The director lineup for House of the Dragon tells us about the shape of season 3
Image
The third season of House of the Dragon is now in full production, meaning everyone will be putting on their white-blonde wigs and mounting their dragon bucks. We won't see the new episodes for a while, but we're getting more information everyday.

For instance, @westerosies — which always has its ear to the ground for news about everyone's favorite dragon show — has reported on the director lineup for next season. According to them, here's who's directing each of the third season's eight episodes:

Episode 1: Loni PeristereEpisode 2: Clare KilnerEpisode 3: Clare KilnerEpisode 4: Clare KilnerEpisode 5: Nina Lopez-CorradoEpisode 6: Loni PeristereEpisode 7: Nina Lopez-CorradoEpisode 8: Andrij Parekh

First of all, yes, it's disappointing that we're only getting eight episodes instead of 10 like we had in the first season. At some point, I hope studios will figure out that giving fans more episodes closer together in time is infinitely preferable...

Apple Reports Soft iPhone Sales In Holiday Quarter, But Still Tops Wall Street Forecasts
Image
Apple reported soft sales of its flagship iPhone during the holiday quarter, but still managed to top Wall Street forecasts for revenue and earnings per share.

Total revenue inched up 4% year-over-year in the period ended December 31 (the company’s first quarter of fiscal 2025), reaching $124.3 billion, a company record. The revenue figure was a hair better than Wall Street analysts’ consensus estimate, but earnings per share of $2.40 came in well ahead of analysts’ forecasts. After Apple issued a less-than-scintillating 2025 estimate for revenue late last year, Wall Streeters kept their expectations for the quarter well in check.

Product revenue increased 1.6% to a shade less than $98 billion, though sales of the iPhone declined by 1%. Services revenue climbed 14% to $26.3 billion.

Sales of the iPhone 16 have not been as robust as Apple or its investors had hoped when the device was introduced in September 2024. The category-defining handset still accounts for roughly half of the company’s revenue.

‘Manorathangal’ Episode 5 “Vilpana” Recap And Ending Explained
Image
We were made privy to another dysfunctional marriage in Vilpana, the fifth film of the Mt Vasudevan Nair anthology, Manorathangal. I say “another” because it is similar to the central theme of this story we saw in Kazcha, too, where Sudha decided to separate from her husband. One major difference between the protagonists of the two films was that Sudha was financially independent and had a lot of other things in her life to look forward to, whereas the protagonist of Vilpana, Mrs. Parekh, was a homemaker, and her boredom drove her even more mad.

Spoiler Alert

A man named Sunil Das, who was a journalist, got to know about a sale where furniture and other items were being sold. He called the number given in the newspaper advertisement, and the lady who picked up the phone at the other end seemed to be very rude and not at all...

‘Manorathangal’ Review: Priyadarshan Assembles All Of Malayalam Cinema For A Boring Anthology Film
Image
The Malayalam film industry has been having a splendid 2024 on the big screen so far. They started things off with Aattam, which showed that 12 Angry Men can be remade in the 21st century, and it’ll still be relevant. Abraham Ozler wasn’t a critical success, but it did quite well at the box office. Meanwhile, Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Malaikottai Vaaliban didn’t make a dent at the box office, but personally speaking, it was nothing short of a visual masterpiece. Anweshippin Kandethum, featuring Tovino Thomas, was a massive success, given its budget. Then there was the Barbenheimer of the Year, Premalu and Bramayugam, which impressed critics and brought in the big bucks. Manjummel Boys knocked it out of the park by bringing forth an unbelievable story. The same can be said about Aadujeevitham. Aavesham is currently the frontrunner for the “Movie of the Year” title. Ullozhukku and Paradise were well-received,...

Nielsen has hired a former Public Group director to serve in a newly-created role.

Akhil Parekh is joining the audience measurement company as its Chief Solutions Officer of Digital Product, a role that will involve building a bridge between traditional and digital media solutions for ad buyers and other clients.

The assignment comes at a time when marketers are increasingly moving their ad spending from traditional broadcast and cable channels toward connected TV platforms, as well as linear and on-demand streaming.

“As we continue to evolve with the industry and focus our efforts on streaming and our convergent TV strategy, we must continue to make strategic investments in innovation,” Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao said in a statement on Tuesday. “Akhil will play a critical role in helping develop the products and strategies our clients need to succeed in the advertising ecosystem. Pulling a prized bottle of, say, a 2018 Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon out of the cellar to relish with friends can be thrilling. But think about the bragging rights of pouring your own blend, which you personally crafted at a famed winery in the heart of Tuscany or in the hills of Argentina.

Members of The Vines, a private travel club dedicated to the art of winemaking, have the opportunity to learn and craft wines alongside world-renowned virtuosos. There are two tiers of membership: Explorer requires a $100,000 initiation fee with annual dues of $6,000 (includes a $2,500 credit for the experience of choice), and Adventurer involves a $20,000 initiation fee with annual dues of $2,500.

Over three or four days you’ll stroll vineyards, gain inside knowledge about the craft, inhale the enchanting aromas inside renowned barrel rooms and sip treasured wines. Members also have the option of creating their own personal barrel (25 cases, priced...

The HeyUGuys Round-Up: International Film Festival of India 2022
Image
As the UK readies itself for a bitterly cold winter, we had the immense pleasure of being whisked away to the sub-continent, as a guest as the annual International Film of Festival of India to spend a week indulging and celebrating cinema that this film-crazy nation has to offer.

The 53rd edition, which took place in Goa, ran between the 20th to the 28th of November, and had an eclectic array of films, spotlighting Indian productions and filmmakers, as well a films from around the world, with a focus on French cinema, and Israeli content in particular – and what transpired was an impressive and compelling programme.

During our visit during the latter half of the festival, we saw a couple of contemporary productions, kicking things off with the visually striking period drama Qala, a Netflix production which has made its way to the streaming platform just this week. It’s...

Just 4 women have won Best Drama Directing at the Emmys: Will it get to 5 this year?
Image
Last year, Jessica Hobbs became just the fourth woman to win the Best Drama Directing Emmy when she prevailed for helming “War,” the Season 4 finale of “The Crown.” This year, three women have a chance to grow that number to five and make it back-to-back female champs for the first time ever.

Karyn Kusama (the “Yellowjackets” pilot), Lorene Scafaria (“Too Much Birthday” from “Succession”) and Cathy Yan (“The Disruption” from “Succession”) are vying for the prize alongside former champ Jason Bateman (“A Hard Way to Go” from “Ozark”), Hwang Dong-hyuk, Mark Mylod (“All the Bells Say” from “Succession”) and Ben Stiller (“The We We Are” from “Severance”). Kusama, Scafaria and Yan are looking to join Hobbs, Karen Arthur (“Cagney & Lacey,” 1985) and Mimi Leder and Reed Morano as the handful of women to win the category.

That number is embarrassingly small, but voters have been nominating more women in recent years.

Best Drama Directing Emmy 2022: ‘Squid Game’ or ‘Severance’ could overtake 3 ‘Succession’ episodes
Image
This year’s Emmy nominations for Best Drama Directing are interesting in that, unlike in Best Drama Writing, there is no clear frontrunner. Yes, HBO’s “Succession” is likely going to come out on top with wins for writing and series, but the problem it may have in directing is the issue of vote-splitting, as it has three episodes in contention. Therefore, be on the lookout for the other shows like Netflix’s “Squid Game” or Apple’s “Severance,” which could prevail for their directorial choices and lavish sceneries.

Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Drama Directing Emmy 2022 racetrack odds:

“Squid Game” — 5/1 odds

“Severance” (“The We We Are” by Ben Stiller) — 11/2 odds

“Succession” (“All The Bells Say” by Mark Mylod) — 6/1 odds

“Ozark” (“A Hard Way To Go” by Jason Bateman) — 13/2 odds

“Yellowjackets” (“Pilot” by Karyn Kusama) — 13/2 odds

“Succession” (“Too Much Birthday” by Lorene Scafaria) — 13/2 odds

“Succession” (“The Disruption” by...
