The Sandman Season 1 Recap (Episodes 1-11): Everything To Know Before Season 2
Image
If comic books interest you, chances are that you have heard a thing or two about Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman and its impact on the literary subgenre. The series can be defined as a definitive, expansive modern lore that amalgamated world myths, which did more than just enrich DC Comics’ established world-building in the franchise’s heyday during the 80s and 90s. The Sandman saga also left a prominent mark on fiction as a whole in the way it assimilated genres, celebrated humanity through nuance, conflicts, and emotional depths, and tackled myriad themes, including freedom, identity, and trauma—through the lens of fantasy. Most of all, The Sandman is a treatise on storytelling—as dark, poetic, beautiful, tragic, and evergreen as stories can be. Is Netflix’s TV series adaptation able to capture the true essence of the comic series with all its beauty and brutality? Judging by the first season,...

“He’s a Big Feature”: Ryan Condal Teases Prince Daeron's Arrival in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3
Image
Finally. There is some hope regarding when we might return to Westeros to watch the Targaryen civil war continue to unfurl. Accompanied by a new look at Emma D'Arcy's Rhaenyra Targaryen, it has been announced that House of the Dragon Season 3 is officially in production. Showrunner Ryan Condal will be returning to help bring to life, as authentically as possible, the events in George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood. The coming season will most likely take on a more brutal face, as the Dance of Dragons gets ever more intense. This means the arrival of new characters to help drive the narrative further, and one of those new characters is Prince Daeron Targaryen, the third son and youngest son of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) and his second wife, Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke).

Daeron will be arriving from Oldtown to join his brother and mother in their...

House of the Dragon season 3 begins filming as two important new characters join cast
Image
It's official: HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon has begun filming on its third season. Last week we reported that Ryan Condal said on his podcast The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of that, "We are approaching the imminent launch of season 3, so it's full madness." He added that Daylight Savings time in England would happen "[j]ust before production starts." Since he previously said filming would get underway in March, that led us and many other fans to deduce that it would begin today, March 31. And it appears the tea leaves told it true.

We've had plenty of signs that filming was about to begin over the past few weeks. For example, we've seen images from Leavesden Studios of sets for the Battle of the Gullet and the city of Tumbleton. The show has been searching for physically fit sailors to serve as extras, presumably for the naval clash at the Gullet.

Billy Magnussen Joins ‘Elsbeth’ Season 2 [Exclusive]
Image
Billy Magnussen is on his way to give Carrie Preston a run for her money. Collider is excited to exclusively reveal that the Tony Award-nominated actor will be one of the last guest stars on the currently running second season of Elsbeth. His latest dip into television will see The Franchise alum step into the killer shoes of Roderick Bedford. Described to be just about as pretentious as his name, Roderick is a rich kid looking for a bit of an adrenaline rush when he decides to chase his itch for a thrill with a brutal and heartless kill. Magnussen adds his name to a star-studded lineup of guest performers that has previously included the likes of Nathan Lane (The Birdcage), Laurie Metcalf (Scream 2), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) and more. Right now, it isn’t clear which episode Magnussen will be dropping by for, but no matter the case,...

“I Thought, ‘I’m Home’”: Mark Hamill Explains How His Role In Mike Flanagan’s Netflix Horror Show Changed His Career
Image
Mark Hamill was and remains best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy. He would reprise the role for the three Disney sequels from 2015 to 2019, but he's also played a de-aged Luke in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Outside of his time spent in a galaxy far, far away, however, Hamill has taken on a variety of roles big and small, across many genres.

In addition to Luke, Hamill is widely associated with the role of the Joker, a character he has voiced in various animated DC Comics projects and video games, including Batman: The Killing Joke (2016). Voice acting work, in general, remains a major part of Hamill's acting career, but he also continues to appear in front of the camera. One genre that Hamill has not worked very frequently in is horror, but that changed after he scored a meaty role in...

Wineville Review: Shadows in the Vineyard
Image
Wineville, the directorial debut of former Baywatch actress Brande Roderick, takes place in the hot Californian desert of the 1970s. It’s a dark story of family secrets, and pain passed down from generation to generation. The movie is about Tess Lott, a woman who has to face her traumatic past when she returns to her family’s failing farm after the death of her abusive father.

The story takes place in a barren Mojave Desert vineyard and is mostly about Tess’s hesitant trip home. She comes with her young son Walter to settle her father’s estate. She wants to sell the house quickly and get away from the memories of her childhood. But the vineyard isn’t just a collection of old farming tools; it also hides dark, dangerous secrets growing for decades like a poisonous vintage.

In a brave move, Roderick takes on both the director...

Steve Coogan’s Five Most Essential Comedy Performances
Image
If you’re able to get to London by January 25th, or to Dublin in February, you can still get yourself a seat to see Dr. Strangelove, adapted for the stage by The Thick of It creator Armando Iannucci and starring Iannucci’s frequent star, Steve Coogan. If you’re not? All you need is a Hulu login to see Coogan’s next most recent performance.

In this week’s episode of What We Do in the Shadows, Coogan débuts as Roderick Cravensworth, father to Matt Berry’s Laszlo — or, to be more precise, his ghost, Roderick having died more than a century ago. It’s reductive to say Roderick is the kind of father who would drive his son to rebel by embracing vampirism, but it might also be true: He’s pompous, he weasels his way into relationships far too quickly and he’s lightly emotionally abusive to...

Quantum Leaps: Timm Kröger on “The Universal Theory”
Image
The Universal Theory.Familiar names come loaded with certain sets of expectations, and so it was at last year’s Venice Film Festival, where the official competition was chock-full with the latest features from known quantities. One of the great pleasures of festivalgoing lies in the thrill of discovery, of stepping into a film unburdened by one’s mileage with a director’s previous work. In the 2023 competition, there was only one title that promised a leap into the dark.Timm Kröger was at the festival back in 2014 with his graduation film, The Council of Birds, which played in the Critics’ Week sidebar. The film wasn’t picked up for distribution, even in the director’s native Germany, and remains virtually impossible to see. Given the sheer ambition of his sophomore feature, it’s tempting to imagine that the intervening nine years had been spent readying The Universal Theory for production.

Mike Flanagans New TV Show Is The Haunting Season 3 Replacement Weve Been Waiting For
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Mike Flanagan has received an abundance of praise for his horrifying Netflix series, and although he won't be making a third season of his Haunting anthology, his 2023 series The Fall of the House of Usher is undoubtedly a strong replacement. In 2016, Mike Flanagan came to prominence with his film Ouija: Origin of Evil. In the intervening years, he has created some unforgettable Netflix horror projects such as Midnight Mass and The Midnight Club. However, Flanagan's most terrifying horror shows are The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor.

The Haunting series captured audiences' attention through disturbing content and haunted house atmospheres. The Haunting of Hill House is based on the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name, while The Haunting of Bly Manor is based on Henry James' The Turn of the Screw. There's demand for a third season,...

Ewan McGregor's $197M Fantasy Bomb Praised By VFX Artists Is One Of His Most Underrated Movies
Image
Ewan McGregor has starred in many great works of sci-fi and fantasy, but not all of his high-profile roles have garnered great success. Many fantasy movies are almost perfect but are missing certain elements that would set them apart from the best of the genre. Some of McGregor's projects fall into this category, even when their budget and visual effects are substantial and impressive. However, a film's box office performance doesn't necessarily mean that it's not worth watching. Revisiting some of McGregor's most underrated fantasy movies is a great opportunity for fans to rediscover his work.

Certain fantasy movies bomb at the box office but have comebacks, and Jack the Giant Slayer is no exception. This could be because the budget for the movie was so high that recouping it proved difficult. Conversely, the film's marketing might have failed to convey its message properly, meaning viewers were confused by...
