Football Fanatics, Nuclear Waste, and Elon Musk’s Phallic Martian Fever Dreams at Visions du Réel 2025
Image
One thing I like to do at a film festival is go for a run. Maintaining the sense of a bubble at these things can be crucial: once entered, it’s best to remain in its unusual hold or risk forgetting why you’re there in the first place. But find yourself with a loose half-hour or so and it’s nice to get a sense of the surrounding area. For obvious reasons, many of the best festivals take place in locations where the wealthy like to go, meaning: they are usually low on population and easy on the eye, both of which are the casual runner’s dream. Jog a mile inland from the town of Nyon, where the Visions du Réel documentary festival takes place each spring, and you’ll likely end up alone amidst rolling screensaver-ready fields of Swiss farmland. Head the other way and you’ll...

Syrian-French Director Anas Khalaf Unveils Post-Bashar Al-Assad Feel-Good Tennis Drama ‘Love-45’ With Laetitia Dosch & Charif Ghattas – Qumra
Image
Exclusive: Anas Khalaf and Rana Kazkaz’s Mare Nostrum and The Translator count among the rare fiction works made by Syrian directors tackling the 2011 democracy protests and President Bashar al-Assad’s brutal 14-year campaign to crush them.

The husband-and-wife team’s allegorical short film Mare Nostrum (2020) tapped into the resulting Mediterranean Sea migrant crisis as people fled the conflict, with Ziad Bakri playing a harrowed father who inexplicably throws his young daughter into the sea.

Political thriller The Translator (2020) explored the early days of the revolution and the decades of oppression that preceded it, through the tale of a political refugee living in Australia who returns to Syria in search of his brother after he is arrested by the authorities for protesting.

Khalaf is now in the late stages of development on Beirut and Bekaa Valley-set tennis-themed fiction feature Love-45, which he has been presenting to potential production and sales...

Behind Amazon MGM’s Jen Salke Ouster and Its Fallout
Image
On May 14 of last year, Amazon MGM Studios chief Jennifer Salke took the stage at Pier 36 in New York City, looking to convince advertisers that Amazon was playing to win in Hollywood.

“Welcome to the next hundred years of Amazon MGM Studios,” Salke said to those gathered in the cavernous event space, which also featured piles of cash guarded by besuited security guards to promote Mr. Beast’s Beast Games, and a Road House cabana bar.

What followed was a cavalcade of stars, meant to underscore that Amazon was committed to the business. Will Ferrell, Roger Federer, Jake Gyllenhaal, Aldis Hodge, Alicia Keys, Patton Oswalt, Keke Palmer, Alan Ritchson, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham and Reese Witherspoon were among those that joined Salke on the stage.

In the entertainment business, of course, commitment is never permanent. Salke successfully sold Amazon’s ambitions to Madison Avenue, but less than a year later Amazon executive Mike Hopkins,...

Savannah Guthrie, Craig Melvin Prepare for New Morning Scramble at NBC’s ‘Today’
Image
When “Today” starts up Monday morning, NBC executives and producers hope that it will look like any other broadcast of the long-running A.M. show.

Of course, it won’t. Yes, Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin will greet viewers, no doubt, with the top news of the day. Yet while Melvin has been a regular presence on the program, Monday marks his first appearance in the co-anchor role previously held by Hoda Kotb. The expectation is that viewers won’t blink much of an eye.

“People kind of know and expect what we give them every day,” says Melvin, during an interview last week. “We would be silly to tinker with that too much.”

Melvin takes the role while “Today” is enjoying a new bout of momentum. To be sure, traditional audiences for most linear TV programs, including venerable, decades-old morning shows, are in secular decline, but “Today” has shown some interesting vigor.

‘2073’ Movie Ending Explained & Full Story: What Happens To Ghost?
Image
Ideally, the name of Asif Kapadia should be enough to get you to watch anything. The man has cemented his place when it comes to documentary filmmaking already—mainly due to the trilogy of Senna (2010), Amy (2015), and Diego (2019), all of which should be considered pinnacles of the genre. Kapadia’s last work about tennis legend Roger Federer’s final days was quite weak in comparison, but that’s no reason to not get excited about his latest—especially when he’s making a La Jetee (1962)-inspired futuristic docudrama. That’s new territory for the filmmaker, by the way, and on paper, 2073 does sound like quite the thing. Sadly, though, the final execution is a mess. Never have I ever thought I would have to check my watch while watching something made by Asif Kapadia, but that’s exactly what happened here. Anyway, the point of the article is to give...

“I didn’t want that always coming up”: From Playboy Model to Tommy Lee Scandals, Pamela Anderson Wanted to Run Away From Her Past
Image
After becoming one of the most frequent cover models for Playboy in the late 1980s, Pamela Anderson soon found her footing in showbiz, as her stint on Baywatch made her one of the biggest sex symbols of the ’90s. However, this contributed to the actress being typecast into roles that demanded sex appeal, and in the long run, it took a toll on her.

Her situation was aggravated after the scandal involving her then-husband Tommy Lee surfaced, and for a long time, the actress tried to run away from her past, which she finally came to terms with in recent years.

Absolution Review — Liam Neeson’s Latest Action-Thriller Switches it Up
Image
As 72 years old, Liam Neeson continues to be a force in the world of cheap action thrillers. Every so often, he has a bit of a hit, something that breaks free of the generic formula and continues to prove why the septuagenarian continues to be a force. Absolution is one of those films that turns Neeson’s action proclivities and age into a solid film about looking back on your regrets.

Absolution Review

Directed by Hans Petter Moland from a script by Tony Gayton, Absolution follows Neeson as a drunk, deadbeat father desperately trying to reconnect with his family, who doesn’t want much of anything to do with him. We punch through sustained moments of reflection with a few bursts of action. It’s a strong balance of somber drama and thrills.

Our protagonist is unnamed, simply taking on the moniker of “Thug.” He’s the same type of...

LeBron James NBA Docuseries ‘Starting 5’ Is a Mediocre Ode to Excellence: TV Review
Image
In the fourth episode of “Starting 5,” the Netflix docuseries tracking the 2023-2024 season of the National Basketball Association through a handful of star players, LeBron James lets off some post-game steam by teasing his wife, Savannah. “Stop!” she says, laughing. “We’re on camera!”

“That’s my camera,” James replies. The subtext is clear: Nothing will make the final cut if he doesn’t want it to.

James’ production company, Uninterrupted, is the primary backer of “Starting 5,” which juxtaposes the guiding light of the Los Angeles Lakers with four colleague-rivals: Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat, Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics, Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Domantas Sabonis of the Sacramento Kings. For the 10-episode season, Uninterrupted partnered with two other outfits associated with public figures: Omaha Productions, the shingle of ex-NFL quarterback Peyton Manning, and Higher Ground, the Hollywood venture of Barack and Michelle Obama.

Maren Morris Makes Huge Career Move

Maren Morris announced in September 2023 that she was leaving country music after feuding with Jason Aldean’s wife and Morgan Wallen fans. She ultimately backed off the declaration, but the “My Church” singer did go outside her comfort zone with a new career milestone.

Streamers Want Celebrity Docs, but There’s a Problem: ‘Who Hasn’t Had a Documentary?’
Image
When Imagine Documentaries president Sara Bernstein pitched New York Post gossip columnist Cindy Adams on making a film about her career, even the veteran journalist didn’t understand why Bernstein was interested. “What do you want to make a doc about me for?” Adams asked the “Jim Henson: Idea Man” producer. “Everybody has a documentary. My dentist has a documentary!”

Good line — and she must have a great dentist.

An incomplete list of this year’s celebrity docs includes Simone Biles, Celine Dion, Steve Martin, Roger Federer, Stevie van Zandt, Brian Eno, Frida Kahlo, Devo, Christopher Reeve, Sue Bird, Andrea Bocelli, Elton John, Martha Stewart, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Paul Anka, Pharrell Williams, and Bruce Springsteen.

The appetite seems nearly endless, but producers say it’s increasingly difficult to find famous people whose lives haven’t flashed before our eyes. Said Bernstein, “The challenge today is, who hasn’t had a documentary?...

Darnell Appling: How Zendaya's Assistant Became The Umpire In Challengers "It Was Totally Unexpected"
Image
Darnell Appling's surprising role in Challengers was a total coincidence, showcasing his unique voice and style as the umpire. Zendaya's influence helped land Appling the part, leading to a standout performance that impressed the director. Appling's future in acting may be bright after his successful film debut, as he then appeared in a shoe commercial with Zendaya and Roger Federer.

Zendaya's assistant, Darnell Appling, makes a surprise appearance in Challengers, and it was a total coincidence that he got the part. One of the best drama movies of 2024, Challengers is Luca Guadagnino's eighth film and another excellent entry in the director's quickly growing canon of movies. Like many of Guadagnino's films, Challengers is a sexy, titillating, deeply intimate movie. British Royal Family: All The Outfits Kate Middleton Has Worn To Wimbledon Over The Years – Is There Symbolism In Her Style?
Image
It’s no secret that Kate Middleton has a distinct style and impeccable taste in clothes. Everyone always wants to know what she will wear to Wimbledon each year.

Kate Middleton Stuns Royal Fans With Her Fashionable Ensembles

Since 2011, Kate Middleton has stunned royal fans with her fashionable ensembles. She has attended Wimbledon every year, with the omission of 2013, when she was pregnant with Prince George. Her signature style initially was long, flowing white dresses, and she gradually started wearing vivid colors.

In 2011, the Princess made her first Wimbledon appearance as a royal family member. She opted for a flirty, tennis-inspired sleeveless white Moraiah dress by Temperley London to watch Andy Murray play Richard Gasquet.

White is a simple color, and it can also suggest neutrality. It could signify no favoritism toward a specific team or player at sporting events. Her dress was also very playful and fun. Hence, she...

‘Federer: Twelve Final Days’ Explained: Why Did Roger Federer Retire?
Image
A Roger Federer documentary directed by Asif Kapadia seems like something that can’t go wrong in any way. Federer: Twelve Final Days centers upon the climax of the tennis legend’s career. Kapadia co-directs it, along with video producer Joe Sabia. In this very personal documentary, the camera follows Federer right from the moment when he’s about to officially call it a day, to his final professional match in the Laver Cup. Kapadia is a master when it comes to sports documentaries, but this one doesn’t quite pack the punch of “Sena” or “Diego Maradona.” But it’s still very much watchable, thanks to the man himself. Let’s take a closer look at it.

What Happens in the Documentary?

Is there a name bigger than Roger Federer in the game of tennis? Probably not. Inarguably the greatest player of our time (maybe ever), Federer is a...

‘Federer: Twelve Final Days’ Review: A Partial Backstage Pass to the Tennis Great’s Retirement Party
Image
In his classic 1994 essay “How Tracy Austin Broke My Heart,” David Foster Wallace pondered why so many athlete memoirs — and tennis player memoirs in particular — fail to provide sports fans with what they really want to know. What does it feel like to fail in front of millions of people? How does a human being handle such intense pressure? What actually goes through one’s mind in those do-or-die moments where the difference between eternal glory and lifelong disappointment is one tiny miscalculation or half-second’s hesitation? Maybe, Wallace eventually concludes, the answer to that last question is “nothing much at all,” and “the real secret behind top athletes’ genius may be as esoteric and obvious and dull and profound as silence itself.”

In his two previous sports documentaries, “Senna” and “Diego Maradona,” filmmaker Asif Kapadia has gone a great distance toward disproving Wallace’s thesis, using ingeniously edited archival...

Federer: Twelve Final Days
Image
The last two years have seen the inexorable winding up of an era in men’s tennis that we will likely never see again. Dominated by the ‘Big Three’ of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic (Four with Britain’s Andy Murray), sheer charisma and distinct personalities brought a gladiatorial edge that transcended the sport. And as we watched them grow from callow boys, to men, to husbands/fathers — while seemingly rarely missing a shot — fans grew to love them with a quite unprecedented passion, perhaps none more so than Swiss superstar Federer.

Federer: Twelve Final Days is the latest documentary from Asif Kapadia — here co-directing with 73 Questions host/creator Joe Sabia, for Amazon Studios — who did such magnificent work in unpicking the tragic deaths of Formula 1’s Ayrton Senna and singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse. Here the pair detail the last 12 days of Federer’s storied career — 24-plus years as a pro,...

Asif Kapadia on Roger Federer film: ‘Athletes die twice’
Asif Kapadia
Asif Kapadia has co-directed 12 Final Days with Joe Sabia, a highly-anticipated look at tennis legend Roger Federer’s retirement.

A great piece has popped up at Variety, charting the behind the scenes story of how acclaimed documentary maker Asif Kapadia became involved with the soon to release 12 Final Days. Kapadia is no stranger to making brilliant documentaries focused upon the careers and lives of sporting legends (see Senna and Diego Maradona) but as the piece explains, he came onto this project when Sabia was already deep into post-production.

The film releases next week on Amazon Prime Video here in the UK and given Federer’s enduring popularity as a tennis icon, we’d imagine that there’ll be no shortage of viewers waiting to see it. Given that Luca Guadagnino’s brilliant tennis drama, Challengers is now available to watch at home as well, might we humbly recommend what might...

Asif Kapadia on Co-Directing Roger Federer Documentary ‘Twelve Final Days’: ‘It Felt Different to Anything I’ve Done Before’
Image
Producer Joe Sabia first encountered tennis legend Roger Federer in 2019 for Vogue’s “73 Questions” series. Sabia enjoyed the interview and kept in touch with his team. Three years later, as Federer looked to retire from the sport as a professional player, Sabia was brought into his offices. Federer was planning to officially announce the news via his Instagram page with an audio message accompanying the post. His team pondered if Federer’s retirement should be filmed.

But Sabia responded, “Yes,” believing “it’d be a mistake not to.’”

As conversations went back and forth, the idea was that the video would be stripped back, private, under the radar, and like Federer himself, effortless. So, Sabia used two cameras, and the idea was to shoot an 8 to 12-minute film. “If Roger doesn’t want anyone to see it, I’m completely fine doing this, knowing that it’s going to be just for friends and family,...

Federer: Twelve Final Days Review - Sports Documentary Is More Sentimental Eulogy Than Exciting Drama
Image
Designed for die-hard Federer fans, this emotional documentary lacks suspense or depth for a wide audience craving more substance. Focusing on Federer's retirement, the film misses the opportunity for genuine drama or controversy, opting instead for a sentimental eulogy. While Federer's final moments on court are poignant, the documentary's lack of unscripted jeopardy makes it a flat tribute to an iconic career.

It's often said that familiarity breeds contempt. However, in the case of the hagiographic documentary, Federer: Twelve Final Days, it seems like the reverse is true. A movie made for uber-fans of the legendary Swiss tennis maestro, the film offers some emotional catharsis and interesting insight into the athlete and his inner circle. For everyone else, however, the earnest yet lightweight documentary will leave them yearning for something with a bit more bite.

‘Federer: Twelve Final Days’ Review: Roger Federer Bids Farewell to Tennis in a Heartfelt if Dull Amazon Doc
Image
When it comes to the Big Three who have dominated men’s tennis for the past two decades, I’ve always favored Roger Federer over rivals Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Federer’s game had a multi-surface brilliance and beauty that rarely got obscured by anything extraneous — off-court drama, on-court excesses. You could marvel at the reliable wizardry of a Federer performance and just assume that, in his utterly wholesome boringness, he wouldn’t let you down as a person either.

And that’s the furthest thing from an insult. Roger Federer always presented as a completely decent person and a miraculous tennis player.

So when I call Asif Kapadia and Joe Sabia’s Federer: Twelve Final Days, a new documentary premiering at Tribeca ahead of its Amazon airing, comfortably dull, that’s another way of saying that it’s probably precisely the documentary that Federer would have wanted made about himself.

Federer: Twelve Final Days review – teary-eyed portrayal of a legend’s last stand
Asif Kapadia
Asif Kapadia co-directs backstage access to a tennis great’s final games that includes much crying but too few questions

The tears of Roger Federer, along with the tears of Rafael Nadal and even the tears of Novak Djokovic, are what finally give some point to what is otherwise a pretty bland, officially sanctioned corporate promo for the Federer brand. This documentary for Amazon Prime – co-directed by Asif Kapadia and video content producer Joe Sabia – has behind-the-scenes access, following the final 12 days in the top-flight tennis career of the legendary champion, from his announcement of retirement in 2022 to his emotional curtain-call appearance at the Laver Cup in London, named after Rod Laver, the starry new Europe-versus-the World team tournament that Federer has done so much to develop.

Federer was bowing out with style like the class act he’s always been and as legends such as Björn Borg, John McEnroe,...
