Lionsgate raises a glass to the first look at Johnny Depp in character for Marc Webb’s Day Drinker
Image
Some could say it’s too early in the day for a drink, but it’s the right time somewhere. Today, Lionsgate is clinking glasses with Marc Webb’s upcoming crime thriller Day Drinker by introducing a first look at Johnny Depp’s character in the film. Production for Day Drinker is underway, with Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz reteaming for the fourth time.

Lionsgate’s image of Johnny Depp for Day Drinker presents the iconic actor in a way you might not expect. In the picture, a bearded Johnny Depp leans against a bartop while holding a chilled beverage. Depp’s character has piercing blue eyes, an undershirt to match, and a navy-colored vest that gives him a distinguished look. Depp’s beard and long hair appear gray with age, though he wears it exceptionally well.

According to Lionsgate’s official description, Day Drinker tells the story of a...

‘Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness’ Review: Johnny Depp’s Return to Directing Yields a Bland Biopic of a Tortured Artist
Image
Johnny Depp hasn’t taken a directorial credit on a feature film (his 50-minute music video “Unloveable” doesn’t count) since he presented The Brave in Cannes in 1997, and that did not go well. Given that unhappy experience, you have to wonder what it was about Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness — a portrait of Amedeo Modigliani, a painter and sculptor famous for his talent as well as his taste for drugs, debauchery and scandalizing the straights — might have lured the actor to pick up the virtual megaphone again.

Perhaps Depp saw in Modigliani a kindred spirit? After all, Depp too is famous for his talent but also his proclivity for indulgence, which was brought into an especially glaring, unflattering light over the course of his bitter courtroom battle with his ex, Amber Heard. Still, there are many other wild, druggy geniuses or genius-adjacent types he could have...

It’s Sad to Imagine That Johnny Depp Wasn’t Expecting Any Producers to Work With Him Even After Beating Amber Heard in Court
Image
Johnny Depp has returned to the role of a director after 27 years in the upcoming film Modì – Three Days on the Wing of Madness. Al Pacino first approached Depp about the project in 1997 when they were filming Donnie Brasco together. When Pacino asked him to direct the film amidst his court battle with Amber Heard, he was quite surprised.

The Tourist actor couldn’t believe the film was happening until he landed in Hungary for the shoot. It happened around the time when public support turned in his favor after he filed a defamation case against Heard. Depp’s last film as a director was the 1997 film The Brave, starring him and Marlon Brando.

Producers of Johnny Depp’s ‘Modi’ Explain Why He Was the Perfect Director for the Surprisingly Lighthearted ‘Anti-Biopic’
Image
Johnny Depp’s “Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness” world premieres at the San Sebastian Film Festival this week, decades after Al Pacino, who brought the project to Depp, first saw a play that inspired the cinematic adaptation.

An official synopsis for “Modi” reads: “A seventy-two-hour whirlwind in the life of bohemian artist Amedeo Modigliani, known as Modi to his friends, follows a chaotic series of events through the streets of war-torn Paris in 1916. On the run from the police, his desire to end his career and leave the city is dismissed by fellow artists Maurice Utrillo, Chaim Soutine and Modi’s muse, Beatrice Hastings. Modi seeks advice from his art dealer and friend, Leopold Zborowski — however, after a night of hallucinations, the chaos in Modi’s mind reaches a crescendo when faced with an American collector, Maurice Gangnat, who has the power to change his life.”

‘Depp V Heard’ Episode 3 Recap & Ending, Explained: What Did The Unsealed Documents Reveal?
Image
In episode 3 of the Netflix docu-series Depp V Heard, the trial concluded with the jury’s decision. Given the evidence gathered by Depp and the inconsistency in Amber’s statements, people easily predicted the trial’s result. However, the documentary series maintained a neutral stance and revealed significant legal loopholes that mirrored the trial’s conflicting aspects. Even as the trial ended, the public remained perplexed about the truth, struggling to decide whom to trust.

However, the audacity that Amber and Depp both displayed by openly portraying their conflicting and vulnerable accounts to the media deserved applause. Unlike many celebrities who avoid such bold steps and opt for out-of-court settlements to avoid airing their dirty laundry in front of fans, this renowned rivalry between Depp and Heard lets each of them uncover the other’s flaws and present them to the world.

Zack Snyder at an event for Sucker Punch (2011)
Minamata Review: Johnny Depp Finds a Role Fitting For His Talents in Photographer Biopic
Zack Snyder at an event for Sucker Punch (2011)
A lot of things helped make this past Oscars ceremony an infamous affair—the most innocuous being the addition of two online popularity contests seemingly devoid of any real checks and balances to prevent them from becoming a ballot-stuffing battle royale between fandoms. The Zack Snyder contingent (unsurprisingly) proved victorious with both, but there was an intriguing dark horse by way of the Johnny Depp-starring and -produced Minamata. Was it genuine? Who knows? Its third-place finish could have been as much about Depp stans seeking redemption for their beloved yet problematic celebrity post-Grindelwald firing as trolls looking to force the Academy into putting his name back onto their lips despite the film having an almost non-existent release. Either way, it’s become a circus attraction.

Director Andrew Levitas’ biopic had its festival premiere at Berlinale 2020 just as Covid was ramping up to shut down the world. From there came theatrical delays,...

Johnny Depp and Minami in Minamata (2020)
‘Minamata’ Film Review: Johnny Depp Photographs Environmental Disaster in Urgent Biopic
Johnny Depp and Minami in Minamata (2020)
The greatest power of the photographic image is its function in affecting social change, a phenomenon that only persists and grows with the proliferation of cameras in every hand at all times. But with great power comes great responsibility, they say, a conundrum explored in Andrew Levitas’ “Minamata,” the story of legendary photojournalist W. Eugene Smith and his experiences photographing the effect of toxic mercury poisoning in Japan.

Writers Levitas, David Kessler, Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman fudge the facts just a bit to craft this biopic of Smith, played here by a grizzled Johnny Depp, and the result is something akin to “Erin Brockovich” by way of “A Private War,” with a dash of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” for flavor. (Depp’s Smith has the same fondness for accessories and methamphetamine that his Hunter S. Thompson did.)

We pick up with Smith in 1971; he’s feuding with...

Johnny Depp Movie ‘Minamata’ Is Finally Getting A U.S. Release, But Not With MGM
Image
Exclusive: Johnny Depp movie Minamata is finally getting a U.S. release, we can reveal, but not from MGM which had previously acquired the film.

Iervolino and Lady Bacardi Entertainment (Ilbe) are now teaming up with Samuel Goldwyn Films to give the movie a North American release in theaters beginning December 15. The platformed release is due to extend across U.S. and Canada into 2022 and the team are looking to position it for awards consideration.

This update comes after the film’s director, Andrew Levitas, complained earlier this year that MGM was “burying” Minamata due to Depp’s well publicized off-screen issues. You can read the filmmaker’s impassioned letter to the studio here. Depp also decried the non-release in an interview in August in which he said the film deserved to be seen but was shelved because he was being “boycotted” by Hollywood.

Johnny Depp Attends Karlovy Vary Film Festival in Support of ‘Crock of Gold’
Image
Despite an apparent last-minute sense of concern by Karlovy Vary fest organizers over international press coverage of Johnny Depp and his ongoing legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard over domestic abuse allegations, the rocker/actor/producer made his appearances without much fuss and introduced the docu he co-produced, “Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan” to welcoming crowds on Friday.

Depp’s other project at the Czech fest, the Japan-set thriller “Minamata,” filmed largely in Serbia in 2020, directed by Andrew Levitas and starring Depp as an alcoholic photojournalist, screens at Karlovy Vary’s Municipal Theater on Saturday, a historic 18th-century venue midway along the spa town’s ornate Promenade.

Johnny Depp Tells Court He Lost $650 Million in Movie Earnings
Image
Johnny Depp claims he discovered at a meeting with his accountant in 2016 that he had lost $650 million in movie earnings, immediately prior to an incident when he is alleged to have been violent toward his then wife Amber Heard, a court heard on Monday, the fifth day of his libel trial in London against the publisher of The Sun newspaper.

Depp is suing News Group Newspapers and journalist Dan Wootton for an article on The Sun website that described him as a “wife beater.” Depp denies that he was violent toward Heard, to whom he was married from 2015 to 2017.

At London’s Royal Courts of Justice, Depp was asked about events that occurred on the day of Heard’s 30th birthday celebration on April 21, 2016. Depp arrived at the party, at Eastern Columbia Building in Los Angeles, where the couple lived, two hours late.

His late arrival was due to the...
