Splice director Vincenzo Natali reflects on its controversial scene and legacy 15 years later. Co-written and directed by Natali who was previously known for Cube, Cypher, and Nothing the sci-fi horror film from 2009 follows two genetic engineers who splice together DNA to create a human-animal hybrid creature called Dren, who they raise to disastrous results. Academy Award winners Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley lead the cast alongside Delphine Chanac as Dren, Brandon McGibbon, Simona Maicanescu, and David Hewlett.

Now, 15 years after the film's release, Natali reflected on Splice's controversial sex scene and its overall legacy in an interview with IndieWire.

Splice is presented by Guillermo del Toro. Splice is the story of two genetic engineer scientists whose ambitious side-project creates a creature that would have anti-stem cell campaigners crowing “We told you so, God-playing heathens!” The film has the potential to reach classic status within the (admittedly underachieving) genre of sci-fi B-movies. We are introduced to Elsa (Sarah Polley) and Clive (Adrian Brody), our maverick leads. They are funded by, and also up against, The Man: corporate suits who drag them to board meetings to remind them that their research grant doesn’t come for free. The purpose of all their lab-based gene-splicing is to discover a cure-all protein that will prevent the spread of diseases in livestock. Elsa and Clive, however, have bigger ideas.

Chicago – In the opening moments of “Splice,” the audience is experiencing the world through the eyes of a newborn baby. Yet unlike Gaspar Noé’s “Enter the Void,” which recreated human perception with eerie perfection, this point of view shot is blatantly skewed. The doctors seem to be looking at a pulsating fishbowl rather than a baby. That theory is swiftly proven to be fairly accurate.

The newborn is, in fact, not a human, but an animal hybrid created by fearless scientists Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley). Though they insist that their work aims to cure diseases such as Parkinson’s, they often seem a bit too fond of playing god. And when their bosses at the pharmaceutical company demand to see experiments that yield lucrative results, the two devoted lovers and collaborators decide to conduct their controversial work in private. Their next goal: splicing DNA to form the first-ever human-animal hybrid.

Another week in October, another bounty crop of horror DVDs and Blu-rays. This week we have home entertainment from recent theatrical releases of nightmares of the mind as well as re-releases of classic and campy horror, all with boatloads of extras.

Then there are other horror titles that are being re-released on Blu-ray or in packs for double dipping. On top of that, horror offerings from Asia, past seasons of TV shows, manga, novels, and even video games are all vying for our pocketbooks. And we still have four more weeks of October to go.

We’ve just received this lovely new poster for Adrien Body’s new movie, Splice which is released in the UK 6th August. The movie is directed by Vincenzo Natali and also stars Sarah Polley, Delphine Chanéac, Brandon McGibbon, Simona Maicanescu and David Hewlett.

We’ve previously posted the trailer up here for this rather bizarre movie but it’s one I can’t wait to see. Jon and Craig have both seen it already and our review will be going up in due course.

Without a doubt, Splice is a film that is likely to divide the public. However, we can all agree that Vincenzo Natali's latest film is rather entertaining and that the cast does a great job.Elsa Kast (Sarah Polley) and Clive Nicoli (Adrien Brody) are two married genetic engineers who work for a pharmaceutical company. Their the task is to develop a medical protein by using a mix of animal genes from various species. In the process, Elsa adds human DNA despite their boss's (David Hewlett) warning against human cloning. As a result of that, a new organism comes to life. Clive wanted to kill that creature, but Elsa convinces him that it's worth keeping that creature alive in order to study it. As she grows quickly, the creature - which will be called Dren by Elsa - becomes a deformed female infant (Abigail Chu).

The absence of David-James Fernades' Re-Wire from this year's edition of the Worldwide Short Film Festival was a real head scratcher for me, the local production seeming like an obvious pick for the festival's SciFi program, at the bare minimum, and possibly one of the festival's competitive official selection programs. But while I personally think it's far and away one of the better science fiction shorts of the year it didn't make it in for some reason, which means local audiences have not yet had the chance to see Splice co-star Brandon McGibbon deliver a sterling performance as a young man seeking the help of an unorthodox neurosurgeon to rid him of 'the fear'.

McGibbon has a relatively minor role in Splice - he's Adrien Brody's brother - but he's front and center from start to finish of this and he's excellent. Take a look at this freshly released scene below.

Adrian Brody is Clive and Sarah Polley is Elsa. They are hot scientists-as-rock-stars, having developed several new animal disease cures through their genetic splicing of different species. The results of the gene weaving are more protoplasmic than discernible animal, but the research yields a big cash outlay from a mega-pharmaceutical corporation, hoping to isolate protein strains that can translate to new drugs.

Elsa becomes restless with the random animal experiments and hopes to expand to the next frontier – the splicing of human genetic material with other species. Unknown to Clive, she uses the lab facilities to begin the process, using her own DNA material in the mixer.

In the film, Clive (Brody) and Elsa (Polley) are superstars of the genetic engineering world. They specialize in splicing together DNA from different animals to create fantastical new hybrids. The charismatic couple wants to use human DNA in a new hybrid – something that could yield astronomical medical benefits. The pharmaceutical company that funds their research, however, is more interested in exploiting their earlier triumphs for easier, short-term profit. Clive and Elsa secretly conduct their own experiment. The result is Dren: an amazing creature who exhibits an array of unexpected developments, both physical and intellectual. Dren exceeds their wildest dreams… and, ultimately, their most terrifying nightmare.

The movie is directed by Vincenzo Natali, exec. produced by Guillermo Del Toro. Also stars Delphine Chaneac, David Hewlett and Brandon McGibbon.

It's been a long road for Cube director Vincenzo Natali to bring his ten-years-in-the-making film Splice to the big screen, and now that Dark Castle has acquired the creature feature, he's finally putting the finishing touches on his masterpiece.

Fangoria caught up with Natali for an interview, and the director had the following to share with fans:

"You're going to see a slightly nipped-and-tucked version," Natali tells Fango. "I'm actually going into the editing room next week, and if they’re true to their word, it's just going to be cosmetic. It really comes down to Joel [Silver]. He loves the movie and actually enjoys the parts that would scare most producers away. He's being very courageous releasing this. There are also a few things I'm changing after seeing the film with an audience. I believe what will come out of it will be a new and improved cut, but in essence,...

Premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Splice, ended up selling to Joel Silver’s Dark Castle label distributed by Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. has already set a June 4, 2010 release date.

This psychological Sci Fi thriller is really twisted and awesome as we know that two young rebellious scientists try to splice together human and animal DNA to create a new organism.

With the modest budget for the film which looks like a Hollywood produced film this is a huge bet by Dark Castle to turn Splice into a Paranormal Activity-like success.

Summary: In the months leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, an American man arrives in Shanghai to find his friend recently murdered. In investigating his friend's death, he stumbles upon a secret the United States government has been keeping and falls in love in the process.

Analysis: After being granted permission to shoot in the Chinese city, the $10 million production found its permit quickly being revoked by the Government who expressed concerns about the script. The result is Bangkok and the United Kingdom standing in for the real Shanghai which seems kind of against the entire point.

Cusack himself has emphatically endorsed the project in interviews, calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity", but being stuck at the cash-strapped Weinstein Company means that its release plans are unsure beyond a vague promise of a limited bow around Easter.

Back in late October I received an email from a young film maker by the name of David James Fernandes.  "Check out my website", he said, "I've got a bunch of stills on there from a film I'm finishing up."  I get this basic email thirty or forty times a week, on average, but the stills I found on Fernandes' site were miles above most of what people send.  So I wrote him back and commented on the fact that he lives right around the corner from me and asked how close things were to be done.  Really close.  So close, in fact, that I chose not to run the stills at all, explaining that "A trailer will get the job done a whole lot better."

Good choice.
