And so, with the new The Naked Gun, a Leslie Nielsen impression is not on the cards. No, director Akiva Schaffer – one third of The Lonely Island – instead has entrusted Liam Neeson with lampooning the world of police procedurals; like Nielsen, much of career has been in serious roles, but with hints that a comic juggernaut is lying in wait.

Akiva Schaffer’s reboot of The Naked Gun has been winning over a lot of skeptical fans with its latest trailer — but the director of the original film has yet to be convinced.

David Zucker, who co-directed classics such as Airplane! and Top Secret!, has been very critical of the new movie, recently telling Fox News that “just being a fan” doesn’t qualify the filmmakers to take on the goofy franchise.

Part of Zucker’s dissatisfaction with the new project seemingly stems from the fact that Paramount previously turned down his pitches for potential franchise continuations. In a new interview with Film Threat, Zucker confirmed that one rejected sequel idea was a spy movie spoof called Naked: Impossible, which had been preceded by a more straightforward continuation dubbed Naked Gun 4: Nordberg Did It.

When news first broke that "The Naked Gun" was receiving a legacy sequel starring Liam Neeson, many of us shook our heads and criticized Hollywood for churning out yet another needless reboot. While the official trailer features a lot of the same footage and jokes from the teaser trailer, there are still plenty of new laughs to go around.

Admit it: it’s hard to imagine The Naked Gun without Leslie Nielsen, or the comedy stylings of filmmaking legends Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker. But worry not. The new sequel not only has Liam Neeson in deadpan comedy mode, one he rarely employs but has previously excelled in – see Life’s Too Short, or The Lego Movie – but also comes from The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer. Paramount Pictures has released the full trailer for its reboot of “The Naked Gun.”

The original 1988 film, “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!,” was based on the television comedy “Police Squad!,” which parodied police and crime shows. The movie, a box office hit, was followed by the sequels “The Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear” in 1991 and “Naked Gun 33 ⅓: The Final Insult” in 1994.

Liam Neeson leads as Frank Drebin, the investigator first portrayed by Leslie Nielsen. Paul Walter Hauser plays Captain Ed, previously played by Alan North and George Kennedy in the show and film franchise, respectively. Pamela Anderson plays the love interest, taking over Priscilla Presley’s film role. The cast also includes Danny Huston, Kevin Durand and Liza Koshy.

From the files of the Police Squad, “The Naked Gun” is back on August 1 in theaters everywhere — the rebooted Liam Neeson version that is. Paramount Pictures has released the theatrical trailer for the continuation of the series from which the similarly-named Leslie Nielsen mined box office gold.

In the new film, Neeson plays Lt. Frank Drebin, Jr., son of Nielsen’s Frank Drebin character. Along for the sure-to-be-wacky ride are Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Cch Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston. Written by Dan Gregor, Doug Maud, and Akiva Schaffer, the movie was directed by Schaffer and produced by Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins.

Neeson is not known for playing comedy — although Nielsen wasn’t either prior to his straight-faced “Don’t Call Me Shirley” turn in 1980’s “Airplane!” Neeson told ComingSoon.com last year that he needed to prove his comedic chops.

Fans of The Naked Gun are about to have a good year with the release of the full trailer for the new movie.

In a highly competitive situation, involving offers from both studios and streamers, Netflix has landed the pitch for a two-hander action comedy to star A Minecraft Movie‘s Jason Momoa and SNL alum Andy Samberg.

We hear the currently untitled film is set in Momoa’s native Hawaii, though further details as to the plot are under wraps. Samberg’s Party Over Here and Momoa’s On The Roam will produce. The script will be written by a pair of highly decorated SNL alums: 11x Emmy nominee Rob Klein and eight-time nominee John Solomon. No word yet on who will direct.

Battleship has been streaming on Prime Video for a while now, and although the film is due to exit the platform in 11 days, it has landed in the top 10, sitting at #6 at the time of writing. The film earned a “rotten” 35% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience-driven Popcornmeter also landed a poor 54%. It grossed $303 million at the box office on a $209 million budget.

The gang on The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast doesn’t mind mixing it up with listeners, especially when it comes to the mysteries of sitcom theme songs. Akiva Schaffer read one such musing last week from a loyal fan of the podcast: “Hi guys, big Frasier fan here. Part of the Crane Train. What part is sadder — the tossed salad or the scrambled eggs? Something to think about.”

The question made Andy Samberg philosophical: “I always imagine the scrambled eggs were left in the pan. It’s like the amount that didn’t get eaten.”
