Liam Neeson is headlining the upcoming reboot of the Naked Gun franchise, which previously featured actor Leslie Nielsen in the lead role. According to the director of The Naked Gun, the new movie will not feature Neeson impersonating Nielsen’s iconic character despite playing the latter’s son.
Neeson will likely bring his comedic sensibilities to the legacy sequel, which is set to be the franchise’s fourth feature film installment. As a result, Neeson is avoiding the major mistake of emulating Nielsen, which could have doomed the movie. Here is what The Naked Gun director Akiva Schaffer had to say about Neeson’s performance in the movie.

Fans of the original Naked Gun films are probably just hoping that this summer’s upcoming reboot is A) funny, and B) doesn’t tarnish the legacy of the franchise any more than the crappy 2012 mobile game already did. But does the movie also have the potential to help justify our very existence on this planet? According to director Akiva Schaffer, some audiences have said that it does.
Schaffer recently spoke with Empire Magazine about the high-profile project. First of all, he made it a point to clarify that star Liam Neeson, despite his soundalike name, won’t be attempting to imitate original Naked Gun star, Leslie Nielsen. “Liam’s got his own things, but they’re not Leslie Nielsen’s things,” Schaffer explained. “It would also be unfair to Liam (to ask him to impersonate Nielsen), because he’d be spending the whole movie trying to match something that...

There’s one problem with presenting a new take on The Naked Gun: there’s only one Leslie Nielsen. Across the Airplane! and Naked Gun movies, the actor had his own deliriously funny comedic style, one that’s impossible to ape. And so, with the new The Naked Gun, a Leslie Nielsen impression is not on the cards. No, director Akiva Schaffer – one third of The Lonely Island – instead has entrusted Liam Neeson with lampooning the world of police procedurals; like Nielsen, much of career has been in serious roles, but with hints that a comic juggernaut is lying in wait.
As the filmmaker tells Empire, Neeson is getting to put his own spin on Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Nielsen’s character. “Liam’s got his own things, but they’re not Leslie Nielsen’s things,” says Schaffer. “It would also be unfair to Liam [to try to mimic Nielsen], because he...

Judging from the trailers, the upcoming Naked Gun reboot is seemingly going to be chock-full of references to the original movie trilogy, up to and including a brief, photographic cameo from late accused murderer/prank show auteur O.J. Simpson.
But will the new movie include an appearance from the one living celebrity who’s been in every other installment of the Naked Gun series and wasn’t married to Elvis?
As you may remember, early in 1988’s The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, Frank returns from his jurisdictionally-questionable trip to Beirut and discovers a crowd of reporters and fans waiting for him at the airport. But after addressing the spectators, Frank is informed that they’re actually there to greet his fellow passenger: “Weird Al” Yankovic.
The cameo came about because Yankovic was a huge fan of Police Squad!. “I still consider that my favorite TV series of all time,...

2005 to 2012 was very much a golden era for "Saturday Night Live", and a big part of that can be credited to Andy Samberg. He and his "Lonely Island" crew, made up of Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, brought the show into the digital age. They made digital shorts a cornerstone of modern "SNL," and they've cursed the new "Please Don't Destroy" trio to forever live in their shadow.
While Samberg was most famous for his digital material, he still showed up constantly in live sketches throughout his tenure. My personal favorite is his Larry the Goose, a "Weekend Update" recurring character who doesn't think the Miracle on the Hudson in 2009 was a miracle at all:
But despite Samberg being such an important cast member during his seven seasons on the show, in 2012 he officially called it quits. He departed at the end of season 37, a year after his fellow "Lonely...

A brand-new Naked Gun movie is on the way, and this time Liam Neeson is stepping into the world of silly crime-fighting as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. The film is set to come out in U.S. theaters on August 1, 2025, and it promises a mix of throwback jokes and new characters that aim to bring back the goofy fun of the original films.
The director is Akiva Schaffer, who also co-wrote the script along with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. According to Paramount Pictures, this will be the fourth movie in the series, following 1994’s Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult.
Instead of a reboot, it’s being called a legacy sequel, meaning it continues the story but with a new generation. Neeson plays the son of Leslie Nielsen’s iconic detective character.

Akiva Schaffer’s reboot of The Naked Gun has been winning over a lot of skeptical fans with its latest trailer — but the director of the original film has yet to be convinced.
David Zucker, who co-directed classics such as Airplane! and Top Secret!, has been very critical of the new movie, recently telling Fox News that “just being a fan” doesn’t qualify the filmmakers to take on the goofy franchise.
Part of Zucker’s dissatisfaction with the new project seemingly stems from the fact that Paramount previously turned down his pitches for potential franchise continuations. In a new interview with Film Threat, Zucker confirmed that one rejected sequel idea was a spy movie spoof called Naked: Impossible, which had been preceded by a more straightforward continuation dubbed Naked Gun 4: Nordberg Did It.

Liam Neeson in his new movie, The Naked Gun, is going to be very different from his original action hero image. Before you see him in a completely different space, you might want to revisit one of his most underrated movies, Absolution. The film was first released in November 2024 and stars Neeson as an ageing, brooding mobster who is battling Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (Cte).
He is seen trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter and grandson. While the movie was overlooked as one of his regular genre films, it is a must-watch considering the gripping plot and interesting performances in it.
Why we think Liam Neeson’s Absolution shouldn’t be missed
Absolution is a movie that deserves much more recognition for its emotional depth and quiet intensity. The movie earned $4.2 million at the box office and takes you on an emotional journey you didn’t know you needed. Unlike his previous invincible characters,...

Liam Neeson stars as Frank Drebin Jr in the new The Naked Gun film – and the new trailer has landed.
When Liam Neeson first revealed that he was in line to head up a new take on The Naked Gun he seemed resigned to the fact that it could go badly, stating back in 2021 that “It’ll either finish my career or bring it in another direction. I honestly don’t know.”
Here in 2025, we’re not too far from finding out if that’s the case given that Neeson’s new spin on the beloved cop spoof series – made famous by the late Leslie Nielsen’s wonderful comic talents – is just a few months away.
2025’s The Naked Gun is headed to cinemas on 1st August, courtesy of Paramount.
Now we have a full trailer to enjoy ahead of the film’s release, following on from the well-received teaser that arrived back in April.

The summer movie season is upon us, and in addition to dinosaurs, superheroes and Fridays of the freaky variety, we’re getting a brand new Naked Gun movie. The reboot of the iconic comedy franchise replaces the late Leslie Nielsen with Liam Neeson, who stars as the chronologically-baffling Frank Drebin Jr.
The movie, directed by The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer and produced by Seth MacFarlane, released a teaser trailer earlier this year. And while audiences praised the teaser’s meta O.J. joke, the rest of it felt a little off. The weirdly violent clips of Neeson’s Drebin dressed as a schoolgirl murdering bank robbers arguably didn’t match the tone of the original spoof.
Well, now Paramount has debuted a full-length trailer for The Naked Gun. Thankfully, this one actually contains some gags that actually feel of a piece with the other Naked Gun movies.

Photo Credit: Paramount Pictures Get ready for pure comic mayhem! The preview for the upcoming The Naked Gun film just arrived, and it looks like it’s going to be a riot! This movie promises to resurrect the distinctive kind of slapstick comedy we have been longing for. The premise? Leading Police Squad and, you know, saving the globe calls for a very specific set of skills only one man has! That man is Lieutenant Frank Drebin Jr., portrayed by none other than Liam Neeson. Yes, Neeson is treading his father’s famously clumsy footsteps and already has deadpan delivery ready. Behind the camera is Director Akiva Schaffer, well-known for his comedic work on Saturday Night Live and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. As producer, Seth MacFarlane, also brings his trademark comic approach. High expectations for lunacy exist with that comic duo at the helm! Joining Liam Neeson on this...

When news first broke that "The Naked Gun" was receiving a legacy sequel starring Liam Neeson, many of us shook our heads and criticized Hollywood for churning out yet another needless reboot. After all, the original movies are some of the best comedies of all time, and no one -- not even an actor of Neeson's quality -- could match the deadpan brilliance of Leslie Nielsen, right? However, those concerns were alleviated after the first "Naked Gun" reboot trailer threw shade at Oj Simpson, suggesting that director Akiva Schaffer and his co-writers Dan Gregor & Doug Mand have some clever zingers up their sleeves.
Well, now it's time for us naysayers to throw up our hands and admit we were wrong, as the latest trailer (see above) boasts a joke so gloriously silly that it wouldn't seem out of place coming from the mouth of Nielsen's clueless detective, Frank Drebin.

As we first reported on ActioNewz.com, the first full trailer for the movie has been released, and it finds Neeson's hapless Lieutenant getting mixed up in all manner of compromising positions.
He's a buffoon, something that's hilariously established with him asking a crook why they "served 20 years for 'man's laughter" and cutting the line for the bathroom by firing his gun. However, things get serious (kinda) when Pamela Anderson's femme fatale arrives on the scene, seeking his help to solve the murder of her brother.

The trailer for the Naked Gun reboot, starring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson, has been revealed.
Arriving in theaters on August 1st, The Naked Gun stars Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., a lieutenant in the LAPD and the son of original Naked Gun protagonist Frank Drebin (famously played by Leslie Neilsen). He works on the force alongside Captain Ed Hocken Jr. (Paul Walter Hauser) and is regularly dispatched around the city to stop crime and prevent disasters; though in typical Naked Gun fashion, Drebin Jr. is one comedic gag away from disaster at all times.
Also joining Neeson’s Drebin Jr. is Beth (Pamela Anderson), who seeks the detective’s help in finding her brother’s killer. Cch Pounder, Kevin Durand, Danny Huston, Liza Koshy, and WWE star Cody Rhodes round out the film’s cast, with several appearing as the children of their original franchise counterparts; in one comedic moment from the trailer,...

Paramount has released an official trailer for The Naked Gun. The movie serves as a reboot of the film trilogy and short-lived TV series that starred Leslie Nielsen.
Liam Neeson is the only man with the particular set of skills necessary to update Police Squad for the 21st century. After the Taken franchise cemented Neeson as one of this generation's leading action icons, the actor has starred in several successful movies for the genre, such as The Grey, Non-Stop, Run All Night, The Commuter, and Cold Pursuit. However, The Naked Gun is the first action movie to really make good use of Neeson's comedic skills, with the actor starring in the reboot as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Nielsen's character of the same name. While the official trailer features a lot of the same footage and jokes from the teaser trailer, there are still plenty of new laughs to go around.

Admit it: it’s hard to imagine The Naked Gun without Leslie Nielsen, or the comedy stylings of filmmaking legends Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker. But worry not. The new sequel not only has Liam Neeson in deadpan comedy mode, one he rarely employs but has previously excelled in – see Life’s Too Short, or The Lego Movie – but also comes from The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer. There’s real potential, then, for something seriously silly that can live up to the original rapid-fire comedies. Check out the trailer:
As was made clear in the film’s first teaser (a gag repeated here too), Neeson plays Frank Drebin Jr., a Police Squad cop hoping to walk in his father’s footsteps. And while Neeson is playing it even straighter than Nielsen’s Drebin Sr. did, the gags remain gloriously silly: Drebin eating several fast foods that upset his stomach; the precinct...

Paramount Pictures has released the full trailer for its reboot of “The Naked Gun.”
The original 1988 film, “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!,” was based on the television comedy “Police Squad!,” which parodied police and crime shows. The movie, a box office hit, was followed by the sequels “The Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear” in 1991 and “Naked Gun 33 ⅓: The Final Insult” in 1994.
Liam Neeson leads as Frank Drebin, the investigator first portrayed by Leslie Nielsen. Paul Walter Hauser plays Captain Ed, previously played by Alan North and George Kennedy in the show and film franchise, respectively. Pamela Anderson plays the love interest, taking over Priscilla Presley’s film role. The cast also includes Danny Huston, Kevin Durand and Liza Koshy.
“Liam is hysterical in it,” Anderson said at the Zurich Film Festival last October.
Neeson also gave kudos to his co-star: “With Pamela,...

From the files of the Police Squad, “The Naked Gun” is back on August 1 in theaters everywhere — the rebooted Liam Neeson version that is. Paramount Pictures has released the theatrical trailer for the continuation of the series from which the similarly-named Leslie Nielsen mined box office gold.
In the new film, Neeson plays Lt. Frank Drebin, Jr., son of Nielsen’s Frank Drebin character. Along for the sure-to-be-wacky ride are Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Cch Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston. Written by Dan Gregor, Doug Maud, and Akiva Schaffer, the movie was directed by Schaffer and produced by Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins.
Neeson is not known for playing comedy — although Nielsen wasn’t either prior to his straight-faced “Don’t Call Me Shirley” turn in 1980’s “Airplane!” Neeson told ComingSoon.com last year that he needed to prove his comedic chops.

Fans of The Naked Gun are about to have a good year with the release of the full trailer for the new movie.
Akiva Schaffer helms the reboot feature that Paramount releases in theaters Aug. 1. Liam Neeson stars as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Police Squad legend Frank Drebin, played in the franchise’s previous projects by the late Leslie Nielsen. Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Kevin Durand, Danny Huston, Liza Koshy, Cody Runnels and Cch Pounder round out the cast.
The new Naked Gun sees Neeson leading Police Squad in their latest effort to save the world. A previously released teaser trailer references Nordberg, the role played in the original movies by O.J. Simpson.
In the latest trailer, Anderson’s character, Beth, tells Neeson, “I think someone murdered my brother.” She later misinterprets his offer when he tells her, “Please, take a chair.”

Hands where I can see them. All of them. It may have seemed like a terrible idea on paper, but the newest installment in The Naked Gun franchise is actually shaping up to look really funny. This was building once the teaser dropped in April, and now we have even more evidence, as the full trailer has arrived less than two months before the movie’s August release.
This time around, it’s the son of Lieutenant Frank Drebin (Liam Neeson) who is on the case, as he follows in his father’s footsteps (via hopscotch?) to carry on his legacy and leave one of his own. Joining Neeson will be Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Liz Koshy, Danny Huston, WWE superstar Cody Rhodes, rapper Busta Rhymes, and more.

Get ready to rock out with your Glock out. Liam Neeson's Frank Drebin Jr. is on the case in the first gag-filled trailer for The Naked Gun. The reboot of the slapstick comedy series will hit theaters on August 1, 2025. In the trailer, Drebin Jr. is the son of the franchise's original protagonist, Frank Drebin Sr., and he's just as violent, accident-prone, and generally ridiculous as his predecessor. Now, he's on the trail of a murderer, thanks to femme fatale Pamela Anderson, but that plot's just an excuse for a series of slapstick gags in the goofball spirit of the franchise.
As he crusades for justice, Drebin pokes fun at Neeson's tough-guy image, beating a man with his own severed arms, pulling his sidearm to get into a bathroom, and interrogating a suspect who did twenty years for "man's laughter." But his new case is no joke: if Drebin can't...

Even when they are released in theaters, some movies still end up falling through the cracks of the public consciousness. It is only inevitable that some would, therefore, experience the same fate on streaming. Netflix, in particular, has a library full of underseen, underrated movies, most of which are not as actively promoted to users by the streamer or its algorithm as others.
A lot of those films deserve to be on subscribers’ radars, even if they have so far flown under them, so here are seven great hidden gem movies streaming on Netflix in June.

Exclusive: Here’s a pairing you might not have seen coming.
In a highly competitive situation, involving offers from both studios and streamers, Netflix has landed the pitch for a two-hander action comedy to star A Minecraft Movie‘s Jason Momoa and SNL alum Andy Samberg.
We hear the currently untitled film is set in Momoa’s native Hawaii, though further details as to the plot are under wraps. Samberg’s Party Over Here and Momoa’s On The Roam will produce. The script will be written by a pair of highly decorated SNL alums: 11x Emmy nominee Rob Klein and eight-time nominee John Solomon. No word yet on who will direct.
Momoa is riding high on the success of A Minecraft Movie, the Warner Bros/Legendary film which secured the biggest opening ever for a video game adaptation, breathing life into the global box office with a worldwide gross exceeding $948 million.

Seth Meyers is a person who doesn’t seem to have trouble filling his time. He’s been the host of Late Night With Seth Meyers since early 2014. He co-hosts the podcasts Family Trips With The Meyers Brothers with, as you might guess, his brother Josh, and The Lonely Island With Seth Meyers Podcast with, as you might also guess, The Lonely Island. Yet a segment of the population can’t stop fantasy-casting him into the role of Saturday Night Live’s next showrunner.
The question of who would succeed creator Lorne Michaels in running SNL has long been a topic of idle speculation. But this year’s celebration of the show’s 50th season has cranked it up several notches, since Michaels himself told Gayle King, back in 2021, that if he...

The Lonely Island very much wanted everybody to look at them when they were on a boat. But at the Grammys? Forget it! When The Lonely Island earned a surprise Grammy nomination for 2009’s “I’m on a Boat”, they had one goal in mind: to lose.
On a recent episode of their namesake podcast with Seth Meyers, the Lonely Island trio of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone sat down to chat about “I’m on a Boat” competing for the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration Grammy, in which they were competing against the likes of Jay-Z, Beyoncé and T.I. As Schaffer put it, “I don’t know if anyone’s ever gone to the Grammys hoping to lose more. We were like, if we win, we can’t get on stage. We were only confident enough to go cause we were that sure that we were going to lose…...

Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer know that the Lonely Island’s rap Grammy nod for “I’m on a Boat” with T-Pain might have been a fluke.
On Monday, the trio reflected on their nomination during an episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, sharing that they apologized to T-Pain for not connecting after the song’s nomination, and admitted that the nod may have happened because they’re white boys.

It’s been a quiet year for Liam Neeson so far, but more than 10 years ago, he starred in an alien invasion film that’s climbing streaming charts. Neeson features alongside Alexander Skarsgård (Murderbot) and Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) in Battleship, the 2012 sci-fi thriller following a fleet of ships forced to battle an unknown enemy to stop them from destroying the planet. Battleship has been streaming on Prime Video for a while now, and although the film is due to exit the platform in 11 days, it has landed in the top 10, sitting at #6 at the time of writing. The film earned a “rotten” 35% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience-driven Popcornmeter also landed a poor 54%. It grossed $303 million at the box office on a $209 million budget.
Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote the script for Battleship, and Peter Berg stepped behind the camera to direct the film. The Hoeber...

The gang on The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast doesn’t mind mixing it up with listeners, especially when it comes to the mysteries of sitcom theme songs. Akiva Schaffer read one such musing last week from a loyal fan of the podcast: “Hi guys, big Frasier fan here. Part of the Crane Train. What part is sadder — the tossed salad or the scrambled eggs? Something to think about.”
The question made Andy Samberg philosophical: “I always imagine the scrambled eggs were left in the pan. It’s like the amount that didn’t get eaten.”
“Right,” agreed Jorma Taccone. “You’re too depressed to eat it.”
“They’re lonely and cold,” Samberg continued. “Whereas the tossed salads… I mean, they’re tossed. They’re exciting. They’re living their best.”
It’s always raining in Seattle, noted Taccone, who imagined rain out the window as the salad and eggs do their thing.

Over the years, Netflix has cultivated a reputation for providing a new lease of life to movies and shows that met with an unfortunate fate initially. While some actors get the second once, for Andy Samberg, the scope of a Netflix revival came twice.
After the streaming giant stood beside Samberg’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine since 2014, Netflix is now reviving the 46-year-old actor’s 2016 box-office disaster, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.
When the Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping was released in 2016, it made only $9.7 million after being made on a budget of $20 million. However, over time, the film has gained moderately positive reviews and is now eyeing a second life on Netflix.
Andy Samberg’s Popstar is coming to Netflix nine years after its release
Almost nine years after its initial theatrical release, Andy Samberg’s music comedy has come on Netflix, and the streaming service took to its social media to announce the news.

I’ve been writing a lot lately about my lengthy Zoom with The Naked Gun! and Airplane! creator David Zucker. Our interview was ostensibly set up to discuss his upcoming web series MasterCrash, a more-sincere-than-usual sendup of MasterClass, and to provide space for him to gripe about being left out of Seth MacFarlane and Akiva Schaffer’s new Naked Gun movie — a classic win-win media & PR collab! The residual impact has been how much I’ve since thought about parody, and how not everybody knows how to do it right.
Time will tell if MacFarlane and Schaffer’s take starring Liam Neeson as the new Lt. Frank Drebin, son of the old one (Leslie Nielsen), strikes the right tone. Considering the IP and talent attached — and even factoring in the talent not attached — Naked Gun (August 1, 2025) has a shot. The big Baltimore Ravens short film released this week, on the other hand,...
