'We Weren't Supposed to Do That': Avatar: The Last Airbender Creators Reveal the Nickelodeon Rule They Broke for Legend of Korra
Image
Original Avatar: The Last Airbender creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko recently revealed that to give their show's animated follow-up, The Legend of Korra, a more cinematic feel, they did something they were "explicitly being told not to do" by the studio.

The duo rendered the series in HD widescreen despite being told not to -- a decision that accidentally put the network ahead of the entire industry. Dimartino and Konietzko shared the behind-the-scenes story during a recent episode of Braving the Elements -- the official retrospective podcast hosted by Janet Varney and Dante Basco, explaining how studio executive Mark Taylor greenlit the HD format upgrade against Nickelodeon's wishes.

Nickelodeon Originally Said No to Avatar's Legend of Korra in HD

"We weren't supposed to do that," Konietzko admitted during the podcast discussion. The creators first pushed for HD during Avatar's series finale but faced resistance. "Nickelodeon, with...

17 Years Later, I Still Feel Katara Should’ve Ended Up With Zuko Instead of Aang for a Good Reason
Image
The canon of Avatar: The Last Airbender makes a very potent cast for Zuko and Katara ending up together. While these characters ended up taking completely different paths in their lives, it is easy to spot that even subtextually, the narrative was always primed to serve a relationship between The Blue Spirit and the Painted Lady.

A slew of cast and crew members of Avatar: The Last Airbender believed that there was some merit in keeping Zuko and Katara together, and there have been some conflicting statements about the nature of how the relationship might have been in the cards, to be part of the official narrative. Whether it was or not is a different matter, because in terms of the flow of narrative, it makes complete sense that Zuko and Katara should have ended up together.

The narrative itself seemed to be a Zuko/Katara shipper.. Katara and Zuko...

The New Avatar Series Needs To Address ‘The Legend of Korra’s Greatest Tragedy
Image
The world of Avatar: The Last Airbenderis rich and constantly expanding. After Aang's (Zach Tyler Eisen) story concluded, the beloved series got a sequel, The Legend of Korra, which explored the next incarnation of the Avatar, Korra (Janet Varney). And the universe is set to expand once again with the announcement of a new series focusing on the Earthbender following Korra. Though little is known about the upcoming series, Avatar: Seven Havens, it promises a very different world for the next Avatar. Set in a "world shattered by a devastating cataclysm" where the Avatar is not regarded as the hero it once was, the new series will be unique, much like The Legend of Korra's 1920s-inspired city set it apart from its predecessor.

Who Does Korra End Up With In The Avatar Universe?
Image
The 2010s and 2020s saw a surge of American children's media that put queerness front and center. Take the work of N.D. Stevenson, such as the Netflix series "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" and the animated film "Nimona," based on his graphic novel. From "Steven Universe" to "The Owl House," cartoons have gotten a lot gayer in the last decade.

And it is almost precisely a decade because Nickelodeon's "The Legend of Korra" is the show that broke down the dam in 2014. In the show's fourth and final season, Avatar Korra (Janet Varney) falls in love with her best friend, Asami Sato (Seychelle Gabriel). A sequel to "Avatar: The Last Airbender," "The Legend of Korra" is set in a fantasy world where people can bend one of the four elements. Korra, as the reincarnation of world defender the Avatar, can bend all four. If kids can accept a world that fantastical,...

The 30 Best Anime Trios Of All Time, Ranked
Image
When two Japanese anime characters form a duo, those characters either complete one another or challenge each other, and there is always a sense of co-dependency. In a trio, however, there are ongoing tensions, a strong sense of competition, and rivalry that can also become jealousy, making the whole group much more interesting. However, many of the most iconic trios, such as Jesse, James and Meowth and Winry, Alphonse and Edward, have an underlying current of true care.

There are many iconic trios in the anime world, some composed entirely of villains, others of heroes, and some a mix of the two. Some trios are strong and determined main characters; others feature shy and quiet protagonists; still others are made of remarkable side characters. All these trios have one thing in common: they make the story unique and truly memorable.

Updated on February 10, 2025, by Natasha Elder: Anime trios are commonplace...

10 Years Later, The Legend Of Korra Is A Great Show – But One Part Has Aged Worse Than Ever
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

"The Legend of Korra" concluded its fourth and final season 10 years ago today. It's not as universally loved a series as its predecessor, "Avatar: The Last Airbender," which is often held as a crowning achievement of American children's animation and epic fantasy. With those big shoes, "The Legend of Korra" was never going to completely fill them, but it still has great episodes and many fans — I'm one of them.

The show's greatest legacy is and will probably continue to be how it pushed boundaries for LGBTQ+ representation. Previously, out queer characters were verboten in America children's media, but "Korra" went as far as it could in Book 4, when Korra (Janet Varney) falls in love with her friend Asami Sato (Seychelle Gabriel). The series ends with them holding hands and staring into each other's eyes; you get the feeling that...

Tlok: Ranking Korra’s Best Relationships
Image
The Legend of Korra, a spin-off to Avatar: The Last Airbender, started in the Southern Water Tribe, where the current Avatar, Korra (voiced by Janet Varney), lived in relative seclusion. Korra felt cooped up in her native home and had only a handful of friends, but things shifted when she visited the metropolis of Republic City. It didn't take long for Korra to build a network of friends, teammates, and other connections who helped define her Avatar career.

For every enemy she made, such as Amon or Tarrlok, Korra made a friend who vowed to support her in her fight to maintain balance in the world, some becoming members of Team Avatar. By the story's end, Korra had many varied relationships. These are the most heartfelt, healthiest, and important ones. Even when personalities and philosophies clashed, loyalty remained, which created scenarios both entertaining and moving, now living on in the comics.

Avatar: The Last Airbender's Wildest Crack Pairings
Image
Animated series like Avatar: The Last Airbender will always encourage fans to exercise their imagination and picture all-new fights or scenarios. What-if is always fun with series like Avatar, and that includes romance, too. There are a few canon romantic pairings, and some solid what-ifs such as Sokka and Princess Yue. Meanwhile, some fans like to think up truly bizarre pairings that the rest of the fandom rejects.

Every fan is free to imagine whatever romantic pairing they like, but their pet pairings/ships probably won't impress the other Avatar viewers, and such pairings can lead to strange or even uncomfortable fan art or fanfiction. Even when "what if?" is the rule, some romantic ships just don't add up, such as if the two characters have zero compatability or if their imagined romance is downright unhealthy or problematic in some way.

In the first episode of Season 3, Azula gives credit to Zuko for taking down Aang when they met their father Fire Lord Ozai.

Avatar director Giancarlo Volpe revealed that it was Azula’s evil plan that motivated her to give Zuko the credit. Volpe shared that Azula was actually passing the blame as she knew about the possibility that Aang may reemerge after getting healed by Katara.

The Legend of Korra: Inability To Access Past Avatars Means Korra Is Stronger Than Fans Think
Image
Korra's severed connection to past avatars in the second season showcased her true strength as the Avatar. Comparison with Aang highlights Korra's unique journey and displays her independence and raw power. Saving Kuvira without past Avatar guidance proves that Korra's greatest power came from within herself.

For years, fans of the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe have debated whether the lead protagonist of the show’s successor series, The Legend of Korra, was worthy of taking up the mantle of the Avatar. More importantly, could her power measure up to that of the Avatar before her? Discourse between fans of either show has persisted surrounding the age-old question: who was the more powerful Avatar?

It’s fair to say that Korra struggled to find her place and forge her path. And yet, there are several key factors that are often overlooked when coming to a conclusion about which of the...

“I have to be prepared for the possibility”: Azula’s Real Reason Behind Letting Zuko Take the Credit for Killing Aang Makes Her the Best Avatar: The Last Airbender Villain
Image
Princess Azula, the daughter of Firelord Ozai, is undoubtedly one of the strongest female characters in the show, making her one of the cruelest antagonists in Avatar the Last Airbender. Known for being the only firebender capable of creating blue flames, she is intelligent, cruel, and always one step ahead of everyone, and nothing displays it better than the opening episode of Season 3.

While she succeeds in almost killing Aang, the firebender refuses to take the credit when meeting her father, and the motivations behind this decision further cement her as one of the best villains.

In an extensive Entertainment Weekly profile on the adaptation's development, the Avatar Aang actor revealed that Avatar will finally show fans the Fire Nation's attack on the Air Nomads in the early days of the Hundred Year War. "I think the airbender genocide is really cool… Well, no! No! Not like that," Cormier semi-jokingly claimed about this historical tragedy the cartoon frequently mentioned but refrained from showing in the past. Cormier also teased some impressive Airbending visuals during this scene, adding "I mean, yeah, my whole family's dead, of course. It's not a good thing, but watching it is going to be sick!"

“I Gave This A Lot Of Thought”: Why Azula Gives Up Credit For Killing Aang Explained By Atla Director
Image
According to the Avatar: The Last Airbender director, Azula strategically gave Zuko credit for striking down Aang to save herself from blame if Aang were to reemerge healed and seek revenge. Azula's decision was motivated by her knowledge of waterbending healing abilities and seeing Katara aid Aang. By attributing the strike to Zuko, Azula could pass the blame onto him and maintain her reputation even if Aang survived.

Avatar: The Last Airbender director Giancarlo Volpe explains what motivated Azula (Grey DeLisle) to give Zuko (Dante Basco) credit for striking down Aang (Zach Taylor Eisen) in season 3's opening episode. The season 2 finale, "The Crossroads of Destiny", saw Team Avatar caught amid the Earth Kingdom coup, leading to surprise alliances and betrayals. While Aang finally achieved the Avatar State, a lightning strike by Azula struck him down, nearly leading to his demise had Iroh (Mako Iwamatsu) not given the group a...

Third Eye is a love letter to the fantasy genre set in present-day San Francisco. Felicia Day Brings Her Story “Third Eye” To Sdcc
Image
Writer and Actress Felicia Day stopped by San Diego Comic-Con along with some of her cast from her new story “Third Eye.” Day is the creator and star of the web series The Guild (2007–2013), a show loosely based on her life as a gamer. As an actress, Day has played Vi in the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2003) and Dr. Holly Marten in Eureka (2011) and had a recurring role as Charlie Bradbury on Supernatural (2012–2015, 2018–2020).

According to Audible, “Third Eye” is about the magical land of San Francisco, there lived a not-so-ordinary girl named Laurel Pettigrew. She was supposed to be the Chosen One. The plan was simple: She would vanquish the great evil Tybus in an epic battle. But destiny had other ideas, and Laurel’s performance in the whole heroics department was a colossal flop.

Now, instead of being a legendary hero, Laurel’s the resident pariah of the magic realm.

‘Platonic’ Proves That Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen Can Be Too Good Together
Image
As a team, Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen by themselves could will anything to watchability. If anything, the new Apple TV+ show “Platonic” is a showcase for the things that each of them are unspeakably good at doing. Byrne is a physical comedy sorceress, turning everything from the process of getting ready in the morning to being repulsed by reptiles into its own distinct kind of laugh. Rogen paints with rants and references like a gravelly voiced watercolorist, rattling off reasons to be upset or angry like he’s capturing a Parisian countryside.

Spending years apart after a falling out, Will’s crumbling marriage gives Sylvia a chance to catch up. No ulterior motive, just a chance for two close friends to not be completely banished from each other’s lives. A rocky restart gradually gives way to more and more reminders of the fun of years past and soon,...

Who The Boulder Voice Actor Is In Avatar: The Last Airbender
Image
The earthbending wrestler known as The Boulder is among the most memorable minor characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender, due in part to the striking, energetic performance of his voice actor. The Boulder was heavily inspired by the wrestling persona of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. This is reflected in the name, the character's look, the inflections of the voice performance, and his penchant for referring to himself in the third person. However, The Boulder is also a character in his own right, with a proclivity for earth puns and an arc that sees him denounce wrestling in favor of fighting for the Earth Kingdom on The Day of Black Sun.

The Boulder is not voiced by Dwayne Johnson but by a fellow professional wrestler and sometimes friend. With creators Mike Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko unable to secure Johnson for the part, they turned to another star of the ring. While...

‘Dinner And A Movie’ Revived At TBS After 12 Years
Image
TBS is revisiting Dinner and a Movie, its classic cooking and entertainment show that ran for 16 years on the network.

TBS is reviving the show, in which two celebrity hosts show a movie and prepare a dish related to the film. Kathleen Finch, Chairman and Chief Content Officer of Warner Bros. Discovery’s U.S. Networks Group, announced the remake Wednesday during the company’s Upfront presentation in NYC.

There are few details, but the remake will again feature celebrities watching and commenting on movies and making a dish that is somehow thematically connected to the film.

The original Dinner and a Movie aired on TBS from 1995-2011. Each episode included a movie and the preparation of a creative dinner to go with its theme. One previous episode featured the film Drumline with a recipe titled “The Beets Go On”, a reference to the Sonny & Cher single “The Beat Goes...

Avatar: The Last Airbender Creator Settles An Iroh Lightning Debate
Image
Avatar: The Last Airbender co-creator Michael Dimartino settles a long-discussed debate about when Iroh used lightning generation against Azula in the animated series, addressing the Firebender's family's history with the ability. Voiced initially by Mako Iwamatsu and later Greg Baldwin, the beloved character was a former acclaimed Fire Nation general and member of the highly secretive Order of the White Lotus. Across the animated series, Iroh traveled the world with his nephew Zuko (Dante Basco) on his missions to hunt the Avatar, acting as a guide to the prince in hopes of leading him down a better path.

During an episode of the Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast, a retrospective hosted by franchise stars Janet Varney and Basco, the hosts were joined by Dimartino and voice actor Zach Tyler Eisen to discuss the Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 finale "The Crossroads of Destiny". Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Original Zuko Plan Explained (& Why It Changed)
Image
Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Prince Zuko is known for having one of the most compelling villain arcs in recent history, but the show’s original villain plan had to change for that to happen. At the story’s beginning, 16-year-old Zuko has been banished from the Fire Nation by his father as a punishment. At the time, the Avatar was thought to have been long gone, and the task was meant to be a humiliating wild goose chase. After a chance encounter with the new Avatar, Zuko will stop at nothing to capture him. But by the end of the series, the angry, misguided teenager has become a strong leader.

Zuko’s remarkable character development couldn’t have happened without Eric Coleman, an executive producer at Nickelodeon who worked as a content supervisor at the time and who has since been dubbed “Zuko’s godfather” by the show’s creators.

‘Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special’ Review

Features the voices of: Kaley Cuoco, Lake Bell, Alan Tudyk, James Adomian, Brett Goldstein, John Stamos, Vanessa Marshall, Natalie Morales, Matt Oberg, James Wolk, Michael Ironside, Rachel Dratch, Chris Diamantopoulos | Directed by Jennifer Coyle, Cecilia Aranovich Hamilton

Woe betide anyone who stumbles across the Harley Quinn Valentine’s Day Special without any prior knowledge of the animated TV series, because it’s safe to say they’d be in for something of a shock. Created by DC animation veterans Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, and written and exec-produced by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Dean Lorey, the show specialises in a raunchy, adult-themed and decidedly sweary take on the familiar DC Comics characters, and the Valentine’s Special pushes those limits to even further extremes.

Entitled Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special, the extended, 44 minute episode sees Harley Quinn (voiced by Kaley Cuoco) pulling out all the...

How The Legend Of Vox Machina Found New Actors For Matthew Mercer's Npc Roles
Image
"Dungeons & Dragons," and tabletop RPGs in general, are some of the most fun you can do with a group. The crafting of a fantasy world and the improvised telling of a story as a community is exhilarating, and it's no surprise that livestream campaigns of these games have become so popular in recent years. As time-consuming as the games can be, they offer long-form storytelling that can never be replicated, because no two tables and no two campaigns are the same.

Of course, there are "Dungeons & Dragons" livestreams and then there's "Critical Role," a livestream show where a group of voice actors, led by Matt Mercer, play a game of "D&d." The show started streaming in 2015 and it quickly grew to titanic levels of popularity, with millions of views and subscribers. Fans were drawn to the show's laugh-out-loud crude humor, tear-jerking moments, and its story full of twists and turns,...
