ScreenSkills’ refreshed five-year strategy offers the film and TV industry “more coherent” and comprehensive support, according to its chief executive.

Laura Mansfield told Screen’s sister site, Broadcast that the refreshed strategy, which centres collaborative partnerships with other industry bodies as well as offering greater transparency in its governance and work, was “wanted and needed” by the industry.

ScreenSkills Teams With BBC, Channel 4 on Five-Year Plan to Boost U.K. Screen Industry Workforce

ScreenSkills, the U.K.’s screen industry skills body, has unveiled an ambitious five-year strategy aimed at developing a robust workforce to support the nation’s £13.48 billion ($17.4 billion) screen sector.

The organization’s blueprint, which follows recommendations from the Screen Sectors Skills Task Force in 2023, emphasizes data-driven decision making and strategic partnerships with industry heavyweights including the BBC and Channel 4.

The strategy addresses five core areas: skills needs identification, access to training, strategic partnerships, equity and diversity initiatives, and future-proofing the workforce. Special attention will be paid to emerging technologies and the games industry, with ScreenSkills partnering with U.K. Interactive Entertainment (Ukie) to build crossover skills between gaming, digital media, and TV.

In the West Midlands, ScreenSkills has partnered with the BBC and Create Central on a Skills Accelerator cluster program, now entering its second year. The BBC is also collaborating with ScreenSkills on research to better understand industry entry points and career pathways.

UK training body ScreenSkills has launched a new five-year strategy which includes plans to partner with the BBC and industry body Create Central to identify and tackle “regional skills gaps” in the UK.

The ScreenSkills five-year plan was launched this morning and sets out multiple objectives the body will focus on to improve the UK’s film and TV environment and create a more “inclusive and agile workforce.”

In its partnership with the BBC and Create Central, ScreenSkills said it would map skills gaps across the UK and use that research to “inform future training needs in the creative content sector.”

Other headline objectives in the strategy include plans for a new research report co-commissioned by BBC and ScreenSkills to explore entry-level opportunities and barriers to working in the creative industries.

Aditionally, ScreenSkills has commissioned what it has described as a “comprehensive study of the UK’s film and TV...
