“Ida ne mana liya!” — How Imtiaz Ali Landed a Sweet Cameo in Metro…In Dino, Thanks to His Daughter
Image
Anurag Basu’s Metro…In Dino has finally made its way to theaters, and it’s already winning hearts with its fresh storytelling, light-hearted humor, and that perfect mix of emotion and music. As the film continues to enchant audiences, Basu took a moment to share some fun behind-the-scenes stories—including how he managed to get filmmaker Imtiaz Ali to make a brief yet heartwarming cameo.

When asked how he convinced someone like Imtiaz, who’s known for being a bit camera-shy, Basu chuckled, “I didn’t have to do much. I just asked his daughter Ida to talk him into it. And guess what? She did! Imtiaz usually steers clear of the spotlight, but he made an exception this time. He really nailed it, too.”

The director himself also makes an appearance in the film—another delightful surprise for fans. It turns out, it was a bit of playful banter with music maestro Pritam.

Yes finally, it’s been a long wait but it’s all worth it. It’s a dream to be working with Imtiaz sir.

How did Imtiaz Ali come into your picture?

I had a meeting with him a long time ago after my debut series The Archies had released. We just had a nice chat in general. Almost a year or year-and-a-half later we met again and he discussed the idea for this story. I was very excited.

Have you seen Imtiaz Ali’s films?

I’ve seen all his films barring his first Socha Na Tha. Rockstar and Chamkila are probably my favourite. But Jab We Met, Tamasha, all classics. He understands human emotions and dilemma like no other,...

Bulbbul Clocks 5 Years! Looking Back at Triptii Dimri’s Dynamic Screen Power
Image
Triptii Dimri rose to prominence with her unpredictable role in the critically acclaimed film, Bulbbul. The film, released on Netflix in 2020, was a horror drama that delved into the tales of a supernatural woman in the forest killing men in the night. Additionally, it also follows the story of a child bride and her journey from innocence to freedom. And today, Bulbbul completes five successful years and continues to connect with movie buffs for its empowering story that also blends horror and mystery.

Though Triptii Dimri became a famous face with Animal, she found Bulbbul to be more challenging than the action drama. With a film that was not everyday cinema, Triptii Dimri portrayed the emotional complexities of loss of love, life, and also pulled off scenes by showing the destructive power of female rage. She shared the screen space with the known actor, Rahul Bose, and had earlier revealed...

On Imtiaz Ali’s 54th Birthday Revisiting His First & Latest Films
Image
Imtiaz Ali’s debut Socha Na Tha released on 4 March, 2005 offers the comfort of muted mobility. Much of the movement afforded to this slight concoction of urban chic is self-serving and finally futile. But it’s fun while it lasts.Except for the occasional vulgarity, the dialogues by Ishan Trivedi are supple and tongue-in-cheek. But like much of what goes into the plot, the words are finally more emblems of contemporary connectivity than real people caught in situations of real interaction. Whether it’s the hero breaking into a jig at a traffic jam or the heroine making a face in the mirror, you know these youngsters are getting cute for the camera.

The whole ambience exudes a kind of enthusiastic youthful energy that Farhan Akhtar conceptualised for his trend-setting urban fable Dil Chahta Hai. In fact, the film’s theme of a don’t-care-a-damn dude’s falling in love...

Metro…In Dino Zamaana Lage Song Review: It Is Bittersweet! (Photo Credit – YouTube)

In the last few years, whenever I have lost hope in Bollywood and its music, some names have helped me restore my faith in it, Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Basu films clearly top the list. I clearly remember Basu Dada doing all of us a favor by gifting us some brilliant music album by Pritam during the Covid Era with Ludo’s album, and now he is making me accept some more gems with his upcoming film Metro…In Dino.

The first song from the film is out and it is titled Zamaana Lage! While it clearly does not make sense as a title, I have a bitter sweet feeling hearing the track as well! I happy yet sad listening to some of my favorite lines being presented as a fusion and extension and a cover version!

Rewinding To The Fare On Ott In April 2025
Image
There was a lot of activity on the streaming platform in April, not much of it of any validity beyond the immediate, let alone staying power. Most of all, April 2025 would be remembered as the month when Netflix India hit the rock bottom of creativity with Jewel Thief, a film so inexcusably awful it would take analysts years to unravel its layers of mediocrity.

A question Netflix should be asking is, how did something so putrid get approved? Producers and actors with clout should think before committing themselves to such crimes of creativity. Remember, if you think only of the zeroes on the cheque, you soon end up as a zero.

Amazon’s Test, though a masterpiece compared with Jewel Thief, was more a test of our patience. A potentially promising plot squandered in vapid direction.

Amit Golani’s Logout was a better product than the other Ott feature films in April,...

We do the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, which has a very popular Short Film competition. Over the years, we have had wonderful winners from South Asian communities, yet never saw them of their work in the mainstream Australian screen space. Most of them told me about the lack of representation and inability to be authentic in the stories that they wanted to tell. I was discussing this with Onir and we came up with the idea where he would mentor emerging creatives from underrepresented backgrounds and create a short film. Diljit Dosanjh has won hearts as Amar Singh Chamkila, but did you know he wasn’t the only actor in the running for the role? Actor Paramvir Singh Cheema was among the four finalists considered for the lead in Imtiaz Ali’s directorial.

In a recent interview, Cheema revealed that casting director Mukesh Chhabra had asked him to block his dates as he was one of the top contenders. The actor had successfully cleared three rounds of auditions and was being seriously considered. However, around the same time, he received another offer that made him reconsider his decision.

During the exclusive conversation with Screen (Via Pinkvilla), Paramvir said, “I auditioned for the main character in Chamkila. I cleared the first three rounds. Just before the final round, Mukesh Chhabra called us four people and said, ‘One of you is going to be Amar Singh Chamkila,...

Exclusive: Director Shivam Nair On Making The Diplomat, His Future Projects & Key To Good Audience Response: “Bindaas Hokey Give Them Variety”
Image
Check Out Our Exclusive Interview With The Diplomat Director Shivam Nair! (Photo Credit – YouTube)

The Diplomat director Shivam Nair shot to fame with the television serial Sea Hawks in the late 1990s. Like many directors who came from the small screen, including his close friends Neeraj Pandey, Sriram Raghavan, Imtiaz Ali, and Anurag Kashyap, Shivam took a while to make it to the big screen but has since made a distinct name for himself.

Ahista Ahista (2006) was his debut film, followed by the brilliant Maharathi (2008), produced by Paresh Rawal and based on a Gujarati play. The film did not perform well, primarily because it was released in the 26/11 week, and it took Shivam seven years to make his next, Bhaag Johnny, his first for T-Series.

Shivam Nair’s old friend, Neeraj, then called him to direct his spin on Baby, the 2017 Naam Shabana, after which they co-directed Special Ops, among...

Alia Bhatt on the career-defining Highway
Image
We take you back to Alia Bhatt’s brilliant performance in Highway. Subhash K Jha shares a fantastic interview with Alia from when the drama, directed by Imtiaz Ali, was released in 2014.

Suddenly, 2013 had a new female star. Mahesh Bhatt and Soni Razdan’s youngest-born, Alia Bhatt, has gone from the baby from the family to the babe of Bollywood in no time at all. Alia laughed, “It has been a pretty tumultuous year for me. Yes, it was a decisive year. It was a year that I’d remember mainly for shooting Highway.”

Alia says Highway put her life into a perspective. “It helped me to connect with the person within me. My father (filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt) always said the day an actor finds oneness with the person within is the day he or she becomes a true actor. I think I found that person during Highway. I don...

My Melbourne (2024)
My Melbourne (2024) ‘Gaff’ Movie Review: Powerful Journeys of Self-Discovery and Belonging
My Melbourne (2024)
“My Melbourne” (2024) is a unique Indo-Australian collaboration where Indian filmmakers, namely, Onir, Imtiaz Ali, Rima Das, and Kabir Khan, team up with local talents in Melbourne to tell four stories about race, gender, sexuality and disability. Based on true migrant experiences, the anthology of four shorts features tales of displacement, discrimination, inequality, alienation, and estrangement of four individuals grounded by unique situations in Melbourne but bound together by similar aspirations and themes. Reflecting on South Asian realities, the film provides the platform to showcase a few unsaid stories and represent some of the underrepresented voices in the Australian city of Melbourne that resonate globally.

With “My Melbourne” (2024), each filmmaker directs a prime display of their auteurship by doing what they do best. Rima Das directs “Emma” which tells the story of a talented deaf dancer in pursuit of acceptance while overcoming discrimination. “Jules” by Imtiaz Ali is a story of self-discovery,...

‘Dhoom Dhaam’ Movie Review: Neither The Jokes Nor The Cast Can Save This Preachy Punchline-Heavy Mess
Image
Can it be called a story of ‘lovers-on-the-run’ if we don’t have an authority-defying couple at the heart of the drama, and if it only involves a minor lie on their part to secure a chicken curry dinner? Perhaps a question I’ll be mulling over for some time. However, the same cannot be my guarantee about the new Netflix film Dhoom Dhaam. Primarily, the microgenre of “lovers-on-the-run” deals with a couple who has left a trail of crime in their wake and is now on the run. They are conspicuously anti-establishment, raging outlaws, and eternally doomed. Dhoom Dhaam does not live up to the glory of this cinematic wonder. The couple is on the run but desperately waits for the police to turn up, only to discover their larger ploy. In Dhoom Dhaam, the drama that unfolds largely spans over a single night and a little part of the day.

Shah Rukh Khan, John Abraham, and Deepika Padukone in Pathaan (2023)
The 10 Best Hindi Movies of 2024
Shah Rukh Khan, John Abraham, and Deepika Padukone in Pathaan (2023)
2024 for Hindi movies was like a kickback to the countless number of Box-office turners we got last year. After the sheer storm that movies like Pathaan, Jawan, Animal, and Gadar 2 brought out at the Box Office (their questionable quality aside), 2024 turned out to be a year where Hindi cinema got its mojo back – in particular the little gems that often go unnoticed.

Sure there was the usual pile of absolute garbage across all fronts and genres, but this year could be seen as a slightly better outing for Bollywood. Thanks in large part to some small-budgeted fares that had minor ambitions and even minor Box office runs. However, for those of us who like to go out of our way to get to the core of such movies, it was a good time.

In the following list, I’d like to point out those movies that were competently made,...
