Biography

    • Former professional Colombian soccer goalkeeper born in Medellín, Antioquia. Married with Magnolia Echeverry, he is father of four. In the 80s and 90s, his particular style made him an important figure in Colombia. At professional level he began playing for Millonarios in 1985. Next, he was hired by Atlético Nacional that won the 1990 Copa Libertadores and the Interamerican Cup. In 1991, he moved to Spain with Valladolid, but in the middle of the season he left the team. He returned to Atletico Nacional to win the Colombian championship in 1994. After many years with this team, he went on to play for Club Tiburones Rojos of Veracruz, Mexico, and then returned to Colombia to Junior de Barranquilla. His farewell as a Colombian professional player was on January 24, 2010, in Medellín. In 2011, Higuita joined the Al-Nassr team as goalkeeping coach and then as team coach. René Higuita is remembered worldwide as one of the most daring goalkeepers ever; he refused to stay in his area, coming out of it with the ball heading to the opposite goal, threatening and dodging rivals. Due to his eccentricities on the field, he was nicknamed "El Loco." One of his most famous and world-renowned moves the "Scorpion", he performed on September 6, 1995, during a friendly against the English national Team at Wembley.
