- Four daughters, with husband Rahmat Gul: Robina (circa 1989), Zahida (circa 1999), Alia (circa 2001), and an unnamed child who died in infancy.
- As a 12-year-old Afghan refugee girl, her hooded head and striking eyes graced the iconic June 1985 cover of National Geographic magazine as captured by photographer Steve McCurry on Kodachrome 64 film with a Nikon FM2 camera. Though her identity was unknown at the time, McCurry did manage to rediscover her and a reunion was organized in 2002.
