To independent filmmaker Derek Ting, Hong Kong is the place that made his dream come true. It is the city where he and partner Joyce Yung began a decade-long ride in filmmaking and production with the founding of Random Art Workshop, which has produced three narrative feature films and a range of creative content.

A decade into navigating Asia and the West throughout a globe-trotting filmmaking journey, the company strives to grow bigger with greater ambition to turn future projects into new vehicles that would allow the company’s founders to give back to the city while supporting international productions from a global perspective.

“We want to be the global leader in telling universal impactful stories by guiding creators to maximize a project’s vision and potential leveraging technology and adaptability to optimize workflow,” Yung tells Variety.

“I understand the Western taste and I also have the sensitivity towards the Eastern culture.

Work in Progress strand will also return for a second year.

The Iffam Project Market (Ipm) has unveiled 14 films that will be presented during the three-day event in Macao, which runs December 6-8.

They include supernatural revenge thriller Nocebo from Irish director Lorcan Finnegan, who’s Vivarium was in Cannes Critic’s Week this year, and The Day And Night Of Brahma, a family drama by South African director Sheetal Magan, whose short Paraya was presented in Cannes Directors Fortnight.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this weekend is shaping up to be even quieter at the box office than last week was.

The dog days of August are just that at the U.S. box office.

This weekend, a trio of smaller offerings enter the fray — The Weinstein Co.'s animated Leap!, martial arts pic Birth of the Dragon and All Saints, a faith-based film from Sony's Affirm label that is only opening in 700-plus locations. Even if they do solid business in their own right, tracking shows Leap! grossing the most of the three, or $4 million-$5 million, as summer revenue slips even farther behind from last year.

While the action-thriller The Hitman's Bodyguard ended up managing an easy opening weekend box office win just a few days ago, it also set a record for box office futility, with the lowest-grossing overall weekend to date in 2017. As the summer movie season comes to an end this weekend, that record may be broken, with three under-promoted movies hitting theaters, the animated comedy Leap!, the Bruce Lee biopic Birth of the Dragon and the religious drama All Saints, which are expected to open in 2,000 theaters or less. We're predicting that The Hitman's Bodyguard will actually come out on top again this weekend with a projected $12.5 million as the disappointing summer season comes to a close.

I was a huge fan of the first film in what now looks to be a burgeoning new martial arts film franchise. The Man With the Iron Fists was everything I love about martial arts movie and was obviously a labour of love for its star and Wu_Tang Clan member RZA. Sadly, despite the out-pouring of love from wuxia fans and internet geeks like myself, the film did not perform as well as I’m sure the studio would’ve liked. But that doesn’t stop the franchise from continuing as a direct-to-market series – and so we have The Man With the Iron Fists 2.

This time round Thaddeus (RZA) washes ashore...

After spending a lifetime watching and studying classic martial arts films, Wu Tang Clan's RZA got to finally make his own kung fu movie with 2012's The Man with the Iron Fists, which he directed, co-wrote, produced and starred in. The actor-filmmaker returns to reprise his role as the title character Thaddeus, while co-writing and producing the sequel The Man with the Iron Fists 2. I had the good fortune to speak with the actor filmmaker over the phone, before this sequel arrives on Blu-ray and DVD April 14 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

The sequel picks up long after the events of The Man with the Iron Fists, where Thaddeus is found near death, literally drifting past a 19th Century village where he is saved by a miner's (Dustin Nguyen) family. As he heals from his wounds, Thaddeus expresses his desire to find peace, but it becomes quickly clear...

When RZA – co-founder of Wu-Tang Clan – stepped behind the lens for the first time back in 2012, he introduced the moviegoing audience to a pulse-pounding actioner in the form of The Man with the Iron Fists. Fast forward a little over two years and we’re now standing on the verge of the sequel’s arrival on DVD and Blu-Ray, and We Got This Covered has an exclusive clip to share with you for The Man with the Iron Fists 2.

Yes, you heard right people we said Triple D! Zomb'asians: Thongs of the Dead is a horror/comedy fresh in the works. The film is being directed by Simon Yin from a screenplay by Russell Wait from an original idea by Russell Wait and Gary Gibbons. This sounds like a lot of glorious boobified fun and I can't wait for more news on this flick!

Here in Hong Kong, news has just surfaced of an upcoming independent film project that immediately caught my eye, not least because it claims to prominently feature legions of ample-chested undead as well as plentiful gore and comedy kung-fu hijinks. 

While Zomb'asians: Thongs Of The Dead is still very much in the pre-production phase (no cast members have yet been named), the official website states that the script is finished and they will soon be running camera tests and looking to begin shooting a concept trailer "in the next few days." The film is to be directed by Simon Yin, who has been making quite a name for himself in Hong Kong over the past few years, helming a number of short films, music videos, TV commercials and the like, while friend of the site Mike Leeder is on board as one of the film's producers.

Jennifer Thym is a Hong Kong filmmaker with a genre-bending web series she defines as ‘magical realism’. Lumina features a female lead in a strangely sci-fi modern world where mirrors lead to romance and corporate greed, and a supernatural force called The Mirrorati that are to be feared. Thym developed her web series with some immersive storylines, deep back stories, and a long-term plan that could include a feature film, graphic novelizations, and a Mmorpg (massively multiplayer online role playing game.)

“In TV terms, I think it's closest to Lost,” says Thym about Lumina's genre, “a serial thriller interwoven with fantastical elements and real world conspiracies...”

Lumina as a series is unlike anything else out there right now on the web or on television, despite having similarities to Lost. And the name ‘Lumina’ for her lead character is unorthodox as well. Maybe that’s because it is something Thym heard in a dream.
