Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man is heading to the big screen for his first movie, arriving in early 2025 – and here’s the first trailer.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, written by Nicholas Stoller and directed by David Soren, is one of the funniest, most delightful animated films of recent years. It even boasts a brilliant theme song by Weird Al Yankovic. The brief clad superhero ought to have had many more big screen adventures, but it wasn’t to be, although a short lived television series is still available to watch on Netflix.

Back in 2020, we heard that author Dav Pilkey’s other hit series Dog Man was heading to the big screen courtesy of Dreamworks Animation. The series consists of 12 books, which have sold over 60 million copies.

The synopsis for the film reads as follows:

‘Hustlers’ Filmmaker Lorene Scafaria to Direct Bee Gees Film for Paramount, Replacing John Carney
Jennifer Lopez, Keke Palmer, Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart, Lizzo, and Cardi B in Queens (2019)
“Hustlers” director Lorene Scafaria has been tapped to direct Paramount’s “Bee Gees” film, TheWrap has confirmed. She replaces John Carney, who exited the project due to a scheduling conflict.

In March of this year, “Sing Street” filmmaker Carney stepped in for Kenneth Branagh, who was originally attached when the project was announced in March 2021.

Oscar-nominee John Logan wrote the latest draft of the script. He also signed on to the project in 2021, taking over from screenwriter Ben Elton.

The Bee Gees’ Barry Gibb will executive produce the still-untitled film about his band with late brothers Maurice and Robin. One of the most commercially successful music groups of all time, they rose to fame in the late ’60s and exploded with “Stayin’ Alive” in the ’70s.

Chicken Run: a culture clash of two companies
Simon Brew Feb 21, 2018

The production of Chicken Run brought together two companies with very different styles...

It had been quite a journey from just off the M5 in Bristol, to Los Angeles and the Academy Awards. But for British animation company Aardman, it was a journey that was taken reasonably regularly. Nick Park, for his Creature Comforts and Wallace & Gromit short films, was collecting regular statuettes, and at the of writing, he has four on his mantelpiece.

The frequent awards attentions required equally frequent journeys to the States. And on one such visit, Park – along with Aardman co-founder Peter Lord, amongst others – found themselves in the company of both Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg.

It was the right coincidence at the right time. At this stage, Spielberg and Katzenberg had just set up their hugely ambitious new studio, DreamWorks Skg (along with David Geffen). Katzenberg was to head up the animation division,...

Captain Underpants movie originally had a big homage to Magnolia
Feb 15, 2018

Exclusive: Captain Underpants director David Soren tells us about the homage to Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia that was cut from the film.

Mild spoilers for Captain Underpants lie ahead

Regular readers of this site will know of our love for the Captain Underpants film, that arrived in cinemas last summer. It’s a terrific adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s books, and a genuinely very funny family movie. As such, it didn’t do anywhere near as well as it deserved at the box office, and come the Oscar nominations, let’s just say one or two ‘less good’ movies took the spot that Underpants surely deserved.

I caught up with the film’s director, David Soren, a week or two back to discuss the movie post-release, and he filled me on a sequence that never made it to the final film. A sequence that would have been a...

David Soren interview: Captain Underpants six months on
Simon Brew Feb 15, 2018

Captain Underpants didn't earn billions, or lots of gongs. But it's one of the best animated films of 2017. We caught up with its director.

Criminally overlooked by most awards bodies, Captain Underpants remains one of the finest animated treats of the past few years. On its release in UK cinemas last summer too, it fell short of the box office totals of the completely shinotverygood The Emoji Movie, and couldn’t land too many gloves on franchise fodder such as Despicable Me 3.

And yet it’s brilliant. It was profitable, too, but not the huge blockbuster success this writer for one thinks it deserved to be.

What, then, does the man who directed it make of the last six months, and of the reception to the film? I contacted David Soren, and we had a chat…

I’m not sure how I’d feel if I were you,...

Ves Awards Nominations: ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Are Top Film Contenders
Denis Villeneuve
Announcing the nominees for their 16th annual Ves Awards, the Visual Effects Society brought welcome news for Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” and Matt Reeves’s “War for the Planet of the Apes,” each up for seven statuettes. “Despicable Me 3” is the most-nominated animated film of the year (5), while the most-honored title overall is “Game of Thrones” (11).

The 21-year-old organization consists of 3,400-plus members in 35 nations. Each year, it recognizes visual effects innovators in film, animation, television, commercials, and video games.

In 2017, Disney’s “The Jungle Book” remake claimed five Ves trophies, more than any other feature (nominations leader “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” was shutout). It’s director-producer, Jon Favreau, will receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award; Weta Digital director and four-time Oscar winner Joe Letteri will accept the Georges Méliès Award, named for the late French illusionist and filmmaker. Letteri is also a nominee...

With ‘Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie’, DreamWorks Animation Crafted a Quirky Indie Blockbuster
“Captain Underpants” turned out to be one of the animated surprises of the year as DreamWorks’ cheapest, most unconventional feature (outsourced to Canada and made for $38 million). Adapted from Dav Pilkey’s popular children’s books, it was a stripped down, comic strip of a movie that didn’t talk down to kids or adults and took all sorts of quirky chances.

It revolves around two fourth-grade pranksters, George (Kevin Hart) and Harold (Thomas Middleditch), who create comic books about a a superhero named Captain Underpants and hypnotize their principal, Mr. Krupp (Ed Helms), into becoming their superhero when he separates them.

An Experiment in Cost-Cutting and Outsourcing

As a result of cost-cutting and reorganization in 2015, DreamWorks outsourced to Technicolor-owned Mikros Image in Montreal (“The Little Prince,” “Mune: Guardian of the Moon”). “It came about because the resources at the studio were on to other movies [‘Trolls’ and ‘Boss Baby’],” said producer Mireille Soria.

Captain Underpants: a superhero who needs your help
Simon Brew Aug 23, 2017

One of the best family movies in ages is struggling at the box office. We take a look...

Trawling through the box office totals for 2017’s family movie releases is not the cheeriest of jobs. For me, the two most entertaining and funniest have been The Lego Batman Movie and Captain Underpants. Both have the best written gags I’ve enjoyed at the cinema all year, and both have found their box office slightly depressed.

The Lego Batman Movie, for all the noise it rightly made during its release period, actually recorded box office totals a good deal less than most of us would have expected a) for a Lego movie, and b) for a Batman movie. Still, Warner Bros’ marketing machine is busy selling DVDs right now to right that wrong.

But the underperformance of Captain Underpants is borderline criminal. Based on the excellent series of children’s books,...

10 films to beat the 2017 franchise fatigue
Mark Harrison Aug 1, 2017

Bored with massive films and special effects? Then here are 10 smaller movies well worth your consideration...

It's that time of year when we usually give you a list of films playing in cinemas during August, as the summer blockbuster season winds down, that will help cleanse your palate after all the tentpoles and sequels that have proliferated throughout the year so far. But to be honest, this summer has been so good to us, we're more refreshed than usual.

Even aside from originals like Edgar Wright's Baby Driver and Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, this year's blockbusters have been of an unusually high standard. Wonder Woman pulled the Dceu out of its critical nosedive, War For The Planet Of The Apes is a gorgeous and emotional conclusion to the reboot trilogy, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming proved that Marvel's ever expanding continuity is still going strong.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie review – more than just flatulence gags
This surprisingly nuanced animation intersperses lavatory humour with narrative invention

Although one of the foundations on which much children’s cinema was built, lavatory humour was always perceived as an inglorious last resort. Can’t think of a funny line? Have a character break wind instead. By this logic, Captain Underpants, a film almost entirely crafted out of lavatory humour, should be a soul-crushing, puerile slog. However, David Soren’s animation, which was adapted from the children’s books by Dav Pilkey, is a delightful surprise. It’s a celebration of friendship, of the boundless creativity of children’s minds. It’s a dizzily silly collection of sly cultural references. It’s visually inventive, narratively agile. And yes, it has fart gags.

Film Review: ‘Captain Underpants’ Saves Us From the Summer Snooze
Chicago - I’m sure from the title you can glean the level of seriousness to expect, but how funny “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” turns out to be is no laughing matter. The film’s surprising irreverence and respect for the comic book genre makes this the animated hero we’ve needed, and the second best superhero film out this weekend (See: Wonder Woman).

Rating: 4.0/5.0

For obvious reasons, most animated films like this one are aimed at children, but only the truly impressive ones incorporate aspects for adults, realizing that they will be the ones who have to sit through the film with their children. The general humor in the film caters to young boys, with enough potty humor to clog a toilet with. Nicholas Stoller adapts David Pilkey’s popular book series enough care to stay faithful to the series’ superhero essence while creating an original story with it.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie Review
There’s no question that – despite the timeless Marvel vs. DC debate (or perhaps because of it?) – superhero cinema is here to stay for a long time. The recent releases of such critically acclaimed efforts as Logan and this week’s Wonder Woman, however, underscore the genre’s need to explore some fresh approaches to comic book storytelling, lest the million think pieces heralding the cinematic fall of superheroes come to fruition. So, while adults looking to satisfy their bloodlust can see Hugh Jackman shredding off limbs in the aforementioned latest X-Men film, children can root for a decidedly less self-serious hero in Dreamworks’ latest release, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie.

Based on the 12-book series by author Dav Pilkey, the film follows elementary school students George (Kevin Hart) and Harold (Thomas Middleditch), who stumble upon the perfect way to keep their school’s notorious Principal Krupp (Ed Helms...

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie trailer takes silly to new heights
Author: Zehra Phelan

From the makers of Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar, Dreamworks animation, comes an all new animated movie adaptation of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie with Ed Helms and Kevin Hart heading up the voice cast. From its first trailer, nothing but trouble is heading their way.

Captain Underpants is based on the book series of the same name, and centres on a pair of school pranksters who aggravate their principal to the point that he moves to separate them into separate classes, vowing, “I’m going to annihilate your friendship.” The book series will be remembered by those who grew up in the late 1990s and early 2000s for its silliness and total dedication to all things excrement, toilets, wedgies, underpants and snot, so expect a ton of toilet humour.

Official Trailer for Animated 'Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie'
"You are now the amazing Captain Underpants!!" 20th Century Fox has unveiled an official trailer for the animated Captain Underpants movie, titled in full - Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. This is based on the very popular books by Dav Pilkey about two mischievous kids who hypnotize their mean elementary school principal and turn him into their comic book creation, the kind-hearted and elastic-banded Captain Underpants. Kevin Hart voices George, and Thomas Middleditch voices Harold, with Ed Helms voicing their principal. Also featuring Nick Kroll, Jordan Peele and Kristen Schaal. As fun as this looks in a few scenes, DreamWorks tends to focus too much on the goofy comedy, and not enough on the story or characters. I'm sure it will be good for kids, but this doesn't seem like the big hit of the summer. Here's the first trailer for David Soren's Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie,...

Kevin Hart and Ed Helms Introduce Us to Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie
Throughout the years I have seen a lot of my favorite books as a child be transformed into either live or animated film adaptation which has been fun to see. Some that come to mind as I write this is Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and Holes. This year DreamWorks Animation is bringing yet another one of these children's series to life, the mighty Captain Underpants.

The Adventures of Captain Underpants was written by American author and illustrator Dav Pilkey. The series is so popular it has sold over 70 million books worldwide. The story follow two kids George and Harold who hypnotize their mean principle Mr. Krupp. This accidentally turns him into their homemade comic book hero Captain Underpants, he later gains superpowers. The series concluded in 2015 with it's twelfth book and will soon come big screens everywhere this summer.

The film is titled Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie Trailer Has Arrived
Ed Helms in Capitaine Superslip (2017)
DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox have released the first trailer for Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie! Based on the worldwide sensation and bestselling book series and starring Kevin Hart and Ed Helms, Captain Underpants tells the story of George and Harold, who hypnotize their principal into thinking he's a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants.

Ed Helms and Kevin Hart were on hand to introduce this first look teaser, giving the animated comedy adventure a little star powered boost. It's too bad that they can't agree on who or what Captain Underpants truly is. Kevin Hart offers this take on Cu, who may or may not be a superhero.

Silly First Trailer for Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie
DreamWorks Animation has released the first trailer for their animated feature film adaptation of the classic children's book series Captain Underpants. If you're a fan of the books, then I'm sure you'll enjoy this trailer for Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie because it's just as silly as the books are.

This raucously subversive comedy for the entire family tells the story of two overly imaginative pranksters named George and Harold, who hypnotize their principal into thinking he’s a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants.

The film was directed by David Soren (Turbo) and features a talented voice cast that includes Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley) as George and Harold, comedian Nick Kroll as the villainous Professor Poopypants, Jordan Peele as nerdy tattletale Melvin Sneedly, and Ed Helms as Captain Underpants.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is set to be released in theaters on June 2nd.

Captain Underpants Prepares For A Suitably Epic Adventure In First Trailer
You’ve heard of Captain America and Captain Marvel – heck, you’re probably even familiar with Captain Fantastic thanks to Viggo Mortensen – but what about Captain Underpants?

Due to screen in front of Lionsgate’s Power Rangers movie this coming weekend – for those in the States and Canada, at least – we now have our first look at David Soren’s (Turbo) animated pic in action. Hatched as a collaboration between DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox, Captain Underpants plucks Dav Pilkey’s wonderfully wacky cast of characters and catapults them onto the big screen in style.

Ed Helms, best known for his roles in The Office and The Hangover franchise, lends his voice to the title role, and is flanked by an all-star cast comprised of Kevin Hart (Jumanji), Thomas Middleditch, Nick Kroll as villainous Professor Poopypants and Jordan Peele, the creative mind behind horror hit Get Out, as nerdy tattletale Melvin Sneedly.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie Gets Heroic First Poster
It’s surreal to know we’re getting a Captain Underpants movie later this year. At least, it is for me. As a child who once obsessed over Dav Pilkey’s gleefully juvenile book series, it swells my old(er) heart to know we’re finally going to see these wacky, zany characters make their way onto the screen. While we’re heard little about the project thus far, DreamWorks Animation will soon ring out their promotional bandwagon, starting with today’s first poster, which might remind you of another superhero, one who’ll also get his own animated movie later this month.

Captain Underpants will have Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch provide the voices of George Beard and Harold Hutchins, respectively, two fourth-graders whose notorious pranks and naughty self-made comic books often get them in trouble with their principal, Mr. Krupp (voiced by Ed Helms). But they pull off their biggest,...

Captain Underpants Photo Introduces a New Kind of Superhero
Ed Helms in Capitaine Superslip (2017)
Not all heroes wear capes, but some of them do. And sometimes the ones that do also happen to wear little else, save for a pair of white underpants. Such is the case with famed children's book superhero Captain Underpants, who is getting his own movie next year. Now we finally have our first look at the upcoming animated adaptation of the best-selling book series.

This first photo from the Captain Underpants movie comes courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, which shows a very faithful animated adaptation of the titular hero. EW spoke a bit with director David Soren about the movie and how Ed Helms was able to bring the character to life. Here is what he had to say.

"[Helms] has managed to tap into the sheer stupidity of Captain Underpants. He's a delusional superhero who thinks he's got all kinds of powers and has literally zero ability beyond just that of a middle-aged man.

First Look At DreamWorks Animation’s Captain Underpants Film
2017 is going to be packed to the brim with superhero movies. You’ve got Wonder Woman, Logan, Justice League and Spider-Man: Homecoming to name but a few. But buried beneath all those massive tentpoles you’ve also got another superhero film, albeit a very different one.

We’re talking about DreamWorks Animation’s Captain Underpants. While the titular character may not have quite as large a fanbase as some of those aforementioned heroes, there’s still a lot of people who are eagerly anticipating his big screen debut. And now, thanks to EW, we have our first look at the film – which you can check out up above.

Based on Dav Pilkey’s children’s books, the adaptation will follow “George Beard (Kevin Hart) and Harold Hutchins (Thomas Middleditch), two fourth graders who hypnotize their tyrannical principal (Ed Helms) into stripping down, tying a curtain around his neck, and declaring himself Earth’s newest defender.

Ken Jeong 05-17-2011
Exclusive: Ken Jeong Talks Turbo Blu-ray
Ken Jeong 05-17-2011
Like many animated movies, DreamWorks Animation's Turbo features an amazing ensemble cast of voice actors such as Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pe&#241a, Samuel L. Jackson, Luis Guzm&#225n and Snoop Lion, just to name a few. Then there's the incomparable Ken Jeong, who plays the cranky Korean woman Kim Ly in this DreamWorks Animation comedy, a role he also reprises in the Netflix TV series Turbo Fast. I recently had the chance to speak with the actor over the phone about the Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD release, where we discussed what drew him to this role and much more. Take a look at what he had to say.

First off, this is a hilarious character. What goes through your mind when they approached you to voice an old woman?

Ken Jeong: It was really the collaboration between me and David Soren, the director. I remember that first voice-over session,...

Exclusive Interview With Ken Jeong On Turbo
Since his breakout role in 2007′s Knocked Up, Ken Jeong has cemented himself as a comedic force in Hollywood. He’s had an array of memorable live-action films where he’s played his fair share of crazy characters and in Dreamworks’ Turbo, he doesn’t fall short of the expectation of eccentricity, lending his vocal talents to a female manicurist named Kim-ly who decides to help finance a racing snail at the Indy 500.

I reviewed the film over the summer and thought for a flick about snails it definitely wasn’t sluggish, with a fast-paced story and some great voice acting propelling it along. Certainly one worth watching, for both kids and adults.

In honor of Turbo‘s Blu-Ray release, I had the opportunity to talk with Ken about the film. We discussed his kids’ reaction to the movie, his favorite elements of voice acting, and much more.

"Frozen," "Monsters University" Top Annie Awards Nominations!
Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.

I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.

Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

Exclusive Interview With Ben Schwartz On Turbo
One of the better animated movies of 2013 is definitely DreamWorks’ Turbo. Boasting a star-studded cast including Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, and Michael Peña, it tells the story of a small snail who dreams of racing in the Indy 500, despite the fact that all the odds are stacked against him.

I reviewed the film over the summer and thought for a flick about snails it definitely wasn’t sluggish, with a fast-paced story and some great voice acting propelling it along. Certainly one worth watching, for both kids and adults.

In honor of Turbo‘s release on Blu-Ray, I had the opportunity to talk with Ben Schwartz, who voices Skidmark (the snail with the goofy eyes in the picture above) in the film. While it was a bit hard to stay on topic due to how funny Ben is, we found a way to discuss what drew him to a movie about racing snails,...

Luis Guzman Talks Turbo, available now on Blu-ray and DVD

The DreamWorks Animation comedy Turbo features one of the finest ensemble of voice talent in recent memory. The story follows a snail (Ryan Reynolds) who dreams of becoming fast and winning the Indianapolis 500. After a freak accident, Turbo gets his wish, blessed with lightning-fast speed that takes him all the way to Indy to chase down his dreams, with the help of a taco vendor named Tito (Michael Pe&#241a). I recently had the chance to speak with Luis Guzm&#225n for the Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD release. The actor voices Angelo, Tito's brother and owner of a taco restaurant who disapproves of this whole adventure. Take a look at what he had to say below.

Exclusive: Ben Schwartz Talks Turbo
Ben Schwartz
Ben Schwartz talks about voicing the snail Skidmark in the animated comedy Turbo, currently available on Blu-ray and DVD

Between playing the outlandish Jean-Ralphio on NBC's Parks and Recreation and Clyde Oberholt on House of Lies, the multi-talented Ben Schwartz somehow found time to lend his voice to a snail named Skidmark in Turbo, currently available on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD. Skidmark is a part of the race crew who helps Turbo (Ryan Reynolds), a snail who gets blessed with amazing speed after falling through a car engine, realize his dream of racing in the Indianapolis 500. I recently had the chance to speak with this actor about his voice recording process, future projects, and much more. Here's what he had to say.

50 dedications at the end of movies (and what they mean)
Odd List Simon Brew 15 Nov 2013 - 07:08

Lots of films are dedicated to, or in memory of someone. But it's not always clear why. We've been finding out...

Back when Breaking Bad returned for its final batch of episodes in August 2013, it had a dedication at the end of it. The card read 'Dedicated to our friend Kevin Cordasco'. As it turned out, Kevin Cordasco was a 16-year old who had been battling cancer for seven years, who had met both Bryan Cranston and Vince Gilligan. Cordasco died before he could ever get to see the episode dedicated to him.

I found this such a moving story, that it got me wondering about the dedications that appear on films, and what the story behind them was. After all, the dedications are there for a reason. What I uncovered was some funny stories, mainly extremely sad ones, and some extremely moving dedications.

Captain Phillips, Enough Said, Escape Plane: this week's new films
Captain Phillips | Enough Said | Escape Plan | Prince Avalance | The Lebanese Rocket Society | Like Father, Like Son | The Broken Circle Breakdown | Turbo | Last Passenger

Captain Phillips (12A)

(Paul Greengrass, 2013, Us) Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Michael Chernus. 134 mins

No room for Depp-like jollity aboard this pirate tale. Instead, Greengrass brings his usual reportage-style urgency to a true-life Indian Ocean hijack situation. It's tense, credible and intelligent, even if pitting four Somali fishermen against Hanks, a big ship and formidable back-up is a pretty unfair contest – that very imbalance is part of the point.

Enough Said (12A)

(Nicole Holofcener, 2013, Us) Julia Louis-Dreyfus, James Gandolfini, Catherine Keener. 93 mins

Gandolfini's final performance elevates a polished but trifling comedy, centring on a blossoming romance poisoned by an ex-wife.

Escape Plan (15)

(Mikael Håfström, 2013, Us) Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger. 115 mins

The "geriaction" veterans join forces to punch their way out of a high-tech super-prison.

Prince Avalanche (15)

(David Gordon Green,...

Samuel L Jackson, Ryan Reynolds, Snoop Dogg : 'Turbo is about friendship'
Samuel L. Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Ryan Reynolds, Maya Rudolph, Mike Bell, and Ben Schwartz in Turbo (2013)
Potentially the world's first snail-based underdog story, DreamWorks' Turbo follows an ordinary garden snail (Ryan Reynolds) whose impossible dream of becoming a racing champion suddenly becomes a reality.

Digital Spy sat down with Reynolds and his fellow voice actors Samuel L Jackson, Michael Peña and Snoop Dogg to talk about the process of making Turbo.

Jackson discussed the "randomness" of the vocal performance process, while Reynolds and Peña praised the vivid visual world created by director David Soren and his team of animators.

Paul Giamatti, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader and Luis Guzmán are also among the voice cast.

Turbo is released in the UK today (October 17).

Turbo review
Review Simon Brew 18 Oct 2013 - 06:46

DreamWorks brings a racing snail to the screen in Turbo. And the results are good...

Something's gone a bit awry at DreamWorks Animation. In years gone past, it could release films of variable quality - Shark Tale, Puss In Boots - and still sit back and watch the moolah roll in. Then, last year's Rise Of The Guardians took some effort to clear $100m at the Us box office, in spite of being really rather terrific, and it looked as if there was something of a blip.

Now, with Turbo being significantly hurt by the success of Despicable Me 2 at the Us box office over the summer and only pulling in $82m in receipts (against a budget of $135m). What was once a blip now may be a bubble bursting.

Yet it's a pity that this has shone a negative light on Turbo,...

Samuel L. Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Ryan Reynolds, Maya Rudolph, Mike Bell, and Ben Schwartz in Turbo (2013)
'Turbo' review: Ryan Reynolds plays a snail with a big dream
Samuel L. Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Ryan Reynolds, Maya Rudolph, Mike Bell, and Ben Schwartz in Turbo (2013)
Director: David Soren; Screenwriter Darren Lemke, Robert D Siegel, David Soren; Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Peña, Bill Hader, Snoop Dogg; Running time: 96 mins; Certificate: PG

While this colourful racing-based animation has failed to get Stateside audiences revved up (zing) in the way that Ron Howard's Rush recently managed, it's a zippy and good-natured adventure that hones in on its target audience from the get-go. With its cunningly choreographed slapstick and broadly drawn characters, Turbo is aimed firmly at the kids and makes few concessions to older viewers, with the exception of some unexpectedly smart dialogue.

Drawing from the same unlikely underdog well as Ratatouille's rat who wants to be a gourmet chef, Turbo stars Ryan Reynolds as the voice of Theo, a distinctly unremarkable everysnail who dreams of being a great racer. Despite his cynical older brother Chet's (Paul Giamatti) best efforts to give him a reality check,...
