pools.

But where does M3GAN rank in the pantheon of terrifying movie robots? She's definitely scary,...

Exclusive: Motorsports and basketball. Indianapolis has become a mecca for those activities as the home of the Indy 500 and the Pacers (who came up just short of winning the NBA crown this year). Today, Heartland Film announced the lineup for the 8th edition of Indy Shorts, running from July 22-27 in the Indiana capital. More than 250 short films of virtually every genre will be showcased, among them 41 world premieres, 18 U.S. premieres and 113 Midwest premieres.

Road House Remake Director to Reboot Iconic Stephen King Story (WIth 1 Big Change)
Image
After reimagining Road House, filmmaker Doug Liman is set to reboot the Stephen King story The Stand. The tale has already spawned two TV series adaptations in the past, but Liman will be making a big change with this version, as it would be a singular feature film.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Liman is attached to direct a feature film adaptation of The Stand for Paramount Pictures. Tyler Hompson of Cross Creek Pictures is also serving as a producer on the project. Currently, a screenwriter hasn't been named, but with the change in format, they may have their work cut out for them with this adaptation.

The lengthy novel has provided plenty of source material for its TV series adaptations, and it may be a challenge to effectively tell the story with the same impact condensed into one movie. According to the report, Liman's vision is for a one-off story,...

7 Movies to Watch if You Liked ‘Echo Valley’ on Apple TV+
Image
Directed by Michael Pearce (Beast), Echo Valley (2025) is a brooding psychological thriller that unfolds in the eerie quiet of rural Pennsylvania. At its heart is Julianne Moore as Kate Garretson — a grieving widow clinging to her crumbling horse farm and haunted by the emotional wreckage of her past. When her estranged daughter Claire (Sydney Sweeney) arrives with a suspicious tale of accidental murder, Kate is drawn into a spiral of deception, violence, and maternal desperation. With standout performances from Domhnall Gleeson and Fiona Shaw, the film explores themes of grief, addiction, motherhood, and moral compromise. It’s a slow-burn thriller where trauma simmers beneath every scene, culminating in a suspenseful finale that raises questions about forgiveness and letting go.

If you’re looking for movies like Echo Valley — stories steeped in maternal turmoil, isolation, and morally grey decision-making — here are 7 powerful films that echo (pun intended) its dark emotional landscape.

Ridley Scott's New Movie Is Dethroned on Streaming by Apple's Sci-Fi Series With 97% on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
There's a new No. 2 on Apple TV+. Echo Valley, the new Ridley Scott-produced thriller starring Sydney Sweeney and Julianne Moore, has been kicked to third place by the new sci-fi series Murderbot.

Per FlixPatrol, Murderbot has jumped up three spots on Apple TV+'s Top 10 Overall list to No. 2, knocking Echo Valley down one spot to No. 3. However, Murderbot was unable to dethrone the reigning champion, Stick, the new Owen Wilson sports comedy series about a washed-up pro who turns to a young gifted golfer to turn his life around, which is holding onto that No. 1 spot. Of course, Echo Valley is still No. 1 when it comes to just movies on Apple TV+, while Stick and Murderbot are No. 1 and No. 2 for TV shows.

Murderbot is based on Martha Wells' The Murderbot Diaries, with the first season adapting All Systems Red, the 2017 novella that kicked off the sci-fi series.

‘Dragonfly’ Review: Andrea Riseborough and Brenda Blethyn Dazzle in a Bleak British Shocker
Image
It’s always risky to mix genres, but some movies pull off the trick with more skill than others. Dragonfly, which had its world premiere this week in Tribeca, starts as an intimate character drama, with two Oscar-nominated British actresses — Brenda Blethyn and Andrea Riseborough — at the top of their game. (They were given a joint acting award by one of the juries at the festival.) Paul Andrew Williams’ movie unfolds at a fairly leisurely but rewarding pace until an event occurs that unhinges one of the characters and turns the movie closer to the horror genre, with a blood-splattered finale. Reactions will surely be mixed about this surprise tonal shift, but there is no doubt that the film sticks in the memory.

Blethyn plays Elsie, an elderly woman living in a drab housing complex and tended to by caregivers who do the bare minimum to meet her needs. Her...

Sydney Sweeney’s Divisive 51% Rotten Tomatoes Thriller Smashes Streaming Expectations
Image
Echo Valley may have underwhelmed critics, but it's overperforming where it counts — on screens. The tense Apple TV+ thriller, which stars Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney, has landed in the number one spot on the platform’s charts, smashing streaming expectations and proving once again that Sweeney's drawing power is no fluke.

Directed by Michael Pearce (Beast) and penned by Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby, Echo Valley explores the dangerous lengths a mother will go to for her child — even when that child shows up on her doorstep with a body in the car.

Set on an isolated horse ranch, Echo Valley centers on Kate Garretson (Moore), a grieving widow who lives a quiet life tending to her land and missing her late wife. That peace is shattered when her troubled daughter Claire (Sweeney), a recovering addict, arrives covered in someone else’s blood and begging for help.

Despite Instant Streaming Success, Ridley Scott's New Thriller Fails to Impress on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Ridley Scott is a critically acclaimed filmmaker who has received three Academy Award nominations for his directorial skills, including one for 2000's Gladiator. However, aside from writing and directing, he has also produced many projects.

One of them is Apple TV+'s recent release, the Sydney Sweeney-led thriller Echo Valley. The thriller debuted at the top of the charts instantly after its release on streaming on June 13. However, even if the film has all the ingredients to become a streaming hit, Echo Valley failed to impress the critics and the audience on Rotten Tomatoes.

From the critics, Echo Valley received a 50% approval score, which comes with a "rotten" badge. The audience gave the mystery a positive score but just barely, holding a 61% rating, which is just above the positive threshold at 60% on the Popcornmeter.

Reeling Reviews' Laura Clifford gave Echo Valley a positive score, highlighting that the Ridley Scott-produced...

Echo Valley (2025) Movie Ending Explained: Has Claire Truly Returned — or Is She Just a Ghost from Kate’s Past?
Image
Directed by Michael Pearce, Apple TV’s “Echo Valley” (2025) is an evasively incoherent thriller. Swinging between heavy melodrama and palatable twists, the film is rescued and exalted by a fantastically engaged Julianne Moore. Although billed as the second lead, Sydney Sweeney has less to do than Domhnall Gleeson and Fiona Shaw, both of whom bolster Moore’s riveting turn. “Echo Valley” puts a grieving widow to come to terms with her doting mother nature, while traversing the world of psychotic drug dealers and dead bodies.

Echo Valley (2025) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

Kate Garretson (Julianne Moore) is recovering from the death of her wife, Patty. When you are grieving, every day is a struggle. The only relief for Kate is Patty’s old messages and the farm they owned together. The horses, their dog ‘Coop,’ and the acres of open land remain as fond reminders. Sydney Sweeney's 'Echo Valley' Gets Put Out to Pasture on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Sydney Sweeney might be a savvy business person who knows how to sell soap, but don't forget that she's an award-winning actress, too. Euphoria, The White Lotus, and Immaculate have all proven that she's here to stay, but unfortunately they can't all be winners, as is the case with her new Apple TV+ thriller, Echo Valley. Premiering today, the film landed with a thud on Rotten Tomatoes, earning just a 53% rating from critics.

"Feels like a spec script influenced by twisty thrillers from the 80s and 90s that ticked multiple commercial boxes and integrated outrageous twists and turns," said Peter Martin from DallasFilmNow.com. Jeannette Catsoulis from the New York Times also wasn't impressed, adding that "the most relatable being onscreen is the family dog, whose baffled expression at one point I am certain mirrored my own." Al Alexander from Movies Thru the Spectrum had some more harsh words for Echo Valley,...

Echo Valley
Image
British director Michael Pearce has twice proven himself a sophisticated, surprising crafter of thrillers, having previously helmed Jessie Buckley’s sinister breakthrough feature Beast in 2017 and Riz Ahmed’s sci-fi piece Encounter in 2021_._ With Echo Valley, Pearce continues his run of eliciting excellent performances from top actors. This time, he tackles the story of grief-stricken Kate and the malign influence of mendacious drug-addict daughter Claire (Sydney Sweeney) when she returns to the family farm in rural Pennsylvania after a short period of estrangement.

Kate — skint because she can’t face teaching horse-riding, some six months after the death of her wife Patty — is already having trouble paying for a new barn roof when Claire arrives asking for more money. Even Kate’s ex-husband Richard (Kyle MacLachlan) has been dragged in to help with their financial situation. It’s a smart start: laying the groundwork for a high-grade addiction drama, before switching gears.

Sydney Sweeney's New Thriller From 'Mare of Easttown's Writer Hits a Rough Patch on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
On the surface, Echo Valley feels like an unexpected move for Sydney Sweeney at this stage in her career. The young star broke out with HBO's Euphoria, and rode a massive wave of popularity all the way to the global box office success of Anyone But You, her 2023 romantic comedy also featuring Glen Powell. She did the obvious thing by signing onto a superhero movie next, but that didn't quite work out for her. The movie in question, Madame Web, tanked miserably with both critics and audiences. Before she returns with the long-awaited third season of Euphoria, she can be seen in the Apple TV+ thriller Echo Valley, which is set for a release this Friday, but with lukewarm reviews under its belt.

Echo Valley currently holds a so-so 53% Rotten Tomatoes score, with most critics pointing out its illogical narrative and indecisive script. In his review, Collider's Jeff Ewing...

Guy Ritchie’s New Adventure-Hunting Mystery Is a Global Streaming Hit Despite Abysmal Rotten Tomatoes Scores
Image
Guy Ritchie will always be known for his work on classic crime thrillers like Sherlock Holmes and The Gentlemen, but earlier this year, he released a new film that’s climbing streaming charts. Ritchie stepped behind the camera to direct Fountain of Youth, the globetrotting mystery adventure film following two siblings and their journey to reconnect as they search for the Fountain of Youth. Despite releasing nearly three weeks ago, receiving poor scores of 36% from critics and 40% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, Fountain of Youth has found continued streaming success. The film is streaming on Apple TV+, and it’s the #1 most popular movie on the platform in 98 countries as of yesterday. Despite its star-studded cast, Fountain of Youth did not premiere in theaters and was released straight to streaming.

Some Apple movies in the past, like Napoleon and Argylle, have been released in theaters before they premiered on the streamer,...

Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney team up for dark new thriller
Image
‘Echo Valley’ follows a mother forced to act after her daughter shows up covered in blood.

I love a great thriller with a good hook — and a daughter showing up in the middle of the night covered in someone else’s blood? Yeah, that’s a solid start. That’s the setup for “Echo Valley,” a tense new movie on Apple TV+ that stars Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney as a fractured mother-daughter pair whose relationship gets pushed to the brink. Here’s everything you need to know to watch “Echo Valley” when it drops on Friday, June 13 on Apple TV+.

Sydney Sweeney has played complex before, but Echo Valley is on a whole different level. From the moment Claire shows up at her mother’s horse ranch in a panic, Echo Valley spirals into a brutal emotional chess match. Her mother, Kate (Julianne Moore), is still grieving the loss of her wife and desperate to keep what little family she has left. Sydney Sweeney's New Apple TV Mystery Thriller Debuts With Middling Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Sydney Sweeney has had one of the fastest-growing careers of any actor over the last decade. A big part of that is thanks to HBO, who propped up her career with roles in both Euphoria and The White Lotus. These shows ended up seeing the actor being nominated for two Emmys within the same year, helping catapult her career forward. While her character was only in The White Lotus season 1, she will return to her role of Cassie in Euphoria season 3, which is expected to premiere next year.

Since skyrocketing into fame with these parts, Sweeney has been diversifying her career. At the end of 2023, she made a foray into the movie rom-com universe with her performance in the box-office hit Anyone But You. She followed this up with performances in the religious horror movie Immaculate and the Marvel film Madame Web. Sweeney is slated to have another big year...

Echo Valley review – Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney suspense thriller stretches credulity
Brad Ingelsby
A mother and her drug-abusing daughter are entangled in a far-fetched crime plot involving scary dealers and hastily disposed bodies

Brad Ingelsby, creator of TV’s Mare of Easttown, has written an enticing-looking suspense thriller which Michael Pearce directs and Ridley Scott co-produces. And with the acting A-team of Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney in the leads, and rock-solid support from Fiona Shaw and Domhnall Gleeson, things look promising. But Sweeney is absent from the drama for too long for the central relationship to be satisfyingly dramatised. And after an intriguing opening, the convoluted narrative doesn’t merely jump the shark but lies down and lets the shark jump over it before the pair of them charleston their way across the rolling Pennsylvanian farmland where the film is supposed to be set.

Moore plays Kate, a lonely and unhappy grieving woman who trains horses and gives riding lessons on the farm she now precariously owns.

“A massive mistake”: Domhnall Gleeson Follows Steve Carell in ‘The Office’ Spinoff That Inspires Hope
Image
Domhnall Gleeson is stepping into new comedic territory with The Paper, a fresh mockumentary series from The Office creator Greg Daniels. The show had already sparked comparisons to its iconic predecessor. Gleeson, however, is approaching the role with his own spin, and with some words of wisdom from familiar faces.

While The Paper carries the DNA of The Office, it’s far from a reboot. Instead, it promises something entirely new. Despite the connection, Gleeson urges fans not to expect a reboot of the iconic NBC sitcom. In the spirit of Steve Carell, who refused to imitate Ricky Gervais’ David Brent when The Office was adapted for an American audience, Gleeson is now taking a similar path.

Echo Valley Review — A Gripping Thriller of Moral Ambiguity
Image
As someone with a particular appreciation for intimate, morally ambiguous thrillers, my expectations for Echo Valley were naturally high. The presence of an acclaimed actress like Julianne Moore (The Room Next Door), paired with the rising talent of Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria), was already enough to pique my interest, but it was actually the name Michael Pearce, director of the underrated and overlooked Encounter, that sealed my positive anticipation. Add to that a screenplay by Brad Ingelsby (The Way Back), and the ingredients were there.

Echo Valley tells the story of Kate (Moore), a mother marked by loss, living in isolation on a horse ranch. Her quietly troubled life is upended by the unexpected return of her daughter Claire (Sweeney), who’s involved in a dangerous drug-related scheme. As past and present collide, Kate is forced to confront just how far she’s willing to go to protect the one she...

The Office Star Jenna Fischer Was Cast As Pam Beesly Thanks To One Word
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

More than a decade removed from its series finale, it feels fair to say that "The Office" is one of the most beloved TV shows of all time. Right up there with the likes of "Cheers" and "Friends," the tale of the Dunder Mifflin paper company and the employees who make that seemingly normal company run has etched its place in the annals of television history. Anyone who was on that show has, in turn, achieved some level of immortality, including key players like the receptionist Pam Beesly, as played by Jenna Fischer.

Pam was, of course, a life-changing role for Fischer, who has since parlayed the show's popularity into a very successful podcast called "Office Ladies." Even more incredible, it appears that Fischer landing the role really came down to one word during her audition. During an appearance on...

Echo Valley Review: Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney lead the new thriller from the creator of Mare of Easttown
Image
Plot: Kate is a mother struggling to make peace with her troubled daughter Claire — a situation that becomes even more perilous when Claire shows up on Kate’s doorstep, hysterical and covered in someone else’s blood. As Kate pieces together the shocking truth of what happened, she learns just how far a mother will go to try to save her child in this gripping tale of love, sacrifice, and survival.

Review: Between the two of them, Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney have starred in twelve films since 2023. While Moore has garnered Oscars and Emmys through her acclaimed career, Sweeney is at the start of hers. The two actors bring a lot to Echo Valley, an intense thriller from writer Brad Inglesby and producer Ridley Scott. With Sweeney riding high on the success of Immaculate and Moore on the buzzworthy Netflix series Sirens, both deliver some of their best recent work in this film.

'The Office' Reboot Star Says It's Wrong to Compare His Character With Michael Scott
Image
Domhnall Gleeson is preparing himself for one of his most important roles to date. The Harry Potter and Ex-Machina actor is set to play the lead in the upcoming The Office reboot/spin-off, The Paper, exclusively premiering on Peacock this September. While it's inevitable to try and find some of the Dunder Mifflin magic in everything that has come after the NBC series, Gleeson considers it a "massive mistake" to make his character compete with those previously portrayed by Steve Carell and Ricky Gervais.

Gleeson spoke to People magazine during the premiere of his new film co-starring Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney, Echo Valley. The conversation quickly segued into the actor's upcoming TV endeavor, the reboot created by Greg Daniels, who was also the showrunner of the U.S. version of The Office. Not much is known about the spin-off except that it follows the personnel working at a struggling Ohio newspaper,...

‘Echo Valley’ Review: Michael Pearce’s Rushed and Schematic Psychological Thriller
Image
Michael Pearce’s Echo Valley, as written by Brad Ingelsby, tries to bring together a host of interlocking narratives, and to limited success. At the center of the story is a fraught mother-daughter relationship that could itself have been enough to sustain the film. Kate (Julianne Moore) is a widow who can’t see past the fog of her grief over losing her wife to take care of herself or the horse farm she once ran with her ex-husband, Richard (Kyle MacLachlan). Her daughter, Claire (Sydney Sweeney), is a long-term addict and chaos generator who seems to only show up when she needs money or a place to crash.

The script creates a potentially engaging dynamic by tangling his characters in a chain of co-dependency. We see Kate visiting Richard, a wealthy lawyer exasperated by his ex’s neediness, to ask for money to keep up the farm. After admonishing...

Echo Valley (2025) Movie Review: An Intriguing Ethical Thriller Undone by Implausibility
Image
“Echo Valley” (2025) is a competently shot, well-acted thriller that presents an intriguing ethical conundrum, but stumbles in its attempt to address it. At its core, the film presents a simple question about the lengths that parents would go for their children, and whether unfettered affection is always the best course of action. Despite some handsome visuals and a sincere attempt to examine issues like domestic violence and addiction, “Echo Valley” isn’t quite twisty enough to be an edgy mystery, and not focused enough to be a legitimate drama.

“Echo Valley” follows the horse trainer Kate Garrett (Julianne Moore), who has remained relatively secluded in the wake of a personal tragedy. Kate has struggled to pay the bills required to maintain her land, and while she seeks assistance from her wealthy ex-husband (Kyle MacLachlan), it’s made clear to her that no one is willing to invest in her future.

Echo Valley Review: Moore Shines in a Flawed Thriller
Image
In the quiet corners of rural Pennsylvania, Kate Garretson’s life operates on a loop of loss. Portrayed by Julianne Moore, Kate moves through her days on a sprawling horse ranch that feels less like a home and more like a monument to her late wife, Patty. Each morning is a ritual of grief, a holding pattern defined by financial pressures and a palpable sadness that hangs in the air. This initial state of stillness establishes a baseline of sorrow, setting a stage where any disruption feels seismic.

The disruption arrives in the form of her daughter, Claire. Sydney Sweeney brings a jittery, desperate energy to the role, a young woman whose history with addiction has already worn deep grooves into her relationship with her mother. But this is no ordinary visit. Claire’s late-night arrival, frantic and spattered with blood, brings with it a horrifying problem: a dead body in her car.

‘Echo Valley’ Review: Killer Duo Julianne Moore and Syndey Sweeney Test the Limits of a Mother’s Unconditional Love
Image
For anyone craving some classic Julianne Moore energy, director Michael Pearce’s “Echo Valley” feels like a throwback to the fierce copper-coifed star’s early career. Before “Short Cuts” and “Boogie Nights” and a well-deserved Oscar win, Moore played the duly suspicious snoop in “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.” That early-’90s thriller may have been a potboiler, but Moore stole the show, sinking her teeth into every overripe line of dialogue (e.g. “A woman can feel like a failure if she doesn’t bring in 50 grand a year and still make time for blowjobs and homemade lasagna”).

In the well-cast if frequenlly illogical offering from Apple TV+, Moore slyly elevates what could have been a routine protective-mama drama. As Kate Garretson, a rural Pennsylvania farm owner who’ll stop at nothing to safeguard her heroin-addicted daughter Claire (Sydney Sweeney), Moore is as committed a parent as they...

‘Echo Valley’ Review: Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney Elevate an Otherwise Generic Crime Thriller
Image
If movies have taught us anything it’s that if someone asks you to dispose of a dead body, you say “no.” In fact, movies have taught us this valuable lesson so many times and for so many decades that I’m genuinely shocked when anyone — even in movies — still thinks it’s a smart idea in a dead body situation. There are only two possibilities why this plot point would still be so prevalent: 1. People actually do it in real life all the time (which is a creepy thought) or 2. People generally want the plot of a movie to, you know, happen … so you can’t have everybody doing the smart thing and resolving all their problems halfway through.

“Echo Valley” is the latest in a long line of crime movies where someone gets involved in a dead body situation and makes the snap decision to dispose of the thing.

‘The Paper’ Star Domhnall Gleeson Reveals His Boss Is Nothing Like ‘The Office’s Michael Scott
Image
The Paper star Domhnall Gleeson is setting the record straight when it comes to the kind of character he’ll be playing in The Office spinoff. The actor spoke candidly to People about his new TV gig and made it clear that drawing comparisons between The Paper, which is officially set to debut on Peacock this fall, and the former NBC comedy isn’t necessarily the right thing to do. “I don’t think my character’s like Michael Scott at all,” Gleeson revealed. As viewers will recall, Steve Carell played Michael Scott, the manager of Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton, Pennsylvania branch, and he was known for being a bit of a personality. “I think if you’re trying to compete with what Steve did or with what Ricky Gervais did, I think it would be a massive mistake,” Gleeson iterated, referring to both Carell’s character and the first...

‘Echo Valley’ Review: Julianne Moore And Sydney Sweeney Are Dynamite In Nail-Biting, Riveting Thriller
Image
Pair stars like Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney, add BAFTA-winning director Michael Pearce and a top screenwriter of, among others, the Emmy-winning Mare of Easttown in Brad Ingelsby and major producers including Ridley Scott and it is not a surprise that they have collectively cooked up one barnburner of a thriller. And the “barnburner” part you can take literally.

It is called Echo Valley and will begin streaming on Apple TV+ on June 13, but this could do well in theaters (it supposedly will play in a select few). Nevertheless, it is gripping stuff no matter how you find it.

Moore, in fine form, plays Kate, divorced and now estranged from her ex-husband Richard and grieving the loss of her wife, also has to deal with an on-and-off relationship with volatile daughter Claire (Sydney Sweeney), who is running with the wrong crowd and hopelessly addicted to drugs.

‘Echo Valley’ Review: Sydney Sweeney and Julianne Moore Star in a Mother-Daughter Murder Story That’s Luridly Entertaining Until It Loses Focus
Image
The most beautiful and dangerous thing about parent-child relationships is that they’re always changing, even as the love that holds them in place never does.

It’s beautiful, of course, that newly widowed horse mom Kate (Julianne Moore) would still do anything for her precious Claire, even though the once-adoring little girl has matured into a shrieky, manipulative drug addict who now sees her mom as a hindrance to scoring heroin. The danger there, as we see over the course of Michael Pearce’s luridly enjoyable “Echo Valley,” is that doing “anything” for her full-grown junkie daughter requires a very different kind of commitment from Kate than it did when Claire was a kid. Back in the day it probably just meant buying her a pony for their farm. Now it means dumping her boyfriend’s dead body in the nearest lake so that Claire won’t go to...

The Star of ‘The Paper’ Says Competing With Carell or Gervais’ ‘The Office’ Is a “Massive Mistake”
Image
The documentation of dying industries, as seen in the 2005 NBC comedy The Office, continues with The Paper. The upcoming series, created by The Office showrunner Greg Daniels, carries the same beats as the massively popular Steve Carell-led series. The Paper is made in the same documentary style as its predecessor featured and details a dying Midwestern newspaper. Domhnall Gleeson was cast in the lead role as the newspaper's boss. This has instigated comparisons to the old boss, Michael Scott, played by Carell. Gleeson thinks this comparison is unwarranted since the characters are not even remotely the same person. “I don't think my characters like Michael Scott at alI,” he told People. The boss has been played by various actors in different versions of The Office, including the UK version, which inspired the 2005 American remake. Domhnall explained how these comparisons are misplaced, saying:

“I think if you're trying to compete...

‘Fountain of Youth’ Review: A Muddled Quest
Image
John Krasinski, Domhnall Gleeson and Natalie Portman in ‘Fountain of Youth’ (Photo Credit: Apple TV+)

Despite a big-name cast, Guy Ritchie’s latest action-adventure, Fountain of Youth, is a surprisingly shallow experience. The film tries for a fun, witty vibe but misses the mark entirely, coming off as a watered-down version of far better treasure-hunt movies. At its best, it’s a sort of National Treasure-lite, but those brief moments don’t come close to justifying the two-hour runtime, which feels like a real grind.

Four-time Emmy nominee John Krasinski’s normally able to lift average material, but not in this case. Oscar winner Natalie Portman also doesn’t inject anything special into the globe-trotting adventure. The fight scenes feel generic, and the stunts give off a serious “been there, done that” vibe. And Fountain of Youth‘s fantastical setups, while expected to be outlandish in this genre, are just...

The 10 Worst HBO Miniseries, Ranked
Image
There are few institutions in the world of American audiovisual entertainment more reliable than the HBO miniseries. For the past four decades, the premium cable network that become synonymous with high-production, high-quality television at the turn of the 21st century has been exercising particularly dutiful creative control when it comes to its short, one-season-only offerings; in some ways, those shows stand as even more direct and representative "HBO responses to auteur cinema" than even the network's proper made-for-tv movies.

Still, in all those years, there have been some duds — including both co-productions between HBO and British networks and all-American concoctions. As evidenced by the number of miniseries that rank among the best HBO shows, the channel has a truly impressive track record in the miniseries department, such that even No. 10 on this list isn't completely unwatchable or anything. But, as you move further down this list, you will find that...
