Cobra Kai Star's Horror Movie Becomes Streaming Hit After Unnoticed Release in 2024
Image
A 2024 horror film starring Cobra Kai's Peyton List has found recent success on Hulu after its low-key debut earlier this year and rejection by most critics. The Inheritance currently has a 38% Rotten Tomato score.

Netflix announced in January 2023 that it would no longer distribute the horror movie as initially intended, opening the door for Vertical to acquire distribution rights for The Inheritance. Following a limited theatrical run, the film arrived without fanfare on video-on-demand (VOD) on July 12, 2024. The Inheritance, however, made a triumphant return to streaming, having been in and around Hulu's top 10 recently. The film peaked at no. 3 within the platform's top 15 movies earlier this week and has since managed to maintain its place in the top 15. The uptick in the interest the film is garnering from audiences on Hulu is not easily explained, given its 30% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is even worse than its critic score.

Where You've Seen The Resident Alien Cast Before
Image
A sleeper science fiction comedy hit since its debut in 2021, "Resident Alien" has steadily been entertaining audiences with its extraterrestrial hijinks. The show adapts the comic book of the same name by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, starring Alan Tudyk as an alien hiding in the small town of Patience, Colorado. Posing as the town's doctor Harry Vanderspeigle, the alien initially intends to wipe out humanity as part of his otherworldly directive, but then he learns to appreciate it. This change of heart is informed by the friends that Harry makes in town, with "Resident Alien" boasting a strong ensemble of actors joining Tudyk.

A lot of the charm in "Resident Alien" comes from its principal cast, along with the solid writing by series creator Chris Sheridan. As the series progresses, much of these characters' backstories are gradually revealed, giving heart to the wacky sci-fi antics Harry unleashes on the town.

The Familiar Class Critique of ‘The Inheritance’ [Review]
Image
There’s a mystery at the heart of The Inheritance, the new thriller from director Alejandro Brugués. Or at least that what the screenplay by Joe Russo & Chris Lamont seems to believe.

When the film opens, the estranged adult children of billionaire Charles Abernathy (Bob Gunton) have assembled at the isolated family estate for the first time in two years. There’s severe, business-minded twins Madeline (Rachel Nichols) and C.J. (David Walton) who manage day-to-day operations for the family business, as well as influencer Kami (Peyton List), who hocks her fashion line to followers on social media.

It’s clear that the audience’s sympathies are meant to lie with youngest son Drew (Austin Stowell) and his wife Hannah (Briana Middleton). Not only do they work in philanthropy, but as the sole person of color, Hannah is immediately coded as the outsider, even before Madeline, C.J. and Charles...

Critter’s Attack Takes A Bite Out Of Sdcc
The little furry creatures that made a bloody splash in the 80s have crash-landed again and they’re hungry. The cast and crew of Critters Attack! made a special appearance at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and they had a lot to say. Here are a few highlights. Steve Blum who voiced the Critter’s had this to say about working on the film. He did all the voices for the Critter’s in about 8 hours in a studio in Burbank, California. Each Critter has its own personality. He really put over the puppeteers and the people behind the scenes. Keith Arbuthnot was one of the puppeteers and was super cool to talk to about the film. Keith’s favorite scene in the movie revolves around want to be YouTube personality who meets an untimely end in horrific Critters fashion. They had 20 some Critter puppets on-site during filming. Both...

How Practical Puppeteering Aided in Pivotal ‘Twilight Zone’ Reveal
Jordan Peele
In this installment of Jordan Peele’s reimagined anthology, a mysterious visitor (Steven Yeun) crashes a Christmas party at a small Alaskan town’s police station. His presence is resented when he seemingly reveals the secrets of everyone in the room. But the traveler carries a secret of his own: He’s part of an alien species bent on taking over Earth. In the final moments of the episode, piercing lights fill the night sky, signifying the impending invasion. The visually expansive moment is immediately contrasted by an intimate, close-up shot in the jail cell as the traveler, now in his true form, caps off his successful journey with a bite of pie.

Makeup FX supervisor

“We see the hand of the alien, which is played by Sandy DaCosta, and which is separate of Keith Arbuthnot, who played the head. We took a mold of Keith and then...

Child’s Play Remake Will Reimagine The Design Of Chucky
The planned Child’s Play reboot remains a controversial matter among longtime viewers of the series, not least because of the film’s drastic reworking of Chucky’s origins, replacing the killer’s voodoo backstory with that of a murderous A.I. But while this new take on the franchise’s devilish mascot has yet to earn the favor of the fans, a recent press release from MastersFX can at least provide some context on the freckled face of Lars Klevberg’s upcoming flick.

MastersFX is the studio responsible for building and animating the new Chucky, and from the sound of things, it was a pretty elaborate procedure:

“MastersFX has brought the new Chucky doll to life on screen like never before in a mixture of practical on-set puppet work and digital FX enhancements. Todd Masters, founder of MastersFX, and his team took six weeks to prepare and assemble seven practical animatronic puppets,...
