Ryan Reynolds, known for his sharp wit and undeniable charm, is a master at pushing boundaries, both on screen and off. While he might seem daring as Merc with a Mouth, the truth is, behind the scenes, he’s far more relatable — full of nerves just like the rest of us.
Yep, don’t be fooled by his fearless Deadpool persona because he had a personal fright that he later managed to overcome. So, how’d Reynolds beat that? It all started with his first superhero role — and if you think it was Deadpool, then nope!
It was his often-forgotten turn as Green Lantern. But saving the universe wasn’t the only thing it helped with. That gig actually helped him tackle that pretty personal fear: flying!

And if that wasn’t enough, it also led him to find the love of his life.

What Challenges Did Ryan Reynolds Face While Filming Buried? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Ryan Reynolds in a coffin for 95 minutes? Sounds like a setup for a Deadpool joke—but Buried was no laughing matter. Back in 2010, the Hollywood funnyman faced one of his darkest fears—claustrophobia—in a role that left him gasping for air, literally and emotionally.
The thriller Buried, directed by Rodrigo Cortés, dropped Reynolds into a wooden coffin as Paul Conroy, an American truck driver in Iraq who wakes up buried alive. Armed with just a lighter, a cell phone, and some profound desperation, Paul tries to outsmart his captors and find a way out. Now, imagine shooting all that inside an actual coffin. Reynolds didn’t just act; he endured.
“Claustrophobia is a primal fear that exists within everybody. For me, I was enclosed in there and had moments of utter panic,” Ryan Reynolds admitted to The Standard.

Ryan Reynolds is having one hell of a summer and year thanks to the incredible success of Deadpool & Wolverine, which brought the character effortlessly into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and cleared a billion dollars (and counting) in the process. The film plays to the strengths that many know the actor for: his comedic timing and witty banter, which has become his signature, but Reynolds is capable of much more.
In 2010, the actor appeared in the survival thriller Buried, a rare dramatic outing for the performer that showcased his range beyond telling a quick joke. For 95 minutes, the audience is stuck in a claustrophobic space with Reynolds, and he has to solely sell the viewer on his growing despair in an impossible situation. It's a film that didn't make a huge...

Warning! Contains spoilers for Heart of Stone! The Heart of Stone cast boasts a star-studded ensemble, led by Gal Gadot and a host of other recognizable names. The Netflix spy thriller is directed by Tom Harper (Peaky Blinders) and penned by Greg Rucka (DC Comics' Batman: No Man's Land) and Allison Schroeder (Hidden Figures). Heart of Stone concerns an international intelligence agent who must keep a top-secret item from falling into enemy hands. With Gadot's international fame and an exciting entry in the spy genre, Netflix likely hopes to launch a franchise with some of the Heart of Stone cast returning.
The casting of Gal Gadot alone was enough to put Heart of Stone on the map, and the Israeli actor has proven herself to be a box office draw in other action films. While Netflix's model doesn't rely on ticket sales, high-profile films like Heart of Stone are what...

You may know Ryan Reynolds best for his comedic roles, especially in the wildly popular Deadpool franchise. And while he may have gotten his start in hilarious films like National Lampoon’s Van Wilder and Waiting…, he’s also no stranger to more dramatic material.
Movies like Safe House and Life have shown his ability to step outside humor and drive home a more serious performance. And though his filmography is packed to the brim with both styles, one of his very best appearances on screen happened in a movie that drove many claustrophobic audiences out of the theater. Lucky for you, though, you can watch it in your own home on Hulu as of next week.

Stars: Rosamund Pike, Jamie Dornan, Stanley Tucci, Tom Hollander, Greg Wise, Alexandra Moen, Faye Marsay | Written by Arash Amel | Directed by Matthew Heineman
A Private War is directed by Matthew Heineman and stars Rosamund Pike as famed wartime correspondent journalist Marie Colvin, capturing her life from 1986 until her death in Homs Syria at the hands of the regime she was fighting against to highlight the atrocities they were undertaking. Heineman’s film is a deeply disturbing account of the atrocities against civilians in Syria and the human spirit that continues to fight it on the battlefield, and in the media, with an outstanding central performance from Rosamund Pike.
Pike here is off the charts superb. The total complete utter embodiment of her real-life character Colvin is realised in such a detailed and pragmatic manner, you’re left in a state of awe witnessing such a dedicated performance. It never conveys...

While many junkets seek to entertain, with fun-filled questions and answers between outlet and talent, sometimes they can be quite solemn affairs, and in the case of A Private War – a biopic of the late war reporter Marie Colvin – it was entirely understandable be the case, as we sat down with the lead two roles Rosamund Pike and Jamie Dornan to discuss this delicate subject matter.
Pike is evidently someone who completely gives herself to the role at hand, and in this instance she knew she had to do justice to the life of the subject, as she explains how she went about bringing this woman to life on screen. Dornan, who plays photographer Paul Conroy, was able to meet and speak to the man he was embodying and he touches upon that, while we ask Pike what she would have asked Colvin if she were still alive.

This portrait of Marie Colvin, the daring journalist with an eyepatch, captures her badass image but stops short of revealing the woman behind the myth
This film arrives at an interesting moment. A Us court has just found Bashar Al-Assad’s Syrian government guilty of the extra-judicial killing of Sunday Times war correspondent Marie Colvin in Homs in 2012. She was in the building that the Syrian authorities shelled – courageously denouncing their cynicism and brutality to the very end. Now Colvin is the subject of this movie, a legendary figure who affected an eyepatch after losing an eye to shrapnel in Sri Lanka in 2001. After her death, she was in increasing danger of being mythologised. There was a Colvin figure in Eva Husson’s Girls of the Sun – a daring female reporter with an eyepatch.

Some worry that mobile phones, by abolishing isolation and jeopardy, are killing off the modern thriller, or at least slowing it down with the obligatory, laborious dialogue: "No signal!" – "Whaddaya mean no signal?" – "I mean I can't get a signal!" etc. Well, here's a new thriller that couldn't have existed in the pre-cellphone age. This extraordinary high-concept, high-anxiety, low-budget nightmare from Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés is guaranteed to give everyone suffering claustrophobia a permanent nervous breakdown. In fact, it's guaranteed to give everyone permanent claustrophobia. Ryan Reynolds stars as Paul Conroy, an ordinary guy who wakes up as the film starts, after some long, long seconds of total blackness, buried alive in a wooden coffin. And that is where he and we stay for the entire film:...
