Jeff Nichols is reluctant to call Filmland a “film festival.” Sure, it’s a convenient term for the Arkansas-based cultural event, which the Little Rock-born filmmaker (whose credits include “Shotgun Stories” and “The Bikeriders”) co-founded with Kathryn Tucker in 2017. But it doesn’t quite capture what distinguishes Filmland, unspooling at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts from Aug. 13-17.
“This is more of a curated program that began with me inviting the people I knew, the friends of mine who helped me make movies, to show up and talk to people,” explains Nichols. “I wanted to create an organization that could connect the community to a conversation about the art of film,” where the community consists of locals deprived of independent and arthouse movies and “closer to my heart, crews of creative people that want to make things, specifically things generated in Arkansas,” Nichols says.

Paramount has been in the news a fair bit recently, for good reasons and, mostly, bad (for nerds who like boring stuff like free speech and political independence or whatever). But uh ... they did put a lot of Showtime content on Paramount+. That kinda makes up for it all, right?
The concerning and confounding decisions of the network's parent company aside, Showtime has long been the under-sung hero of prestige TV and the golden age of television at large. Would there be any shows with psychopathic, murderous protagonists without the success of "Dexter?" Would the political thriller subgenre be complete without "Homeland?" And is there a family drama so perfectly and relatably balanced between humor and heartbreak as "Shameless?" Unfortunately, you can't watch everything Showtime has produced on Paramount+ as of writing -- that said, of the shows available, these are the 15 most deserving of a rewatch.

Sometimes studios just can’t fight the power of fan casting. In-demand star Elle Fanning recently confirmed that she joined prequel film “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” in part due to fans online.
“I think fans made this happen in a way,” Fanning told MTV in the below video. “The studio [Lionsgate] said they were getting kind of hounded online, like, ‘Elle needs to play Effie.'”
Fanning was announced to be playing Effie Trinket on May 20; the character was originally brought to the screen by Elizabeth Banks, whom Fanning said that she “loves.”
Fanning added to Et that Effie is her “favorite character” because of “how great” Banks’ performance is. According to Fanning, Banks also congratulated her on being cast in the role. “She sent me flowers that were beautiful, saying, ‘The odds are ever in your favor,'” Fanning said, continuing that she really does want...

Chris Pratt kicked off the year by starring in The Electric State, the critically panned sci-fi film that cost over $300 million to make. 13 years ago, he starred in a forgotten rom-com that just got a disappointing streaming update. Pratt stars alongside Jason Segel (Shrinking) and Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow) in The Five-Year Engagement, a romantic comedy following Tom (Segel) and Violet (Blunt), a newly-engaged couple that keeps running into obstacles before they can make it down the aisle. The Five-Year Engagement is currently streaming on Netflix, but the streamer has announced that the last day to watch the film will be July 31. It earned mediocre scores of 64% from critics and 51% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed only $54 million at the box office against a $30 million budget.

We're living in a great era for original science fiction stories, with movies and shows like Dune, Severance, Foundation, Silo, Stranger Things, and more leading the way. But there are many more projects still to come, including at least six book adaptations.
Prepare for more Dune when Denis Villeneuve returns to adapt Dune Messiah. The world of The Handmaid's Tale will expand with a new series on Hulu, and Apple TV+ is adapting William Gibson's revolutionary Neuromancer novel. The following list highlights six books sci-fi fans should check out before they're adapted to the screen:

Dune Messiah is the darker, more politically intriguing sequel to Frank Herbert’s iconic sci-fi novel Dune.

One of 2024's best horror novels is getting the film treatment, and seems to be on the fast track to development after recently casting its young lead. Written by Josh Malerman (Bird Box), Incidents Around the House is set to be retitled to Other Mommy when it hits the big screen in 2026 thanks to Universal and Atomic Monster, the same company behind 2021's Mortal Kombat and its upcoming sequel.
Per Deadline, eight-year-old Arabella Olivia Clark (Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere) has snagged the lead in Other Mommy, taking on the role of Bela, the novel's protagonist. Directed by Rob Savage from a screenplay by Nathan Elston, she joins previously announced cast members Jessica Chastain, Jay Duplass and Dichen Lachman.

A few months ago, it was announced that director Rob Savage would be moving on from a Stephen King adaptation to a Josh Malerman adaptation, as The Boogeyman director was set to helm a film adaptation of Bird Box author Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House, with Jessica Chastain (It Chapter Two) signed on to play a lead role. Since then, Jay Duplass (Transparent) and Dichen Lachman (Severance) have joined the cast, and it’s become increasingly obvious that the filmmakers didn’t intend to use the title Incidents Around the House. Now, it’s official: Deadline reports that the film is called Other Mommy. It has also been revealed that eight-year-old Arabella Olivia Clark, who will be seen in the upcoming film Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, has landed a lead role.
Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are producing Other Mommy in association with Spin a Black Yarn for Universal Pictures.

Rob Savage’s next horror film will hit cinemas in May 2026. But what’s Other Mommy about? We’re glad you asked…
Featured image: The Boogeyman (2023)
If you were scared senseless by Rob Savage’s Covid-era screamfest Host, you’ve likely been keeping tabs on the British director. Blumhouse also noticed his talents after Host and offered him a three-picture deal, keeping the filmmaker well and truly busy after his transition from indie films to Hollywood.
The first of those films was 2021’s somewhat controversial Dashcam. But 2026 will see the release of the second film Savage has made with Blumhouse. Titled Other Mommy, it sounds like an interesting companion movie to Savage’s 2023 horror, The Boogeyman.
This writer is keen on seeing what else Savage has in store for us, and we’re betting you are, too. With that in mind, here’s what we know so far about Other Mommy.
