Blair Witch (2016) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Adam Wingard at an event for V/H/S (2012)
Our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series often covers older films. You may have noticed that we have a particular fondness for movies from the 1980s. But occasionally we cover more recent releases as well, and the movie we’re looking at with today’s episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was just released six years ago. The film in question is Blair Witch (watch it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above.

Directed by Adam Wingard from a screenplay written by Simon Barrett, Blair Witch is, of course, a follow-up to The Blair Witch Project. This one has the following synopsis:

A young man and his friends venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mystery surrounding his missing sister. Many believe her disappearance 17 years earlier is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch.

Netflix Renews Narcos Mexico For A Third Season
Today is a good day for fans of crime dramas as Netflix just renewed Narcos Mexico for a third season. The series, which was conceived as both a spiritual successor and a sequel to the original Narcos, sports an admirable 88% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating audiences will be happy to see it return to the small screen for yet another round of drug trading.

The show first aired on Netflix back in 2018. Starring Michael Peña alongside Diego Luna, Tenoch Huerta Mejía and Alyssa Diaz, it centers on the illegal drug trade in Mexico during the origin of the modern day War on Drugs. Tension arises from economic and personal conflict between various cartels, as well as the government forces trying to apprehend them.

‘Blair Witch’ Review
Stars: James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Corbin Reid, Brandon Scott, Wes Robinson, Valorie Curry | Written by Simon Barrett | Directed by Adam Wingard

There are certain horror movies that I’ve totally obsessed about, one of them being The Blair Witch Project. I watched the documentaries released around it and loved the mythology that extended the enjoyment of the film. This is why I was excited when Blair Witch was revealed. Now that we finally have a true sequel to the original, can it live up to what we expect?

The main question about Blair Witch has to be, how could it happen again? The answer is a glimpse on some found footage showing what appears to be Heather from the original movie. Getting together a group of friends with the latest video technology, James (James Allen McCune) decides to venture into the Black Hills Forest in search of his sister.

Film Review: ‘Blair Witch’ Takes a Familiar Trail to a Dead End
Chicago – The forest is an elusive environment that can hold hope for one person or isolation for another. You can enter the forest for some Thoreauvian wisdom, but end up being engulfed by its overwhelming monotony. As we revisit the world of “Blair Witch”, we are reminded that the found footage genre has come a long way from its humble origins, but perhaps some footage is better off not “found.”

Rating: 2.0/5.0

Adam Wingard is no novice when it comes to creating tense atmospheres in horror/thriller films. With films like “You’re Next” and “The Guest”, Wingard has already proven his mastery over several key aesthetics necessary to the horror genre. In “Blair Witch”, he repeats all of them while also adding some of the more cheapening effects to recreate the once novel experience that was “The Blair Witch Project” and gives it the Hollywood treatment.

“Blair Witch” is one...

Blair Witch (2016)
Review: 'Blair Witch' is a brute force reminder of what worked about the original film
Blair Witch (2016)
When I reviewed the original The Blair Witch Project, it was March of 1999. I saw it in Austin, in the apartment of a couple of my friends, thanks to Harry Knowles, who had been sent a VHS copy of the film by the filmmakers during its Sundance run. I went to Austin in February, and Harry had been sitting on his copy, waiting for us to get to town. We were there for the third Quentin Tarantino film festival at the still-young Alamo Drafthouse, and on the last night of the festival, my friends and I were set to hit the road as soon as the movies ended. We were road-tripping, and between the four of us, we figured we’d be able to do the entire drive back to La straight through with no stops for sleep. Harry asked us not to leave town right after the film, though.

The Weekend Warrior 9/16/16: Blair Witch, Bridget Jones’s Baby, Snowden, Hillsong: Let Hope Rise
Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

This Past Weekend:

Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. As expected, Relativity’s theatrical return with its own horror/thriller The Disappointments Room...

Blair Witch movie review: more like blah witch…
MaryAnn’s quick take…

An entirely superfluous attempt to recapture the magic of the original film. A remake masquerading as a sequel that goes nowhere and has nothing new to say. I’m “biast” (pro): liked the first film…

I’m “biast” (con): …but found footage is over

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Gather round, kiddies, and hear the tale of The Blair Witch Project. Oh, not the story in the film but the story of the film.

Way back in the 20th century — 1999, to be precise — a couple of indie filmmakers called Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez came up with the truly brilliant idea to make a movie on an ultra-low budget by giving cameras to three actors and setting them loose in the Maryland woods to improvise a “documentary” around an invented backstory about a search for the “true” story of a legendary local witch.

[Tiff Review] Blair Witch
It’s been more than 17 years since The Blair Witch Project arrived in theaters and changed the way Hollywood viewed horror, and filmmaking in general, for better or worse. Its low budget and hand-held camera style revolutionized the way studios would think — particularly after they saw their return on investment — in an effect felt all the way up to today. Equally ground-breaking in its successful and smartly marketed internet campaign, Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick’s feature was the sort of viral sensation simply not achievable in today’s saturated marketplace. After a quick sequel with none of the original’s imagination or creative freedom, 16 years later, enter director Adam Wingard’s Blair Witch. It’s a film that not only goes back to the basics, but seems to deliberately steal much of what made the original such a horrific treat.

The film tracks James Donahue (James Allen McCune), a...

Blair Witch Review [Tiff 2016]
If you’re asking why we need another found footage movie – let alone another sequel to The Blair Witch Project – then you don’t watch enough horror movies. The reality is simple. If it wasn’t now, then it’d happen sometime in the future. And if you’re complaining that Blair Witch doesn’t do anything “different,” well then you Certainly don’t watch enough found footage schlock, because if you sifted through the same handy-cam trash I do on a monthly – nay, Weekly – basis, you’d be thanking Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, not questioning their surprise horror sequel.

James Allen McCune stars as the brother to The Blair Witch Projects‘s Heather Donahue – also named James – who believes his long-lost sister is still alive after an ominous YouTube clip surfaces. He can’t go alone, so he enlists his best friend (Pete, played by Brandon Scott) and accompanying girlfriend (Ashley,...

The Legend Returns In New Promos For Adam Wingard’s Blair Witch Sequel
Almost three decades on from the moment audiences were invited to partake in The Blair Witch Project, director Adam Wingard is on the verge of releasing the long-rumored Blair Witch sequel into theaters – and a pair of promos have landed online to prove it.

Dressed up as The Woods for the longest time – a bait-and-switch reminiscent of Bad Robot’s handling of 10 Cloverfield Lane – Lionsgate officially revealed Wingard’s backwoods thriller to be a bona fide Blair Witch sequel late last month, pulling the rug out from under just about everyone.

Ordering the likes of James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Valorie Curry, Corbin Reid and Wes Robinson to Black Hills woods, the follow-up begins with the discovery of a long lost tape, one that appears to shed light on the mysterious disappearance of a wayward sibling. More than twenty years on from the original haunting, Blair Witch has...

Adam Wingard’s The Woods Has Been A Secret Blair Witch Sequel All Along, Watch Nerve-Shredding New Trailer
Consider the pitch: A group of college students uproot and plot course for their nearby woodland for a camping trip only to discover they are not alone. Toss in Pov camerawork and it’s all but certain that said project will draw comparisons to The Blair Witch Project, Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick’s micro-budget masterstroke that ushered in a new genre of horror back in ’99 – that is, unless said project has been in the works as a Blair Witch sequel all along.

Pulling that rug out from just about everyone was director Adam Wingard (The Guest, You’re Next) who, along with screenwriter Simon Barret, had been toiling away at an eerie new horror flick known as The Woods. Unlike, say, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Wingard’s bait-and-switch actually involved rolling out a full-blown trailer for The Woods, which really makes this reveal all the more satisfying.

It’s accompanied by a new trailer,...

The Woods Trailer Promises the Scariest Movie of the Year
Adam Wingard at an event for V/H/S (2012)
Every year there seems to be one horror film that can rise above the endless stream of low budget, middle of the road, run of the mill horror flicks that studios push out constantly and this year, Adam Wingard's The Woods looks to be that film, and the first teaser trailer for the film has dropped, and it is promising "a new beginning for horror films." A bold statement, sure. But the critical praise for the film that the first half of the trailer focuses on seems to back that up.

Though details of the film have largely been kept under wrap, the Lionsgate production is said to feature a group of college students who go out camping in the wilderness and discover that they aren't alone, which is what the trailer heavily teases. Wingard has already made a name for himself in the horror genre in recent years,...

First Trailer for New Horror Thriller 'The Woods' From Adam Wingard
"A nightmare of classic proportions." Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Adam Wingard & Simon Barrett's new horror thriller The Woods, with a quote from Brad Miska saying its one of the "scariest movies ever made". The film is about a group of college students on a camping trip that discover they are not alone. This is supposed to introduce a new creepy horror character, which you'll barely get a glimpse of in this footage if you look close. The cast includes James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Valorie Curry, Corbin Reid, and Wes Robinson. This could actually be pretty good, as these two filmmakers are fantastic and always deliver. I do want to see more from this, but I'm intrigued already. Here's the first official trailer for Adam Wingard & Simon Barrett's The Woods, direct from YouTube: The story involves a group of college students on a...

The Woods Beckon In Haunting First Trailer For Adam Wingard’s Horror
Set against a spine-chilling, almost melancholic rendition of “Every Breath You Take,” Lionsgate has premiered the haunting first trailer for The Woods, an all-new horror thriller hatched by the creative minds behind The Guest and You’re Next.

That’s Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett, who looked to have cooked up the camping trip from hell in today’s first teaser. Opening with serene establishing shots of the great outdoors, the tension gradually begins to build and build until we are introduced to a “group of college students on a camping trip who discover they are not alone.”

Hardly a horror premise to reinvent the wheel, of course, but the terrifying imagery that follows – not to mention those gruesome Pov shots – is enough to fuel nightmares right up until the movie’s September debut. Toss in some admittedly hyperbolic review quotes and there’s every chance The Woods could...

Enter ‘The Woods’ in First Teaser For New Horror Feature From ‘The Guest’ Director Adam Wingard
After delivering one of the most entertaining films of the last few years with the Dan Stevens-led thriller The Guest, writer Simon Barrett and director Adam Wingard are back with a fully-fledged horror feature. Not much was known about The Woods back when we named it one of our most-anticipated films of 2016, but now a bit more has been revealed thanks to the first teaser.

Set for a release on September 16th, the story follows a group of college students who realize they are not along during a camping trip. While the first teaser doesn’t give away any of the story, it does show off some of frightening imagery and uber-hyperbolic quotes. Check it out below along with the poster for the film starring James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Valorie Curry, Corbin Reid, and Wes Robinson.

The Woods opens on September 16th.
