Set in 1980s Spain, actor Paz Vega’s subtly affecting directing debut shows a family suffering under an abusive father, but is warmed by optimism and compassion
Spanish actor Paz Vega makes her directing debut with this sensitive portrait of domestic abuse and patriarchy in 1980s Spain. It’s told through the eyes of seven-year-old Rita (Sofía Allepuz), whose mum, Mari (played by Vega) is trapped in a violent marriage. We see the world how Rita sees it: filled with of moments of joy and discovery; her sense of wonder adds tenderness and hope to the story. It’s never voyeuristic (the violence happens almost entirely off screen), but Rita is effective at evoking how each member of the family is brutalised by abuse, living in a constant state of hypervigilance.
Rita works hard. Her little seven-year-old hands scrub, carry heavy plates and wash dishes to make her mother’s life a little easier.

Wolf King’s ending was about saving Drew Ferran from being executed by King Leopold during Lucas and Gretchen’s marriage ceremony. Back in the day, the Werelords of Lyssia pledged allegiance to the noble Wolves, with their leaders being King Wergar and Queen Amelie. They had a son named Drew. But when Leopold and the Lions stormed Westland’s capital, Highcliff, killed Wergar, and put Amelie under a spell, Drew was sent away to live as a part of the Ferran family. When Drew came of age, Lord Vanmorten killed Tilly and pinned the blame on Drew, causing him to go on the run. Eventually, he was captured by Count Vega and delivered to Highcliff. Leopold knew that if the people of the kingdom learned that the true heir to the throne was still alive, then they’d turn against their current king and put the crown on Drew.

While Fox unceremoniously axed 9-1-1: Lone Star, many fans felt the finale was strangely abrupt. Everyone had a cheerful ending, but that doesn’t mean the show’s done for good. Obviously, there’s still the franchise starter, 9-1-1, but the Texas spin-off still seems to have some wind beneath its sails.
But it wouldn’t make much sense to linger in Austin, Texas. For better or worse, it seems that the 126’s story has reached its end. However, its former captain still has plenty of potential. It can even be said that the show’s writers are perfectly positioned for another 9-1-1 spin-off.
Why Did 9-1-1: Lone Star End? Image via FOX9-1-1: Lone Star’s dramatic rescues were often inspired by real-life emergencies. Despite being set in Austin, Texas, most of Lone Star was filmed in Los Angeles, California. Series...

One thing fans inevitably do in debate whether a show would be better if a particular character from a spinoff was still around, or if said character suddenly made a transition to the flagship show. Well, 9-1-1 showrunner Tim Minear recently talked about the possibility of one character's return during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

In the 2nd episode of Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue, we got a peek into the lives of the survivors of the plane crash, followed by a death that caused them to suspect each other. Kevin used to practice medicine, but when he almost killed one of his patients by accident, he lost everything in his personal and professional lives. That forced him to go into business buying medical equipment from Guatemala at dirt-cheap prices and selling it in the USA for a profit. The revelations about how Dan and Amy “fell in love” with each other sounded dubious, and it seemed like Dan was with Amy just for her money. Apart from being a luchador, Carlos was good with electronics, and he planned to use the plane’s Elt to signal for help. Travis and Lisa not only ran a chain of motels, but Lisa had also worked at a hospice,...

MGM+’s Nine Bodies in A Mexican Morgue is a run-of-the-mill survival thriller centered around nine survivors who end up in the middle of nowhere. Eight passengers had boarded a flight at the Aurora International Airport in Guatemala headed to Houston, Texas, but before they could reach their destination, the pilot, Octavio Fuentes, lost his bearings due to a faulty Gps system. He tried to contact the authorities and sent numerous requests for immediate help, but no one responded. In the end, the plane ran out of fuel, and Octavio had to make an emergency landing in the Mexican tropical forest.

Vivacious Dominican merengue phenom Milly Quezada receives just accolades in the spirited biopic “Milly, the Queen of Merengue,” an electric musical set to hit the London Screenings Market later this month.
Forced to flee during the Dominican Republic’s turbulent civil war, Quezada’s family immigrated to Manhattan’s bustling Latin district, Washington Heights, just as the diaspora’s thirst for homespun music intensified.
The hope-tinged devotional spans the singer’s journey, from adolescence and nascent career with Milly, Jocelyn and Los Vecinos, through her debilitating struggle with depression that led to a rousing comeback as a solo artist, earning her several Latin Grammy’s and cementing the rightful, royal title she defends to this day.

Spanglish, a rom-com from 2004, is the latest to join the lineup, arriving on Netflix on Feb. 1.

The second season of Netflix’s The Night Agent brings Peter and Rose back onto the playing field, once again getting them embroiled in a game of secrets, cover-ups, shifting alliances, and conspiracies—one that can, and does, change the fate of the nation at the end. While a number of familiar faces from the first season are missing, as the story ventures in a new direction, the impact of the events of the first season is strongly felt in the newest chapter of the spy thriller series. Also, series fans will be pleased to learn that characterization has remained on point in the second season as well, especially as seen with the introduction of new characters. The narrative is more gripping this time around compared to the first season, and while at times the converging storyline of political conspiracies and a terrorism plot might seem a bit muddled, the...

For decades, biographical films have been widely popular. Unlike other genres, biopics don’t always have a hard time standing the test of time. Tastes change, perspectives change, and the world changes, but a person’s story remains the same. The genre’s roots can be traced back to the Silent Era, where movies like Joan the Woman and The Life of Émile Zola were produced to educate the public about specific historical figures. These films normally presented their subjects in a sanitized, heroic light, allowing audiences to draw moral inspiration from them or aim to be more patriotic. With time, the approach changed.
By the ‘50s, the genre had evolved past mere glorification. Biopics started covering more controversial and morally flawed characters, allowing audiences to either get a clearer picture of key historical figures or an exaggerated yet entertaining perspective. Stories about world leaders are fun too, and 2024 gave...

Wicked Season opens on a sombre note with a man we’ll come to learn is Sergeant Mike “Manhunter” Hughes, played by E.K. Spila dressed for a funeral and speaking to an unseen person, or perhaps their tombstone. A siren sounds in the distance, and he walks away as the film jumps back eighty-four hours
It’s October 30th, marking the tenth anniversary of Alton Crow’s horrific killing spree. Now, someone is recreating his gruesome crimes, leaving a path of crucified and disembowelled women in their wake. With no leads or suspects, Captain Turner assigns Detectives Miller and Vega to talk to Hughes, the man who captured Crow.

Welcome to this review of this past Monday’s episode of WWE Raw, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s show!
Match #1: The Final Testament & The Miz def. The Wyatt Sicks The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
The Miz and The Final Testament had their work cut out for them as they collided with The Wyatt Sicks in an Eight-Man Tag Team Match. Scarlett got involved but was thwarted by Nikki Cross, who took out the valet with a Lou Thesz press. Uncle Howdy hit the Sister Abigail on Karrion Kross, but Miz was able to save the day. Just as Howdy was about to take out The Miz, Paul Ellering made his return, throwing powder into the eyes of Howdy. Kross then struck with the Final Prayer to win the match.
My Score: 3 out of 5 Match #2: Liv Morgan def.

The actor’s name is Slawomir Sobala and he plays “the most despised person in the world.” He knows he likely won’t receive any awards for his performance despite its power and timeliness and the personal risks in its physical production.
His movie, titled Putin, opens January 10 on screens in 64 countries, including about 200 in the U.S. The chilling biopic about the Russian despot’s climb to power carries the subtitle “Absolute power is not enough.”
Foreign policy experts speculate that a Vladimir Putin-Donald Trump summit could coincidentally take place within weeks of the movie’s opening. Patryck Vega, its Polish director, is far from optimistic about the results of such a summit given the overreaching egos and appetites of the two leaders. And the nuclear threats already exchanged.

Throughout Hart Hanson's Fox procedural "Bones," the main cast of characters who work at the Jeffersonian Institute get attacked by vicious killers and murders a lot. No, really, it happens a lot, to the point where it's one of the bigger things on "Bones" that doesn't make sense — but I digress. Aside from the Gormogon, the Puppeteer, the Deity, and Mark Kovac, who are some of the most grotesque villains seen on the series, there's one particularly frightening villain who shows up as early as season 2 of "Bones" — specifically, the Gravedigger, who buries victims alive for generous ransoms (and may or may not even set them free if the money is delivered). Also, a lot of her victims are children, which is particularly messed up.
So, who's behind the horrific crimes committed by the person known only as the Gravedigger until season 4, when the predator slips up and accidentally...

Movies about siblings and their clashes, all related to their pasts, as well as their insecurities and their differentiating relationships with their parents, work in touching the heartstrings primarily because the drama is pulling from recognizable emotions. The tricky balance of ensuring that events play out for the conflict to occur and resolve while also keeping naturalistic tonalities at play is what separates soap operas from impactful drama. It also becomes an acting showcase for all the leads in the films as well.
Ben Snyder’s “Allswell in New York” suffers from a tonal as well as a focus problem. Following, some highlights and trends at this year’s festival, which runs Nov. 15-23.
Paz Vega: A Director is Born
Paz Vega will accept at Huelva a Premio Luz at this year’s opening ceremony. It comes at an opportune time. Major plaudits to not only the central performance of the eponymous Rita, a loveable seven year-old moppet growing up in 1984 working class Seville, but Vega’s helming. “Rita’ is shot with an exquisite taste for light,...

Paz Vega-starrer “Death Has No Master,” a Venezuela-set thriller from director Jorge Thielen Armand, is participating in Tiffcom’s Tokyo Gap-Financing Market, as the producers seek to secure the final 30% of the film’s $1.2 million budget.
The film, which previously participated in the Venice Production Bridge’s Gap-Financing Market, stars Vega as a woman who returns to Venezuela after two decades to sell her family’s cacao plantation, has recently shifted its shooting location to Colombia. The story follows her character Carolina’s confrontation with former workers who have occupied the land, leading to a dangerous power struggle that forces her to face both past trauma from a kidnapping and her own violent impulses.
The project marks Armand’s third feature following the acclaimed “La Soledad” and “La Fortaleza.” “My films are vehicles to investigate a broken identity – that of Venezuelans today – pieces of a puzzle I hope become...

The following contains major spoilers from NCIS Season 22, Episode 2, "Foreign Bodies," which debuted Monday, Oct. 21 on CBS.
NCIS Season 22, Episode 2, "Foreign Bodies," feels like an episode designed to move a character forward, rather than to stand on its own. In this case, the character is NCIS Director Leon Vance, played by Rocky Carroll. Though Carroll turns in yet another reliable performance in the Vance-heavy hour, he can't stop it from feeling clumsy, especially once the Director's personal life becomes the focus of the story.
"Foreign Bodies" centers around important diplomatic talks between the United States Navy and the Venezuelan Navy. Those talks are put in jeopardy when someone from the Venezuelan side ends up dead -- in Vance's office. What unfolds starts out as a high-stakes thriller, but then gradually becomes more and more about the relationship between Vance and his "casual girlfriend" Lena Paulsen. Vance and Lena get some development,...

NCIS Season 22 Episode 2 throws us straight into a diplomatic meeting with Venezuela that quickly spirals into chaos.
Vance’s covert operation with Diego Rojas, a Venezuelan agent playing both sides, takes a disastrous turn when Rojas collapses and dies in his office.

From that moment on, it’s a mad scramble to cover up the body and solve the mystery before the entire situation blows up in their faces.
Naturally, Torres, McGee, Jess, and even Jimmy — who seems to have joined in just to avoid being the odd man out — get swept into Vance’s off-the-books operation.
Watching them frantically try to handle a dead body without drawing any attention is exactly the kind of...

From the opening scenes, it’s clear Carlos has developed an unhealthy reliance on his smartphone. As the manager at a logistics firm, his days are lost in an endless cycle of emails, video calls, and virtual meetings. While his career has excelled, Carlos’s relationship with his wife Adela has suffered tremendously over the years.
We meet Adela, a passionate doctor, understandably fed up with playing second fiddle in her own home. Despite Carlos’s sincere efforts to change, old habits die hard. His compulsion climaxes during an important family event, leading Adela to issue an ultimatum—seek help, or their marriage is over.
Desperate to save his family, Carlos joins a therapy group for those addicted to their devices. Here we see both the humor and heartache of addiction as members try to replace bad behaviors with healthier activities. As Carlos works to reconcile the many areas of his life out of balance,...
