Severance May Have Quietly Spoiled the Fate of Its Best Characters (& It Went Right Over Fans' Heads)
Image
Apple TV+’s Severance is a show deeply entrenched in symbolism, with a narrative laced with religious, historical, and literary allusions that suggest hidden meanings behind the show's every frame. Among these, Greek mythology allusions play a significant role time and again, subtly foreshadowing the fates and underscoring the tragedies of its central characters. Given the show’s emphasis on duality -- the split between Innie and Outie, the blurred line between reality and illusion -- its use of mythological archetypes may not just be thematic but blatantly prophetic.

The myths invoked in Severance paint a picture of doom, entrapment, and tragic attempts at escape. Gemma’s connection to the Persephone myth hints at a cyclical fate tied to forces beyond her control. Mark’s journey, in part, mirrors that of Theseus, navigating the labyrinthine halls of Lumon in search of truth. And perhaps most devastating of all, there are...

‘You Burn Me’ Review: Matías Piñeiro’s Intimate, Impressionistic Cesare Pavese Adaptation
Image
Argentine writer-director Matías Piñeiro’s You Burn Me is an intimate, impressionistic adaptation of the “Sea Foam” section from Italian modernist poet Cesare Pavese’s Dialogues with Leucò. It’s one of several segments from Pavese’s 1947 book that stages a philosophical dialogue between figures of Greek mythology.

“Sea Form” specifically imagines a conversation between Sappho (Gabriela Saidón), the lyric poet of Lesbos, and the mountain nymph Britomartis (María Villar). They have much to discuss, both having thrown themselves into the sea—the former out of unrequited desire for the ferryman Phaon, the latter to escape the unwanted attentions of Minos. Splicing in a handful of Sappho’s surviving fragmentary poems and a parallel story that follows a lovestruck biology student (Maria Inês Conçalves), Piñeiro expands Pavese’s dialogue into an intertextual conversation on the nature of love and desire, death and memory, silence and expression.

Poetry, not a fundamentally narrative medium,...

How Escape Room 2's Ending Twist Creates A Big Franchise Problem
Image
Escape Room 2: Tournament of Champions ends with a fairly clever twist, but unfortunately, said twist presents a major franchise problem going forward. The first Escape Room became a sleeper hit in 2019, overcoming mediocre reviews by critics to become a hit with audiences, earning $155 million on a $9 million budget. After several Covid-19-related delays, Escape Room 2 finally hit theaters, and while the sequel might not have been the financial powerhouse the first movie was, its makers clearly intend to bring the world an Escape Room 3 based on the Escape Room 2 ending.

After another movie full of Zoey (Taylor Russell) and Ben (Logan Miller) staying alive despite trap after trap constructed by the Minos company, the Escape Room 2 ending twist reveals that everything in the sequel up to that point had been done to convince Zoey that Minos had been caught, and get her and Ben into the...

What Kaos Gets Right About Greek Mythology
Image
Quick Links Zeus of Greek Myth Did Impregnate a Lot of People Getting to the Afterlife Was as Challenging as Kaos Makes It Look Prometheus Is Key to the Mythological Prophecy About Zeus' Downfall, Too

Netflix's Kaos is a retelling of Greek myth in the modern world. Created by Charlie Covell, Kaos stars Jeff Goldblum as a paranoid and self-obsessed Zeus facing the possibility of his dominance from Mount Olympus coming to an end. Kaos, described by Goldblum as "a magic carpet to disaster," shares the screen with the likes of Janet McTeer as Hera, Cliff Curtis as Poseidon, and Nabhaan Rizwan as Dionysus deities in league with Prometheus (Stephen Dillane) to bring him down.

Covell developed Kaos out of his fascination with man's constant return to Greek mythology. Covell draws heavily on the ancient tales but does so with a higher level of accessibility for contemporary audiences. As a result,...

Kaos' Furies Explained: Who They Are In Greek Mythology
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Kaos.

The Furies have a small but significant role in Netflix's Kaos, raising questions about their Greek mythology origin story and how it compares to their appearance. The dark comedy follows three humans Ariadne (Ari), Eurydice (Riddy), and Caeneus who have the power to take down Zeus, the god of thunder and leader of the Greek gods. In addition to these four characters, the Netflix show weaves in a number of gods, goddesses, and figures from Greek mythology, getting a shocking amount right in Kaos.

While some gods like Hera and Dionysus play a central role in the story, others have a much less prominent role. Medusa is only featured in a handful of scenes, but she helps run the Underworld. Daedalus is a captive of King Minos, helping him run his estate. Even Achilles gets a nod through an Easter egg at the grocery store.

Kaos Finale Recap: Was Prometheus Able to Overthrow Zeus’ Reign?
Image
“The line appears, the order wanes, the family falls, and kaos reigns.” But did Kaos reign in the season finale of Netflix’s Jeff Goldblum-led mythology? Let’s break it all down.

Minos is dead and his prophecy came true, which quite literally is giving Zeus blood-filled nightmares. He decides it’s not a dream, but a vision, so he visits the Fates. Lachy says they’ve been expecting him. They know he wants to destroy them. Zeus accuses them of lying to Poseidon, but they say if he decides the prophecy doesn’t exist, then it doesn’t exist.

Netflix’s ‘Kaos’ Cast And Character Guide
Image
Let me make this very clear at first: I am no expert in Greek mythology. We’re talking about Kaos here, which is the Netflix-ication of Greek mythology, and it works wonderfully. I’m sure Charlie Covell had a very exciting pitch for Netflix about the show (having a hit series in the form of The End of the F***ing World certainly helped them), and half the battle was won with the casting of Jeff Goldblum as Zeus. We’re going to look into Zeus and the other characters in this article and draw a comparison between the show’s version and Greek mythology. I’ve done quite a bit of research for this one, in case you’re wondering.

The Gods Zeus

Greek mythology says Zeus is the highest-ranked god amongst all, which automatically makes him the king. He’s the protector of both gods and humankind. He...

Zeus' Prophecy In Kaos & How It's Connected To The 3 Human Prophecies
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Netflix's Kaos.

While the gods arent supposed to be controlled by the Fates, Zeus receives a daunting prophecy in Netflixs Kaos season 1 that dictates his behavior and connects him to three humans throughout the series. The dark comedy is a contemporary retelling of Greek mythology, exploring themes of power and family. Questions about free will also come into play with the prophecies that the Fates give out.

While prophecies are supposed to be restricted only to humans, one shocking non-human character has a prophecy within Kaos Zeus. As Prometheus explains, Zeus started as a mortal man, only gaining god status after absorbing enough souls. He now maintains his powers and immortality by drinking Meander water in Kaos. Given his human background, Zeus has a prophecy just like the society he oversees, which becomes central to the plot of Kaos season 1.

Netflix’s Kaos: Is Minos Dead? Will Ari Destroy The Gods With Trojans?
Image
As per the text scribbled in Greek mythology, Minos is the king of Crete. He’s also the son of Zeus (and Europa). In Netflix’s latest mythological comedy (it’s much more than that though), Kaos, he’s basically a yesman to the gods. Sure, he has the title of President of Crete, but all he does is follow orders from Poseidon, aka the god of the sea, who is in fact doing the bidding of the god almighty, Zeus. Jeff Goldblum, possibly the coolest human alive at the moment, plays Zeus, which adds more value to the fascinating Netflix series. Anyway, in this article, we’re going to look into President Minos and his fate.

What Did Minos Do?

In Kaos, prophecies are a huge deal for everyone. They’re given to humans and the gods by fate. Minos’ fate said his ending starts in a marital bed,...

Kaos: The Fates’ Prophecy, Explained: Will Prometheus Kill Zeus And The Other Gods?
Image
As someone who doesn’t know much about Greek mythology, I wasn’t struggling with the trouble of whether it sticks to the script or swivels into a different lane, because it’s all quite new to me. But those who are knowledgeable in the subject might find the direction the show takes a little bit unruly. Like, for example, Hera, the goddess of marriage and family, cheats on Zeus, basically saying never mind that, I’ll be my own goddess. It’s definitely going to raise some eyebrows, but to that, I’d say, leave what you know behind and start fresh; get a “renewal,” you know? Anyway, Kaos isn’t really a show about the Greek gods themselves as much as it is about the concept of power and the terrifying truth about how the rich exploit those beneath them. It’s a simple story really, told time...

‘Kaos’ Season 2 Theories: Is Riddy A Prophet? Whom Did Hera Call?
Image
By the sound of it, Netflix’s new modern adaptation of Greek mythology is all-encompassing, especially if you’re a stranger to the well-chiseled and ethereal gods of the Greek pantheon. But if you’re not new to this world of gods, then you’ll know that the lot we’re seeing in Kaos is only a handful of them. Already, it feels like a lot to me, but it’s still worth your time. With that said, though, what we’ve seen thus far is only the tip of the proverbial snow-capped mountain (Mount Olympus?), while the massive land mass beneath the snowline is yet to be discovered. But this doesn’t mean nothing happens in the first season. In fact, it’s an exciting piece of media that is well-paced and gives us exactly enough information to crave for more. There are certain characters that you want to root for,...

Kaos Ending Explained
Image
Netflixs new dark comedy Kaos is a contemporary retelling of Greek mythology, packed with twists and turns that send important messages about shifting power. The show first introduces viewers to the narrator Prometheus the god of the gods Zeus his wife Hera and his son Dionysus. After establishing the world of Greek gods and their powers, Kaos introduces characters with less power but are just as important Riddy, Caeneus, and Ari. These three humans have the same prophecy as Zeus, which isnt supposed to be possible.

Within the first episode, Riddy dies and goes to the underworld. However, she becomes trapped in the Underworld alongside Caeneus. Meanwhile, the gods try to manipulate Ari and her father, Minos, on Earth. Ari lives with debilitating guilt because she killed her twin at birth. All three of these humans start to learn that the things they know to be true arent as they seem.

‘Kaos’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Did Zeus Bleed? Is Riddy Alive?
Image
Netflix comedy Kaos occasionally feels like it’s stepped out of the same universe as “Sandman.” No, I know it’s much more colorful and, well, “chaotic,” but maybe it’s the act of bringing gods to life with English accents and eccentric fashion that makes me think that way. But with that said, I think the show is a well-executed comedy that at the heart of it is about our basic human “feelings;” love, power, jealousy, hatred, you know the works. The show delivers two simple messages: worship isn’t going to get you anywhere, and power doesn’t last forever. But it’s action-packed and a lighthearted retelling, or should I say, a fictional retelling of Greek mythology that expands the story that we are already familiar with. In the world of Kaos, prophecies are what people live and die for, so we’ve got to keep that...

Kaos Cast & Character Guide
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Netflix's Kaos

The incredible ensemble cast of Netflix's Kaos gives memorable and hilarious performances, bringing to life Ancient Greek myths with a contemporary twist. The dark comedy Kaos follows Riddy (Eurydice), Ceaneus, and Ari (Ariadne) who are fated to bring down the Greek Gods, led by Jeff Goldblum's Zeus. The series has a sharp script, utilizes exciting cinematography, and incorporates a strong soundtrack all of which help make the series so strong.

However, none of these aspects would have mattered if it weren't for the great performances by the cast. Kaos brings together a large ensemble cast of predominantly well-established actors who masterfully characterize the Greek gods, goddesses, and heroes. However, some actors with smaller portfolios rise to the occasion of representing well-known figures from mythology in Kaos.

Jeff Goldblum plays Zeus: King of the Gods, ruler of the world. He’s cruel, stylish and all-powerful. That is until he’s not.

From BAFTA-winning screenwriter and showrunner Charlie Covell, the Kaos series is a bold, darkly comic, contemporary take on Greek mythology: exploring love, power, and life in the underworld.

Having long enjoyed his status as king of the gods, Zeus’s reign has never been truly threatened. That is until he wakes up one morning and discovers a wrinkle on his forehead.

Believing it to be the harbinger of an ancient prophecy that foretells his destruction, Zeus experiences neurosis and becomes convinced his fall is coming. As his paranoia takes hold, the god of gods—seeing signs everywhere—starts to dangerously self-destruct.

Every ambition isn’t good, and all that glitters isn’t gold. Light has always symbolized power and what can be done when the right people or the wrong people get it. He sees himself as God, an adjudicator in a world where law and justice have failed many. With the Death Note’s power, he becomes the judge himself and the rest does not seem to matter thereafter.
