All We Imagine As Light took home top honors at the 18th Asian Film Awards (Afa), winning the Best Film prize.
Held at the Grand Theatre at the Xiqu Centre in Hong Kong, this year’s Afa selection was overseen by legendary Hong Kong actor and Afa jury president Sammo Hung.
“It is a special thing to win this award in Hong Kong, which is also a special place for cinema,” said All We Imagine As Light director Payal Kapadia. “Filmmaking is so challenging. Every film that gets made is a prize. To find the financing and the right collaborators, to keep the vision intact, even distributing the movie — everything is a challenge. But doing it with a wonderful crew makes everything easier.”
Japanese filmmaker Daihachi Yoshida won Best Director for black-and-white absurdist comedy Teki Cometh.
Sean Lau won Best Actor for his role in Papa, directed by Philip Yung.

Will Keanu Reeves Return In John Wick 5? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The John Wick franchise isn’t done thrilling audiences just yet, and Lionsgate has just dropped some exciting news to prove it. According to Jenefer Brown, the studio’s EVP and head of Global Products and Experiences, John Wick 5 is officially in development.
However, the big question remains: will Keanu Reeves return as the iconic Baba Yaga? And what about director Chad Stahelski? Brown remained tight-lipped on both fronts.

Did John Wick Really Die?
The uncertainty surrounding Reeves’ role feels especially fitting given the explosive ending of John Wick: Chapter 4, where the legendary hitman seemingly met his end. Yet death doesn’t always mean goodbye in a world like Wick’s, where bulletproof suits, hidden societies, and miraculous recoveries are the norm.

Action and martial arts icon Donnie Yen continues to thrill audiences all over the globe, and one of his best movies is now finding renewed success on free streaming. Released back in 2008, Yen takes the lead in Ip Man, which tells the story of the Wing Chun grandmaster who would go on to teach the legendary Bruce Lee. Detailing Ip Man’s early life during the Sino-Japanese War, and his battles with going outside of tradition, Ip Man has now entered the top 10 on free streaming service Tubi, as fans tune in to watch the unmatched skills of the John Wick star.
Directed by Wilson Yip and starring Donnie Yen as the title character alongside Simon Yam, Lynn Hung, Lam Ka-tung, Xing Yu, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, and Tenma Shibuya, Ip Man features martial arts choreography by fellow genre icon Sammo Hung. The movie was met with rave reviews upon release, and...

It is fair to say that Donnie Yen‘s last stint as a director, which came with 2023’s “Sakra”, was quite the misfire from the martial arts legend. Despite housing decent action set pieces, as can be expected from Yen, its narrative shortcomings were ultimately its downfall. This is also why there is both some apprehension and a lot of anticipation over his latest directorial, “The Prosecutor”, whose promotional material seems to have promised a return to form for Yen both as a director and actor. Let’s find out if it stays true to its promise.

Following the release of his recent directorial effort The Prosecutor, and amid the news that he could helm his upcoming John Wick spin-off, it might be a good idea for Donnie Yen fans to check out his other, recent martial arts action epic. Which he both directed and stars in, of course. Titled Sakra, the action outing was released in 2023 and sees Yen take the helm of this wuxia film, which can now be found on a variety of streaming platforms.
Directed by Donnie Yen in his first directorial effort for two decades, Sakra is available to stream on Apple TV, Hi-yah, and more in the United States and Prime Video in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. Starring Chen Yuqi, Cya Liu, and Kara Wai, Sakra was a big hit in China, and is adapted from the 1960s novel “Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils" by Jin Yong, and follows Yen as a...

Donnie Yen is reportedly in talks to direct the John Wick Caine spinoff, and his movie Sakra shows why he is the perfect person to do so. When Donnie Yen played the John Wick franchise's blind assassin, Caine, the character soon became a fan favorite, almost stealing the show from John Wick himself. Caine is one of the strongest characters in the John Wick movies, and his nearly supernatural fighting ability made him the perfect candidate for a spin-off. While the franchise director, Chad Stahelski was expected to direct the project, this may not be the case.
It appears that Donnie Yen may direct John Wick's Caine spinoff, which is exciting news, as Yen's experience in both acting and directing makes him a great candidate for the role. Netflix's Witcher franchise is ever-expanding, and next month we'll be returning to the Continent for a brand new animated spinoff movie. The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is set during the early years of Geralt of Rivia's monster-hunting career, when he's still roaming the land with his bard companion Jaskier. In those early days, Geralt finds himself contending with a race of underwater merpeople who are attacking divers near the seaside village of Bremervoord.
The streamer has just released a new trailer for Sirens of the Deep, giving us our best look yet at the animated film. Watch below, then we'll discuss!

As we can see in this trailer, Geralt is contracted by the king of a coastal village to find out what monster is killing people in his waters, just like in The Witcher books by Andrzej Sapkowski.

Donnie Yen is continuing his return to the director's chair after a 20-year break with The Prosecutor. Having started his career as a stuntman in Hong Kong, Yen first began finding success with the TV adaptation of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury, as well as choreographing and starring in numerous Hollywood action movies, including Blade II. Though having worked as an action director multiple times throughout his career, Yen's list of full directorial efforts is relatively smaller, ranging from 1997's Legend of the Wolf to 2004's Protégé de la Rose Noire, after which he wouldn't direct again until 2023's Sakra.

As the adage goes, justice is blind: by that, of course, they mean it's unbiased. In The Prosecutor, both starring and directed by modern martial arts legend Donnie Yen, Yen plays a prosecutor who finds justice blind in a different sense: there's a Justice System that closes its eyes to actual justice. Yen's prosecutor proceeds as any good state representative does, and punches justice in the face until its eyes open. It's an interesting genre hybrid with some exceptional moments of action and strong character work, but there's a lack of balance between different plot threads and tones that keep the film from succeeding as a unified whole.

The "Ip Man" movies represent some of the most fun you can have with the martial arts genre. The franchise is loosely based on the life of the actual Ip Man (or Yip Man), a Chinese martial arts grandmaster who specialized in the art of Wing Chun, and whose most famous student was Bruce Lee, the star of the incredible martial arts action film "Enter the Dragon." The main movies in the property are directed by Wilson Yip and star Donnie Yen as the titular character. Yen played Ip Man for more than a decade in-between giving us one of the best "Star Wars" characters ever in Chirrut Îmwe from "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," as well as one of the best fights in the "John Wick" films.

Donnie Yen might soon swap his white cane for a director’s chair while continuing his role as Caine, the blind assassin, in a new John Wick spinoff. Following his praised performance in John Wick: Chapter 4, Yen is in talks to not only star but also direct this upcoming project.

The saga of John Wick is getting even larger with the announcement of a Caine spinoff that will follow a new character on their own action-packed adventure. Beginning in 2014, the John Wick series concerns the titular character, played by Keanu Reeves, who embarks on various missions of revenge against the criminal underworld. Despite their simple premise, the movies in the explosive franchise are noted for their stylish execution and larger-than-life action sequences. Each film has built upon the last, and John Wick is a certified moneymaker.

The action’s hot but the dramatic temperature varies in “The Prosecutor,” a flashy combination of Hong Kong crime story and legal drama starring and directed by Donnie Yen. The veteran action star is convincing and charismatic as a cop who quits the force to become a crusading Department of Justice prosecutor but is let down by a screenplay that’s prone to bouts of melodrama in and out of the courtroom. Entertaining enough despite its flaws, “The Prosecutor” has topped the Hong Kong box office for two weeks (thus far) since opening on Dec. 21 and ought to perform well in limited U.S. theatrical release from Jan. 10.

The prosecution never rests in Donnie Yen’s new action-infused legal drama The Prosecutor, in which the veteran martial artist plays a righteous cop who quits the force to join the Department of Justice when he feels the legal system is letting too many criminals slip through its fingers.
Yen directs as well as stars alongside a host of familiar faces including Francis Ng, Julian Cheung and the increasingly ubiquitous Michael Hui, but Yen’s hardcore action fanbase may be left wanting. The Prosecutor too often feels more invested in bludgeoning its audience into submission using the tenets of Hong Kong’s rule of law, rather than the iron fists of traditional street justice.
On paper, The Prosecutor, which releases in the U.S. today, seems tailor-made for Yen, especially at a moment in his career when he is actively looking to broaden his dramatic range. The script, from regular Ip Man scribe Edmond Wong,...

One of the great things about the John Wick franchise, beyond Keanu Reeves' stone-cold portrayal of the titular character and the way it has redefined how action is depicted on screen, is that it has introduced secondary characters that have garnered nearly as much interest as Wick himself. The most recent case of this has been Donnie Yen's blind assassin character Caine, who was first introduced in the most recent installment, John Wick: Chapter 4. Yen crafted a character that stole every scene he was in and, seeing the potential that Caine could have on his own, a spin-off was mentioned as being in development. Not much has been revealed about the project since its announcement, but now word comes that Yen is in talks to showcase his skills in front of and behind the camera.

Announced last May, the second John Wick spin-off film, Caine, could see Hong Kong legend Donnie Yen direct as well as star.

The studio is also keen to get a Caine spin-off movie up and running. Donnie Yen’s blind kung-fu assassin character was an entertaining addition to 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4, and in the continued absence of series star, Keanu Reeves, Lionsgate needs popular characters to build out its world of talented killers, armoured suits and ostentatious currency.

There’s also a spin-off TV show titled Under The High Table in production which will join The Continental in expanding the world of Wick on the small screen.

John Wick's Caine spinoff movie receives a major directing update from Donnie Yen, who is returning to reprise his role as the blind assassin.
In an interview with Collider, Yen revealed that he is not only set to reprise his role, but is also in talks to direct the Caine spinoff himself:
I think both the fans, as well as the studio, want this to happen, and we'll see. I don't know. I can only tell you that much. But yes, we are talking, and we are talking intimately. We'll see what happens. But at the same time, I hold responsibility as well as a pressure that I don't want to ruin the franchise. I try to do my best to bring something fresh to the franchise itself. I don't want to bring down the expectations for the fans. I try to do my best, like always.

The upcoming Caine movie could make John Wick history. Donnie Yen recently shared that he is in talks to direct his character's spinoff movie, which would mark the first time that a John Wick movie was directed by its main star.

"It is true," the actor confirmed after being told that franchise architect Chad Stahelski had previously mentioned Yen potentially stepping behind the camera. Donnie Yen, fresh off his critically acclaimed performance as the blind assassin Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, has confirmed that he may be doing more than just starring in a spin-off based on the character. Sixty-one-year-old martial arts legend Donnie Yen may not be a spring chicken anymore (even his Iron Monkey days are behind him), but the “Ip Man” star is still committed to fighting bad guys with the best of them. Exhibit A: “The Prosecutor,” a solid genre hybrid in which Yen directs himself as a hero cop who decides to become Hong Kong’s most righteous lawyer in order to personally seal the cracks in the region’s legal system. So begins the rare movie that could accurately be described as a “bone-crunching courtroom thriller,” as Yen’s character adopts an uncommonly hands-on approach to arguing his first big case.

Donnie Yen was incredible as the blind assassin Caine in Keanu Reeves’ fourth John Wick film. He even landed a spin-off movie for his character, announced by Lionsgate last year. His filming experience in John Wick 4 was far safer, considering that he sustained some serious injuries during his stunt in other films.

In particular, Yen recalled that his worst on-set accident happened when he filmed alongside fellow actor Jet Li. Interestingly, Yen was injured twice when he filmed with Li, with the movies taking place a decade apart. In both instances, he got accidentally hit by Li and saw blood coming out of his face.

Maxtime Pictures’ “Her Story,” a comedy-drama film told from a largely female perspective, topped the mainland China box office for the fourth consecutive weekend.

Data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway showed “Her Story” sliding from its previous weekend’s showing by earning RMB52.1 million ($7.3 million) between Friday and Sunday. Steven Soderbergh's 2001 Las Vegas heist movie "Ocean's Eleven" is a whole lot of fun. Taking cues from the original 1960 film of the same name, which starred the Rat Pack as various skilled criminals working with con artist and thief Danny Ocean, "Ocean's Eleven" is one of the ultimate heist flicks of all time. A big part of what makes it work, aside from Soderbergh's skilled direction and a whip-smart script (courtesy of Soderbergh and co-writer Ted Griffin), is the incredible cast who surround George Clooney's version of Danny Ocean. John Wick: Chapter 4 is the series' biggest success to date. It even topped the hype of the original film, which is very rare for a franchise. With the success of John Wick: Chapter 4, it's clear that there's a demand for more from Chad Stahelski's John Wick universe. He has built a world that's too big to be contained in only four films. However, with Baba Yaga's adventure coming to an end in the series' fourth installment, making a fifth movie that centers around Keanu Reeve's titular character doesn't seem like the best way forward at this point.
Stahelski has no interest in topping the fourth film, but the need to expand the John Wick universe is there. Donnie Yen's Caine was an audience hit upon John Wick: Chapter 4's premiere in 2023, proving to not only be a worthy adversary to Keanu Reeves' deadly assassin, but also providing comic relief and some heartfelt moments relating to his daughter. Hot Toys even unveiled a new figure of Yen's Caine before anyone involved with the film provided any information. In an entertainment industry dominated by fantastical blockbusters which often have blatant disregard for physics or reality, you could argue that the "John Wick" franchise might be one of the most cartoonishly fantastical. From the comical way in which every person in New York City seems to be a professional assassin, to the existence of magical bulletproof suits that completely stop the momentum of any projectile, to the many incredible stunts that feel taken out of a Looney Tunes cartoon, the "John Wick" franchise is very close to feeling like a live-action anime. It helps that the ending of "John Wick: Chapter 4" was actually inspired by a classic anime, but now, the franchise is quite literally becoming an anime.
