Oscars Joke Writer Won $50 Bet Over Conan O’Brien’s Kendrick Lamar-Drake Joke: ‘I Also Wrote the “Conclave” Joke About the Catholic Church’
Image
Conan O’Brien shocked the Oscars with a joke about the ongoing beef between rappers Kendrick Lamar and Drake, and it’s one that earned the joke writer some cash. Comedian and writer Skyler Higley was the brains behind the joke, and he revealed on X during the show: “Wrote the Kendrick Lamar joke and bet our executive producer $50 that it would kill. Just made $50.”

Higley, who writes for CBS’ “After Midnight” and previously worked with O’Brien on his TBS talk show “Conan,” was one of several writers who worked on the 2025 Oscars. The staff also included Amberia Allen, José Arroyo, Josh Comers, Dan Cronin, Jessie Gaskell, Berkley Johnson, Ian Karmel, Brian Kiley, Laurie Kilmartin, Carol Leifer, Jon Macks, Matt O’Brien, Agathe Panaretos and Mike Sweeney.

At the midway point of the Oscars ceremony, O’Brien walked out on stage and joked: “We’re halfway through the show, which means...

Halle Berry, Penélope Cruz, Bowen Yang to Present at 2025 Oscars
Image
Halle Berry, Penélope Cruz, Elle Fanning, Whoopi Goldberg, Scarlett Johansson, John Lithgow, Amy Poehler, June Squibb and Bowen Yang will be presenting at the 2025 Oscars, the Academy announced on Tuesday. They join last year’s acting winners Robert Downey Jr., Cillian Murphy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Emma Stone in handing out statuettes on March 2, when the 97th Academy Awards take place at the Dolby Theatre Ovation Hollywood, hosted by Conan O’Brien.

As previously announced, the show will see the return of the “Fab 5” format, where previous winners stand on stage and heap praise on each of this year’s nominees. In the past, the format has been used for the acting categories, but not this year, given the implosion of “Emilia Pérez” lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón’s campaign due to her history of bigoted tweets. Instead, five previous winners will assemble to highlight below-the-line talent.

Jo Koy Didn’t Have Enough Time, Writers or Celebrity for Golden Globes Monologue, Comedians Say
Jo Koy
Golden Globes host Jo Koy’s monologue was received poorly by both those in the room and many watching at home, but fellow comedians shared sympathy for their fellow comic — while also expressing discontent with his choice to blame his writers for the widely panned performance.

Comedian Laurie Kilmartin, who also hosts a podcast about the craft of comedy and wrote on “Conan,” was one of the prominent insider voices rising to Koy’s defense.

“This is a Terrible gig, this audience sucks,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter) regarding the job Koy himself noted he was just hired for 10 days prior. “They’re famous, nervous and humorless, and 10 days is genuinely not enough time to write about 500 jokes, which is how many you need to find 15 suitable jokes.”

“She is right, if not lowballing it a little,” comedian Eliza Skinner told TheWrap. “It’s a wildly specific crowd — huge...

‘The Crown’ Fans Call Season 6’s Ghost Diana a ‘Crime Against Humanity,’ but There Might Be More to It
Season 6 of “The Crown” was released on Thursday to mixed reactions (some of which were full of outright contempt). Fans of the show had a lot to dig through during the first four episodes (the following six will be released on Dec. 14), including the widely discussed “Ghost Diana.” As one fan put it on Twitter, “Force Ghost Diana is truly a crime against humanity.”

For the uninitiated, “Ghost Diana” appears first to Prince Charles and then to Queen Elizabeth II following her death. Rumors of such an appearance circulated ahead of the season’s release and, in an attempt to get ahead of the incredulous reactions, show creator Peter Morgan explained, “I never imagined it as Diana’s ‘ghost’ in the traditional sense. It was her continuing to live vividly in the...

Why Conan O’Brien Moved Beyond Late-Night TV
When Conan O’Brien signed his latest deal with TBS, he didn’t just agree to keep his late-night talk show on the air for another four years. In addition to hosting “Conan,” he promised to create digital content, podcasting, live tours, and other forms of entertainment.

It wasn’t just an attempt to make more money or keep O’Brien creatively fulfilled after more than two decades on the air, although it has proved to be both of those things too. It was also an acknowledgment that late-night television has changed. Instead of tuning into Jay or Dave or Johnny as part of an evening ritual, most Americans prefer to consume their comedy shows in easily digestible bites the next morning on YouTube.

“More and more with late-night TV, it’s going to be rare that someone starts watching and then watches for the entire show unless they fall...

Nominations For The 68th Annual Writers Guild Of America Awards
The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.

Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Sh*tty Mom Book Doesn’t Sugarcoat Parenting
Courtesy Harry N. Abrams

The revelation inspired the two, alongside coauthor Karen Moline, to team up with comedienne Laurie Kilmartin, a writer for Conan,...

'Conan' Writers You Should Be Following On Twitter
Conan O'Brien in Conan (2010)

Here are some of our favorite tweets from Team Coco as of late. Vote for your favorites and follow them for more!

'Last Comic Standing' - 'Week 6: Top Ten' Recap
Craig Robinson

(S07E06) Finally, we're down to the Top 10 finalists so hopefully these recaps become less like 'War and Peace' and more like 'The Five People You Meet in Heaven.' (Shorter. With less crying.)

The judges are not doing commentary anymore and now who moves on is decided by the audience at home voting. The results are announced the following Monday so the comics have a week to just sweat it out. Way harsh.

In the actual episode, there's a weird NBA All-Stars-esque intro with host Craig Robinson yelling all the comic's names and then Laurie Kilmartin is up first. She talks in her opening bit about how she's been kicked in the teeth a lot and considered giving up. Then she claims her teeth aren't real. It's cute.
