The sitcom is based on the life story of Ms. Pat, as told in her memoir “Rabbit: The Autobiography of Ms. Pat,” as she transforms from a convicted felon and drug dealer from Atlanta into a suburban mother. Series regulars Williams, J. Bernard Calloway, Tami Roman, Vince Swann, Briyana Guadalupe, Theodore John Barnes and Brittany Inge are set to return for Season 5.

Production on Season 5 of “The Ms. Pat Show” will commence in February 2025. A premiere date for the new season has yet to be determined, but Season 4 of the sitcom debuted in May 2024.

Deadline revealed Williams was expanding her relationship with BET in 2022 by signing a multi-year overall deal under which she would produce and perform in new series and other projects across BET. Her first project under the deal was the unscripted courtroom series Ms. Pat Settles It, which premiered its second season in July.

A new musical written by Anna Deavere Smith and featuring music from the Ella Fitzgerald songbook is currently in development. Ella: An American Miracle will receive an Aug. 25-Sept. 21 work session, with Tony-winner Dee Dee Bridgewater and Charity Angél Dawson portraying the iconic singer at different points in her life.

The work session will conclude with a private industry presentation. A production timeline was not disclosed.

“Composers wanted Ella Fitzgerald to sing their songs because listening to her, they knew how their songs were supposed to be sung,” said Smith in a statement. “A jazz singer, a scat singer, she also famously both sang and defined the American song book. To say she had humble beginnings is a profound understatement. She sang America through some of its most discordant times. She was America’s love song. She was an American miracle.”

The real-life struggles that The Ms. Pat Show draws its material from seem more ripe for a gritty, sobering drama than broad, punchline-driven comedy.

Poverty. Drug addiction. Childhood abuse. A criminal past. It doesn’t exactly scream out laugh-a-minute.

But its star, Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams, long ago found that using comedy to plow through life’s pain was the key to her success. Not only has her approach resulted in a sitcom that’s a fledgling hit on BET+, it has transformed her as well: “Comedy has healed me so much.”

Unlike most sitcoms, this one is firmly anchored around the stand-up comic’s unlikely rise from society’s margins to attain the American dream. In real life and on TV, Ms. Pat is no stereotypical TV mom. Think Roseanne of the 1980s and 1990s, but even rawer. The show, which kicked off its second season Aug.

Ms. Pat is coming back. Streamer BET+ announced Thursday that the familial comedy The Ms. Pat Show has been renewed for a Season 2.

According to the Oscar-nominated director, the comedy’s creative team “went through the wringer trying to bring this to light.” For Daniels, bringing Ms. Pat’s humor and memoir to screen was a “no-brainer.” However, momentum slowed when trying to find a home for the series. The series was initially set up at Fox with a different writer during the 2016-17 season, then moved to Hulu in fall 2019 and eventually landed at BET+ in 2020.

The multi-cam sitcom based on the stand up comedy and memoir of Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams has landed a series order at BET Plus, Variety has learned exclusively.

The series was originally set up at Hulu last year with a pilot order. Now, BET Plus has given it a 10-episode order.

Williams stars as a fictionalized version of herself, a former convicted felon turned suburban mom whose hustle and resilient spirit were forged on the streets of Atlanta. To much reserve, she now finds herself in conservative middle America alongside her well-intentioned husband (J. Bernard Calloway), a struggle of a sister (Tami Roman), and two distinct sets of kids raised under very different circumstances.

Natasha Lyonne, Garrett Hedlund and Trevante Rhodes are set to join the cast of Lee Daniels’ biopic on the life of Billie Holliday starring Andra Day, it was announced Tuesday.

“The United States vs. Billie Holliday” will be Daniels’ next film, and it will go into production early next month in Montreal.

The movie follows the legendary jazz musician and singer Holliday as she’s being targeted by the Federal Department of Narcotics in an undercover sting operation led by federal agent Jimmy Fletcher, with whom she had a tumultuous affair. Inspired by her life story, “The United States vs. Billie Holliday” examines Holliday’s struggles with addiction, fame and heartbreaking love.

Encores Artistic Director Jack Viertel today announced the creative teams for New York City Center's 2016 Encores season. J. Broadway's Memphis, winner of four Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book and Best Orchestrations, comes to Thirteen's Great Performances Friday, February 24 at 9 p.m. on PBS check local listings. Featuring the original Broadway cast, including Tony nominees Chad Kimball and Montego Glover, as well as Derrick Baskin, J. Bernard Calloway, James Monroe Iglehart, Michael McGrath and Cass Morgan. Memphis is the historic first Best Musical Tony Award winner to air on U.S. national television with its original principals while simultaneously continuing a successful Broadway run and national tour.

Chicago – Sometimes high energy and spirited charisma are enough to redeem a mediocre musical, and that is precisely what “Memphis” has in spades. It’s not a wholly derivative show by any means, but it does tread through familiar troubled waters. Modern Broadway classics like “Hairspray” have already effectively illustrated that “Rock ’n’ roll is just Negro blues sped up.”

That memorable line is delivered late in “Memphis” by Felicia Ferrell (Montego Glover), a black club singer who becomes a singing sensation once she’s discovered by a smitten white DJ, Huey Calhoun (Chad Kimball), a character loosely based on Dewey Phillips. Racial tensions dissolve as music proves to be a uniting force. Yet while still under the threat of attacks in the ’50s-era South, Huey and Felicia must decide whether to stay put or make the move to the Big Apple.

Live productions of the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis, will be filmed in the coming weeks, for a planned nationwide theatrical run in this spring.

Recall, last spring, I posted an entry announcing that the musical had drawn Hollywood’s interest – specifically, Justin Timberlake was said to be interested in adapting the musical to film, likely as a starring vehicle for himself; and director Oliver Stone, a big fan of the show, had been meeting and talking with David Bryan, one of the show’s creators and its composer, expressing his interest in making a film out of it.

But neither of those two potentials are connected to the theatrical distribution of live recordings, planned for this spring.
