James Norton dismisses Bond speculation
James Norton has dismissed speculation suggesting he's being lined up as the next James Bond. The 'Bob Marley: One Love' star has been named as the favourite to take over the role of 007 from Daniel Craig by bookmakers Ladbrokes - with his odds of playing the superstar slashed from 10/1 to 5/2 - but James is adamant he's baffled by the gossip.Speaking to TV presenter Alex Zane at the BAFTA film awards in London on Sunday night (16.02.25), James said: "Whoever is deciding on these odds needs to get a new job. It’s so weird and bemusing ... "Yet again it's based on pure speculation. It makes for a good clickbait moment in the media but other than that, it's fun and bemusing I guess."He was also asked about a theory which surfaced on a podcast which suggested there had been a major clue about his acting future in...

Funko Pop Debuts 'The Real Ghostbusters' Collectible Figures
Image
Ghostbusters nostalgia seemingly has no end. In addition to the recent live-action legacy sequels Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, there's been a surge of nostalgia for The Real Ghostbusters. The classic '80s animated series – which would've been called Ghostbusters if not for a totally unrelated animated series that tried to capitalize on brand recognition – is back in toy form, with a new line of Funko Pop collectibles.

Funko Pop vinyl figures based on The Real Ghostbusters animated series are available for pre-order right now. Funko released the first in-package shots of Peter, Ray, Egon, Winston, and their ghostly companion, Slimer. The 3.75" cult TV characters come complete in their jumpsuits with Proton Packs in-hand as well as attachable color-coordinated proton streams. Venkman is even accompanied by a little 1.5" Slimer. As a detour from the typical purplish-blue cardboard, the packaging features slime, retro caution striping, and the Real Ghostbusters logo.

Gil Kenan, the director of Frozen Empire, dropped some news about the Ghostbusters Netflix cartoon. It’s called “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” and picks up after the 2021 flick “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” mixing in both new and old Ghostbusters characters. These recent movies are like building on the universe set up in the ’80s originals, just like how “The Real Ghostbusters” cartoon did from ’86 to ’91, and its follow-up “Extreme Ghostbusters” in ’97.

Kenan was chatting on “A Trip to the Movies with Alex Zane” about this new Ghostbusters cartoon for Netflix. He said that he had just checked out this big art presentation for the show and that they were full steam ahead with making scripts and artwork. While he remained somewhat cryptic regarding specific details, he expressed that the current era presents an exhilarating opportunity for...

“Captain America shouldn’t be a blonde white guy”: Weirdest Marvel Pitch Wanted Dwayne Johnson or Will Smith as the First Avenger
Image
Starting with the 2011 film, Chris Evans has embodied the iconic Marvel superhero Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has since reprised his role in multiple films. While the actor was initially skeptical about taking on the role, he has garnered immense praise worldwide for his performance in the MCU.

However, before the Knives Out star joined the superhero franchise as The First Avenger, the studio received a pitch to cast actors like Dwayne Johnson or Will Smith to take on the role of Steve Rogers.

Jeff Wadlow’s Pitched A Captain America Film After the Success of Iron Man

Screenwriter and filmmaker Jeff Wadlow shared during an interview that he was highly impressed by the 2008 Rober Downey Jr. starrer Iron Man. The huge success led to the filmmaker’s attempt to pitch a vision for a film following the MCU’s super soldier,...

Oscars 2024 review | A slick, polished ceremony showed Hollywood can still put on a good show
Image
As a celebration of a cracking year of cinema, the Academy scarcely put a foot wrong in a safe but spectacular Oscars 2024 ceremony. Our review:

Watching the Oscars live for the last few years hasn’t been without its risks. Grappling with pandemic fallout, declining viewing figures and some bizarre format experiments, the biggest night in showbiz has, for some time now, often failed to live up to its reputation.

The unmitigated disaster of the 2022 ceremony, though, seems to have given the Academy a kick up the backside. With last year successfully reducing the number of televised slaps back to the more conventional zero, the 96th awards ceremony seemingly built on the happily uneventful proof of concept to deliver a slick, confident broadcast that finally made a town full of storytellers look like they knew what they were doing.

Jimmy Kimmel returned to host for the fourth time in his...

Jeff Wadlow reveals scrapped plans for X-Force movie with Deadpool as the villain
Image
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is now opening its doors and its arms to welcome Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine. Before Disney purchased 20th Century Fox, Fox’s Marvel playground was the X-Men franchise. They could give a team member spin-offs, like Wolverine’s solo series, or explore a different facet of mutant-kind with a film like The New Mutants. Before the Deadpool movies with Ryan Reynolds took off, there was actually another version of his story that was planned involving the X-Force team getting their own movie.

According to ScreenRant, Jeff Wadlow, director of Kick-Ass 2, recently appeared on A Trip to the Movies with Alex Zane. He revealed his scrapped plans for an X-Force movie that would have had Ryan Reynolds redeem the interpretation of Wade Wilson from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This project was one of many canceled explorations into the X-Men universe, such as Channing Tatum‘s solo Gambit movie.

Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool Would've Played the Villain in Cancelled X-Force Film
Image
Director Jeff Wadlow planned a gritty X-Force film with Deadpool as the antagonist, using a 'public school' mutant dynamic. The scrapped project featured a Red Dawn scenario in West Texas with a villainous Deadpool in pursuit of the X-Force team. Despite Ryan Reynolds' enthusiasm for the script, the X-Force movie was shelved after Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

An intriguing project that never saw the light of day was a standalone X-Force movie, to be helmed by director Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2). This film would have taken a daring approach by casting Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool not as the wisecracking hero but as the antagonist.

Wadlow's concept for the X-Force film was to present a grittier side of the mutant experience, contrasting with the more privileged upbringing of the X-Men. "If X-Men is about mutants that get to go to private school, what about the mutants that get to go to public school?...

Scrapped X-Force Film Would've Made Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool the Villain
Image
Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow has opened up about his scrapped X-Force movie, which would have featured Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool in an antagonistic role.

During an interview on A Trip to the Movies with Alex Zane (via ComicBookMovie.com), Wadlow divulged new details about his scrapped X-Force movie, which would have been a standalone spinoff of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. "I was lucky enough to write an X-Force script for Fox before the original Deadpool film was made," the filmmaker shared. "[Deadpool had] been in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and, as a comic book fan, I knew that was a travesty. That was a total abomination. I wanted to get it right," he added, explaining that his pitch was, "'If X-Men is about mutants that get to go to private school, what about the mutants that get to go to public school?'"

Canceled Deadpool Team-Up Movie Details Reveal A Gritty 90s-Inspired X-Force Trilogy

Jeff Wadlow planned an X-Force movie with Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool as an antagonist before it was scrapped. The movie was inspired by the original X-Men run, featuring Cable as a dark mentor to young mutants. Wadlow wanted Reynolds to play a supporting role as Deadpool, who ultimately turns at the end of the film.

Jeff Wadlow reveals what his Marvel plans were for the X-Force movie with Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool before it got scrapped.

In a new interview with A Trip to the Movies with Alex Zane Wadlow opened up on the premise for the X-Force movie, including what characters would have been featured in it. Wadlow also confirmed that the plan was to have Reynolds' Deadpool in an antagonist role, sharing the following:

BAFTAs: The red carpet and backstage are two different worlds
Image
The BAFTAs red carpet is well underway here in London, the UK, and the rain, this year, has thankfully stayed away. Taking place at the Royal Festival Hall on Waterloo’s Southbank, film fans have gathered at the erected fences surrounding red carpets, with excited teens clamoring for sights of Zendaya and Margot Robbie.

A few yards on the other side of the fence, movie stars sashayed their way into interviews, with the radiant Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for “The Holdovers,” speaking to red carpet host Alex Zane. Randolph, who is at her first ever BAFTAs, said: “Everything is so lovely and excited. There’s a buzz. It’s wonderful, it’s so great to be here.”

She continued: “It’s a different experience when it’s not just your category. It’s special. We can enjoy the whole process together. We had amazing chemistry,...

Industry Insider Disagrees With Christopher Nolan’s Stance Against Franchise and IP-Driven Films, Says the Audience is Only Getting Dumber
Image
Christopher Nolan is undoubtedly one of the greatest filmmakers in Hollywood right now. Even Martin Scorsese admits that Nolan can bring the cinematic revolution that the film industry is in dire need of. Although Nolan has not made a lot of movies, he has directed some of the most groundbreaking movies ever made. This implies that the director believes in quality over quantity.

Martin Scorsese has been in the industry for far longer than Christopher Nolan, and both of these directors agree on one thing. They both agree that franchise-led movies do not define global cinema. There was a fair amount of backlash on this opinion of theirs, and now an industry insider has also expressed his disagreement with the Tenet director’s viewpoint.

‘Oppenheimer’: Christopher Nolan Thinks His Film’s Success Could Usher In A “Post Franchise, Post Intellectual Property Landscape For Movies”
Image
With 13 nominations apiece for the Oscars and the BAFTAs, “Oppenheimer” looks to be the awards season favorite. But director Christopher Nolan thinks his latest film may end up being more than that. In fact, Deadline reports that Nolan thinks “Oppenheimer” may usher in a sea change in cinematic culture that changes Hollywood for the better.

Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
Christopher Nolan offers a positive vision of Hollywood’s future, arguing that Oppenheimer opens the way for a “post-franchise, post-intellectual property landscape for movies.”

Christopher Nolan’s reliably great value in interviews, in his own polished-shoes-and-cufflinks sort of way. Just look at his headline-grabbing comments about physical media and ‘evil’ streaming services, for example.

In his latest round with the media, the director has provided an upbeat take on where Hollywood is heading, and argues that the popularity of Oppenheimer suggests we’re heading towards a “post-franchise, post-intellectual property landscape for movies.”

Nolan made the comments on presenter Alex Zane’s podcast, Countdown To The BAFTAs, news of which comes to us via Deadline.

With Nolan’s three-hour biopic having made almost $1bn in cinemas, Nolan argues that studios have now been reminded that “there’s an appetite for something people haven’t seen or an approach to things people haven’t seen before.

Christopher Nolan Says ‘Oppenheimer’ Success Marks New “Post Franchise, Post Intellectual Property” Era For Cinema
Image
The box office success of Oppenheimer signals a new era of global cinema that is less defined by franchises and stories shaped by intellectual property, according to the film’s director, Christopher Nolan.

Nolan, fresh off a leading 13 nominations at BAFTA, passed through the awards body’s new awards season podcast Countdown to the BAFTAs, where he shared his thesis on what Oppenheimer can tell us about the future of cinema. He was joined by his wife and producer Emma Thomas.

‘Ghosted’ Filmmaker Dexter Fletcher Highlights The Difference Between Directing For Streamers Compared To Theaters
Image
British filmmaker Dexter Fletcher is fresh off the release of his Apple TV+ crime caper Ghosted, and during a recent interview, Fletcher highlighted what he described as the “comprises” required when developing a project for a streamer.

“You can’t make a film for streaming the same way you do for theatrical,” Fletcher told Alex Zane’s A Trip to the Movies podcast. “There are different metrics and approaches. There has to be, for the very reason that people can turn off very quickly.”

The Rocketman filmmaker continued to say that he had initially planned a long and elaborate opening sequence for Ghosted that involved Ana De Armas driving a car through a mountain in reference to a scene from the 1978 film Foul Play, starring Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase. Fletcher said he took the scene to Apple, who said they understood what he was attempting to create but raised...

Horror comedy is very difficult to get right. Managing to cause laughs and scares is always a tricky balance, especially over the length of a feature film. The Evil Dead 2 is often held up as the best example of the genre, but I would probably update this to Tucker and Dale vs. Evil which managed to be sweet, funny and feature some very memorable and violent scenes. Cannibals and Carpet Fitters is, much like Snakes on a Plane, a title that makes me smile. It earns an awful lot of good will through title alone. Bryan Fuller and Michael Green’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods novel will be arriving on our screens next week. Amazon Prime, the UK hosts of the Starz-produced show, held a swanky launch event to kick off the series.

In attendance were Ricky Whittle (who plays the central role of Shadow Moon), Ian McShane (the mysterious Mr Wednesday, who will embark on a hefty adventure with Shadow in the weeks ahead), Emily Browning (Shadow’s wife, Laura), Yetide Badaki (Goddess of Love, Bilquis) and Bruce Langley (Technical Boy, one of the ‘New Gods’ that Bilquis and her ilk aren’t too fond of). Alex Zane asked them all some questions,...

Spectre: 10 Awesome Things We Learned About Bond 24
As the hype train has been kicking into gear for many of 2015’s big releases, things have been oddly quiet for one the largest upcoming movies. Other movies have been showing special effects laden trailers to get audiences hyped years ahead of time, yet there’s been nothing but scant rumours about Bond 24, the latest entry in the 007 series and follow-on to the incredible Skyfall.

All that changed this morning, when the world got its first official information on Spectre. The title of the new movie, as well as its central cast and location schedule, were revealed at a special, live-streamed event at Pinewood studios. Bookended by moments of Alex Zane reading facts off Wikipedia for some reason, the announcement was a brilliant way for everyone to learn the exciting news at the same time, rather than having news outlets scrambling to be the first to report on it.

Remembering Popworld: Miquita Oliver looks back at the classic TV show
"Occasionally, when I've had too much wine and I'm with Simon, I'll say, 'Let's look at Popworld'."

There are two types of pop music show. Ones that came before Popworld, and ones that came after Popworld.

Simon Amstell and Miquita Oliver's early '00s pop chat and magazine show made it worth getting up in the morning for millions of teenagers and university students between 2001 and 2006 (let's ignore the Alex Zane years).

Previously, popstars had been used to inane phone-ins and cheery hysteria on Saturday morning kids TV. Simon and Miquita went for a different tact - taking the piss.

We caught up with Miquita to look back at the show's glory years.

How many times a week do you get people asking about Popworld?

Weekly? I'd probably say 60 times a day. But I love it, I'm fine with it. It's one of the best things I've ever done.

Empire Done in 60 Seconds 2014 Short Film Competition – Report
This weekend The Brewery was host to the sixth annual Jameson Empire Done in 60 Seconds awards, which sees budding filmmakers from across the world submit a 1 minute remake of their favourite film. 800+ entries had been whittled down to 24 for Saturday’s global final with entries spanning Indies, blockbusters and Oscar winners. It’s a competition that gets better with each passing year, and the quality of the shorts was once again very high.

No stranger to short films himself, Ben Wheatley was a fitting choice to chair the panel of judges which included his fellow filmmaker Jon S. Baird in addition to returning adjudicators Edith Bowman, Alex Zane and Empire Magazine editor Mark Dinning.

Speaking to us before the ceremony began in earnest, Wheatley told us why he jumped at the chance to be the judger of judges; “I’ve been asked to go on panels for all sorts of stuff.

Alex Zane makes New Year's resolutions afterwards
Alex Zane likes to achieve 10 things and then pretend they were his New year's resolutions. The 34-year-old TV presenter prefers to make ''post-resolutions'' because then he feels a sense of accomplishment after completing them, and he makes it seem more believable by laminating his list of achievements and displaying them in his flat. He exclusively told Bang Showbiz: ''What I do is I achieve 10 things and then write them down as a resolution. I make post-resolutions. I wait until I've done stuff and then go, 'That was a resolution.' ''I won't lie, I've not met many people who think it's a...

Alex Zane wants a new dustpan and brush for Christmas. The 34-year-old TV presenter admits he is not fussy when it comes to his desired Christmas gifts and would much rather receive practical presents than fancy items he isn't ever going to put to good use. He exclusively told Bang Showbiz: ''I did create a Christmas list, weirdly, but it's not an exciting one at all. I asked for a new dustpan and brush, pretty much that's it really. I'm the easiest person to buy for. A dustpan and brush.'' Despite his unexciting Christmas list, Alex admits any new dustpan and...

Win a Monsters University Jacket
Last week HeyUGuys was embroiled in what can only be described of the clash of the titans of movie websites and publications.

Organised by Disney, we attended the Monsters University Pixar Challenge to mark the release of Monsters University which hits cinemas this Friday. Up against the likes of Sky Movies, Empire Magazine, Total Film, Film 4 and many more, we took on the challenge by answering some of the geekiest questions to ever come out of Emeryville California (that is where Pixar is based in case you were wondering!).

Hosted by Alex Zane, we took a team of 6 of our finest writers including Joe Cunningham (his name has to come first because he knew most the answers), Ben Mortimer, Jon Lyus, Kenji Lloyd, Stefan Pape and David Sztypuljak. Each team had a Pixar themed name and ours (invented by the clever Jon Lyus) was Ratzenburger and Chips!

Anyway, the biggest...
