Dune: Prophecy's Biggest Burning Questions That Need to Be Answered in Season 2
Image
The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy, now streaming on Max. This article also contains a brief mention of suicide.

Dune: Prophecy Season 1 ended with a grueling battle for power in the cosmos inspired by Frank and Brian Herbert's novels. The Sisterhood has been fractured, while the Imperium lost casualties of its own. It's a stark reminder of how nasty politics can get.

The Season 1 finale sets the stage for an intriguing sophomore season. Many fans are eager to see how the various Houses will stabilize, especially House Corrino, which has been left in complete disarray. Still, despite wrapping up many of its major storylines, Dune: Prophecy left many plot threads hanging that will need to be addressed in the second season.

6 Lingering Storylines Dune: Prophecy Season 2 Needs to Resolve Immediately
Image
Dune: Prophecy unfolds approximately 10,000 years before Paul Atreides’ rise to power. The series centers on the Harkonnen sisters, Valya and Tula, as they ascend to the leadership of the relatively new Bene Gesserit order, with Valya becoming the Mother Superior. Although these characters are created for the show, showrunner Alison Schapker skillfully bridges the ancient past with events familiar from the Dune novels and films.

The complex world of Dune presents challenges for any adaptation, and Dune: Prophecy tackles its time period with notable ambition. While diverging from the books in certain areas, the series incorporates gripping elements to captivate viewers. Its production quality is exceptional, and the morally complex characters evoke comparisons to Game of Thrones. The season finale wraps up some storylines, yet boldly leaves others unfinished, compelling fans to anticipate what Season 2 will bring. This list features the most burning (pun intended) questions.

Nb: The following contains relatively minor spoilers for Dune: Prophecy episode 6. All the same, we’d advise you watch the finale first before reading the paragraphs below.

Together, dear readers, we’ve made it. Through the jarring edits, the meaningful looks, the scheming and the space weasels. Everything we’ve experienced in Dune: Prophecy so far has built to this – the grand finale. The moment where truths are revealed and scores are settled. Well, sort of.

In the land of television, final episodes are often supposed to leave us with something to chew over and questions to ask ourselves. But not quite like this. Dune: Prophecy Season 1 Episode 6, 'The High-Handed Enemy' Review
Image
The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 6, "The High-Handed Enemy," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 22 on HBO.

To say Dune: Prophecy has been a wild ride is an understatement. Set 10,000 years before the events of Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies starring Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, the series primarily followed Emily Watson's Valya Harkonnen and her sister Tula (played by Olivia Williams) as they led the Bene Gesserit into performing a coup. Among the other storylines explored in Dune: Prophecy Season 1 included the ruling House Corrino gradually collapsing, the Sisterhood staging a rebellion, and Desmond Hart looking to destroy the Sisterhood for unknown reasons.

In the penultimate episode, "In Blood, Truth," major bombs were dropped. Chief among them was the revelation that Desmond Hart was actually Tula Harkonnen's biological son with Orry Atreides. Desmond similarly revealed he was aware of his mother being a member of the Sisterhood,...

Dune: Prophecy Episode 6 Review - An Action-Packed Yet Frustrating Finale Offers A Promising Glimpse Into A Superior Season 2
Image
Warning: This review contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy's season finale

After Tula discovers Desmond Hart is her son, Dune: Prophecy delivers another mixed bag of an episode. Across its first five, the prequel has varied in quality. Billed as a Bene Gesserit origin story, the series has been light on the in-fighting within the Sisterhood, focusing instead on an anti-Imperium rebellion, authoritarianism under the reign of Emperor Javico Corrino, and a strange and troubling prophecy that has something to do with the Machine War that took place before the events of the series.

Set in the universe of Frank Herbert's Dune series, this sci-fi epic follows the political and spiritual struggles on the desert planet of Arrakis. As factions vie for control of the prized spice melange, a prophesied hero emerges, challenging the balance of power and the fate of the galaxy.

The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Episode 5, now streaming on Max.

Dune: Prophecy has so far done a good job of setting up the world of the Dune movies, using elements of the expanded book series to its own effect. This has mostly been the case with the Bene Gesserit, the likes of whom are fleshed out more than in the films. Unfortunately, some of the show's developments leave something to be desired, especially when it comes to adapting the more unexplored elements of the source material.

Veteran TV actor Barbara Marten is the standout in another uneven Dune: Prophecy chapter. Our review of episode 5:

Nb: In line with Film Stories policy, the following review is certified spoiler-free for Dune: Prophecy episode 4, but does contain spoilers for earlier instalments.

In a series so far heavy on serious faces and whispered rumours of doom, one of its unexpected delights is actor Barbara Marten. A veteran of such British TV shows as Brookside, Casualty and The Bill, she’s quietly bustled and swished through Dune: Prophecy as the captivatingly severe Sister Avila.

A voice of reason among the increasingly fractious sisterhood, Avila’s one of those characters who doesn’t drive the plot, but instead becomes a welcome presence who you’re always pleased to see whenever they show up.

'It Was Very Important': Denis Villeneuve Explains the Significance of Dune: Part Two's Final Shot
Image
The following contains spoilers for Dune: Part Two, now streaming on Max.

Dune: Part Two was always meant to be a tragedy, a sentiment Denis Villeneuve channeled into how its ending deviated from the original novel.

In a conversation with GamesRadar, the director talked about the significance behind Dune: Part Two's final shot where Chani, rather than join Paul Atreides and the Fremen's holy war, chooses instead to return to Arakkis' desert. After agreeing that the scene was one of his favorite shots to film, Villeneuve discussed the significance of Zendaya's character not staying by Paul's side like Chani's book counterpart, believing it reflects author Frank Herbert's sentiment that Paul was never a hero in Dune's story. As he explained, Herbert "was disappointed by the way some people perceived the first book, thinking that it was a celebration of Paul Atreides. Herbert himself wanted to correct this perception,...

How Theodosia Turned Into Griffin In Dune: Prophecy Episode 4 & What It Means For Valya
Image
Includes Spoilers for Dune: Prophecy episode 4.

Sister Theodosia shapeshifts into Griffin Harkonnen at the end of Dune: Prophecy episode 4, and context from the books can help explain how. Jade Anouka stars as Theodosia in Dune: Prophecy's cast, a promising young member of the Sisterhood with a mysterious past. Though she hadn't demonstrated why in the first few episodes of HBO's prequel series, Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) see her as a special asset to their organization, and the ability to shapeshift demonstrates why.

In Dune: Prophecy episode 4's ending, Valya has just allowed her uncle, Evgeny Harkonnen, to die on the floor in front of her. She reacts by turning to a portrait of her dead brother, Griffin, speaking to it. Moments later, she's standing face to face with him, but the series quickly reveals that it's actually Theodosia, having transformed her appearance to look like Griffin.

The fourth episode of Dune: Prophecy, "Twice Born," just aired, and it contained some whopper twists. Lila is alive! Somehow, at the end of the episode, Theodosia walks out a room looking like the spitting image of Valya's brother Griffin, who had died decades before. It's implied that this ability is why Valya brought Theodosia to Salusa Secundus in the first place, and now they're both ready to make use of it.

Dune: Prophecy Episode 4 Ending Explained - Is Lila Alive?

Dune: Prophecy episode 4's ending leaves audiences with a ton of new material to unpack, creating even more questions and offering very few answers. The HBO prequel series is set 10,000 years before Denis Villenueve's movies on the Dune timeline, examining an earlier stage of the Sisterhood, House Harkonnen, and other notable factions. The TV show is inspired by the classic Dune books as well as the expanded novels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. ‘Dune: Prophecy’ Episode 2 Review: A Sister Sacrificed, a Mother Challenged, and a New Prophecy

“Dune: Prophecy” is picking up the pace in Episode 2 — and gradually revealing more about the show’s villain (and antihero).

After expositional duty and climactic finale to Episode 1, “Two Wolves” is distinctly more focused, written by Kor Adana and directed by John Cameron. All the key characters on Wallach IX and Salusa Secundus are wrapped up in the aftermath of Pruwet (Charlie Hodson-Prior) and Kasha’s (Jihae) sudden, horrific deaths — and already using others’ grief to manipulate them and steal power.

Valya heads to Salusa Secundus to speak directly with Emperor Javicco (Mark Strong), bringing Sister Theodosia (Jade Anouka) with her to maintain the Sisterhood’s influence on Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina). Ynez’s fighting instructor and lover, Keiran Atreides, uses the collective shock as a distraction to steal the palace blueprints, because every good space adventure needs stolen blueprints. He gives his own expository soliloquy to Mikaela (Shalom Brune-Franklin...

After top-heavy start, the series premiere of Dune: Prophecy gets on a nice moody roll
Image
The first time I watched the series premiere of Dune: Prophecy, I was afraid I wasn't going to like the show. "The Hidden Hand" kicks off with a 15-minute lore dump, catching viewers up on decades of pre-history. We learn about the Machine Wars, which mankind barely won against the thinking machines that enslaved us; we banned all thinking machines afterwards. We learn about how orders like the Bene Gesserit sprung up to replace thinking machines; the Bene Gesserit sisters have trained to become human lie detectors, making themselves invaluable to the great houses of the Imperium. We learn about Raquella Berto-Anirul (Cathy Tyson), the first leader of the Bene Gesserit, who passed her skills onto the young Valya Hakonnen. We see scenes from a nasty power struggle that follows Raquella's death, and only then do we jump forward to catch up with Valya as an older, more experienced sister who's now running the order,...

Dune: Prophecy Episode 1 Spoiler Review and Recap — Do the Origins of the Bene Gesserit Make Captivating Television?
Image
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films have become so popular that they have created a massive multimedia franchise. The first Dune television project since the SyFy Channel miniseries in the early 2000s, HBO’s Dune: Prophecy is an adaptation of the book Sisterhood of Dune written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Imagine what you would think an HBO Dune series would look like, and that is basically exactly what you get with Dune: Prophecy.

If you have not seen episode 1 of Dune: Prophecy, stop reading here because this article contains Massive spoilers.

Dune: Prophecy Episode 1 Recap

Like Villeneuve’s Dune films, Dune: Prophecy begins with a quote that summarizes the show’s central theme: “Victory is celebrated in the light, but it is won in the darkness.”

The show’s narrator, Valya Harkonnen, then explains the context of the universe. Led by the House Atreides, the humans rose up against the “thinking machines,...

Dune: Prophecy's Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed Ahead of HBO Debut
Image
Ahead of its debut this Sunday, HBOs newest sci-fi fantasy series Dune: Prophecy has officially received its first batch of reviews from critics. This comes after eight months since director Denis Villeneuves Dune: Part Two had made its theatrical debut, which garnered a worldwide gross of over $700 million at the box office.

Per review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Dune: Prophecy has scored a Tomatometer rating of 74%, based on 38 reviews. Compared to Villeneuves Dune movies, which both earned Certified Fresh ratings, the spinoff is currently the lowest-rated installment of the franchise at the moment. As Ron Hilliard of Discussing Film said, "The show boasts a strong, well-rounded ensemble cast, a compelling narrative, and gorgeous set designs reminiscent of Denis Villeneuve's two movies. However, some other lacking comparisons to the films are just too hard to shake off."

Dune: Prophecy — HBO’s prequel series set a full 10,000 years before the Timothée Chalamet/Rebecca Ferguson movie franchise — spans just six episodes in its first season, and a dense six episodes they are.

Premiering this Sunday at 9/8c, the sci-fantasy series opens with a meaty prologue that lays the foundation for the conflict that drives it, but from there it’s full steam ahead, introducing characters and dynamics and agendas that shift like the sands of Arrakis.

Dune: Prophecy Cast Weighs In on Game of Thrones Comparisons
Image
Several comparisons have been made between Dune: Prophecy and Game of Thrones. While both series are based on books, Olivia Williams and Emily Watson, who play Tula Harkonnen and Valya Harkonnen in the new HBO show, say their story is fundamentally different.

"I think a difference in this is that the main protagonists in this are women," Watson told ComicBook. "There's lots of other people, but you know, in the sense that it is centered around this sisterhood, I think that makes it unique and interesting, and I'm not in any way holding these women up as kind of feminist icons because they are not. It's very much a question of don't do this at home, but great for us to have that range to play with." Watson shared the sentiment, saying, "The women in this series are not the adjuncts to the men and that is what sets us apart from Game of Thrones.

Dune: Prophecy TV Review: The prequel series dives into the mythology of the sci-fi franchise
Image
Plot: From the expansive universe of Dune, created by acclaimed author Frank Herbert, and 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, Dune: Prophecy follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.

Review: Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune has proven that once considered unadaptable, Frank Herbert’s novels could make for critical and commercial successes in the right creative hands. With the first film nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards and Dune: Part Two destined for the same honor, the franchise’s future has never been more in the zeitgeist. Seizing the opportunity to explore other formats and media, Warner Bros and HBO have developed Dune: Prophecy. This prequel series explains the origins of the mystical sect seen in the films known as the Bene Gesserit. Chronicling the familiar Houses of Harkonnen,...

We talk to the cast and crew of Dune: Prophecy about HBO's terrific new sci-fi series
Image
This upcoming Sunday, HBO will air the first episode of Dune: Prophecy, a new TV series set in Frank Herbert's Dune universe. But don't expect to see Paul Atreides anywhere; this show is set 10,000 years before the events of the first Dune book, adapted recently by director Denis Villeneuve for the big screen. Dune: Prophecy takes place in the shadow of the Machine Wars, where humanity fought against violent thinking machines and just barely won. Now, various schools are cropping up to teach human beings to do things that computers used to do. One of those schools is the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, where women are trained to be human lie detectors. Sisters are then placed in the halls of power alongside the leaders of the great houses. Are they serving truth, or are they subtly massaging events in the Sisterhoods' favor?

The show digs deep into that question, and...

‘Dune: Prophecy’ Review: HBO’s Somber ‘House of the Dragon’-Style Prequel Could Use a Bit More Spice
Image
When it premieres on HBO Sunday, Nov. 17, Dune: Prophecy will take the place of The Penguin on the schedule. It’ll also continue the premium cable giant’s recent run of odd corporate integration, in which it takes blockbuster Warner Bros. film franchises and retrofits them as new television versions of popular HBO series.

Just as the creative team behind The Penguin looked at the opportunity to do a standalone show focused on Colin Farrell’s waddling crime lord and delivered The Sopranos with more latex, the developers of Dune: Prophecy apparently looked at the opportunity to do a prequel tied to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and delivered House of the Dragon with (a very few) sandworms in place of (an awful lot of) dragons.

I’m not saying that when HBO’s Harry Potter series finally emerges from its endless gestation, it will be a stealth reboot of Arli...

Dune: Prophecy EP Explains Why Denis Villeneuve Wasn't Involved in Prequel Series
Image
Denis Villeneuve's involvement in Dune: Prophecy, or lack thereof, has been revealed. Executive producer Jordan Goldberg recently shared that the acclaimed filmmaker was very hands-off on the prequel series due to his commitment to the film side of the Dune franchise.

When Dune: Prophecy was first announced back in 2019, Villeneuve was set to direct and produce the series pilot, in addition to serving as an executive producer. However, as the project evolved, Villeneuve's role in the series became unclear, especially as the production of Prophecy overlapped with that of Dune: Part Two. While speaking with Screen Rant at the 2024 New York Comic-Con, Goldberg clarified Villeneuve's role in the show, stating, "Well, Denis' got his own franchise that he's working on right now and he's been busy doing that and his own projects. He's really left to us to figure out how to platform the new characters and the new worlds,...

Dune: Prophecy Showrunner Teases the Harkonnen Family Origins
Image
Dune: Prophecy showrunner Alison Schapker shared what fans can expect from the Harkonnen Family in the upcoming HBO prequel series. In Denis Villeneuves Dune films, the Harkonnen Family was introduced as the main antagonists to Paul Atreides story.

During a recent interview with EW, Schapker confirmed that Dune: Prophecy will not only explore the Harkonnens origins, but will also show how they were able to become one of the most formidable houses within the empire, even after falling from grace. "We get to see how it all started. When we meet Valya Harkonnen, she is a girl whose family has experienced a tremendous fall from power and has lost its noble status," Schapker said. "She dreams of restoring what she feels is rightfully theirs. How she goes from being someone obsessed with rebuilding her noble house to being someone who is dedicated to the Sisterhood above all is a big part of the story.

The Original Dune Movie Changes Streaming Home Next Month
Image
The original feature-length adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune is leaving Netflix at the end of the month. However, Dune fans need not worry as the 1984 sci-fi movie will be available to stream on a different service the following day.

Beginning Oct. 1, Dune will be available to stream on Max. Written and directed by David Lynch, the 1984 epic space opera film chronicles the conflict between rival noble families as they battle for control of the extremely harsh desert planet Arrakis, the only place where spice can be found. The movie follows Paul Atreides, played by Kyle MacLachlan, and his family, House Atreides, as they are appointed to control Arrakis, bringing them into conflict with its former overlords, House Harkonnen. Although a box office bomb at the time of release, Dune has since become a cult classic.
