BET Media Group confirmed Wednesday that it will cut an unspecified number of positions—mostly in linear research, finance and business-legal affairs—as parent Paramount Global trims 3.5 % of its U.S. workforce.

A memo from chief executive Scott Mills said the network is shifting to a “streamlined organization structure” that leans on Paramount’s centralized support functions while keeping programming, marketing and streaming teams intact.

His message arrived two weeks after Paramount’s three co-CEOs warned staff that hundreds of jobs would be shed amid steep linear-tv declines and the need to steer capital toward streaming.

In that earlier note, George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins called the cuts “hard, but necessary,” language Mills echoed in thanking departing colleagues for their “enduring contributions to BET’s legacy.”

The company already eliminated roughly 15 % of its U.S. headcount last year, making this the second major downsizing in 12 months.

The job cuts will impact staffers “in areas including linear research, finance, and business and legal affairs,” according to the memo, as seen by TheWrap.

Starting Wednesday, the network will be implementing “a streamlined organization structure” utilizing its existing teams within the content strategy and production, programming, marketing and insights, social impact, advertising sales, streaming and digital departments.

Earlier this month, Paramount co-CEOs George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins told staff they would be “prioritizing investments in our growing streaming business” by reducing their U.S. workforce by 3.5%, which would impact hundreds of employees. BET is cutting jobs as part of a streamlining of its organization under a recently unveiled 3.5 percent reduction of the domestic workforce at its parent company Paramount Global as the conglomerate awaits FCC approval of Skydance Media’s deal to acquire it.

”BET is not immune to the conditions necessitating these actions, so we too must reduce staff within our organization,” BET Media Group president and CEO Scott Mills said in a Wednesday staff memo obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

He didn’t immediately detail the number of layoffs or their financial impact. In its previous announcement, Paramount said the cuts will amount to several hundred U.S. employees across its business.

“We will further leverage Paramount’s scaled support functions in areas including linear research, finance, and business and legal affairs,” Mills highlighted in signaling what areas will be most affected.

Leading podcast agency, Listen has announced two new visualised podcasts at the Edinburgh Television Festival: the return of the official companion podcast The Traitors: Uncloaked, and a music podcast from Scott Mills and Rylan for BBC Sounds and BBC iPlayer, Pop Top Ten.

On stage at the festival on a panel produced by Listen about the increasingly blurred lines between TV and podcasts, Listen’s Director of Content, Darby Dorras and BBC Commissioning Editor, Neil McCallum announced that The Traitors: Uncloaked will return alongside the new series of The Traitors. It will be hosted again by comedian Ed Gamble, and this series will feature 12 episodes, instead of the previous 10, like-for-like with the main show’s episodes.

As a visualised podcast with an exclusive extended audio-only cut for BBC Sounds, The Traitors: Uncloaked was a brand-new take on a companion show. The podcast launched in January this year and drew huge audiences.

Huw Edwards took home his biggest pay packet since 2019 during his final year at the BBC, despite the newsreader being off-air for eight months amid a misconduct scandal.

The BBC’s annual report revealed that Edwards was paid as much as £480,000 in the 12 months to the end of March 2024, his highest salary since 2019, when he pocketed up to £495,000.

Edwards signed a new BBC deal early last year and presented coverage of King Charles III’s Coronation, which will explain why his pay rose around £40,000 compared with the £440,000 he took home in 2023.

At the peak of his powers, however, he was embroiled in a misconduct storm after allegedly paying a young person for indecent images and sending colleagues inappropriate messages. Edwards was signed off work in July 2023 with mental health issues and resigned from the BBC in April citing medical reasons. He has not commented on the allegations against him.

The Paley Center for Media announced Wednesday that it will honor Tyler Perry at its Paley Honors gala, taking place in Beverly Hills on Dec. 4.

The event, which will be held at the Beverly Wilshire hotel, will serve as a celebration of Perry’s long and versatile career as an actor, writer, director, producer, studio owner and philanthropist. He has produced over 2,000 episodes of television and directed, written and produced 28 feature films; since 2019, Perry has also operated his Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.

The Paley Center has convened some of Perry’s closest friends and colleagues as part of its Paley Honors Tribute Host Committee, including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle; Perry is godfather to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s daughter, Lilibet, after offering up his house to the couple following their contentious exit from the royal family.

A new age is dawning for Paramount Global. The company has agreed to terms on a complex merger deal with Skydance Media, and is considering the best ways to streamline operations as it seeks $2 billion in cost savings. Paramount executives were on the hunt for savings before the Skydance deal won official approval from the company’s higher-ups, and have engaged with outside buyers about a number of its assets. A new report from Streaming Media Blog states that one of those assets is the free, ad-supported streaming service Pluto TV, which Paramount has discussed selling back to its co-founder Tom Ryan.

Tyler Perry is steering into the Fast lane. The mega producer is launching multiple Fast channels as part of its ongoing relationship with BET.

Perry’s library of BET series will be scheduled on the new just-launched channels BET Tyler Perry Comedy and BET Tyler Perry Drama, marking the first time Perry’s BET series have been made available on Fast channels. The outlets are set to launch on Fast platforms including Roku, Pluto TV, Plex, Tcl, Freevee and more to come.

Tyler Perry is showing his support for the Hollywood studio marriage of David Ellison’s Skydance Media with Paramount Global. The reported $8 billion deal will see Ellison become chairman and CEO of a boosted Paramount while former NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell will serve as president.

When asked on the red carpet at the New York premiere for his latest film “Divorce in the Black” if he had been talking to Paramount about the updates, Perry told Variety he already had a conversation about the recent turn of events: “They haven’t reached out as much as I have reached out to them to say I’m really excited about this next chapter.”
