Cph: Dox, Copenhagen’s International Documentary Festival, has set the full lineup for its 2024 edition, including 84 world premieres, 32 international premieres, and 9 European premieres.

Running March 13-24, the festival will feature six competition categories: Dox: Award, F: Act Award, Nordic: Dox Award, Next: Wave Award, New: Vision Award, and the new Human: Rights Award.

Musician Pete Doherty will attend the festival for a screening of Peter Doherty: Stranger in My Own Skin. The event will take place on March 18 at Bremen Theater, when he and the film’s director Katia de Vidas – who became Doherty’s wife over the ten years she followed him with her camera – openly discuss the substance abuse that has shadowed his entire career. After the screening, Doherty will give an acoustic concert. Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival has unveiled the full programme for its 2024 edition, including seven films about the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.

The titles include the world premiere of Tal Barda’s I Shall Not Hate in the new Human Rights Competition, in which Nobel Prize-nominated Palestinian author and doctor Izzeldin Abuelaish continues to work for peace despite the loss of his three daughters in an Israeli attack on Gaza.

Also spotlighting the conflict are world premieres of Larissa Sansour and Soren Lind’s UK-Palestine co-production Familiar Phantoms and Jonathan Schaller and Philipp Schaeffer’s Silent Night, both in the New:Vision strand.

As Spinal Tap’s David St Hubbins once argued, it is possible to have too much perspective; but perhaps there isn’t quite enough perspective in this documentary about the iconic rock star and songwriter Pete Doherty (who in the title goes by the more mature “Peter”), former frontman of the Libertines and Babyshambles. The film is directed by Doherty’s wife Katia DeVidas, although the actual story of their relationship or any of Doherty’s previous relationships does not feature here; of course, it could be that Doherty and DeVidas understandably reject the tabloid prurience associated with that whole subject. “Hesitation Wound” and “Hollywoodgate” were named winners at the Zurich Film Festival, as the 19th edition of the Swiss festival came to a close.

Selman Nacar’s drama “Hesitation Wound” impressed the Feature Film Competition jury.

“Moral issues are a frequent underlying theme in many films, but the dilemma facing the main character in this film is really strongly felt here,” argued the jury, which comprised president Anton Corbijn, Finola Dwyer, Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, Juho Kuosmanen and Bryce Nielsen.

Praising “wonderful” Tülin Özen, cast as a lawyer struggling at home and at work – “a woman forever on the verge of either breakthrough or breakdown,” wrote Variety – they added: “It’s a film that stayed with the majority of the jury throughout the festival and even though it was a fight with two other contenders, it became our favorite. Selman Nacar, thank you so much for this delicious film.”

The first time Katia deVidas filmed Peter Doherty was in November 2006, at a Babyshambles concert in Paris. Over the next decade, deVidas would record more than 200 hours of footage of the musician — who ushered in a new era of British rock in the early 2000s as the co-frontman of the Libertines — capturing him at his best amid floods of creativity, but also at his worst as he tumbled further into drug addiction.

As the two grew closer, forging a friendship that would eventually turn into love, deVidas realized she had an incredible story to tell. That footage became “Peter Doherty: Stranger in My Own Skin,” a raw and brutally honest portrait of an artist and addict, which premieres Friday night at the Zurich Film Festival.

“I knew that Peter had a life that was really out of the ordinary. It was a very intense, discombobulated world — so rich, so interesting.

Sound Unseen, the music documentary festival held in Minneapolis, is returning with a slew of rock docs including Alison Ellwood’s Cyndi Lauper film Let the Canary Sing and the North American premiere of Peter Doherty: Stranger In My Own Skin about the Libertines co-founder.

The 24th iteration of the festival runs between November 8-12.

Let The Canary Sing will open the festival on Wednesday November 8 and Katia de Vidas’s Doherty film closes the festival on Sunday November 12.

The programme for Doclisboa’23 is now known; the festival will take place between 19 and 29 October at the usual venues: Culturgest, Cinema São Jorge, Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema and Cinema Ideal. In all, the 21st edition of Doclisboa is showing 250 films from 42 countries, including 35 world premieres and 39 Portuguese films. The films reveal the pulse of the world and those who inhabit it.

Doclisboa travels to the inside of the human brain through the lens of Werner Herzog (Theater of Thought), and to the pressing issues of work in The Liberated Broom, Listen to the Story I Was Told, by Coline Grando; delves into memories of past wars and to the current war in Ukraine; film archives; music; and dance.

The Portuguese festival showcases documentaries from around the world.

The 21st edition of DocLisboa will open with Wang Bing’s Man In Black, and will close with Baan from Portuguese director Leonor Teles.

Man In Black premiered at Cannes and Baan made its debut at Locarno earlier this year.

The festival will take place in Lisbon from October 19-29.

UK music artist Peter Doherty will be a special guest of the 19th Zurich Film Festival in September, accompanying the world premiere of bio-doc Peter Doherty: Stranger in My Own Skin.

The film will play in Zff’s Sounds section celebrating relationship between film and music.

“The film Peter Doherty: Stranger In My Own Skin is a twofold minor sensation. Firstly, the Zff gets to present it to the public as a world premiere,” said Zff Artistic Director Christian Jungen. “Secondly, the protagonist Peter Doherty will present the film in person.”

The bio-doc chronicles the English rock star who, after reaching the pinnacle of his career, sinks into the depths of a serious drug addiction.

The intimate portrait was shot by director and musician Katia deVidas, who followed the wild life of The Libertines frontman at close quarters for over the course of a decade and is now the artist’s wife.

A documentary about musician Pete Doherty will have its world premiere at this year’s Zurich Film Festival in the Sounds section.

Described as “an intimate film portrait of his scandalous rockstar life,” “Peter Doherty — Stranger in My Own Skin” is helmed by Doherty’s wife, Katia deVidas. Doherty will present the film in-person, and also perform live following the documentary’s screening.

Pete Doherty made a rare TV appearance on Channel 4 comedy talk show The Last Leg on Friday night (24 February).

The Libertines frontman, 43, performed The Pogues’ 1985 classic “Dirty Old Town”, changing the one of the lyrics to “brudne stare misto”, which is Ukrainian for “dirty old town”.

At the end of the song, he smiled and shouted “slava Ukraini!”, meaning “glory to Ukraine”.

Friday was the one-year anniversary of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. The number of Ukrainian civilians killed in the war with Russia could be as high as 100,000, with both sides suffering tens of thousands of military casualties.

Millions of Ukrainians have either been displaced or left homeless 12 months on since Russian tanks rolled across the border.

During Doherty’s appearance on the show, he also told an anecdote about hosting two Russian artists at his London home.

Pete Doherty is releasing a documentary chronicling the addiction issues he experienced at the height of his fame.

The 90-minute film, Peter Doherty: Stranger In My Own Skin, comes from more than 200 hours of footage filmed over a 10-year period by his partner, the director-musician Katia deVidas.

Launching at the Cannes event Mipcom, the documentary will explore the former Libertines frontman’s addictions to heroin, crack cocaine and ketamine.

Doherty said: “The talent is the man and comes from the man and comes from the artist and doesn’t come from the drugs, and has never come from the drugs.

“Part of the fun and the challenge of creating is to create in spite of circumstances, so, in spite of being a drug addict, or in spite of being clean. I will create.”

DeVidas said: “The camera captures souls, looks, truths – mostly lost ones, along with intense moments of the sort that are usually hidden.

Les Arcs Film Festival has unveiled the 15-title lineup of its Work-in-Progress session, the popular industry sidebar whose alumni roster include Vladimar Jóhannsson’s “Lamb,” Lukas Dhont’s “Girl” and Nora Fingscheidt’s “System Crasher.”

The section, curated by Frederic Boyer, the artistic director of Tribeca and Les Arcs Film Festival, will include “Opponent,” a drama by Swedish up-and-comer Milad Alami (“The Charmer”) and produced by Sweden’s Tangy and Norway’s Ape&Bjørn; “Preparations for a Miracle,” directed by Tobias Nölle and produced by Switzerland’s Hugofilm Features and Germany’s Flare Film; and “Silver Haze,” helmed by Sacha Polak and produced by Dutch banner Viking Film and the U.K.’s Emu Films.

Warner Bros. is releasing a new 40th Anniversary Blu-ray Edition of Stanely Kubrick's classic film A Clockwork Orange on May 31st. This movie was made back in 1971, and it's so insane that to this day people that see it for the first time are still shocked by what they are seeing. On May 31st, Warner Home Video releases a special edition of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange on Blu-ray to commemorate the film's 40th Anniversary. It's a big year for anniversaries for classic films, but this has got to be one of the best (sorry The Ten Commandments and Ben Hur). Along with the Blu-ray release, Malcolm McDowell will be doing a tour of sorts, kicking off with a screening of the film at the Cannes Film festival, followed by a screening and panel discussion at the New York Museum of Modern Art, and then closing with a special presentation at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
