Long running BBC quiz show A Question Of Sport has been axed after more than five decades on the air.

The BBC have confirmed that A Question Of Sport has ceased production after fifty three years on the air.

It began in 1970, with David Vine as host, and although the show was not on screens for two years in the 1970s, it had remained in continuous production since 1978.

A Question Of Sport really took off under the stewardship of David Coleman in the 1980s – the 1989 episode featuring Princess Anne as one of the guests got a whopping nineteen million viewers.

Former tennis player Sue Barker then hosted the show for 24 years, before being replaced by Paddy McGuinness in 2021. This was also when the show underwent a significant revamp, with non-sporting celebrities being invited to appear as guests, transforming the show into more of a light entertainment programme.

Sue Barker has said she “regrets” the manner in which her 24 years of hosting A Question Of Sport came to an end.

The former professional tennis player and broadcaster presented the sports quiz show from 1997 to 2021.

In September 2020, it was announced that Barker would be leaving the programme, with Paddy McGuinness later announced as her replacement. Team captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell also left alongside her and were replaced by Sam Quek and Ugo Monye.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast on Friday (30 September), Barker suggested that while the BBC had wanted her to say her departure was her own choice, she was instead replaced as part of a “refresh”.

“It is such a shame because, I have to say, that the BBC had told us we were going,” Barker said.

“They wanted to refresh the programme and that is absolutely fine. Everyone has the right to do that. We don’t own the programme.

Sue Barker has spoken out about her departure from A Question of Sport, claiming that she found the BBC’s handling of the situation “insulting”.

The popular broadcaster and former tennis player was the host of the sports trivia programme from 1997 until 2021. In September 2020, it was announced that she and team captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell would be leaving the programme.

Now titled Question of Sport, the show is currently presented by Paddy McGuinness, with team captains Sam Quek and Ugo Monye.

Barker will soon release an autobiography in which she discusses her life and career, including a declaration that she wishes she’d never “gone near” Cliff Richard, whom she dated in the 1980s.

She also reveals her feelings towards her departure from the show, after being told that the broadcaster was going in an alternative direction.

Thom Evans is the fourth star to sign up for Strictly Come Dancing 2014.

The athlete will follow in the footsteps of fellow rugby stars Austin Healey, Ben Cohen, Matt Dawson and Gavin Henson by joining the BBC competition.

He is the first male contestant to sign up for this year's series, following the announcements of Saturdays star Frankie Bridge, Judy Murray and Alison Hammond.

"I'm so happy to be doing the show, I cannot wait to get started," Evans said. "I'm really looking forward to my Strictly makeover – bring on Strictly and bring on the spandex!"

Evans retired from rugby at the age of 24 after suffering a serious neck injury. He is also known for his past relationship with model Kelly Brook, and has since dated actress Jessica Lowndes.

Strictly Come Dancing star Ben Cohen has revealed that he is fully prepared to flash his flesh on the BBC One reality show.

The rugby international said that he was in "no doubt" that he'd end up taking his top off at some point during the series.

"Yes, I will strip," said Cohen. However, the sports star insisted that he didn't consider himself a sex symbol.

"I think we should pin that one on Ash [Taylor Dawson]. He's younger than me."

Cohen has spoken with former Strictly rugby stars Matt Dawson and Austin Healey about the show, who warned him about the amount of time and effort required for the show.

Producers hope the 2003 World Cup winner will be a heartthrob for viewers during the upcoming edition of the dance competition, according to the Sunday Mirror.

The 34-year-old retired from the sport in 2011 and created the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation to tackle bullying.

Channel 5 has announced a new series which will search for the country's best family of home cooks. Real Food Family Cook Off will be hosted by former Celebrity Masterchef winners Lisa Faulkner and Matt Dawson. Funded by Tesco, the show will also be broadcast on the Good Food channel. Each episode will see two teams made up of three family members go head to head. Taking part in two cook-offs in each episode, the teams will have just 30 minutes to prepare and plate up their chosen recipes. Matthew Cutler and Lilya Kopylova have quit BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, after a huge shake up of the reality TV show.

The pair had been dropped from the main line up and were told they would not be partnering celebrities this year. Instead they were offered a place on a dance troupe, who would undertake weekly performances and be paid only by the dance. They followed in the footsteps of Brian Fortuna who quit last month and turned the offer down.

Speaking about his departure, Cutler said: “I’ve absolutely loved my time on Strictly, and now is a good time to focus on developing new areas of my career. I’m excited about having more time to commit to new projects, and of course, still having a hand in Strictly without all the training!”

Button – patron of the Make-a-Wish Foundation UK – met a young man with a brain tumor for the organization last week. Shaun – who suffers from Craniopharyngioma – has been a huge fan of the driver since his early days, and got the chance to meet his hero through the amazing work of the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Shaun was taken by limousine to the headquarters of the Brawn Gp Team in Northamptonshire and given a private viewing of a Brawn Gp car – a rare privilege for any member of the public. He was also introduced to BBC F1 presenter Jake Humphrey and ex-England Rugby Union player Matt Dawson.
