The ITV miniseries Joan stars the eponymous Joan Hannington, a prolific jewel thief in London during the 1980s, and the six-episode show hews pretty closely to the real story. Starring Sophie Turner in one of her biggest roles since Game of Thrones, Joan premiered on September 29, 2024, adapting Hannington's 2002 memoir, I Am What I Am: The True Story of Britain's Most Notorious Jewel Thief. With an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, Joan has been roundly celebrated by critics, with particular praise going towards Turner's performance.
One of the most exciting parts of the True Crime TV show comes from knowing most of it happened in real life. Joan does an impressive job weaving in the facts of the real story with fascinating details, and some great dramatic acting and storytelling. The show follows Joan's life from her early years as a penniless mother looking for any way to support her small family,...

Most people came to know Sophie Turner through her role as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, where she was a main player for all eight seasons. “I went from 13 to 23 on that show – it was my whole childhood," she told Bazaar for a recent interview. "We’re all still on a massive group chat, and we try and meet each other whenever we’re in the same country... they’re family.”
Turner was only 15 years old when Game of Thrones came out and even younger when she was cast. According to her, pretty much everyone in her school auditioned, but she got the part. “I don’t know how it happened, because my audition tape was absolutely horrific. But, somehow, they ended up casting me.”
That would obviously be very exciting for a young actor just starting their career, but it also meant that Turner grew up in the public eye,...

There's been a sudden resurgence of interest in Tomb Raider, the long-running video game series about international treasure hunter Lara Croft, who's kind of like a British Indianan Jones. It's Halloween season, and everyone is prepping their costumes. That includes ordinary people like you and I as well as celebrities with 14 million followers.
I may have someone in particular in mind: Sophie Turner, best known for playing the role of Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, just posted her outfit for Halloween 2024, and it harkens back to a style popular across the malls of America in the early 2000s, when Hot Topics were cultural hubs and cell phones actually had little buttons you had to compress like some kind of idiot. Turner's look this year is inspired by The Matrix:

It’s been almost a year since we last saw Alexandra Daddario as Rowan Fielding in the Mayfair Witches, but Season 2 is coming.
Mayfair Witches Season 1 ended with some bombshell moments, from Rowan’s father’s identity being uncovered to the birth of Rowan’s child, and ultimately, the powerful line, “You can’t control me,” which resonates with all of Rowan’s character.
This exciting story will continue in Mayfair Witches Season 2 as we follow Rowan and Lasher (Jack Huston) in their next journey together, and it’s going to be one for the books.
(Alfonso Bresciani/AMC)
That is if it’s anything like the second book in Anne Rice’s series.
There are also some new faces joining the cast, so let’s dive in and see what Season 2 has in store for us.

Three couples and a beach house — what could go wrong??
On Frasier Season 2 Episode 6, Frasier played matchmaker for Freddy and Eve and enlisted Roz as his accomplice in a delightful outing that combined farce with heart.
Yes, that’s right — Roz returned for another visit! That plane she took home to Seattle in Frasier Season 2 Episode 3 barely had time to refuel before heading back to Boston.

Now she and her daughter Alice have joined Frasier and the gang (minus Alan and Olivia) in Cape Cod for an unspecified holiday weekend that seems way too early to be Independence Day.
I feel like it was just Valentine’s Day in the show’s timeline. So maybe this episode takes place on Memorial Day? In any event, there are actual fireworks involved this weekend, if not romantic ones.

If there is one thing CBS is good at, it’s keeping audiences in the dark about what’s in store for NCIS: Origins. The promo doesn’t do much in terms of details, but there’s plenty of intensity.
Considering the nature of the series, we have a lot of gunfire and standoffs ahead of us. So, what about the show sets it apart from any other procedural on television?
For one, NCIS: Origins gives fans of the franchise a look into the back story of a series vet. That’s expected given the show’s premise.
(Erik Voake, Greg Gayne/CBS)
The series’ real strength will be in how well the characters are developed. And since NCIS has been going strong for over twenty seasons, the pressure is on.

The CW has added a gritty new crime drama featuring Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner to its Fall line-up.
The limited series Joan is being called a diamond in the rough for its thrilling storyline, iconic 80s fashion, and music.
We’re only two episodes into a six-episode season, and so far, the show is captivating. This is especially true given that the series is based on the real-life story of British jewel thief Joan Hannington.

The British ITV series has received little marketing promotion here in the states.
Aside from some brief attention, it was given in its pre-production days due to the highly publicized divorce of its leading lady, Sophie Turner.

On The Penguin Season 1 Episode 3, we delved into Vic’s backstory in a way that illuminated many of his present-day actions and motivations.
This week, the show explored a deeper, darker mystery by fleshing out the enigmatic Sofia Falcone.
It’s not easy to evoke sympathy for a ruthless drug lord and alleged serial killer, but the writers accomplished exactly that with the show’s most harrowing hour to date.

TV Fanatic writers Lisa Babick, Whitney Evans, Thomas Godwin, and Tyler Johnson discussed Sofia’s past, her family, and her shocking act of revenge in this week’s round table. Take a look:
Obviously, this episode was all about Sofia. How did her backstory influence your view of her relationship with Oz and her role within her family?
Thomas: Oz did what any low-level, knee-jerk henchman would do, and Sofia probably should have known that.

Agatha All Along finally breaks the Disney mold significantly, becoming the least expensive Marvel Cinematic Universe series on Disney+. Who would have thought Disney had it in them?
The staggering sums of money Disney throws at these shows are hilarious because the figures are barely believable. Agatha’s predecessor, WandaVision, ran up a nearly $25 million per episode tab.
At nine episodes, things enter the realm of the unreal and are difficult to explain.
Considering the fact that many of these shows effectively tanked, it’s all the more head-scratching. It’s not that Disney put out some duds. It’s that they did so repeatedly.

The fiercest, strongest woman you’d ever want in your corner visited Law & Order.
The Law & Order Season 24 Episode 2 Benson crossover featured her at her best: passionate, determined, and unafraid to stand up to people she works with to get justice for a rape survivor.

With the release of ITV's new crime drama Joan, all eyes are on Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner again. The Emmy nominee plays the titular role in the six-part series, based on Joan Hannington's 2004 memoir I Am What I Am: The True Story of Britain’s Most Notorious Jewel Thief. Ahead of the show's premiere, Turner spoke with The Times about her connection to the part and how being a mother herself changed how she approached her performance.
In the years since Turned finished playing Sansa on Game of Thrones, undoubtedly Turner's biggest role to date, the English actress has appeared in movies like X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Do Revenge, along with series such as The Staircase and Quibi's Survive. Five years after being crowned Queen of the North, Sophie Turner is back on TV playing another desperate woman pushed to her limits by men and misfortune. Ok, maybe with a few less dragons.

Based on Joan Hannington’s memoir, “I Am What I Am: The True Story of Britain’s Most Notorious Jewel Thief,” and adapted for television by Anna Symon, The CW’s “Joan” is a stellar crime series about opportunity, motherhood and the chances we are willing to take to go after the lives we desire. Joan, the biographical series, is based on the life of Joan Hannington, and though the show touches upon the various aspects of her life, it primarily focuses on the kind of relationship she had with her daughter, Kelly. Most of the things shown in the film about her and her daughter actually happened in real life, but the director has taken certain creative liberties, dramatized a few events, and added some fictional plot points mainly to make the conflicts more conspicuous and impactful. Joan had a child with her first husband, Ray Pavey, whose name has been changed in the series to Gary. Joan was quite young when she had Kelly (real name Debbie), and probably at that time, she didn’t have a clue about the kind of responsibility she was taking on her shoulders. Ray was involved in all sorts of illegitimate activities, and he provided little to no support to his wife.

The '80s might be depicted as the era of scrunchies, neon outfits, and synth-infused music, but underneath that upbeat aesthetic lays some dark undertones. Within this decade in London, a notorious crime boss named Joan Hannington roamed the streets with the habit of orchestrating jewel heists. Diamonds were her best friend, at least momentarily. In the latest ITV drama titled Joan, which will air in the U.S. via The CW, viewers witness the ups and downs of a woman who was clever when it came to shoplifting but didn't have as much of a grasp on what she needed to do to reunite with her child. Played by Sophie Turner in her first lead role since Game of Thrones' Queen of the North, the six-episode series offers a surface-level breakdown of what happened to its main subject, failing to go deeper into its characters' backgrounds and motivations.

Sophie Turner became a household name for her incredible performance as Sansa Stark in all eight seasons of Game of Thrones. The English actress, now 28, has gone on to scoop up other impressive roles, though nothing has been as groundbreaking as the HBO hit. As she promotes her latest project, playing real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington in ITV's Joan, Turner has discussed what drew her to the role, navigating motherhood, and, of course, her feelings on Thrones years later.
Game of Thrones came to an end five years ago, and while the series finale was not a crowd-pleaser, the show has cemented itself as one of the best of all time and remains a cultural powerhouse. We're not sure if Turner has checked out the prequel series House of the Dragon — though her ex-husband Joe Jonas has — but we know that the actress has not fully moved on from Westeros yet.

Sophie Turner takes on the true story of one of Britain’s most infamous jewel thieves. Joan tells the tale of Joan Hannington, a woman who broke free from an oppressive past and made her own fortune through audacious heists in 1980s London. Turner steps into the shoes of this resilient character, but how well does she capture Hannington’s spirit of adventure and defiance?
Set amongst the flashy excess of Thatcher-era Britain, the series explores Hannington’s journey from battered housewife to cunning “godmother” of the criminal underworld. We join her at a low point, fleeing her abusive partner with only her young daughter in tow. With few options and fewer allies, Hannington fights to carve her own path. Her flair for gemology and skill at winning people over serve her well as she plots increasingly daring jobs.
It’s an engaging story that seems ripe for a captivating drama.
