When Ozzy Osbourne brought Metallica on tour in 1986, he noticed his young opening act blasting Black Sabbath in their dressing room and covering his old band’s songs in soundchecks. Osbourne’s first assumption, he said later, was that Metallica were mocking him. He was stunned to learn they were actually displaying their hero worship, and trying to coax him onstage with them.
As discussed in the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now, Osbourne — who died July 22 at the age of 76 — could be touchingly insecure for a beloved and wildly influential metal legend.

Morgan Wallen has dropped a remix of his single, “Miami,” featuring Lil Wayne and Rick Ross.
“Miami” was originally released as part of Wallen’s recent LP, I’m the Problem, and incorporates elements of Keith Whitley’s 1985 hit “Miami, My Amy.” The song was produced by Charlie Handsome, with the remix featuring new verses from Weezy and Ross.
Wallen teased the idea of adding a rapper onto the song during an interview in April. “It seemed like it could use a rapper on there,” he said of the track.

Hip-hop is no longer solely youth culture; it’s just culture, with cross-generational scenes full of artists intent on capturing their era’s zeitgeist. But Raekwon The Chef’s latest solo album, The Emperor’s New Clothes, was unquestionably tailored for the 35-and-up hip-hop heads who descended upon Madison Square Garden to see the Wu-Tang Clan’s possible final hometown show last week. There are no stunt features or out-of-touch Gen Z reaches here, just a 17-track dose of raw, New York City hip-hop.

Sabrina Carpenter is as good as any current pop star at cultivating controversy and attention — the latest evidence was the now-subsided furor over her absurd Man’s Best Friend album cover, which seems to take cues from Spinal Tap’s Smell the Glove. “She’s leaning into it and laughing about it at the same time,” says Angie Martoccio, who profiled Carpenter for her recent Rolling Stone cover story — which revealed that image aside, the singer’s true obsession is music.

Social media fans are viciously roasting Drake for his seemingly fake six-pack abs.
In a shirtless mirror selfie Drake posted on Saturday, the singer showed off a set of extremely chiseled abs that many viewers have clocked as the result of plastic surgery.
In the photo, Drake blocks his face with his phone and shows off a large array of liquor bottles on the bar in front of him. He additionally posted a short clip of himself jogging shirtless through the park, and captioned the post, “I’m wide awake for the nights that separate the type who get to it ’til they get it right from the type who just…type.”
Despite Drake’s confident poses and caption, the comments were quickly overflowing with quips about his suspiciously toned muscles, with one person joking, “Ordered abs from temu n forgot to add shoulders n [triceps] lol.” Another posited, “Arm definition surgery is next month?...

What if Bruce Springsteen had followed up his synth-and-drum-machine-driven 1994 hit “Streets of Philadelphia” with a whole album largely in that vein? What if he’d dropped an album of Great American Songbook-style ballads instead of 2017’s Western Stars? Springsteen’s just-released boxed set Tracks II: The Lost Albums is packed with seven albums’ worth of alternate realities and musical surprises, offering a reminder of just how much he’s capable of outside of his stadium-shaking work with the E Street Band.

The prosecution is about to wrap up its case during the ongoing trial against P Diddy at the Manhattan Federal Court. During the court proceedings, many celebrities were mentioned by name. However, Cassie Ventura, Kid Cudi, and Dawn Richard were the only celebrities who testified in court. Nicole Blank Becker, who represented R. Kelly, explained why the prosecution did not bring more celebrities to the stand.
Diddy is facing five counts of serious charges, including one count of racketeering conspiracy, two counts of s*x trafficking, and two counts of transportation to engage in pr*stitution. If charged, the hip-hop mogul is looking at life in prison.

There was an odd symmetry to the near-simultaneous deaths of Sly Stone and Brian Wilson at age 82 last week. “Both of them poets of summer,” Rob Sheffield says in the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now. “Both chroniclers of the American dream in California. To get her music back, first Taylor Swift had to re-record it. After a consortium led by Scooter Braun bought the rights to the masters for her first six albums in 2019, much to Swift’s displeasure, she hatched a simple, if wildly labor-intensive plan: Make new Taylor’s Versions of her catalog available, and then ask her massive fanbase to stream them instead of the originals.
No one had ever tried anything like it before, but fans complied by the millions. The strategy worked exactly as intended, devaluing the masters...

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ heavily pregnant ex-girlfriend for a decade, Cassie Ventura, stepped down from the her arduous week on the witness stand at a lower Manhattan federal courthouse on Friday afternoon, having recounting in often harrowing detail the alleged coercive control, manipulation, blackmail, drug use and unwanted sex with male prostitutes that she says he forced her into for his sexual pleasure. Yet despite the darkness — now very public knowledge — in their relationship, toward the end of her sensational, sad and, at times, salacious testimony, Ventura told Combs’ attorney when asked point blank that, despite the violence and many allegations she detailed this week, she does not have animosity toward Combs.
“I don’t hate him,” Ventura told attorney Anna Estevao. When asked on the stand if she still has love left for the beleaguered rap and fashion mogul, she replied, “I have love for the past, and what it was.

How does a truly terrible song end up an otherwise flawless album? Blame ego-appeasing band-politics concessions, drug-fueled studio experiments, songwriters working through a few too many personal demons, and artists who just ran out of songwriting steam a little too soon. In any case, Rolling Stone‘s Andy Greene recently found 50 examples of classic albums with at least one bad song, and he goes through his entire list with host Brian Hiatt on the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now.

When he was featured in Future and Metro Boomin’s Like That in 2024, Lamar never thought he would dive into a full diss track back-and-forth with Drake. The Toronto-based rapper responded with Push Ups and Taylor Made Freestyle.

It would be amazing to see Drake rebound with a banger of an album after getting ethered for a year straight by an objectively better rapper, Kendrick Lamar. Too bad that’s not what has happened with the artist’s latest offering, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U.
Drizzy’s new Valentine’s Day record recasts the Toronto rapper as a lover, not a fighter. Notably, on a track titled “Gimme A Hug,” he declares the feud with Lamar over (“Fuck a rap beef, I’m tryna get the party lit”), even though that’s not really how these things work.
PartyNextDoor, Ovo stalwart and generally unremarkable, plays second fiddle on this long, bloated, 21-song snoozer. In Drake’s world, it’s quantity over quality. You don’t have to make great music; you just have to make a lot of music. It makes you wonder what was left on the cutting...

Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance at Sunday’s Super Bowl was the most-watched in history, with more than 133 million people tuning in — and it also may have been the most uncompromising. In a slot that every previous artist has reserved mostly for greatest hits, Lamar only played bits of two older songs, focusing instead on his excellent new album, Gnx, and his Drake-eviscerating smash, “Not Like Us.”

Rapper Snoop Dogg has responded to haters after fierce backlash over his performance at Donald Trump’s inauguration ball.
“For all the hate, I’m going to answer with love,” Snoop said in a recent Instagram video, smoking and listening to The Winans’ “Ain’t No Need To Worry” in his car. “Y’all can’t hate enough. I love too much. Get your life right. Stop worrying about mine. I’m cool, I’m together. Still a black man. Still 100% black. All out ’til you ball out or ’til you fall out.”
Snoop Dogg performed at the Crypto Ball, held at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium two days before Trump’s inauguration. The celebration was attended by Trump boosters and cryptocurrency market leaders. Alongside Snoop Dogg, rappers Soulja Boy and Rick Ross also performed. However, the ire was directed at Snoop, who has been vocally critical of Trump.

Since Kendrick Lamar took aim at Drake with his verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That” in the spring of 2024, the Compton and Canadian rappers have traded dozens of dark verses (and counting) in a beef unlike any before it. Since then, there have been accusations of domestic abuse and sexual misconduct lobbed back and forth, a massive victory lap of a concert in Los Angeles, legal filings made, and more. While the pair’s War of Words hit its biggest crescendo in May with Kendrick Lamar’s...

They say in this business, you never really know who’s got your back until you’re in the fire. And when the heat came down on Diddy, the world watched closely. Arrested on charges that have rocked the music world, Sean Combs found himself in the middle of a storm, with his empire seemingly teetering on the edge.
But while some of his closest peers remained silent, two voices rose in his defense: Kanye West and Suge Knight. Both men have never been shy about their opinions, and in this case, they didn’t hold back.

The music mogul’s arrest on charges of s*x trafficking and racketeering raised eyebrows from all corners. In times like these, we all get a little too comfortable with keeping quiet, don’t we? It’s easy to turn the other cheek,...

In the beginning, R.E.M. would play anywhere that would have them, from pizza parlors to gay bars to frat parties. For all the arty elusiveness of their early music, the band that would end up setting the template for the Nineties alt-rock boom was hungrier and more strategic than it might have seemed — which is just one of many revelations in Peter Ames Carlin’s illuminating new book, The Name of This Band Is R.E.M.: A Biography.

Rapper-turned-mogul Snoop Dogg is feeling the heat for performing at the Crypto Ball, an event in Washington D.C. preceding Donald Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration.
When video surfaced of the rapper performing at the Friday night event, held at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium and hosted by former PayPal COO David Sacks, fans expressed anger and shock online. The Shade Room posted a video of Snoop — along with Rick Ross and Soulja Boy — on stage performing, and the comments section was filled with outrage over The Voice judge’s decision. “This is culturally embarrassing and disrespectful asf,” one reaction read. “Not a check in the world worth selling my soul to the Devil…” another commenter remarked.
Former CNN anchor Don Lemon covered the performance on his live stream, Lemon Live at 5, wondering aloud whether Snoop and other Black hip hop artists are “sellouts [or] grifters who only care about a dollar?...
