‘Friday the 13th’ 4K Review – How Does the Remake Hold Up 15 Years Later? [Friday the 13th Week]
Image
While remakes are a longstanding tradition in the horror genre, 2003’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ushered in a decade-dominating trend of reinventing classic genre properties for the new millennium. Hoping to replicate the success of Texas Chainsaw, production company Platinum Dunes re-teamed with director Marcus Nispel for a contemporary take on Friday the 13th in 2009.

Like many of the best remakes, Friday the 13th doesn’t recycle the same plot and characters from the 1980 film. The script, penned by Freddy vs. Jason scribes Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, strikes a careful balance between fresh and familiar by blending novel concepts with interpolated elements from the first four Friday the 13th films — from Mrs. Voorhees to sackhead Jason to the iconic hockey mask.

Following an extended prologue — which streamlines the summer camp slasher formula into 20 breakneck minutes before the title card drops — ruggedly handsome Clay Miller is introduced. While searching the...

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2, Episode 7 Soft-Launches a New Character
Image
The following contains discussions of domestic abuse, harm to children and sexual assault, along with spoilers for Criminal Minds: Evolution, Season 2, Episode 7, "Piranha."

Serial killers are scary, which is why stories about them, both fictional and true, remain intriguing. This premise sustained Criminal Minds: Evolution and its beloved predecessor, the original Criminal Minds, for 17 seasons over nearly 20 years. With "Piranha," Evolution takes a detour from its larger story to introduce a new character with an unrelated "case of the week." It's a deeply disturbing episode, which is both exactly what fans want and what critics hate most about it.

There are three episodes left in Season 2 of Evolution, which earned a Season 3 renewal just before the premiere. These final episodes will likely focus almost entirely on the two ongoing serial mysteries: the Gold Star killers and Season 1's "big bad" Elias Voit (Zack Gilford). This episode, in particular, spends most...

Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, and Andy Garcia in Ocean's Eleven (2001)
Asian movie stars looking to cash in at the casino
Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, and Andy Garcia in Ocean's Eleven (2001)
Casinos have played prominent roles in many blockbuster films over the past decades with film producers taking advantage of the illustrious settings and glamour provided by casinos. In some of the biggest hits involving casinos, Asian actors have also played their parts in iconic scenes and storylines. These movies also serve as a nice reminder that casinos still very much exist despite the ongoing shift to the online world.

These portrayals of film characters in a physical casino are refreshing to see in a world where live casino games at Cloudbet for example are starting to take over. For the traditional casino players, here are a few movies to get those juices flowing and the actors of Asian descent that have starred in these Hollywood blockbusters.

H.P. Lovecraft
Revisiting the ‘Friday the 13th’ Remake On Its 15th Anniversary [Horror Queers Podcast]
H.P. Lovecraft
Stupendous Tits

After dipping into the world of H.P. Lovecraft in Re-Animator (listen) and checking out an early adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray (listen), somehow we’re already on our third episode of February. And while the holiday doesn’t line up, we couldn’t pass up a chance to revisit Friday the 13th (2009) for its fifteenth anniversary.

In the Marcus Nispel remake, a group of friends travel to the palatial country house of Trent (Travis Van Winkle) near what was once Camp Crystal Lake. As Trent’s girlfriend Jenna (Danielle Panabaker) bonds with Clay (Jared Padalecki) over the disappearance of his sister Whitney (Amanda Righetti), their friends Chewie (Aaron Yoo), Bree (Julianna Guill), Lawrence (Arlen Escarpeta), Nolan (Ryan Hansen) and Chelsea (Willa Ford) are being picked off one by one by Jason Voorhees (Derek Mears).

Who will survive their encounter with survivalist Jason? Can anything top the...

Friday the 13th: pages from script for unmade sequel to 2009 film reveal what happened to Jason’s dad
Image
Last Friday, which happened to be a Friday the 13th, screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift shared some pages from the script they wrote for the unmade sequel to the 2009 version of Friday the 13th (watch it Here). In those pages, we got to read the description of a scene where a character would have been killed by iconic masked slasher Jason Voorhees while riding down a zip line. But those weren’t the only pages Shannon and Swift shared from the script last Friday. They also unveiled a couple pages that reveal what happened to Jason’s dad – and you can read them in this embed:

Ok, since it's #FridayThe13th how about one more? Our sequel script had lots of stuff for long time fans, including returning characters! Let's reveal two of them now: https://t.co/WhNTVuo2Nx pic.twitter.com/yUdnv2L6bL

Friday the 13th writers share death scene from unmade sequel to 2009 film
Image
Damian Shannon and Mark Swift were the writers who cracked the Freddy vs. Jason story and pulled that project out of development hell, where it had been trapped for a decade. Six years later, when Warner Bros. teamed up with Paramount and Platinum Dunes for a Friday the 13th reboot, Shannon and Swift were again the writers. (You can hear all about that Friday the 13th in our latest Wtf Happened video.) Since the reboot made over $91 million at the global box office on a budget of $19 million when it was released in February of 2009, it was no surprise when it was announced that it was going to receive a sequel, to be shot in 3-D and released on August 13, 2010. Then the studios couldn’t agree on the money split, so the sequel was shelved… but not before Shannon and Swift had already written the full script. Today, to celebrate Friday the 13th,...

To hear all about it, check out the video embedded above.

Directed by Marcus Nispel from a screenplay by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift (who share a story credit with Mark Wheaton), Friday the 13th (2009) has the following synopsis: Against the advice of locals and police, Clay scours the eerie woods surrounding Crystal Lake for his missing sister. But the rotting cabins of an abandoned summer camp are not the only things he finds. Hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees lies in wait for a chance to use his razor-sharp machete on Clay and the group of college students...

21: This Controversial 2008 Heist Movie Is Still on Netflix
Image
Some movies deal with real-life situations that are meant to intrigue and fascinate. Smaller stories, or stories that have never had the type of spotlight that Hollywood thought they deserved. But sometimes (wait for it) Hollywood sensationalizes or changes the plot to fit their narrative.

One of these movies was the 2008 movie 21—a film based on a book based on a sensational story. However, the film made some poor casting choices, and since its release, it has garnered more attention for its faults than for its triumphs.

21 and Bringing Down the House

The film 21 was based on a book by Ben Mezrich called Bringing Down the House. It tells the (semi) true story of an MIT student named Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) who joins the blackjack team led by Professor Mickey Rosa (Kevin Spacey). The team has such a high level of intelligence and skill that they begin making regular trips to Las Vegas.

6 Incredible Asian Actors In Casino Or Gambling Movies
It’s no secret that Asians are woefully underrepresented in American Cinema, but that thinking has started to shift in the last few years. This is especially true afer the majority-Asian cast Crazy Rich Asians became the most successful rom-com in decades. According to Vice.com, there are a slew of blockbuster movies coming out soon with Asian lead characters. We’re even about to see our first Asian Marvel Super Hero. In the past, Hollywood has seen backlash for constantly whitewashing films, removing Asian actors from source materials and casting white Americans to take their places. It seems that Hollywood is starting to see the power of the Asian American market. Here are 6 Asian actors who have appeared in gambling and casino movies over the years.

#1. Aaron Yoo

Aaron Yoo is a Korean American actor who was born in Dallas, TX. He has been in several feature films such as Disturbia,...

“There’s a quote that, ‘You cannot be what you cannot see,’ and we think there’s a lot of truth in that,” says Peter Ash Lee, the New York-based editor behind the Asian-American arts and culture magazine Burdock. “Growing up, we didn’t see many reflections of ourselves in media, and when we did, they were often portrayals lacking any depth.”

The feelings of being “unseen” and a desire for multi-dimensional Asian-American experiences were what inspired Lee and his sister, Hannah, to create Burdock, which launched in April at New York’s Apex for Youth Gala.

“We’ve often been painted with a monolithic brush, but the Asian community contains so many multitudes and no two stories are identical — there are thousands of unique experiences and stories to tell,” Lee says.

Trailer for Action Comedy 'Killing Gunther' with Arnold Schwarzenegger
"You want to be king, you have to kill the king." Saban Films has debuted the official trailer for the action comedy titled Killing Gunther, starring the one-and-only badass Arnold Schwarzenegger as Gunther. This looks hilarious and much better than any of the other self-parody work Schwarzenegger has done recently. The plot is about a group of eccentric assassins who are fed up with Gunther, the world's greatest hitman, so they come up with a scheme to kill him. But of course Gunther turns out to always be one step ahead. Along with Schwarzenegger, the film features Cobie Smulders, Hannah Simone, Taran Killam, Allison Tolman, Aaron Yoo, Peter Kelamis, Alex Duncan, Amir Talai, and Bobby Moynihan. Seriously, this looks pretty damn amazing, the kind of action comedy we need more of. I'm so down for this. ‘StartUp’ Exclusive Clip: Crackle’s New Drama Features Martin Freeman And Adam Brody On Opposite Sides of the Law
Ron Perlman, Adam Brody, Martin Freeman, Edi Gathegi, and Otmara Marrero in StartUp (2016)
Sometimes one new technological innovation can change the world, and sometimes you need to play in the underground to get it started. Crackle’s new original series “StartUp” follows a group of Miami underdog techies — intelligent financier Nick Talman (Adam Brody), unorthodox tech whiz Izzy Morales (Otmara Marrero), and Haitian gang leader Ronald Dacey (Edi Gathegi) — who form an unexpected partnership to get a great idea off the ground, even though they’re founded on dirty money. Meanwhile, FBI agent Phil Rask (Martin Freeman) is hot on their trail, and he’s willing to travel deep into the Miami underbelly to take them down. The series also stars Wayne Knight (“Seinfeld) and Aaron Yoo (“Blacklist”),and is produced by Critical Content and Hollywood Gang Productions. Watch an exclusive clip from “StartUp” featuring Izzy explaining her idea of GenCoin, a new currency free of corruption.

Startup Trailer: Martin Freeman Tries to Take Down a Tech Company in New TV Show
Here's the first trailer for StartUp, a new TV series starring Martin Freeman about the rise of a tech company putting forth a new digital currency (with obvious similarities to Bitcoin). It's set in Miami and looks very stylish, but the biggest problem with it is that it's on Crackle, Sony's streaming network. I was about to complain about how I don't want to have to pay to subscribe to yet another service like that, but apparently Crackle is free (I don't currently watch anything on there, and I don't know if I ever have). So I guess the biggest problem is going to be remembering that this show exists in the first place and heading over to Crackle to check it out.

Here's the official synopsis, and let us know what you think about the trailer below.

Launching Tuesday, September 6, 2016, the 10-episode, one-hour series is set amongst the unconstrained,...

Foster's Socially Conscious Wall Street Hostage Thriller Suffers from Triteness, Dishonesty
'Money Monster' with George Clooney and Jack O'Connell: TV celebrity and unwise investor/hostage taker. 'Money Monster' review: Jodie Foster movie suffers from both qualitative and intellectual disconnect Sometimes there's a difference between what a movie thinks it is and what it actually is. Usually it's a qualitative disconnect, as in “this movie thinks it's exciting but it's actually boring” or “this movie assumes Kevin Hart is funny when, in fact, he's not.” In the case of Money Monster, the divide is also an intellectual versus anti-intellectual one. The fourth film directed by Jodie Foster fancies itself a ripped from the headlines wail from the bottom of the economic ladder. A thriller-cum-exposé into how Wall Street and big media suckered average Americans into following the Pied Pipers of TV's financial punditry class over the cliff into economic ruin. However, the movie we're really getting is...

Stars: Maria Bello, Frank Grillo, Cody Horn, Dustin Milligan, Megan Park, Scott Mechlowicz, Aaron Yoo, Alex Goode, Ashton Leigh, Terence Rosemore, Griff Furst, Jesse Steccato, Meyer DeLeeuw | Written by Max La Bella | Directed by Will Canon

James Wan, the man behind Saw, Dead Silence (a personal favourite), Insidious and The Conjuring, dons producer cap once more – following the success of Annabelle – for Demonic, the second feature from director Will Canon (Brotherhood); and a movie that seems to share more in common with the work of its producer that just having his name on the film…

Demonic follows Detective Mark Lewis and psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Klein as they question the lone survivor of a ghost-hunting excursion turned horrific massacre – where five college students were brutally murdered inside an abandoned home. The amateur paranormal activists were simply seeking proof of poltergeist phenomenon at the supposed haunted house. But what started out as...

Wong Fu Productions’ Feature Film ‘Everything Before Us’ Heads To Vimeo
Wong Fu Productions has secured a distribution partner for its first feature-length film. The YouTube group, founded in 2003 and comprised of Philip Chang, Wesley Chan, and Ted Fu, will release the movie Everything Before Us exclusively via Vimeo On Demand on June 3, 2015.

Originally premiering at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival on April 23, Everything Before Us is a science fiction romantic drama set in a modern day world not terribly unlike our own, except for the fact a person's romantic history is documented like a credit score. The flick focuses on a couple trying to overcome the inherent drawbacks of the system for individuals who haven't had a lot of luck in love.

Everything Before Us stars Aaron Yoo (The Tomorrow People), Ki Hong Lee (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Randall Park (The Interview), Brittany Ishibashi (Political Animals), Victoria Park (Raven’s Touch), and Brandon Soo Hoo (Tropic Thunder).

Demonic Trailer Howls In
Demonic (2015)
Welcome, one and all to yet another abject lesson in what should be called Cinematic Séances Are A Bad Idea For Everyone Involved. As if we didn’t already have last year’s Ouija to point this out, along comes the first trailer for horror thriller Demonic to remind the world that nothing good happens when stupid people decide to try to dabble in dark forces. This time around, those trying to figure out what happened when one of these ill-judged ceremonies turns deadly include a psychologist (Maria Bello) and a detective (Frank Grillo). Naturally, they start to dig into the case and the foreboding old house that it all went down in, trying to piece together what really happened. Was this an incursion from the Great Beyond? Or are the participants just run-of-the-mill killers trying to cover their tracks? The trailer leaves little room for doubt on that front.

Watch: First Trailer for James Wan-Produced Horror 'Demonic'
I wasn't even aware of Demonic, a film produced and co-written by James Wan (Saw, Furious 7), until this morning. Directed by Will Canon (Air Jesus), who also co-wrote the film, the story seems to follow traditional territory as a police officer and psychologist investigate the deaths of five people who were killed while trying to summon ghosts. And it would appear some surveillance footage captured all the dirty deeds. The movie stars Maria Bello, Frank Grillo, Cody Horn, Dustin Milligan, Scott Mechlowicz and Aaron Yoo and as of now it doesn't have a release date, though it seems a safe bet it will find its way into theaters this October or thereabouts. Watch the trailer below. sb id="1334731" height="360" width="640"...

Trailers: "Lazarus," "Demonic," "Good Kill"
A couple of key trailers have hit in the past day or so. First up comes the first trailer for the "Flatliners"-esque "The Lazarus Effect". Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass, Evan Peters, and Donald Glover star in the film about a research team who accidentally kill a colleague during the experiments in mapping the brain. When they reanimate her, well, what comes back is not what they bargained for.

Next up there's the first trailer for Will Canon's "Demonic," the James Wan-produced horror tale starring Frank Grillo and Maria Bello, as a detective and psychologist respectively, inspecting a brutal massacre inside an abandoned home. Cody Horn, Dustin Milligan, Megan Park, Scott Mechlowicz and Aaron Yoo also star.

Finally there's the trailer for "Good Kill," Andrew Nicole's drama thriller about Las Vegas-based drone pilots starring Ethan Hawke and Bruce Greenwood. Hawke plays a former fighter pilot turned drone pilot...

Demonic: Trailer for James Wan-Produced Horror Film
James Wan has created some of the best horror movies of the last 10 years. The first full trailer for Demonic was released today, and it leans pretty heavy on Wan's name as writer and producer. This is the second film from director Will Canon, who is not mentioned in the trailer. The synopsis is pretty simple: "A police officer and a psychologist investigate the deaths of five people who were killed while trying to summon ghosts." With a "story by" credit from Wan, odds are it's going to be a well-plotted script. The movie has a bit of a found footage vibe without relying on it to tell the story. My favorite part of the trailer - aside from the floating blood - is the infrared camera.

Demonic stars Maria Bello as Dr. Elizabeth Klein and Frank Grillo as Detective Mark Lewis. The movie also features an ensemble of "victims...

Watch the First Trailer for James Wan’s Demonic
“There are a lot of theories about how to open these gates between our world and the underworld. The trick is finding them. Everybody join hands.” Ghost hunters want to hear from the dead, but what if a haunted house responded very violently? Previously known as House of Horror, we’ve been tracking the James Wan-produced Demonic since early 2011, and now the movie about ghost-seeking gone wrong has received its first trailer.

From James Wan, Demonic was directed by Will Canon (Brotherhood) and filmed in Baton Rouge. The script was written by Max La Bella and is based on an original idea from Wan:

“The film centers on the aftermath of a horrific massacre: five college students, brutally murdered inside a decrepit, abandoned home. Fresh on the scene, detective Mark Lewis and the police department’s psychologist, Dr. Elizabeth Klein, question one of the few survivors who explains they were amateur ghost-hunters,...

First Demonic Trailer: Could the James Wan-Produced Haunted House Movie Be Worth the Wait?
Demonic has been around for a while. Director Will Canon shot the film back in February of 2013, but it didn’t score a release date until late July 2014 and then in September, The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films nixed the December 12th release entirely. So when’s the film coming out? A new date has yet to be set, but according to the film's very first trailer, it’s coming soon. Demonic stars Frank Grillo as a detective and Maria Bello as a psychologist, and follows what happens when the pair investigates a brutal massacre inside an abandoned home that took the lives of five college students. Hit the jump to check out the first Demonic trailer. The film also stars Cody Horn, Dustin Milligan, Megan Park, Scott Mechlowicz and Aaron Yoo, and is produced by James Wan. You’d think a film that keeps getting delayed wouldn’t look too promising,...

Demonic (2015)
'Demonic' Trailer from 'Saw' Creator James Wan
Demonic (2015)
From the mind of James Wan, the co-creator and director of Saw, comes a new kind of horror experience in Demonic. An international trailer has been released for this haunting thriller, which pits a team of ghost hunters against an evil spirit.

Demonic centers on the aftermath of a horrific massacre where five college students were brutally murdered inside an abandoned home. Detective Mark Lewis and psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Klein question one of the few survivors who explains they were amateur ghost-hunters, seeking out paranormal phenomenon at the abandoned house, which was believed to be haunted. But what started out as a harmless activity turned into something truly terrifying.

Check out this first very scary look at Demonic, which comes from director Will Canon, who mixes a traditional narrative with the found-footage genre to bring the ghost hunter's Pov to life in freighting new ways. With a cast that features Frank Grillo and Maria Bello,...

'Amityville' and 'Demonic' Lose Their Release Dates
Demonic (2015)
Dimension Films has suddenly pulled two upcoming horror projects from their release slate, Demonic and Amityville: The Awakening, just a few months before they were both set to hit theaters. The studio has not issued new release dates for either project as of yet, and it isn't immediately clear why they were both pulled.

Back in late July, Dimension Films issued a December 12, 2014 release date for Demonic, which is written and directed by Will Canon (Brotherhood), based on an original story by producer James Wan. Frank Grillo and Maria Bello star as a detective and a psychologist who interview one of the survivors of a brutal massacre where five college students were killed. The survivor explains that they were all ghost hunters, trying to discover a paranormal phenomenon.

Amityville: The Awakening had been set for a January 2, 2015 release since December, with TWC-Dimension releasing the first trailer last month. Jennifer Jason Leigh...

Release Delays for Amityville: The Awakening & James Wan’s Demonic
Filmgoers can knock all they want, but they’ll have to wait an undetermined length of time before theaters answer the door and let them into two upcoming haunted house movies from The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films. Amityville: The Awakening and James Wan’s Demonic, both initially scheduled to be released this winter, have now been delayed.

According to Box Office Mojo, Weinstein/Dimension have delayed the debuts of Amityville: The Awakening (originally slated for a January 2nd, 2015 release) and James Wan’s Demonic (initially scheduled to hit theaters on December 12th, 2014). No new release dates have been penciled in on the calendar, but we’ll keep Daily Dead readers updated on further announcements.

The latest installment in the horror movie franchise that began in 1979, Amityville: The Awakening follows a single mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and her three children as they move into the dreaded 112 Ocean Avenue home in New York,...
