A Tree Fell In The Woods (2025) ‘Tribeca’ Movie Review: Alexandra Daddario and Ashley Park Bring Some Spark to This Unfocused Couple-Vacation Drama
Image
At the movies, a getaway to a cabin in the woods always spells disaster. Nothing good comes of it. It’s either something grotesquely violent or a wrenchingly grim vision that exposes carefully constructed facades. In such a space, with isolation hovering intensely, it becomes impossible to rescue shards of hope and joy if there’s not authenticity in place. The remote cabin is primed as a unique space that unleashes long-caged demons and gives utterance to hidden scars. There can be no escape. Nora Kirkpatrick’s “A Tree Fell In The Woods” attunes itself to the complications and conundrums that may sprout in such a space.

She weaves a tale of couples, revealing tensions simmering underneath loyalty and mutual trust that had earlier seemed rock-solid, immutable. Gradually, the frays show when individuals are put in a situation and forced to reckon with its ugly but imperative consequences. Should they...

Tribeca Review: Josh Gad and Ashley Park Shine in Surrealist Dramedy A Tree Fell In The Woods
Image
Going into a title like “A Tree Fell in the Woods,” many potential plot ideas might come to mind. Are we in store for a new horror comedy flick, a la "The Cabin in the Woods?" Will we witness an inspiring tale about a hard-working lumberjack? Most likely, though, the title will serve as a reminder of that age-old question most of us have been asked at least once in our lives: “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” For better or for worse, this new movie, from writer-director Nora Kirkpatrick in her feature debut, doesn’t attempt to provide an answer to that. Yes, there are woods, and a tree does...

‘A Tree Fell in the Woods’ Review: A Scattered Bottle Drama Rescued by Fun Performances
Image
A chamber piece about long-term relationship woes, Nora Kirkpatrick’s feature debut “A Tree Fell in the Woods” rests on the considered performances of its four lead actors, who play entwined couples considering their futures. However, this single-location comedy-drama seldom draws its power from the space in which it’s set. The comforts of its isolated mountain cabin not only refuse to enhance the bubbling pressures, but in many ways deflate them. The result is a film of casual observations from afar, and scenes strung together almost vignette-style, rather than unfolding as a result of toppling domestic dominoes.

Set in a cozy rented cabin, the New Year’s Eve getaway re-unites a pair of college best friends: novelist and editor Debs (Alexandra Daddario) and financier Mitch (Josh Gad). They each bring along their respective spouses, who’ve only met in passing: Debs is not-so-happily married to nature photographer Josh (Daveed Diggs...

‘A Tree Fell in the Woods’ Review: Josh Gad and Alexandra Daddario in an Uneven, Occasionally Insightful Relationship Dramedy
Image
If pop culture is to be believed, nothing good has ever come from a couple dashing off to a cute little cabin in the woods. This year alone, the sly sci-fi Companion, Netflix’s drab dramedy The Four Seasons and the twisted Sundance rom-com Oh, Hi! have each taken turns considering the many, many different ways a weekend getaway might pressure-test a relationship, until fault lines become chasms big enough to swallow entire lives whole.

Adding to that collection now is Nora Kirkpatrick’s debut feature, A Tree Fell in the Woods, premiering at Tribeca. In the canon of vacation-set marriage exposés, it’s mid-tier, entertaining in parts but neither profound nor original enough to blaze any new trails. But in its epiphany that our most complicated relationships are the ones we have with ourselves, it delivers an intriguing if incomplete snapshot of Millennial anxiety.

The falling tree of the...

The Office's Cancelled Spin-Off Would Have Ruined The Show's Happy Ending
Image
Spin-offs aren't always a good idea. For every "Frasier" or "Young Sheldon," which originated from "Cheers" and "The Big Bang Theory" respectively, there's a "Joey," the follow-up to "Friends" that spectacularly crashed and burned. "The Office" didn't get a spin-off immediately after it ended in 2013, but it almost did — and one of the show's last episodes was a backdoor pilot for the spin-off that never was. It's a good thing it never came to fruition, frankly ... because it would have screwed up the happy ending between main characters Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) and Angela Martin (Angela Kinsey).

The 17th episode of the ninth and final season of "The Office," simply titled "The Farm," was intended as a backdoor pilot — a seemingly bygone practice where showrunners would center an episode around characters and scenarios that they hope will result in a spin-off later. In the episode as it aired, Dwight goes...

How ‘Daisy Jones & the Six’ Became a Rare TV Musical to Get the Sound Just Right
Image
We’ve all made the “Cop Rock” jokes. The Steven Bochco musical drama, which premiered in fall 1990, was a big swing: marrying original music with procedural storytelling. It was a colossal flop that we still talk about three decades later, and a reminder that musicals are hard.

Music has been a part of the TV landscape going back to the 1950s and shows like “Your Hit Parade.” But few series have successfully integrated regular music performances into their storytelling: “The Monkees” and “The Partridge Family” worked in the 1960s and ’70s. “Fame” did it in the early ’80s. And then “Cop Rock” scared people off the concept.

The 1990s animation boom incorporated music in shows like “The Simpsons” and “Animaniacs.” But not until the 21st century did scripted series really figure out how to make musical numbers work as part of the narrative. “Flight of the Conchords” did it with satiric tracks,...

The Office: The Farm Spin-Off Would Have Wrecked Dwight and Angela’s Ending
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for The Office seasons 1-9.

“Geese and goats and Schrutes and hijinks at the Bed and Breakfast” is how Rainn Wilson, the actor behind The Office‘s Dwight K. Schrute, summed up proposed spin-off The Farm, which never went beyond its pilot episode. Speaking to fans on a Reddit Ama back in 2012, Wilson called the Dwight-focussed show a terrific, weird yet accessible rural family comedy. Had it been ordered to series, it would have told the story of the Dunder Mifflin paper salesman running a 1,600 acre farm and B&b with his brother and sister.

“It would have been a really big hit,” The Farm writer-director Paul Lieberstein told ‘The Office Deep Dive with Brian Baumgartner’ podcast in 2021. Lieberstein was co-showrunner on The Office for seasons five to eight, and played Hr manager Toby Flenderson on the comedy. He told podcast presenter Brian Baumgartner how disappointed he...

Pair of Filmmakers Take Virtual Reality Storytelling to New Places
Steven Soderbergh at an event for Les divins secrets (2002)
As demonstrated by the passion of thousands of geeks, filmmakers and executives who crowded the Vrla expo in downtown Los Angles on May 4-5, virtual reality may well be emerging as the next hot storytelling technology.

To be sure, Vr’s road is still a bumpy one. Some filmmakers, including Steven Soderbergh, have expressed doubts about the tech being useful for longer narratives. By contrast, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences symbolically gave its seal of approval to the format by awarding “Carne y Arena,” created by director Alejandro González Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, a special Oscar at the Governors Awards in November.

Among helmers taking virtual reality a step further are Angel Manuel Soto and Nora Kirkpatrick.

Soto, a Puerto Rican director who’s work-ed mainly on shorts and documentaries, helmed Vr short “Dinner Party,” an immersive experience based on the avowed alien abduction in 1961 of Betty and Barney Hill,...

Watch the Trailer for Hulu’s Upcoming Vr Comedy ‘Door No. 1’ (Exclusive)
Hulu publicly unveiled the trailer and a behind-the-scenes video for its new virtual reality (Vr) comedy “Door No. 1” Friday. The comedy, which was written and directed by Nora Kirkpatrick of “The Office” fame and produced by AOL’s Ryot exclusively for Hulu, is set to debut on the service on May 24.

Door No. 1 is a kind of live-action multiple choice comedy adventure about a ten-year high school reunion. The show puts the viewer into the middle of the action by making her or him a protagonist of the show: Alex, one of the former students attending the reunion.

Alex doesn’t talk throughout the show, but can decide to take multiple paths through the story, and make many bad decisions along the way — it’s a high school reunion, after all.

The cast for Door No. 1 included Steve Little (“Eastbound and Down”), Ravi Patel, Kyle Bornheimer (“Casual”), Missi Pyle...

Watch: Michael Mohan's Short Film 'Pink Grapefruit' on Relationships
"I'm excited to be forced to get to know you." From filmmaker Michael Mohan comes a charming short film about romance and relationships titled Pink Grapefruit, starring Wendy McColm who goes on a blind date that doesn't go as planned at first. The cast includes Nora Kirkpatrick and Matt Peters, plus Nathan Stewart-Jarrett. It's an interesting twist on the typical idea of a romance or even a blind date, and it works well as a refreshing short film that makes you think about relationships and how everything is supposed to work can be different. Watch out - it is Nsfw so wait until you're home. But it's a great short. A young married couple brings two of their single friends out to Palm Springs for a long weekend. It does not go as planned. The short premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at SXSW.

Watch: Nathan Stewart-Jarrett & Wendy McColm Star in Award-Winning Short Film 'Pink Grapefruit'
Straight outta my email inbox...  A short film titled "Pink Grapefruit" by from director Michael Mohan which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of this year, and went on to win a jury award at South by Southwest in March. The story: A couple (played by Matt Peters and Nora Kirkpatrick) arrange a blind date of sorts in Palm Springs for mutual friends (Wendy McColm and Nathan Stewart Jarrett)... and, well, things happen. Director Mohan and co-screenwriter Chris Levitus' intent here was to freshen up a simple, familiar premise with a slightly disorienting end-product. Did they succeed? Sundance and SXSW certainly think so.  You...

TV Land cancels 'Jennifer Falls' after first season
Jaime Pressly in Jennifer Falls (2014)
Jennifer Falls will not return for a second season, EW has confirmed. TV Land canceled the half-hour, single-camera comedy, starring Jaime Pressly, after its 10-episode season. The show followed Jennifer, a woman who, along with her daughter, moved back in with her mother after losing her job. Matthew Carlson (The Wonder Years) created the series, which also starred Jessica Walter, Missi Pyle, Ethan Suplee, Nora Kirkpatrick, and Dylan Gelula. Michael Hanel and Mindy Schultheis executive produced the show. The network announced it has picked up two more single-camera comedies: Impastor, starring Michael Rosenbaum, and Teachers, which Alison Brie is executive producing.

Jennifer Falls TV Review
TV Land‘s gimmick of creating new sit-coms that are throwbacks to the style and general effort of those classic shows from the ’80s and ’90s is one that is proving more and more a hit-or-miss venture. What at first seemed a no-fail stroke of genius, has now put out its share of failures, and though it has led to some truly great shows, we’re learning that you can’t always spin success out of the concept.

For every Hot in Cleveland, there’s a Retired at 35. For every The Exes, we get a Happily Divorced. Not that those shows were terrible. They weren’t. They just didn’t work out, and were perhaps not as solid in their construction as the real hits. Now we have Kirstie, which I admit seemed like a good idea on paper, and that one is mostly difficult to watch. This leads us to Jennifer Falls,...

TV On Tap: John Oliver Breaks the FCC Comments Page, “Cougar Town” Vet Boards Syfy’s “Ascension” and How “Milkshake” Made It Into the Spelling Bee
News

Buzzfeed declares that Faking It is “changing the nature of queer representation” as it avoids assigning a sexuality to its two lead characters , even as the sexual tension builds between them.

Cougar Town alum Brian Van Holt has joined the cast of Syfy’s upcoming mini-series Ascension, according to EW. He’ll play the ship’s captain, who I’m sure is also the ship’s Penny Can champion.

Brian Van Holt

How did an inappropriate reference to Kelis‘ “Milkshake” make it into the Scripps Spelling Bee? The event hires comedy writers to keep things lively by writing jokes and pop culture references for the clues. Multiple possibilities are written and, while the “Milkshake” reference was rejected, it ended in the announcers’ cards by mistake.

I need to start stocking up on rage in case this Walking Dead spoiler turns out to be true. I’m positive I can...

“White Collar” Returns with More Matt Bomer and “Mythbusters” Takes on Zombies
News

The past few years has seen rejected pilots get second chances. In 2007, CBS rejected Babylon Fields, an ahead-of-its-time zombie drama about a town where people rise from the dead and return to their old homes. Now, NBC is giving the series another try according to Deadline. I expect it will have to work to avoid seeming like a copycat of shows that came afterward like In the Flesh and Les Revenants.

It’s official. Ronan Farrow will host a show on MSNBC starting in 2014. Farrow says he wants to create a show that works as “a guide on how people can have agency in the story”. In the meantime, expect to see more of Farrow on MSNBC.

Ronan Farrow

Last night, South Park missed an air date for ths first time in 240 episodes due to a power outage the previous night that made it impossible to get those last-minute touches done.
