Shot by Jaime Pacena II, who drew from his decade-long journey as a visual artist in Tohoku, Japan, witnessing the resilience of Rikuzentakata, a city profoundly altered by the 2011 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, “This Place” was one of the big winners in this year’s Cinemalaya, netting awards for Best Direction, Cinematography, Production Design and Actress for Gabby Padilla.
Ella, a 28-year-old Filipina anthropologist, travels to Rikuzentakata City for her estranged father Emman’s funeral. Yoshihiro Togashi created plenty of interesting characters for Hunter x Hunter, but only one of them dies and still lives to see another day. The character in question is Kite, an extremely powerful hunter who was also Ging Freecss’ student.
Togashi gave Kite one of the craziest developments ever because how many characters die and then literally get reincarnated? Kite has been loved by fans due to his blunt yet caring nature, but it has been some time since the character was witnessed in the series.

Like a Dragon: Yakuza is an upcoming Prime Video series based on the popular video game franchise, and the cast is full of incredible talent. Although it isn't entirely clear exactly which characters might make a surprise cameo throughout the series, Prime Video's Like a Dragon: Yakuza trailer revealed plenty of big names will feature, and the story looks like it will be based on the franchise's first entry, as each game tends to change its roster of characters. As a result, audiences are bound to be treated to some exhilarating action when the crime show debuts.
Given how popular the source material is, Like a Dragon: Yakuza has plenty to get right from the games, but the talented cast looks like it will manage this. The trailer already suggested that the show will maintain the unorthodox, quirky tone that has become synonymous with the gaming franchise, and most of...

Norwegian director Benjamin Ree makes compelling (if occasionally airless) documentaries about men who discovered unusual ways of expressing themselves, and by doing so managed to defy the assumptions of a modern world that’s quicker than ever to judge people on a single detail. First came “Magnus,” the portrait of an eccentric chess prodigy who learned to channel his charisma through the genius of his play. That was followed by “The Painter and the Thief,” which tells the story of a lifelong criminal who came to see himself in a new light after stealing a piece of art from Oslo’s Galleri Nobel.
Now arrives “The Remarkable Life of Ibelin,” a clever and heartfelt tribute to someone Ree knew as a child — before Mats Steen’s all too brief existence was defined by the muscular dystrophy syndrome that seemingly deprived him of the chance to meet friends, fall in love,...

Nexon Korea Corporation’s free-to-play, multiplayer online role-playing game The First Descendant has been around for about a month now and has garnered significant attention from fans. However, this interest hasn’t been entirely positive, as players have voiced numerous complaints to the studio, hoping for resolutions to various issues.
As players take on the role of “Descendants,” humanity’s only hope against the enemy Vulgus, an invading alien race with mysterious powers, they are left wondering what their next hero will be. Surprisingly, the game’s next simp-baiting hero may have been right in front of us all along.
The First Descendant Fans Think Reina Hasn’t Awakened Yet and Could Be the Next Hero
If you’ve heard the phrase “Do you have something to ask of the great Reina?” somewhere, you probably know who Reina is. You may have encountered her in the Echo Swamp and Agna Desert missions.

It may not be as popular as the Big Three Shonen series, but Hunter x Hunter has developed a healthy and dedicated fan-base. At first glance, HxH seems like a light-hearted adventure series, but it is surprisingly dark and violent. The action is good, and Nen is arguably the most complex and intriguing power system in anime. HxH fans have met dozens of characters over the years, but certain characters stand out more than others.
Most of Hunter x Hunter's best characters are highly skilled Nen users, and many of them are slightly flawed heroes. Several of HxH's best characters are villains. Some of these villains are inherently evil, but a few are more complex. Each of these characters has shortcomings, but they also have redeeming qualities.

Kuuderes in anime are cool, calm, and aloof, expressing affection subtly, in contrast to more aggressive or energetic archetypes. Fans love the kuudere archetype for its relatability, gap moe qualities, and potential for comic relief in unexpected situations. Characters may creatively reinterpret the kuudere archetype, like Hirotaka's gaming prowess, Reina's silent but expressive love language, or icy powers.
Experienced anime fans are familiar with the family of -dere character archetypes, with each archetype describing how a character feels and expresses their affection for others. It comes from the word "dere," or lovey-dovey in Japanese, and the prefix will determine which archetype is being used. One example is the kuudere archetype, which is one of the subtler -dere archetypes, lacking the temper of a tsundere or the aggression of a yandere.

The following contains spoilers for various anime series.
The kuudere archetype describes an anime character who simply plays it cool with their daily life, including their romantic relationships. Unlike bubbly derederes and hotheaded tsunderes, a kuudere anime character has an aloof, almost unreadable exterior while having a warm and caring heart deep down. Kuuderes are often portrayed as calm, mature, and dignified, though there's still some variance in how kuuderes act and think. They're not quite as memorable or funny as tsunderes, but kuuderes do have their fans.
Anime fans love kuuderes, especially kuudere girls, because of the delightful contrast between their cool exterior and their affectionate heart, waiting until the right moment to finally show their amorous feelings to the right person. Contains Spoilers for Fire & Blood, and so potential spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2.
House of the Dragon season 2 draws from Fire & Blood, but that doesn't mean it spoils everything. Emma D'Arcy was seen in Spain back in May 2023, where filming for King's Landing scenes was taking place. There's no clear answer as to why Rhaenyra would be in King's Landing in season 2, though there are some plausible options such as a vision, or her taking the city.
Theres a clear blueprint for House of the Dragon season 2 thanks to the book, but theres one mystery it may not be able to answer. House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martins Fire & Blood, a historical account of House Targaryen written from an in-universe perspective. Unlike Game of Thrones ending, the prequel has the full story and completed source material to work from across its remaining seasons.

Nearly five decades before Kamala Harris ran for the U.S. presidency in 2020, Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman to run for president in 1972. She had also made history in 1968 becoming the first Black woman elected to the U.S. congress serving in the House of Representatives. The Democrat’s slogan in her first campaign was “Fighting Shirley-Unbought and Unbossed.” Serving in the House of Representatives until 1983, Chisholm introduced numerous pieces of legislation and was at the forefront of the fight for racial and gender equality and the plight of the poor. She was also the founder of the National Women’s Political Caucus.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass had two obvious reasons to attend Tuesday night’s Netflix premiere of John Ridley’s Shirley starring Regina King as trailblazing politico Shirley Chisolm.

She gave me the courage and the stamina and the fortitude,” Bass explained to The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet outside the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. “But I’m also here because my friend, representative Barbara Lee, is a character in the movie and I want to see young Barbara Lee.”
Lee, who is played in the film by actress Christina Jackson, was also on the scene. After the massive critical and commercial success of “A Silent Voice” (2016), it seemed like director Naoko Yamada could do no wrong and was poised for huge things. It may have been strange for some then that her next directorial project would be tied to the “Sound! Euphonium” anime series, which Yamada had previously worked on as series unit director under Tatsuya Ishihara. It could almost be seen as a regression, as Yamada's first two features, “K-on! The Movie” (2011) and “Tamako Love Story” (2014), were also based on pre-existing anime series. Yet whether a fan of “Sound! Euphonium” or not, “Liz and the Blue Bird” (2018) is a constant delight and could well be Yamada's masterpiece.

As a fan of fighting games, Tekken 8 was pretty high on my video games of 2024 list. I’ve been playing the games since the very beginning, back when there were only eight characters until you unlocked the rest. Tekken has always been a unique franchise to me, from the ongoing Mishima family “let me grab my popcorn” mess to the fact that some of the lore is unapologetically bizarre. You’d think the multiple bear characters were a joke, but not only are they part of the ongoing story, they aren’t even the weirdest fighter you can pick — and I love every minute of it.
