Poland’s U.S. in Progress Event Pitches Itself as ‘Perfect Matchmaker’ for American, Polish Filmmakers
Image
Not long ago, an award-winning Polish composer who’d scored dozens of films approached Ula Śniegowska about U.S. in Progress, an industry event conceived as a bridge between the Polish and American markets that runs parallel to the American Film Festival in Wrocław, Poland.

“He approached me saying, ‘I’ve done enough in the Polish market. I need an introduction to the international market. Can you, as U.S. in Progress, help me?’” Śniegowska recalls. “It seems we are a perfect matchmaker for those types of companies to have their work exposed in the U.S.”

Celebrating its 13th edition, U.S. in Progress was launched as a showcase for emerging independent American filmmakers. Each year, the event presents a curated selection of American indie titles in the final stages of production to European sales agents, distributors and festival programmers. This year’s edition takes place Nov. 8 – 10.

In the Dark Creator Teases a 'Pretty Perfect' Series Finale, Despite Last-Minute Cancellation — Get a First Look
Image
The CW’s In the Dark — despite learning that Season 4 would be its farewell run just weeks ahead of the premiere — will give loyal fans a “satisfying” send-off, says series creator Corinne Kingsbury.

Over the drama series’ first three seasons, Murphy Mason (played by Perry Mattfeld) went from lazy receptionist to drunken vigilante detective, drug front proprietor and a woman-on-the-run. In The Dark Season 4 Episode 7 Review: C.I. Was Right
Morgan Krantz
Oh, In the Dark, you're guaranteed to provide us with utter madness and chaos.

On an exciting note, Morgan Krantz took a spin in the director's chair for In The Dark Season 4 Episode 7, directing his first installment of the series, and it's so much fun when an actor does that.

They know the characters in a particular way and get to translate that through their direction. You can typically notice a person's distinctive style, too. I love that Krantz had that opportunity and did so well.

But back to the absolute bonkers action that happened throughout this installment.

We still don't know why Darnell is at the level of pissed he was at Murphy other than "because... plot."

For most of the installment, we were stuck with Great Value Darnell, who bitched and moaned after Gene and Sarah's parent-trapped him and Murphy into working with one another.

He nitpicked the whole time,...

8 Sex Positive Short Films That Exude Sensuality, Kink, and Body Positivity
Image
As film festivals pivot to the ever-shifting landscape of distribution and sales, the way we consume independent film is changing more dramatically than anyone could have predicted. Audiences can now experience a wider variety of films online, opening a world of possibilities that will hopefully benefit smaller films. With any luck, the new reality will broaden movie lovers’ horizons enough to include short films, which U.S. audiences can be reluctant to embrace. Most filmmakers begin to craft their voices with shorts, and given the significance of making a strong first impression, the format encourages creative risks. What’s more, younger and emerging filmmakers naturally have a finger on the pulse of more progressive ideas, ensuring a broader range of perspectives.

While mainstream Hollywood struggles to address human sexuality in any meaningful way, these four recently-released short films explore sex and desire with a refreshing playfulness. Whether it’s a...

SXSW Free Short Film Streaming Event #SupporttheShorts Returns
Image
Oscilloscope Laboratories will team up with Mailchimp again this year for the free streaming event #SupportTheShorts, showcasing a variety of short films from the SXSW Film Festival on the streaming platform Mailchimp Presents. The Support the Shorts initiative was launched last year when SXSW was canceled because of the pandemic, causing short filmmakers to miss out on having their work seen by such a large audience.

While SXSW returned this year with an online event, the decision was made to continue with Support the Shorts to keep many of the event's short films in the spotlight. The short film event also will come with a new set of awards to recognize the titles that will be playing for free for people all around the world to see.

Oscilloscope Laboratories To Showcase SXSW Short Films With Return Of #SupportTheShorts Streaming Event
Image
Oscilloscope Laboratories is teaming with Mailchimp once again for #SupportTheShorts, a free streaming event featuring a selection of short films from the SXSW Film Festival on the global streaming platform Mailchimp Presents.

#SupportTheShorts launched last year when SXSW was canceled due to Covid-19 and hundreds of short filmmakers lost the opportunity for their work to be seen. To remedy this, Mailchimp partnered with Oscilloscope to give these short films and their creators a digital home where their work could be enjoyed from anywhere.

This year’s online edition of SXSW brings back the platform for filmmakers to showcase their art at the festival and to a broader audience. In addition to the film licensing, Mailchimp and Oscilloscope supplied hundreds of SXSW festival badges to 18 organizations committed to boosting opportunities for underrepresented communities in the film industry.

‘I Blame Society’ Review: Funny, Cruel Portrait of the Artist as a Budding Psychopath
Image
The first death occurs about midway through “I Blame Society,” Gillian Wallace Horvat’s very mean-spirited and very funny feature debut. After the deed, Horvat, who also stars (as a sociopathically dedicated filmmaker called Gillian Wallace Horvat) stares at her tear-streaked reflection in the ugly light of her bathroom mirror, and confesses to the GoPro strapped to her head that it has “precipitated a very drastic tone change” in her film.

To that point, she’s been shooting a relatively light-hearted if deeply self-involved documentary, riffing chirpily on the “compliment” some friends once paid her that she would make a pretty good murderer. Sure enough, the second half of “I Blame Society” skews ever bleaker and nastier as the body count climbs: Aside from all its other virtues, this film is a truly inspiring example of committing to the bit.

On its surface, it’s a bit we’ve seen before.

‘I Blame Society’ Review: Hollywood Wishes It Could Make Films as Original as This Biting Satire
Gillian Wallace Horvat at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, January 2020
Genuine compliments are in short supply in Hollywood, so it’s easy to understand why struggling filmmaker Gillian (Gillian Wallace Horvat) can’t shake the ones she does receive — even the strange ones that might creep other people out, like that she’d “make a good murderer.” Gillian is so taken with this little piece of praise — and that she considers it praise is perhaps the first thing you need to know about her — that she opts to turn it into the driving force behind her next project, a mockumentary following her exploits to become a (fake) murderer in a town built almost entirely on artifice. What follows is that sees Horvat gamely tackling everything from bad pitch meetings to true crime obsessions and the corrosive power of creativity, all in one original package.

Strapped for work and eager for someone (anyone) to understand her ideas, Gillian can’t forget...

I Blame Society Review: Hilarious Mockumentary Plots the Perfect Murder
Are the qualities of a successful filmmaker the same as those that make a prolific serial killer? Both certainly demand meticulous planning and precision. In I Blame Society, star-writer-director Gillian Wallace Horvat posits that maybe both roles also require a degree of sociopathy. This hilarious mockumentary features Wallace Horvat (playing a homicidal version of herself) setting out to test a friend’s “compliment” — that she would make a good murderer — by shooting a doc on how to commit the perfect murder.

Wallace Horvat’s first target in I Blame Society is the sexist LA film industry and its clueless gatekeepers. Her Gillian is a filmmaker who has been struggling to get work and financing for years despite plenty of experience and qualifications. Her downward spiral is triggered by two instances of rejection that act as the straws to break the camel’s back. First, her manager casually dismisses a feature...

Watch: Hilarious Sex Comedy Short 'Squeegee' Made by Morgan Krantz
Morgan Krantz
Love, lust, and social distance. Squeegee is a comedy short made by La-based filmmaker Morgan Krantz. A high-powered female executive has an erotic rendezvous with a high-rise window-washer on opposite sides of her office window. Inspired by Krantz's chance meeting with an actual Scottish window washer who he then cast in the film as, uh, himself. "Funny and poignant, Squeegee is an apt portrait of intimacy in the time of social distancing." This stars Amy Rutherford and Blair McKenzie. Featuring a superb score by Emmy-winning composer Ali Helnwein. This short is hilarious!! You'll laugh and giggle and blush. The performances themselves are what make it so good, the quirky mannerisms from each of them. And the old timey romantic score tops it off in just the perfect way. Another must watch short. Thanks to Adam for the tip on this short. Brief description from YouTube: "A high-powered female executive...

In the Dark: Season Three; CW Renewal Issued Ahead of Second Season Debut
There's good news tonight. The CW has given an early third season renewal to the network's In the Dark TV series. The show was renewed for a second season back in May 2019, while the first season was still airing. There's no word on when season two will see the light of day but a summer run seems likely.

A comedy-drama, In the Dark stars Perry Mattfeld, Rich Sommer, Brooke Markham, Casey Deidrick, Keston John, Morgan Krantz, Thamela Mpumlwana, Derek Webster, and Kathleen York. The story follows a hard-drinking and smoking blind woman, Murphy Mason (Mattfield). When she stumbles upon the body of a drug-dealing kid, Tyson (Mpumlwana), who once saved her from a mugger, Dean Riley (Sommer) and the other cops find her drunken account less than convincing and nobody in sight. Frustrated and heart-broken, Murphy, her guide dog,...

The CW Renews ‘All American,’ ‘The 100,’ ‘In the Dark’ and ‘Roswell, New Mexico’
The CW has announced a flurry of renewals.

Three of the network’s freshman shows, “All American,” “Roswell, New Mexico” and “In The Dark,” will return for second seasons, as well as “The 100,” which gets a seventh outing. The sixth season of “The 100” is set to premiere on April 30, and will see the characters descending to a new planet after being frozen in stasis pods on a spaceship for decades, after escaping an uninhabitable Earth.

“The 100,” originally inspired by the young adult novels by Kass Morgan, is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios with executive producers Jason Rothenberg and Leslie Morgenstein. It stars Eliza Taylor, Paige Turco,...

The CW's In the Dark: Grade It!
In the Dark‘s Murphy Mason isn’t your typical CW heroine: She’s a disaffected, sardonic, kind of callous twentysomething who enjoys her booze and morning-after pills. And she also happens to be blind.

In Thursday’s series premiere, we meet Murphy (played by Shameless‘ Perry Mattfeld) mid-coitus, as her guide dog Pretzel watches nearby. “This dog is so weird. He follows me around everywhere. He’s like a stalker,” Murphy says dryly.

Afterward, Murphy sends her sexual partner on his way without so much as a cuddle. When he notes that she doesn’t have his number to text him later,...

‘You’re the Worst': Why the Premiere Featured a Different Couple Instead of Jimmy and Gretchen
Chris Geere
(The following story features spoilers from Wednesday’s premiere episode of “You’re the Worst” Season 5)

Over its first four seasons, “You’re the Worst” has simultaneously made fun of, and paid homage to, the romantic-comedy genre. But during Wednesday night’s season premiere, the Fxx comedy kicked off its final run by leaning fully into the “paid homage” part.

And to do so, “You’re the Worst” used a completely different couple from Jimmy Shive-Overly (Chris Geere) and Gretchen Cutler (Aya Cash) to tell its version of a cheesy, 1990s-set rom-com story. “We just thought it would be really fun to do a real, pure ’90s rom-com homage,” series creator Stephen Falk explained to the TheWrap. “What would be a very Jimmy and Gretchen way into doing that?”

By having them craft their own (completely made-up) origin story, of course.

Aya Cash for The Cut
‘You’re the Worst’ Review: Season 5 Is Just a Show, Standing in Front of Its Viewers, Demanding to Be Acknowledged
Aya Cash for The Cut
“You’re the Worst” is a love story that casts a wary eye toward other love stories. Like its leads, Gretchen (Aya Cash) and Jimmy (Chris Geere), Stephen Falk’s Fxx series narrows its eyes when conventional couples approach — or conventional attitudes about romances persist unchecked. But it’s not cynical. It’s not unromantic. And in its final 13 episodes, the shrewd, stimulating, and tuxedo-black comedy proves it’s not an anti-rom-com at all (as it’s been billed). It’s simply a love story made for a new era of romance: “Notting Hill” mixed with “High Fidelity” for the millennial generation.

It’s fitting, then, that the premiere episode starts with a dueling parody/homage to ’90s-era romantic comedies — with Jimmy and Gretchen nowhere in sight. The first half of “The Intransigence of Love,” written and directed by Falk, is devoted to video store clerk Jake (Morgan Krantz) and...

Xx Review
Xx – an all-female directed horror anthology – couldn’t push against genre representation at a better time. You’d think those involved would come out fiery, focused and full of appropriate rage given current gender voicelessness. This was a chance for horror to champion female filmmakers, yet assertions are tepid at best. Even past the failed settling of gender scores, Xx lacks horror establishment of the basest engagement. Only one chapter stands out (victorious because of competition), while three more efforts drag their feet without enthusiasm. No statement is made, no mic is dropped and no lasting message lingers past the credits. Enjoy another mixed bag of spooky stories that do no bumping in any night.

Please note, such disinterest isn’t because my feeble male brain can’t comprehend a different perspective. Three of the four main characters are mothers, all caught in family dilemmas. That’s not where my disconnection stems.

Sundance 2017 Review: Xx Confidently Showcases the Horrific Talents of its Filmmakers
Horror anthologies can be a tough feat to pull off, especially when you’re trying to pull together different filmmakers’ visions into one cohesive experience. That being said, Xx, which recently celebrated its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, succeeds in delivering four wildly distinct stories from several female directors, featuring the talents of Jovanka Vuckovic, Karyn Kusama, Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent), and Roxanne Benjamin. Beyond just its historical significance, Xx stands out as one of the more successful anthologies we’ve seen as of late, regardless of the gender of its directors.

Xx starts off with Vuckovic’s contribution, The Box, which is based on a story of the same name by acclaimed author Jack Ketchum. In the segment, we follow Susan (Natalie Brown), a mother who watches helplessly as an unknown force literally consumes her family after her son, Danny (Peter DaCunha), takes a peek inside...
