It feels just like yesterday when Disney announced that a fifth Descendants movie was in the works, and now, the studio has announced that the movie has taken a major step on our screens. And while it feels like time flew, we didn't travel through time. Production on the movie began in April, and fast-forward to about two months later, filming has now wrapped. The update was announced in a video posted on the official Disney Instagram account.
The video features franchise stars Kylie Cantrall and Malia Baker dressed as themselves in the present day. Get ready for a return to Auradon as we’re getting a new Descendants movie!
If there’s one thing Disney Channel knows how to do, it’s franchise a movie hit. It’s been done since High School Musical became a monster success in 2006 and still continues today. When said film is a musical, it can be even bigger.
That was the case with Descendants, the 2015 film that reimagined the classic Disney villains. The plot had the bad guys sent to an island by the heroes. The children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar and Cruella De Vil were sent to an academy as part of a peace process.
At first baddies, the kids soon grew to enjoy being good guys to turn on their families. The film was a success that inspired two sequels and an animated series.
In 2024, the property was revived in Descendants: The Rise of Red.

New descendants to the Disney Branded Television franchise include actor-singer Liamani Segura (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) as Red’s sister Pink; Brendon Tremblay (Altar) as Maddox Hatter’s son, Max Hatter; Alexandro Byrd (The Legend of Juan Jose Mundo) as Luisa Madrigal’s son Luis Madrigal; and Kiara Romero as Captain Hook’s daughter Hazel Hook.
Picking up shortly after the events of the 2024 film Descendants: The Rise of Red, the yet-untitled next chapter explores what “happily ever after” is really like for Red and Chloe following their return from their time-traveling adventures and delves into the warning at the end of The Rise of Red, “There are consequences when you alter the fabric of time.”
Kimmy Gatewood (The Baby-sitter’s Club) is set to direct from a script by co-executive producer Tamara Chestna (Sneakerella) and Dan Frey and Ru Sommer (Descendants: The Rise of Red). Returning to the franchise are executive producers Suzanne Todd and Gary Marsh. Gatewood also serves as co-producer. Emmy-winning choreographer Emilio Dosal is joining Descendants for the next movie.
“The love for the Descendants franchise runs deep, and the incredible response to Descendants: The Rise of Red last year proved just how much fans are invested in these characters and their stories,” said Ayo Davis, president, Disney Branded Television. “Our next movie will build on that legacy and deliver even more of the magic, music and heart that make Descendants so special — brought to life by an amazing cast and creative team who continue to elevate this world in new and exciting ways.”
Each premiere telecast of the first three Descendants movies ranks as the most-watched cable movie of the year among Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14. The latest installment, Descendants: The Rise of Red, debuted on Disney+ in July and was last year’s most watched original movie across all streaming among Kids 6-11 and Girls 6-11.
