Trio Servando Diaz
Ever popular Cuban vocal and instrumental ensemble founded in 1937 at Radio Progreso in Havana.

Original members were singer Servando Díaz, born in 1912 in Guira de Macurijes, province of Matanzas, who became its lead vocalist and played second guitar; Otilio Portal, born in Camajuaní, province of Las Villas, first guitar and backup vocals, and Octavio "Cuso" Mendoza, born in Santa Clara, also in the Las Villas province, who played maracas and sang backup as well.

After proving their appeal on radio audiences, the trio recorded hit after hit for the RCA Victor label becoming featured performers in theaters, cabarets and finally television. Díaz and his partners also traveled frequently to New York, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and other Latin American countries where they were received as true musical idols. The trio never lost its popularity in spite of several personnel changes during the 1940's and 1950's.

With the arrival of the Cuban revolution in 1959 and the confiscation by the communist regime of all show business venues, (and everything else for that matter) the trio disbanded and Servando Díaz went into exile in Puerto Rico where he launched a solo career. He recorded two albums and never stopped performing until his passing in 1985.
